Actually a full-scale Wii U version of this game might be stunning. The underwater environments were lovely on 3DS, but HD would make 'em shine and the GamePad is a freaking periscope already! Please make it a home console game. Seems the F2P framework is already there (with T!T!T!) more so than on 3DS, so hopefully this isn't too crazy of a proposition.
@Mortenb Bergen, Norway? I stayed overnight there once while traveling through Scandinanvia. Lovely town! Fond memories of eating waffles with cheese.
And in other news, yes, this looks nice. Not sure what the companion cube is doing in the second video, but I hope this continues a trend of strong indie presence on Wii U into this holiday.
I have no problem with the price on these. StreetPass came with the system, so it's not entirely free, but between Find Mii and Puzzle Swap I've spent close to 40 hours with my little Mii neighbors. Luckily I live in a city where I pass people most days. I've been waiting for more games that use StreetPass, and I'll gladly pay the 15 or so for the lot of 'em, (if/when they come to North America.... really hope they don't wait until the Relay Service is set up later in the summer).
What will be more interesting, I think, will be what next month's chart looks like, and the month after that. How long will TLoU stick around, and how long will AC:NL thrive? (Glad to see a new IP doing so well, though.... hopefully it means more ambitious new ideas get greenlit in the future)
If this was a normal E3, and we didn't know the slate of games to be shown.... and then they revealed 3D World, Kart 8, DKC, Windwaker HD, and Smash Bros., people would have been flipping out and praising Nintendo. Strangely, that same mix of games is seen as disappointing since the only surprise was a sequel? This is why E3 means very little. So much bluster and then, months later, when the games are actually out, nobody remembers who "won" and the games are either fun or they're not. The more I see of this year's line-up, the better it looks.
Mr. Agnello's views are certainly stirring the pot here... and though I think DKCTF looks pretty rad, the infusion of new voices is appreciated. Those interested should check out his other stuff http://t.co/iZiYlMKCfE
I'm warming up to this game.... each time I see it or hear about it, I start to see the awesome potential. And I won't complain about a bigger & better 3D Land - I do not understand the lack of enthusiasm for that game from some people. Plays like a 2D Mario? Say wha?? What I'm worried about is it seemed built for the 3DS, so I'm hoping the lack of depth doesn't diminish the experience.
And hey, the return of 4 playable characters!.. might have to re-write a chapter or two....
Reading these comments is giving me whiplash... Disappointment! Elation! Frustrated! Amazed!
At first I, too, was a bit put-off, but DKCR was a phenomenal game and once the trailer introduced the more dynamic 3D camera, things started looking up. Not the game-changer we all wanted Retro to have, but today's Retro is not the same team that made Prime, people. Important to remember that. Should be a fun, challenging, old-school adventure.
@Caryslan I know what you mean. Since Sega stopped making hardware, their stamp on history has diminished a bit... but they still have a huge devoted audience. A Sonic game was in the running for this first series of books, actually, but didn't quite make the cut. Season Two?
@Philip_J_Reed And thanks! Can't wait to get my hands on them, either.
@Yoshi3DS Each of the books will have a different focus. Some will be more about the history and influence the game has had, some will be more autobiographical. I'm planning the SMB2 one to be something of a mix.
I'd love to talk with people involved in the decision to bring over Doki Doki Panic as SMB2 if I can... but also I'm interested in looking closely at the game itself, what it feels like to play, how it compares to the broader Mario franchise and what it can tell us about Nintendo and their role in the industry.
I'd heard that somewhere. Crazy to think how far they've come.
For some reason I always get Epic and id's backstories confused... Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen... the 90s were a time of great alliteration, no doubt.
@baba_944 ZZT was an old (1991) computer game using ANSI graphics, made by the folks who would become Epic Games, interestingly enough. I'm not that familiar with it personally. But Anna Anthropy sure is.
And so is @Philip_J_Reed, apparently. Quick off-the-cuff review + score, Mr. Reed?
Hey Andy and the rest of the NLife crew! This is Jon, future author of the SMB2 book for Boss Fight. Thanks so much for featuring our Kickstarter campaign.
I'm an irregular commenter here, but I really enjoy this community and think many of you passionate, thoughtful Nintendo fans will dig these books.
One thing not mentioned above is that all backers get the chance to vote for the subject of Book #6 in the series. Even if you donate just $1! Check out the campaign page for more details.
If anyone has any questions, ask away. Cheers! And happy E3 week!
Hmm. Does the basic level aesthetic look too similar to Mutant Mudds for anyone else? Seems like they swapped different characters into an M.M. level editor. Even the gems look similar to those in Mudds. I'm sure it plays differently, but it's all a bit too familiar for me to get psyched right now.
I love that this fever-dream of a game is actually 1) made in the first place, and 2) coming to the west. Am intrigued, but worried my lack of experience with many of the franchises might dull the enjoyment? Although that Ghosts 'n Goblins stage might quell any of that skepticism right quick...
Not sure if someone else has noticed this, but looks like Bob Summerwill or whatever his name is (EA guy who slammed WiiU) hasn't tweeted since May 17th. Hmmm...... looks like someone got the umbrella hook around the neck.
If Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures comes to VC to commemorate this, I'm happy. If not... I have zero interest in this. But hey, kids who watch the TV show might like it, so whatever.
