Interesting how the golf genre has took a life of its own this last generation with titles like Golf Story and What the Golf, and now games such as this and Playtonic's "A Little Golf Journey" on the way... it's the biggest resurgence of any genre in some time.
@Bermanator it depends how far down this rabbit hole you want to go… once they’re bankrupt and have all lost their jobs? Maybe not. But maybe emulation is part of the reason it happened in the first place, lack of sales etc. If we’re talking companies and licences still around, in a world of remasters and collections on multiple platforms you can never predict your logic.
@Otoemetry yes the payment system is obviously encrypted, as is any company. But if you were to contact customer service for example, they’d still be able to see what you’ve purchased and how much you paid. You won’t see card details, addresses and so on… but you’ll see a purchase list and how much someone paid. So they’ll see the DLC, and great big 0 next to it.
@LightyKD at least Nintendo’s in house emulation has vastly improved and allows for patching in new textures on the fly etc. I’d expect this to be why they’ve held off on an N64 Switch Online library until some point this year, so the treatment SM64 got can be given to other titles.
@CactusMan I’ll be honest and say since the news of 3DS carts potentially having premature issues, I’ve modded my 3DS and backed up my physical games to a microSD card on it. Now my games can not have to further deteriorate by being overused etc.
@Bermanator that’s focussing purely on the publisher and hardware manufacturer. Companies like Telltale, Lionhead, Acclaim, Guerrilla, Silicon Knights, Bizarre… it’s these companies who develop games and then lose out. Not Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft.
I do believe hardware will always be better than software emulation. And of course supporting the original developers and console manufacturers is paramount.
However, there are some scenarios where emulation does become important. Whether it's now impossible to obtain titles, unreleased content, or fan creations such as the Banjo Kazooie / Ocarina of Time mods that exist.
While other people are of course willing to play any old game on emulation and imply it doesn't have any impact on the industry (tell that to the numerous developers that have gone bankrupt over the last 5-10 years), I do personally try to only stick to games I physically own and keep safely stored in my attic from older consoles. Which at least in some cases such as Wii and GameCube games via Dolphin allow me to appreciate them at better resolutions now.
@jump I can't imagine regions will have different dates, just that the article is more confident to discuss what it's more aware of through distributions and manufacturing points.
I wonder how many people who complained about the Amiibo leapt at this and didn't pay? I would imagine Nintendo will be able to reverse this anyway, and see which accounts paid for it and which didn't. Depends how Nintendo are feeling about it I guess after all the over the top hot air Skyward Sword's Amiibo has had on social media the last week or so. They might let this one slide just to keep the louder 5% quiet...
@ATaco I'm only presuming of course, but I feel the cost is proof that it will be a larger Amiibo similar to Detective Pikachu or the Guardian from BotW.
I've wanted 1080 and Wave Race back for years now. Never knew why the Jet Ski part of Wii Sports Resort and it's use of Wiimote throttle wasn't made into a full game Wave Race style to be fair. The joycons could do the same thing now.
@earthinheritor It's not a new feature though, it's a feature already in the game, in a different form. There are warp statues all over the game, it's a function that is already there to use. It's just attached to an Amiibo to be lazy.
@electrolite77 If that feature wasn't there, noone would have missed it. The game isn't altered without its presence. It's not a whole new dungeon, or a key weapon that you need to complete the game... it's something that's already there, in a different form. It's all very silly.
@electrolite77 I don't think in this case it's about defending Nintendo, I think it's the over dramatisation of what the Amiibo's functionality is. And people making out like some horrific essential feature is locked behind a paywall. When it isn't.
In Breath of the Wild, the only way you can access Epona as Link's horse, is by using the Epona Amiibo. To me, that's more of a deal than something like Fast Travel that is already in Skyward Sword anyway... just not in such a lazy fashion.
It's not any different to Cat Mario amiibo offering the invincibility suit. It's just a way to make the game easier. It's not changing the game, or removing any features... it's just a lazy fast travel option.
Anyone would think they'd locked button controls in the Amiibo or something.
@Dezadocys90 Because people enjoy and appreciate the figures themselves, and have collections. They don't want random bits of blank plastic with sharpie'd names on them as replacements. So while Nintendo keep making nice figures, fans will buy them.
@PBandSmelly I don't see how anyone can call this a quality of life improvement. It's like the Amiibo is how you gain access to button controls or something.
The feature of fast travel is in the game anyway, with many many points located on the map to do so. All the Amiibo does is break dungeons by allowing you to pop in and out for ammo at the drop of a hat (or Amiibo), and then zip back to the exact point you left. That's a disservice to the level design if anything, not a "quality of life" improvement.
