New Pokémon Snap is right around the corner, launching on Nintendo Switch this Friday, but can it possibly live up to fans' excitement?
Reviews for the game have now been published, including our very own. Below, we've rounded up a selection of quotes and review scores from a number of different outlets to see just how well the title's gone down with the media ahead of its launch.
Before we dive in, we'd naturally like to urge you to check out our very own review:
- The Nintendo Life Review: New Pokémon Snap - The Best-Looking Pokémon Game Yet, And A Joyous Revival
Right, now you've read through our final verdict, let's see what other critics had to say.
We'll start things off with Eurogamer, who awarded the game a 'Eurogamer Recommended':
"While New Pokémon Snap relies on the foundation built by the original game, it has managed to develop these mechanics to create a longer, more fulfilling, experience. An ever-present charm runs throughout the game, from how well the Pokémon models are rendered to the photo editing feature, which allows you to add some pizzazz to your favourite pictures."
Game Informer gave the game a very healthy score of 8.5/10:
"New Pokémon Snap delivers an experience similar to that of the original while expanding on the formula in ways that prolong the appeal of the expedition. In the two decades since the first game’s release, the Pokémon world has changed in innumerable ways, but the simple appeal of immersing yourself in this universe and taking pictures has remained unchanged."
The Guardian were slightly less impressed, offering up 3 stars out of 5:
"It is still enjoyable, because the Pokémon themselves are so interesting to look at; it’s just not wildly exciting. It’s a laid-back game and one that offers many hours of gentle photographic research to anyone drawn to Pokémon’s weird world – whether you’re a veteran of 90s Pokémania, or a nine-year-old."
VG247 went one up from that with 4 stars out of 5, here's what they had to say:
"If you’re the sort of player who got really mad about the national Pokedex in Sword & Shield, you might also bemoan the level of content here. But I think this is plenty, delivering far more than the original and with a whole lot of replay value – it’s just a shame the developers felt the need to stretch it out artificially to justify what they’ve managed to build."
GameSpot joined us in awarding the game an 8/10, saying fans have gotten 'more than they bargained for':
"Fans clamored for a Pokemon Snap remake for years, and with New Pokemon Snap, we've gotten even more than we bargained for: a great sequel that pulls from all eight generations of Pokemon released so far, dynamic courses that can be explored during both daytime and nighttime, and the ability to create an album of edited, personalized Pokemon photos..."
And finally, IGN also went with a score of 8/10, calling it a 'successful modern reinvention' of the original:
"After a 22-year gap, New Pokémon Snap is a successful modern reinvention of all the best ideas of Pokémon Snap, with more courses, more Pokémon, and more reasons to revisit familiar spots in pursuit of the perfect shot."
New Pokémon Snap launches on 30th April and is available to buy either digitally from the Switch eShop, or physically at retail. Are you looking forward to playing the game this Friday? Let us know in the comments.

The Guardian being like "the stupid game is calm"
I like that they've done this game, but I feel like it's a one I'll never get round to playing.
@FroZtedFlakerZz They gave Abzu 5 stars and that game is relaxing as hell! It's funny how they go from "Ooh, this game is really good and relaxing!" to "Ew, this game's relaxing!"
The artificial padding and them not having as much content as I hoped makes me want to wait on a sale to get this.
Nice round-up, thanks.
"It’s a laid-back game and one that offers many hours of gentle photographic research"
Well considering ACNH has sold over 30mil and you don't do much more than that, I don't think "laid-back" is going to hurt the Nintendo brand any. And, oh yeah, Pokémon.
I don't know what this game is going to sell, but I expect it to make money. Lots of money.
I do think it's funny that every review relates back to the original. Which was 22 years ago on a system that only sold 32m units. I'm guessing more than half of the people playing this will have never played the original, so maybe don't review the game based on that?
Would have been really nice to put the original on NO or sell it as a $20 eShop game since nobody seems capable of talking about this game w/o referencing a game from 22 years ago. I know it's available on Wii and Wii U but Wii was 10 years ago and Wii U only sold 13 mil. Nintendo being Nintendo.
@FroZtedFlakerZz
Yeah they need to find different reviewers if they are going to complain about a game being a type they are not interested in. It's one thing if they had complaints about technical faults in the game itself. But giving a Pokemon Snap game a lower score because it is a Pokemon Snap game? SMH
I read the full Guardian review, it does in part sound like it's just not a game for them but also their gripes, for the most part, sound perfectly fair. Not things that concern me or dull my excitement for this game, but fair points such as the long narrative sections and repetitiveness in revisiting areas detracting from the overall experience of a chill and relaxed game. Not deriding the game for being relaxed and chill.
Not all games need to scream bloody murder and need things being beaten to a pulp left and right. Having some chill games like this is perfectly fine and I'm definitely looking forward to it. The reviewers seem overall pretty happy with it in any case, can't wait to find out for myself!
It is just a relaxing game for the Pokemon fans. It is not made to score 10s everywhere. But it will sell like crazy as it has the Pokemon Title.
