Would make more sense to just release GBA games on 3DS, but at least they picked one of the best gba games to remake. Hopefully they don't add hours of tutorials like the recent games have had.
Does this have standard single player modes or is it all versus battles? I'm going to get destroyed in versus so I just want to make sure there are the more traditional options as well.
@Steelhead me too. I would rather play in a portable fashion since I travel a lot for work, but won't be getting a switch until fall in all likelihood when I know more about games and features. It's quite the dilemma.
@Kit they basically scrapped any WiiU functionality when they knew the system was dead. Would be hard for ten to create two different inventory management systems I suppose. What's funny is the slate is ckeaely supposed to be a game pad, so they probably removed some cool second screen ideas.
This news and the reports of joy con syncing issues (along with lack of compelling titles not already on WiiU) make me glad I held off. Everything about the general system build makes it sound like a quality system that will eventually be worth having assuming the software library is strong.
@SmaMan I've long stopped trying to figure Nintendo's VC efforts out in NA. Japan gets a ton. Europe seems decent in that they get them 6 months before we do. There is basically no reason to not release more games on new 3DS. Should be able to handle GBA just fine. The WiiU may have issues with third party licensing costs where they might not think they will make the money back, but I doubt it (and Japan is already rolling in those games). I doubt they even want to put the effort forward in improving the service.
Probably some info on how the mobile title interacts with this game.
What should be included is a way to transfer your designs from HHD into new leaf via amiibo cards. Not that I have those but sounds like it makes sense (so probably won't happen).
I will start playing again if the incorporate the new design controls from HHD though.
It makes no sense not having upload ability since you need to be tethered to wifi to play the 100 Mario course since it draws from wiiU created levels. Even with that, the inability of the 3DS to log on to many external wifi signals that require a webpage approval (think every store, restaurant, hotel wifi) makes this essentially a level creator unless you are home. Which makes it even more ridiculous you cannot upload courses.
The removal of mystery mushrooms also removes an incentive to slog through the terrible levels of 100 Mario challenge. This couldn't have been a worse thought out port.
@CrazedCavalier definitely interested in 3DS announcements. I have a wiiU but tracks every other week for work, so potable gaming is my best option. I hope the 3DS has life until 2018 like the new rumors suggest. Would keep me occupied for a while (then I could get the NX on a discount/remodel with cheaper games).
There will not bea price drop. Reggie just said the new galaxy style 3DS that officially is on sale on Friday retails at 199.99. Wouldn't make much sense to announce that this week then price drop tomorrow. Especially when the videos were likely shot at the same time.
@BensonUii I think this is pretty likely as well. Would be a good way to make some easy money off of their already developed emulator. Just depends on licensing issues, but doubt that is too difficult. Hopefully we get a word about square Vc releases as well. Not expecting much other than this being a marketing platform for their announced releases. Maybe a galaxy port to 3DS since the Galaxy 3Dxl reveal was way to suspicion now that a direct was announced.
It looks like they are repurposing the blue casing from Japan for this? Hopefully there is a little more to this announcement but if there was, you think they would have released info alongside this video.
Hopefully this bodes well for continued 3ds support for a little while longer. I know if NX is a handheld the focus will shift but a boost in sales this year could be leveraged for some software sales down the line. If nothing else Nintendo can continue to increase their VC and digital offerings for thr 3ds.
Of course this is announced when I just upgraded my original 3DS to a new XL. At least I got more screen real estate and the system doesn't take a minute to load. Would have preferred the smaller form factor though.
Didn't read all of the comments to see if people mentioned this yet, but it looks like it was speculation from industry analysts not actual news. Might want to put an update.
The problem with advance wars is that it is not a hit in Japan anymore and is relegated to the bottom of Nintendo's gaming totem pole. The most recent game didn't even come out in Japan I don't think (or at least not until it was a club Nintendo reward). They also changed its presentation to go pretty dark, which is largely out of character for the franchise (going way back to the famicom days). I would love for an AW series revival, but I'm not sure Nintendo wants to cannibalize on FE's newfound success in the West by diverting resources away from future development.
I like the button animation (also suggests NX will have a traditional control scheme? Or at least the cross like button layout even if not physical buttons...Nintendo wouldn't waste marketing dollars to scrap this initiative in 9 months. The problem I have with it is the lack of the nintendo logo on during the catchphrase. Seems to me Nintendo needs all the brand reinforcement they can get during advertising.
Although I am generally opposed to using a roster slot as a marketing ploy (though it has been done before in Smash), the characters introduced all look very unique and fun to play. I am slightly disappointed there weren't more stage releases (and maybe a returning vet or two) though. Still, the amount of extra content in this game is staggering.