The thing about NSMBU... that game will sell for the life of the system. The next 3D Mario will (hopefully) ignite a lot of core excitement and get multiplatform owners on board, but by the time this generation is over the 2D game will have FAR outsold the 3D one. Which will help fund riskier ventures.
Can't wait to see what's up their sleeves in a few weeks...
This smacks of a bubble waiting to burst. I remember when Draw Something blew up, was worth millions, Zynga bought them, and a few months later.... ? I'll be curious to see what the respective valuations of each company are in 12 months.
I'd popped in every once in awhile before the update, but the new features are a huge plus. Yesterday I spent 45 minutes taking my wife on a tour of Las Vegas, then we checked out NYC and Boston... going inside the "orange dot" buildings is super-addictive. And seeing what others have posted and found is a cool way to discovery new places. I'm shocked more people aren't so impressed by Wii Street U. Seems like the kind of thing that would get a mainstream audience's attention if demonstrated correctly on a morning talk show or Ellen or something.... Reggie get on this!
Please bring these 3D retro-conversions over... am more interested in Space Harrier than Sonic, but the idea of this series (like what 3D Classics were supposed to be) is awesome and I hope-hope-hope Nintendo has a second volume of classics coming down the pipe.
This would be very interesting if the crowdfunding deal is just to gauge interest... and then Nintendo (or some other publisher) swoops in and helps fund the rest of it. Kind of like what happened with Cloudberry Kingdom (though to a much smaller degree) with Ubisoft publishing that.
I love me some Eternal Darkness. Not sure about this just yet. Hard for lightning to strike twice, you know.
Would love if Wii U put out some classic Gamecube games but with extra features, like New Play Control games on Wii or even 3D Classics on 3DS. Call 'em "Made for U" or something. Put in cool new Gamepad functionality, up-res graphics, miiverse integration. I'd re-buy a souped up version of Eternal Darkness for $29.99.
MaBoShi's Arcade is excellent! Especially if you have a friend/roommate/significant other to play with. Can't wait to see what kind of stylized/elegant puzzle games they come up with for Wii U.
If they curate the shop and promote the few iOS/Android ports that are high-quality, this could be a great option.... the one thing Wii U has that other consoles don't is the GamePad. And with the 2nd screen in your hands, it makes sense to offer a variety of short, cheap titles people want to play in-between commercials or while watching TV. Can't do that with XBLA or PSN games.
So if Nintendo can have the longer, substantial "traditional" games on their system PLUS the shorter, throwaway titles (for an adequate price) then they cover two markets at the same time. This is not desperation; this is a smart and savvy business decision. Hope it pans out.
(But yeah, w/r/t "MASSIVE" announcement tease.... maybe temper the excitement next time? You want to under-sell and over-produce, not the other way around.)
Everybody wanting Rare to come back to Nintendo? Well here you go. Very very excited to see this come to Wii U. Too bad the wait's so long, but I'll gladly wait for this version (of course I don't have an iPad, but still...).
Metroid Prime is one of the greatest games I've ever played. BUT I really hope Retro isn't working on another Prime game. Take another classic franchise and flip the conventions around, like Sakurai did with Kid Icarus. I just want to be surprised and intrigued: A Prime 4 would be like, "Oh, okay, I know what this will be."
Yeah, I'm surprised at the lack of enthusiasm here. I'm honestly more excited for this than Pikmin 3. Just total wacky madness. This opens the door for other mid-tier price points for full retail games, too, which needs to happen with the rise of digital.
Yeah, as often as Nintendo delays a big release, I feel like they're pretty good about holding their cards close to their chest. Was it 2010 when they revealed Donkey Kong Country Returns and Epic Yarn at E3 and then we're playing them a few months later? Pikmin 3 has been a rare instance of promising a game's release before it was ready. (And Smash Bros.) Regardless, I'd much prefer this stance than annualizing a half-baked product just to squeeze some dough from anxious customers. Keep doing your own thing, Iwata and Co.
This is a hugely important game to launch day-and-date with the other versions, if only to save a little face. Then if big-time COD players get their hands on it and try the local 2-player with GamePad vs. TV they might be stoked enough to give the console a shot. Personally I'm not all that interested. But Wii U owners should hope this rumor comes true. Looks likely so far.
The Wii U game is top-notch. Genuinely funny. A true pleasure. I do hope 3DS owners pick up the prequel, then are suitably charmed to consider getting the full-on console version. Exclusives of such quality need to do well if we hope to have more down the line...
Agreed with Jayvir... though I imagine that won't happen until there are more systems in homes. But yeah, this actually looks pretty cool. Meat Boy with combat! I would not say no.
Played this at PAX East and it looked and played really like nothing else I saw at the show. Oddly enough it gave me kind of a Gunstar Heroes vibe (?). At least the boss demo did. I'm psyched. That it's digestible and compact, all the better.
To those who say this is a sign of weakness or lack of confidence... Who usually yells the loudest: the insecure and afraid, or the self-assured? If you want people to listen, whisper. Just another example of Nintendo zagging when everyone else is ready to zig.
Some people dismiss Shattered Memories as not really "Silent Hill," but for me it was one of my favorite experiences on the Wii. Really affective, loved the use of the speaker and the non-combat. I'm keeping an eye on you, Climax.