@electrolite77 It's not really DLC. It's a little bonus feature. It's a lazy version of something that's already in the game. People really have made this more than it needs to be.
Amiibo's, going by their original name in Smash Bros, are Assistance Trophies. They "assist" you. That's their primary function. And the way this Amiibo "assists" you, is by offering you a feature that's dotted all over the map anyway, but just in a custom, lazy, dungeon breaking manner.
@John_Deacon But that's not what is happening? It's the smallest of bonus features, being insanely blown out of proportion by social media. It's not even that great a feature, and makes dungeons far far too easy now. It spoils the challenge more than anything.
It's not hiding HD graphics, it's not forcing you to buy it if you want button controls... it's a portable version of what statues do in the game anyway. That's all it is!
@Northwind LEGO Dimensions characters were the same cost in some cases, as were Skylanders and Disney Infinity. That's toys to life, and the cost the consumer many years ago helped establish.
@Iggy-Koopa but that's where social media overhypes things like this and reads far far too much into it. Nintendo wouldn't go that far. This feature people are going on and on about is nothing special, they've just needed another reason to knock a Skyward Sword price and purpose. When it was Cat Mario for 3D World noone commented. When it was Epona locked in an Amiibo in Breath of the Wild (That's worse! Link's horse, not in the game, without an Amiibo!) Noone commented.
Lazy fast track that spoils dungeons in Skyward Sword? Outrage!!!!
@electrolite77 whether it's an improvement is the real argument here. Because if anything it lessens the puzzle/logic element of dungeons completely. You can leap in and out at the drop of an Amiibo and stock up willy nilly, and then zip back where you left off again. It's pointless. And the whole argument is over the top anyway.
In regards to "paywalls" and "quality of life" content, I think it's all hyperbole and over the top reactions.
The feature, is just a lazy fast track. It does something that a 2/3 minute walk can do without the Amiibo anyway. Anyone would think they'd locked button controls in there or something! All they've included, is a lazy, dungeon breaking mechanic. Where you can pop out of a dungeon mid fight, buy some ammo, and pop back with no difficulty whatsoever. I think as a feature it's actually a disservice to the game!
And before anyone drags up the argument of "well if it's so small why not just include it?!"... why bother with any Amiibo features then?! Why have Cat Mario offer an invincibility suit? Or have Wolf Link summon him to help along your side in Breath of the Wild? Why bother at all eh?!
Nintendo in that respect simply can't win. They either put something insignificant in like extra hearts or rupees and people say it's pointless, or they put a decent incentive to own it in there and it's considered a paywall!
Amiibo's have been around since 2014. Going by their original name in Smash Bros, they are "Assist Trophies". They "assist" you. That's their primary function. And the way this Amiibo "assists" you, is by offering you a feature that's dotted all over the map anyway, but just in a custom, lazy, dungeon breaking manner.. And only now, because of the stupid cost press Skyward Sword HD has already had, has this particular Amiibo being targeted. It's so, so over the top...
As for the price? Well, if it's the same size as other Zelda Amiibo's, then yeah it's over priced. I'll agree. But if it's Detective Pikachu sized, then again, the cost is warranted. With that one we shall have to see.
Animal Crossing will 100% still get major updates yet. There are many characters yet to appear, some of which have clear positions to arrive at (the roped off doorway in the museum is clearly for Brewster to arrive in for example). It's just a slow burner that they're planning, Pokemon Go style.
It's funny that the month I find all my childhood Pokemon cards in good condition (a few 1st edition cards in there that as a 10 year old I had no idea was a thing haha), it's now all kicking off again with buyers, scalpers, and the TCG being a big deal again.
Yeah found all my First Move promo cards (including the obligatory Ancient Mew's in there), 1st edition base set cards (Holo Machamp, Holo Dark Alazakam), and even an original set of Japanese "Pocket Monsters" booster set cards... was cool to go through them again.
@Yorumi it isn't incomplete though. It is a complete, working title. People just want more from it. So what they've done is use the same model as Pokemon Go, where phased updates and content is brought along as a drip feed way to keep the product active. If they'd just dropped the living Pokedex and every type of battle on day one, Pokemon Go wouldn't still be a thing for example.
Bring the Smash Bros. Ultimate model to Mario Kart. Let's have Mario Kart Ultimate. Every course/character ever, redesigned MK8 style. And then move forward with season pass style DLC that introduces a new character, track and music selection every so often.
The sad thing is, as much as these accomplishments take time and effort, people are flogging dodgy Pokemon Home packs with all Shinys included for less than £3 an account. Makes the whole thing seem utterly pointless now.
I do think people are maybe expecting things in the wrong way this time around, just because previous releases did it "that" way. This game changed the mechanics around terraforming, what it meant to manage an island/town, your role in the proceedings, etc. And this time updates are at least making annual events different prizes each year.