@Aerona I agree. They need to have some big draws for the next smash game. I would prefer to have some of the newer/obscure characters featured in the lead up to release rather than DLC characters. With the crazy number of characters in this game, the gamer fury is going to be astronomical when characters get cut from the next game.
@hcfwesker it's not listed but eShop cards are 10% off until the 19th as well. They were 15% on thanksgiving weekend unadvertised, so I snagged one then. The past two years I've noticed 20% off sales after the holidays (probably to get people with cash and gift cards on the door).
I guess treasurenauts will not be coming out anymore? That game is at least a year behind its original release date. Their ports of the DS games were likely doomed from the start and have been panned critically. That genre and subpar reviews aren't going to net too many sales on 3DS too be honest.
I do hope they are successful though because I don't want to seethed fail as they seem to actual put a lot of effort into their work.
@c1pher_c0mplet my experience has been pretty bad. Terrible connection and absolutely horrible puzzle solvers. The icons can only do so much, especially when players have the one item you need to advance (the worst is trying to tell the people with gust jars to blow the swinging platforms to get everyone to the next area). Personally, more level specific icons would go a long way.
I will admit I haven't had much time to play since I started a new job and have a 1 year old. Single player is better than reviews said (at least the initial levels). I play on the bus home and if you play it as a puzzle game rather than action game, single player is a lot of fun (expect it to be slow and then you won't get as frustrated with moving every totem over and over).
@Inkling-Inc I feel the same way. 3DS had announcement after announcement. WiiU got one "new" game announcement and that was a remake (maybe there were more but I don't remember them). Clearly any new home console games are being saved for NX (though I suspect some might become WiiU games too but just won't be announced until the NX announcements). It was still a good direct but just shows that WiiU is over.
I think gyro probably will be the best way to play this game, but I do have some hesitation. I just started plying LoZ: WW, and gyro is usually amazing for your items. The only problem I noticed is that it is really hard to use when you get to a circular arena because you inevitably move the gamepad all over the place and then have to work on resetting it. I mostly had this happen against the second dungeon boss using the boomerang, and it was very uncomfortable/annoying.
I could see how the gamepad could be tough to use in dogfight settings in all range mode. Maybe the stick controls for turning around and the limited frame in your cockpit view make it not that big a problem? Still nice to have options.
Unfortunately, only a few of the acclaimed indie games of the past 5 years have come out on Nintendo platforms, and that situation isn't going to get any better until the next console due to the difference in power/ability to run different engines or programming languages. On top of this, almost all indie games these days are Metroidvania types or puzzle platformers.
Part of the problem is the Nintendo consumer, but I would say Nintendo itself is the bigger problem.
@MrRaven1972 Unfortunately, they need to kill it off. It is a drain on their finances and has almost no chance of making up ground. Unfortunatey because it is a pretty slick system with some neat concepts and game design possibilities. They have resigned themselves to this fact it seems as they didn't pull out all of the stops for the system. The only reason they returned to profitability was because of exchange rates and amiibo being a bigger success then they thought.
@Hachiko Not necessarily. We know that Nintendo immediately moves on to their next platform. They also unified the R&D divisions for console/handheld, so they likely have resources to crank something new out. What is abundantly clear is, that if the NX is as capable as the PS4/XBone, they could likely get a lot of the great third party support. The other consoles seem to have few real exclusives, which might make NX appealing to other gamers if they can get the great 3rd party stuff.
Of course, that is likely a pipe dream because it might not sell well and Nintendo's target audience appears to never buy 3rd party software (admittedly, there hasn't really been comparable hardware for the past 10 years). I just know that Gamecube was the most powerful but it was not a great sales success. nintendo tends to do better when they go outside the box, but that hurts them with the "core" gamers/developers.
@Peach64 I think it might be a handheld devise with a set top box that streams to the tv. That way you can use it on the go and at home. This would probably fit the Japanese push to mobile while still satisfying home console fans. The problem would be what is under the hood to get 3rd parties interested. Although, if you had the ability to play 3DS/WiiU games on a single system now, there would be a ton of content to get people excited.
Whatever it ends up being, it is clear that the WiiU is not long for this world with what has been said form multiple Nintendo people. I say 2 years at best. Hopefully we get a traditional metroid out of it though .
@Gridatttack It will eventually come, but not until NX (which appears to be a console replacement if Tanabe is to be believed). It sounds like they haven't been developing Prime 4 and it would take a least 3 years to make. At that point NX would be out. This says nothing of the more traditional metroid games that are made by Sakamoto. So I don't think Metroid fans will be satisfied anytime soon.