I will definitely get it down the road
@Kalmaro "artificial padding and them not having as much content as I hoped"
Has anybody really gone into detail about what is actually in this game? 8 worlds, but I don't think I've read how long each ride is. Since it's on rails it should be a known entity. 200 Pokemon but it wasn't in the NL review, which I thought was weird.
With 8 areas and 200 Pokemon, w/ needing 4 pics of each Pokemon, and branching rides, and day or night variations, well it seems like a lot in the game for a full priced "photo mode", but it would be nice to see about how long 1 can expect to play it.
I know how I play these games, 1 ride through, day and night, take some pics, then move on. I spent 4 hours playing the Miitopia demo yesterday, I'd settle for a 1 hour New Pokemon Snap demo, 1 ride day and night, and never need the game.
@rjejr https://howlongtobeat.com collates user records for how long games take to beat with different play styles and gives an average. In my experience it's usually about right. This game hasn't been out very long though so at time of writing this comment there's only one recorded playthrough clocking 9.5 hours.
This is the quintessential 8/10. Nice...looking forward to playing it
It'll be a nice chill bank holiday weekend playing this
Shaping up to be exactly what I thought it would be. definitely getting this
Nice!
How about a new F-Zero GX now?!
Still baffles me that the game isn't available for preorder on the official Nintendo store 🤷♂️
Will there likely be a Pokémon Snap 3?
Probably my most unpopular opinion in gaming is that Pokémon Snap (the original) is an incredibly boring game that was only meant as a tech demo to show off Pokémon in 3D. I tried the game multiple times at friends houses, rented it a few times, and I never could get into it or see the appeal outside of “Pokémon, without the gameplay, but in 3D!” Even being a massive Pokémon fan, it just wasn’t for me.
With that being said, I am SO happy this exists for the many many fans who have been wanting a new entry for so many years. I’m happy to see it getting such good reviews too! This is a side game I never thought we’d see again and I’m so happy for all of the Pokémon Snap fans who finally get a new game. 😊 It gives me hope as an F-Zero/Advance Wars/Wario Land fan that, maybe someday, we’ll finally get a new entry!
So.... It's exactly what we expect Pokemon Snap to be.
@marck13 or even just a remaster of GX! Please Nintendo! 😭
So I never played the first one but I recently decided to clean out my screenshot folder and was surprised to see that I took over 400 screenshots of Pokemon Sword. Clearly there is something about taking pictures of Pokemon that appeals to me. Seeing all those positive reviews, I'll definitely get this one
Trust the non gaming website to be the one to get it the least!
My copy has dispatched and will hopefully be arriving tomorrow to start snapping in!
Meh not interested in this especially not for £45
Sounds like it didn't have enough dramatic car chases for the Guardian...
Who would have ever thought a game about photography would be laid back?
@Kalmaro it's a Nintendo game so you'll be waiting a long time 🙈
@Would_you_kindly The option option is for me to wait until it's cheaper in another region and try there. Argentina often has stuff cheaper than the US
Technically, I could get this game cheaper by $5 if I bought it from Brazil
@Ogbert Thanks. That website has been my go to as my family and I try to coordinate game plays for family time.
But $60 is $60 so I expect a review to mention about how long one might expect to play a game. I know every game and every person is different, and this isn't a JRPG, but I'd expect something like - it would take you hundreds of hours to get 4 star photos of all 200 Pokemon, but for those who just want to ride thru the 8 on rails sections you're probably looking at about a dozen hours of play time.
Something like that. Especially considering so many reviews have mentioned the previous game, and they have almost all mentioned how short the previous game was, so saying how long this game is is kind of a no brainer. I'd settle for "while each on rails ride varies in length, they average about 2 - 3 minutes." Or they could be 15 minutes, I haven't the slightest idea. Which is the point.
PS = Forgot this part.
@Ogbert "This game hasn't been out very long though"
I think technically it doesn't release until Friday, but that 9.5 hour mark I suppose could have come from a reviewer. That sounds about right for getting and seeing most of what there is to do. I imagine Pokemon fans spending more if they are into editing the photos.
For 10 hours I may borrow it from my library.
@rjejr it should be very short. I am guessing that the impatient people like me will no play more than 8 or 10 hours. Photo perfectionist (wich is the actual target of this game) would sunk hundreds of hours on it tho.
If you buy games based on the drivel written in The Guardian you don’t deserve to be a gamer.
@Jackpaza0508 different reviewers?
It's so funny seeing fanboys up in arms ready to tear down the Guardian when it just said that it's "a laid-back game" 😂
Seriously, what's wrong with you?
@ok1 After working at Walmart for almost 10years, just the thought of being back there is enough to give me anxiety, lol.
You're not wrong though, good suggestion.
@Snakesglowcaps Oh yeah, I forgot about that lol
i bought it today
This looks like the sort of game my youngest would appreciate - no need to "catch em all" or go into battle - just take pics of pokemon all day.
