I like the idea of breaking blocks into smaller blocks, then having gravity do the rest. Kind of like Asteroids meets the Coin/Pachinko game from Nintendo Land. Will keep an eye on this one.
This is good news. Takes the sting out of not getting the new Batman. Would gladly take high-caliber $15 downloads over AAA $60 games. The shorter, often more experimental titles are more my speed nowadays.
I started Arkham Asylum on my 360 and was into it, but quickly lost interest. Lots of punchy-punching and then long cutscenes. The Detective stuff was neat. But it just didn't come together for me.
The Batman game we really need on Wii U? Sunsoft's NES game on VC.
Are people really concerned about the story in a Yoshi game? That's kind of like saying, "Man, this cake is delicious, but I wish I knew its motivation for being fluffy and light."
I'm reasonably excited for this. And doesn't his mention of Yoshi's Story-style graphics on the console reconfirm Yarn Yoshi? I know some were concerned that it had been canceled since we hadn't heard much in over a year. That's the Yoshi game I'm more psyched for. Good-Feel > Arzest. Are we on the cusp of The Year of Yoshi...?
I personally lost interest in games circa 2002, then five years later was reinvigorated by the Wii. So I say keep pushing. I'm crazy-intrigued by this QOL platform. But I'm also anxious to see their next phase of Wii U games and whatever comes after 3DS. There's room for both.
THIS is the attitude that more devs need to have. Make something 'cause it excites you. If you do that, your work will reflect your enthusiasm, and the money will come. More of this please!
Huh, everyone's saying Mario Pinball Land is bad? That's surprising. Haven't played it, but was excited by this announcement. Why isn't it very good, exactly?
As for GBA on Wii U VC in general, I actually think it's a great move. The GamePad is basically a giant original GBA. Think of it as a GBA Macro. And since lots of GBA games were console ports/SNES-ish games, they'll play fine at home. I tend to play my handhelds more at home anyway, so the lack of portability doesn't bother me. Just hope we get a steady stream of games.... though it's unlikely
Looks hot. The last few days have been a storm of excellent (and sometimes exclusive!) indies coming to Wii U. That Unity agreement is finally coming to fruition... I'll gladly take awesome indie games over bloated, derivative major 3rd party games anyway.
Freakyforms and U. A sequel using the GamePad to construct your Formees and a huge world to explore amongst other user-created characters. Go on quests, take part in races. I'd buy that. (Me and ten other people. Oh well.)
@Nintenjoe64 I'm with you. Just played a few matches, and I'm edging ever-closer to Level 10*. Love the quick-fire 7 point matches, too.... makes it really tense and exciting. Voice chat would ruin it, I think. The hand-written posts you can flash up using the D-Pad are perfect accents on points. Simple, easy, fun. Can't wait for Baseball/Boxing.
So is the announced Mii mode their take on the old RPG modes of the GBC/GBA games? But kind of stripped down? The footage looked somewhat similar. Personally I prefer playing with my own avatar or a generic character than Mario et al., in these sports games. Would love Open Tennis to go on sale w/ release of this, too.
Whoa, whoa... is Brian Blessed the voice of Zeus in Pinball Pulse: The Ancients Beckon (DSiWare)? Never heard of him but I know I've heard that voice before.
I see no problem with this. Enjoy it or ignore it.
At least they're trying to speak to demographics other than teenage boys. Whether the tone or content is appropriate is up to the viewer's opinion. But the effort seems worthwhile.
Hmm. Sounds like that StreetPass Flower Town game mixed with Big Bang Mini on DS. Would love to see more WiiWare games HD'ified. And maybe a sequel to Rock 'n Roll Climber?? Tomena Sanner U? Alien Crush Returns... Again? (Okay, maybe not that last one.)
I am here to defend Vega's Stakes's honor. That's a HAL Laboratory game, folks, presided over by Mr. Iwata. The man gets what he wants. And it's the most fun casino game I've ever played.