@JaxonH Star Fox is perfect for online. You can have the dogfights that were in the 64 version, but you could also have a cooperative mode that actually utilizes all 4 airwings. That could be in the story mode or it could be in some battle arenas or courses specifically design for this mode. That would add some longevity to the game. Think Warhawk for PS3. Of course, that would require voice chat, so it would be a waste with Nintendo.
@Shy_Guy It was smart to leave that out. Waste of time when they can just press release it and send people spot pass or whatever. Though they do need to announce it soon.
@Brett Especially since they skip out on TGS. This is their biggest stage of the year and they didn't deliver. If people think the other directs come close to this viewership they are kidding themselves. Maybe Nintendo is thinking that some announcements will get lost in the deluge of game announcements, but they need to realize that this is the time when their most ardent supporters and people that might be willing to buy multiple consoles are watching. They need to have something big every year saved just for this show. The way they ended it was sub-optimal to say the least. I just think they seem to forget what the audience is for this event.
@Yorumi I actually think the gyro controls will be good if they are like Splatoon, but hopefully they have the ability to go traditional (I think this was mentioned but don't remember). No online is inexcusable for this game. Could have all sorts of cool modes with the vehicle transformations.
The Animal Crossing game was the worst part of the show. I was certain they would transition from happy home designer to a WiiU version where you could import your designs into the game using the amiibo. Seems like a perfect use of the functionality and a way to upsell another game and figures/cards to users. Think about how easy it would be to populate your town with the characters you want and design their homes. But that seems like a wasted opportunity (maybe a Wii U AC is still coming but wasn't ready to show). I don't even know what the game is supposed to be even.
This is especially dumb since NOA just tweeted you can design town facilities as well in HHD. Major missed opportunity.
It will be even better when it drops to $15 a year after release like sonics ultimate genesis collection. This is a pretty good deal already and a decent complement to the new games coming out on the XBone. I'm more surprised about how many people here seem to have forgotten that Microsoft has owned Rare for 10+ years now.
@Eat_Pie Wasn't it out of print for most of that time span? I know I needed to get a used copy because it was too expensive to warrant buying a new copy. Wasn't it also not available on the eshop until a bit after release (might be thinking of another early game though).
I could see a wiiU entry being successful if they would employ the splatoon (and what I assume will be in Star Fox) motion control scheme (with options to use sticks for those that want to). A game with mostly the flying sections and even crazier set pieces could be pretty awesome.
@Tsurii some of the content isn't complete and will receive an August update. That stuff is new modes for ranked battle and the ability to stay in teams with friends. I think they probably will add a few more stages and weapons at that point as well. This current stuff is already prepared but being drip fed the audience to help hold interest and let players develop before more complex modes are introduced.
Also checkout his retronauts podcast (the old one if it is still accessible and the new one).
@Peach64 The ambition is not much weirder than chrontendo (which may have been an inspiration for this project), which seeks to catalog the NES games from order of release. In fact, the Gameboy was arguably one of the most important touchstones in gaming, so cataloging its lineup is very important for history's sake. I don't want to speak for him, but Mr. Parish does detailed analysis of game levels through his Anatomy of a Game series, so he seems to have a love for this sort of deep retrospective and review for things in this medium that shaped it so much.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Franchises We Want to See at E3 - Kid Icarus
@Eat_Pie Wasn't it out of print for most of that time span? I know I needed to get a used copy because it was too expensive to warrant buying a new copy. Wasn't it also not available on the eshop until a bit after release (might be thinking of another early game though).
I could see a wiiU entry being successful if they would employ the splatoon (and what I assume will be in Star Fox) motion control scheme (with options to use sticks for those that want to). A game with mostly the flying sections and even crazier set pieces could be pretty awesome.
Re: Get Messy in Splatoon's Latest Free Stage, Kelp Dome, Tomorrow
@Tsurii some of the content isn't complete and will receive an August update. That stuff is new modes for ranked battle and the ability to stay in teams with friends. I think they probably will add a few more stages and weapons at that point as well. This current stuff is already prepared but being drip fed the audience to help hold interest and let players develop before more complex modes are introduced.
Re: Ninterview: Jeremy Parish On Cataloguing The History Of The Game Boy, One Game At A Time
@TeeJay History is boring? You don't understand the appeal of understanding what happened in the past? Seriously?
Re: Ninterview: Jeremy Parish On Cataloguing The History Of The Game Boy, One Game At A Time
I recommend that people check out some of Mr. Parish's retrospectives on the subject.