The Guardian? Why the Guardian? I feel like their opinion on the game would be as relevant as if Nintendo reviewed the new Ford Mustang.
@ok1 "It is still enjoyable, because the Pokémon themselves are so interesting to look at; it’s just not wildly exciting. It’s a laid-back game and one that offers many hours of gentle photographic research to anyone drawn to Pokémon’s weird world – whether you’re a veteran of 90s Pokémania, or a nine-year-old."
I don't know, I don't see any negative comments in this statement.
It's literally saying that a chill game is laid back, the horror.
@abdias "Photo perfectionist"
I would think those people would be taking real photos and not playing video games. 😉
@Kalmaro cheap person u are lol.already preloaded on my switch waiting for me to get off work friday
Wait wait wait. The name of this game is actually "New Pokémon Snap"? Oh, Nintendo... Smh
@rjejr you'd be wrong, I work professionally with audio and video but 1-pandemic still going on and while some jobs have returned a lot are still cancelled, but mostly 2- I can't take photos or videos of Pokémon in real life 🤷♂️ looking back now I really do believe original Snap probably influenced me in thinking about framing and the fleeting moment of pictures etc. and I'm super excited for Friday.
My son is eagerly awaiting this game unlocking! I’m looking forward to watching him play it.
@Bentendo1609 @Heavyarms55 it’s written by Keza MacDonald, who used to write for IGN before she headed up Kotaku UK for a while. People are assuming that because it’s not a gaming specific outlet that they don’t have experienced games industry journalists?
Also don’t go off the tiny snippet posted here, the review is actually very reasonable and fair and is not being negative because it’s a relaxed game but because of other elements of the game that irked them.
@Muddy_4_Ever Mario kart is a pretty chill game? I thought it was hectic.
@dux Yeah I suppose the pandemic has been hard on professional photographers, less weddings, graduations, etc, so I'll accept your admonishment and stand corrected. Nice that this new game can bring you back to your "origin story". Enjoy.
@Ogbert yeah... I still don't really care what the Guardian has to say on video games no matter what sellout they hired.
@Heavyarms55 That's fine nobody is saying you have to. But this is a review that many will go off, we often forget here that we are not the majority of sales on places like this.
@rjejr I wasn't trying to be too harsh on you, we've all been hit differently by the pandemic and there is no way for you to know how everyone's fields have changed! Things are specially bad here in Brazil, but I've been lucky enough to still manage to find (new) work to do.
But I love Pokémon, I love photography/cinema/video, this game always had a special place in my heart and I'm looking forward to the new one!
@rjejr No, I didn't take it as hard at all. I just didn't see professional photographers being that into video games as they all seem to like being out in the real world taking pictures of nature and dogs and kids and nudes and stuff. When was the last time you met someone who said "I'm a professional photographer, I take pictures of video games." That just isn't a thing in my head.
Also as someone who has been enjoying the recent spring weather I just the other day realized no matter how photorealistic video game graphics get they'll never be liferealistic b/c they are still 2D and life is 3D for people w/ 2 functioning eyeballs. No matter how good things look on my 75" 4k HDR tv, real life always looks nicer, b/c depth I'm assuming. We have 2 eyes, they were literally made for depth perception. Real depth perception, not fake. So as a photographer I think you would lose that aspect looking at a 2D screen - where's the depth?
But as you correctly pointed out, I can see how someone who got started w/ photo modes in games - I got some great ACNH shots of my wife and my avatar's on NYE since the pandemic kept us home - could then move on to photography, and therefore be interested in both. So you enlightened me, I didn't feel bad at all reading your reply. 😊
@rjejr aren't videogames great? Even when something is your job they can still manage to make it fun. My sister for example is an architect and she loves building and decorating the houses in The Sims. A lot of designers manage a lot of stuff in Animal Crossing, and Assassin's Creed even has an education mode now for all the historians out there!
Also, BuzzFeed released a video with professional wildlife photographers (I'm far removed from that) playing New Snap and they seemed to enjoy it a lot, even the least realistic aspects of it, and even while recognizing its limitations.
@Jackpaza0508 the game's price might be the factor that makes the difference between the two.
@dux Oh man, can't believe I replied to myself in that last comment. Well I can believe it b/c I'm a mess, but still. Looks like you somehow saw it, so that's good. Cool story about the NG photographers, hadn't seen it. I suppose they could be happy that after 22 years somebody finally made a game about photography rather than just a mode.
As for designers in AC, well once that store opened up and Mabel explained the back wall internet collection shopping wazzit I had a big lightbulb moment over my head and I was like "Oh WOW, that's who this game is for!! It's for all the people who bought AC:HHD. It's all about adding your own designs to the clothes and even the island itself." I made a couple, but it's not my thing. And while I'm sure a lot of players forget it's even there I'm also sure a lot of people are really into it.
So yeah, I can see how that relates to real life. themoreyouknow.gif
Hey @NEStalgia this is a reply to some comment you made yesterday in another article as well. Something about genres. You're smart, I figure you'll figure it out. 😉