@Captain_Bagel I know, right? That's why this concept is so brilliant... it's not based on some arbitrary energy meter or gems to "buy" more time or better stats into a game. Here you're trying to swindle a poor guy whose family is hungry. Your gain is this character's loss. Even though he's, you know, an animated dog. I love how they're using emotion and guilt as a gameplay mechanic. Can't wait to try it.
@statnut I was going to say the exact same thing. I would love a Pocket Baseball Club or Pocket (American) Football Club in this exact style. Hopefully NOA sees the potential and makes a push for this. The fact that they're bringing over Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is a good sign they're willing to localize odd, non-sim sports games to the west. At the very least, I'd be interested in this games coming out in North America, too, even though I'd never play a FIFA-style game.
Huh. Though I'm skeptical this project will ever come out (and if it does, my expectations are low), this is exactly the kind of stuff I hoped to see from indie devs on Wii U. Fun, quirky experiments that get back to the smaller games many of us grew up on and not another giant open world to explore (read: get lost in). If this turns into a Tecmo Bowl / Mutant League Football kind of thing, I'm on board.
Hopefully at the very least it shows other devs with a more proven track record that there's interest in A) sports games on Nintendo platforms, and B) exclusive titles that cater to a specific platform's audience, and not just another PC port.
Best news of this article: The headline image confirming that Music Park is a retro track holdover from MK7. Which HOPEFULLY means an update/sequel of Wii Music could be coming. With Miiverse, innovative GamePad controls, and HD visuals, that would instantly be my most-wanted game.
Agreed that Wii Fit U is definitely the best all-around package of the Fit games yet. There's quite a lot more enhancements/additions this time around than between the original and Fit +. Even the old games hold up: That Soccer Ball heading game will never grow stale, and it's hard! You really do have a fine amount of control using just your balance. Crazy.
Too bad not nearly as many people will ever give it a shot, given the smaller install base and Wii owners not feeling compelled to "upgrade" to the Wii U.
I bought this for DS and got stuck during a mission midway through the story. So it's nice that the episodic release nature means I wouldn't have to buy the early stages I've already played. (Although... maybe you can't start with Ep.2?) Will be interested to see how this does.
Also: I simply can't believe, after three whole years on the market, there has yet to be a first-person shooter on the 3DS.
Man, I hope this does well enough to convince small developers to create unique, exclusive games for Wii U. Ports of indie PC games are fine, but there's so much potential with the GamePad that's being unrealized. My Hamilon awaits you, Mr. Broadbent.
It's funny, considering this news story with all the doom-and-gloom lately.... I'm pretty sure a company that can throw down over a BILLION dollars in cash in the course of a day is not likely to sink any time soon. Everybody focuses on the Now-Now-Now... they're worried about twenty years down the road. That's how you sustain and grow a business.
I share @minotaurgamer's optimism and curiosity. And I agree that anything angering those people hunkered down into their exclusive little bunkers of gamedom is a positive sign for making something with wide, broad appeal. I'd much rather make a million people unexpectedly happy (and healthier!) than give a thousand people what they think they want.
@boynerdrambling Finally, finally! A bit of sense. Thank you.
I came into this meeting with low expectations. What they said and hinted at blew away what I'd expected to hear. Who knows what this QOL platform is, but I'm really, really intrigued and excited by its potential.
And it cracks me up how all the fans/analysts were saying "Go mobile! Lose the GamePad!" And Iwata comes out and says, We're focusing on the GamePad. And we're leapfrogging mobile altogether.
So last week more people in the United Kingdom bought Dead Island: Riptide or Aliens: Colonial Marines than Super Mario 3D World or LoZ: Link Between Worlds. Get it together, U.K.!
@Ryo_Hazuki-san I think I saw your post on Miiverse yesterday! Nice Link bow-&-arrow drawing.