The team also did state they had a long term plan with updates in this version, over several years. So expecting Brewster and every other shop to be around by the end of year one was maybe expecting too much when this is a marathon not a sprint.
Could there be more items? Perhaps. Could Nook Miles be more useful? Definitely. But are the major updates too slow and lacking? Not in my opinion, not when you see updates like the Super Mario collection and see the amount of detail that went into them, for example.
Also... Brewster will 100% be coming at some point. The red rope cordoning off an entrance in the museum is clearly destined to be his coffee shop at some point. Patience my bird loving friends haha...
I think the main issue was the next logical step was the N64, which was a legal minefield for most of the games you'd choose to release on it. If it's not games by Rare such as Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark or Diddy Kong Racing, then it's games with grey area licensing such as GoldenEye. Therefore Nintendo would have to purely rely on other titles such as Mario 64, Smash Bros and Wave Race. Which, while good games, wouldn't be considered a full package.
Now that it's inevitable to have both Link and Zelda as playable characters, I can see the gameplay branching off into two directions. Zelda, who now has the slate again, will take charge of Shrines and BotW style challenges. Link, who is now back to basics and will have to rely on traditional bombs etc, will go explore newly discovered dungeons and more old-school Zelda gameplay elements. Thus combining both eras of Zelda, and making it the perfect sequel.
(Reluctantly) ordered from Play Asia, despite the cost... its rare anything like this for a non Mario/Zelda game is released, especially for a 20th Anniversary, so it'll be nice to have. And it has literally every track you can think of across seven discs too.
For me the biggest confusion in all of this, and something I thought the latest Nintendo Direct was going to address, was the lack of Super Mario Galaxy 2. You have literally every other mainstream console Super Mario title on Switch now. Why leave out what many consider to be the stronger Galaxy title?
Yeah my big concern here is them attempting to launch alongside Breath of the Wild 2. I believe we'll get BotW2 news in November ready for a March 2021 launch (similar to how the first BotW was handled, and worked very well)... so unless this game comes out month's prior, or month's after (which the latter doesn't seem to be the case) it's going to be massively overshadowed by Zelda.
@iaLgan you mean Zelda as in 2017 Game of the Year? Yes, no Switch is complete without it. The whole premise of the story is that you can't remember what happened. It's a lack of story that you slowly uncover exploring the world around you. People three years on still haven't found everything or discovered all the ways you interact. People only just worked out you can feed squirrels and deer, and that when dressed as a Bokoblin you can hang out with them and share food. It's an experience unlike anything else.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is the most obvious, however the free weekend with Overcooked 2 will be tried out with the other half as we enjoyed the first outing and have yet to delve into the sequel.
Apart from that I'm also introducing her to LEGO Dimensions, a game that sadly ended prematurely and deserved to get it's cancelled third year made.
I really don't get the appeal. And I also don't understand why a game released in 2018 was eligible for 2020 game awards. It wasn't even for the ongoing categories...

(Reluctantly) ordered from Play Asia, despite the cost... its rare anything like this for a non Mario/Zelda game is released, especially for a 20th Anniversary, so it'll be nice to have. And it has literally every track you can think of across seven discs too.
Re: Soapbox: There Might Be A Bright Side To Mario's March 31st Doomsday, After All
For me the biggest confusion in all of this, and something I thought the latest Nintendo Direct was going to address, was the lack of Super Mario Galaxy 2. You have literally every other mainstream console Super Mario title on Switch now. Why leave out what many consider to be the stronger Galaxy title?
Re: Super Mario LEGO Has Been One Of The Company's Most Successful Launches
There'll be a LEGO Zelda set for Christmas, you watch.
Re: Sick Of Waiting For A New F-Zero? Far S Ultra Might Tickle Your Fancy
Fast RMX is easily the best spiritual successor to F-Zero. If anything, Nintendo could trust them with making one I feel.
Re: Introducing Pokémon Legends: Arceus, An Open-World Prequel To Diamond And Pearl
Expect this to get a delay later into 2022.
Re: Rumour: Zelda's 35th Anniversary Will See The Return Of Wind Waker And Twilight Princess
People are really not grasping why Skyward Sword is either first, or on it's own... and I don't know why.
You'll get your "Triforce Collection" with existing remakes such as Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess... just chill...
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 13th)
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 13th)
Re: Among Us Quickens Masahiro Sakurai's Pulse, But He's Not Sure How Long It Will Remain Popular
I really don't get the appeal. And I also don't understand why a game released in 2018 was eligible for 2020 game awards. It wasn't even for the ongoing categories...