Sorry, off-topic.... there is no way Watch_Dogs for Wii U is coming out. Seems crazy to just write it off after all that development time. But I don't understand the costs in printing and distributing discs, getting ESRB ratings for each platform, etc. Still, an absolute shame, if only for public perception. This is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy more and more every day.
Am I the only one who HATES the automatic-play feature of Netflix on other platforms? It drives me crazy when one episode finishes and immediately there's a countdown of 10 seconds before the next one starts to play. I like to watch one episode and go do something else. I also like to watch the ending credits. I like to hear the full bit of music. But I guess I'm in the minority. Man, I don't get how all these people just binge watch shows for hours and hours and hours...
You can all still read a book about Earthbound! The first in the Boss Fight Books series just came out. And the Forward is written by... Marcus Lindblom! bossfightbooks.com
@Einherjar That SMB3 book by Chipman came out last year. Nintendo has no legal standing to block publication, since none of the cover graphics are exactly the ones in the game, and since the book is "criticism." Or so I've been told.
@Yorumi @element187 I agree that it's discomforting to read so many people calling for Nintendo to pull a 180 and fall in line with the competition. If anything, I feel like they should go even further away from them, play to their strengths. That's the type of "Whoa!" experience that will get people's attention. Not another box that can play all the games you could already play on a PC or PS4. Their response will be fascinating to watch, one way or the other.
Man... I will kind of be shocked if this even releases on Wii U at this point. I just have no faith in a big 3rd party game coming out anymore. Brace for bad news, people.
I commented on an earlier article about this game, being a bit dismissive of the project and worried about Web Framework if this was the result, and the dev himself came on and responded, which I appreciate. To be honest, this new video gives off a much more appealing vibe than the earlier preview. At 2 bucks it could be a nice little distraction. Will be curious to hear what he has to say.
Was I the only one not, well, over the moon for Moon? It was technically impressive, but the limitations of the system's control scheme made simple movement frustrating. I put it down after encountering a spot I couldn't pass. The idea of a 2D continuation (per @brandonbwii) of the story actually makes me much more excited.
@ChimeraKnight Personally, I loved this game, but it was also my first Silent Hill. It seems like fans of the originals disliked Shattered Memories since it didn't conform to expectations, and players new to the series were more apt to enjoy it for what it was? Either way, I'd love a follow-up on Wii U. Pretty doubtful that'll ever happen, though...
Anticipating this more and more with every impression I read. Come on, NOA, bring this out soon-ish. And an interesting trend, this pixel-stamp collectible thing. Between 3D World, NES Remix, and this, Nintendo's mining their art portfolio pretty hardcore. A nice way to bridge old and new.
It's not earth-shattering or anything, but I've used TVii off and on since launch. Weirdly, I think it works best for people with the least paid TV programming, since the feature I like the best is its simple Guide/Grid function that shows what's coming on all your channels. Most Cable services probably already have that, but since I use a digital antennae for free OTA broadcast (which the TVii app understands and syncs up with quite nicely) this gives me something I wouldn't otherwise have.
And watching sports with it is a nice simple way of tracking plays and stats. Not incredible, but a nice supplemental feature. They definitely hyped it way too much, though. Made it out to be something it's not. Come on, Reggie... under-promise and over-deliver!
Though it'd be nice to see this as a test for huge steam-like sales, I really think Nintendo is scared to do something like that regularly, as it teaches consumers to just wait for the inevitable reduction and never buy anything full price. The market is changing so drastically, though, that maybe it's the only way to get people's dollars anymore... Worries me, to be honest, when people value games so poorly that $20 is seen as expensive.
I would buy almost all of those games. (Probably pass on Majora 3D, 'cause I just played it on Wii VC.) Paper Mario Origami makes a lot of sense, and origami is so hot right now! I loved Sticker Star and don't see why that game gets so much hate. Also: Metroid Dread. Please please become real, real soon.
The list just goes to show how much potential Nintendo IPs have in the future (and why new IP is less important than many think, since they have so much relatively untapped, familiar and popular characters already.)
