@rjejr "And whatever happened to Eurogamer? Such big insider info months ago but nothing since? That doesn't seem right."
That's a good point. I was actually thinking about that the other day. It doesn't sit right with me to think that those guys had such massive insider info from allegedly multiple inside sources, but then they just go completely silent after that? I don't know, maybe Nintendo sniffed out and culled the traitors, meaning those people are no longer getting info that they can feed to eurogamer.
Hmmm. Well, it's definitely fun to see such a massive graphical overhaul of an ancient game. But considering that the original Castlevania had some of my favorite 8-bit art/graphics and character sprites, I actually think the game loses all its charm when you move it out of its original style.
@Henmii I think it goes without saying that Nintendo definitely give a "bleep", since the success or otherwise of NX will likely dictate their future as a platform holder.
My sources tell me that Nintendo are actually going to surprise everyone and bump the release date up and release NX at the end of this November, and that they'll officially unveil the system just before that date. I have sources, so there's no reason not to believe me.
@PlywoodStick "Perhaps that means the console market as we know it has become obsolete... "
I'm beginning to come around to that idea. I think Scorpio and PS4 Pro are solid evidence that the console market is evolving away from the model we've come to recognize and expect, at least in terms of the approach to generations. The industry is pushing for iterative console upgrades and quicker turnaround between those upgrades, and along with that we're seeing significantly reduced periods of time between console announcements and console releases than we've grown accustomed to. It remains to be seen how consumers will respond to any of it, and how they react will dictate whether or not these changes become standard practice in the future, but it's an interesting experiment, in the least.
@PlywoodStick "See, this is why it's a bad idea to wait until the last minute to reveal your product... They're currently banking on the most fickle of audiences."
But doesn't that mean that waiting so long to unveil NX could potentially be a good move? If the target audience are a bunch of "fickle" people with short attention spans, you don't want to give those people a year or two to forget about your console. Announcing the thing and then releasing it soon thereafter means that you can capitalize on the impulsive tendencies of the fickle new-phone-every-year market. That's my take on the situation, anyway.
@MeloMan If you have an iPhone, just go to the App Store and search for Super Mario Run. Then when you find it, their should be a "NOTIFY" button. Tap it.
@Koapa If that were true, Nintendo would have just dumped all their old games on iOS and Android without any regard whatsoever for quality or playability. Obviously they're intending for this move to smartphones to generate revenue (which shouldn't surprise you since they're a for-profit company). But the fact that this will be their first true game on smartphones after having announced their entry to the platform like a year-and-a-half ago shows that they're also interested in taking their time to deliver a game that's as good and playable on the platform as possible.
This game is even being produced/directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, the two guys that basically gave birth to Mario, and Miyamoto has said that this is the most directly-involved he's been in a game's development in a long time. I think all of that is enough to at least warrant some faith from fans that what Nintendo are doing with mobile games is more than just a cynical cash-grab, and that they might actually care about the quality of their products regardless of what platform they're on.
@SniffitisWhiffit You owe it to yourself to play some Kirby games! Really, just about any Kirby game would suffice, because they're mostly all great. If you have a 3DS, the most recent Kirby game, Planet Robobot, was nigh-immeasurably awesome, in my humble opinion.
@LegendOfPokemon It's called football because it evolved from what the rest of the world calls football. It basically started out as just soccer, but then evolved into a more rugby style game (which is actually technically called rugby football), and the name "football" followed it throughout its evolution since the two sports it evolved from both had football in their names.
@rjejr I post plenty of comments that aren't negative. It's just that if I'm replying to another person directly, it's probably because I think that person has said something worthy of scorn, so naturally it follows that my replies to those people would be "negative". But hey, it's pretty funny for you of all people to be chastising someone for gratuitous negativity lol. Like 90% of your comments on this site range from petty complaints to outright whining.
@rjejr Geez, dude. I think you need to take a break from reading about Nintendo for a while. Your comments about NX and Nintendo in general get progressively more angry with each one you post, and your habit of misspelling "Nintendo" has gotten to where you're leaving off entire syllables, so clearly you're more stressed than normal. Maybe take a step back and relax. I don't want you to have an aneurysm or something.
@RyanSilberman Nope. I'm one of those people who doesn't take everything in life dead serious, least of all something like a stylistic change in a video game series, so when such a thing comes along I choose to look for the positives and base my final judgment on whether those positives outweight the negatives and on the merits of the game instead of incessantly whining and sh*tting on Nintendo because they didn't feel like making the same game over and over and over in perpetuity all in the name of appeasing a very vocal minority of fans. Just my take on things, though.
Huh. I actually didn't vote on either question because my response isn't an option. I don't think it's an either/or situation that extends equally across every game. In my opinion, it really just depends on the game, period, no caveats or qualifiers. In something like a fighting game or a shooter, frame rate is a higher priority. But in a massive open-world rpg, for example, I want better textures and draw-distance and things like that.
Man, I honestly had no clue how utterly joyless and toxic "Paper Mario fans" were until recently. Really sucks the life out of what has overall been a very good series.
@RyanSilberman Hey, you seem like fun. Oo, and a youtube channel recommendation as prestigious as "arlo" will definitely help to drive your point home.
My best streetpass experience was last summer when I went to Disneyland and I took my 3DS in my backpack specifically to get streetpasses, and I got around 80 in one day. And a lot of them were from different countries, so it was pretty neat.
Um, yeah. I don't think so. For one, these are obviously intentionally vague and piggy-backing on previous rumors. For another, the packaging being "slightly larger than that of Wii U" contradicts those rumors that this is meant to imitate; why would a portable system need packaging that's larger than a system that came with not only a full-size console, but a giant bulky GamePad, and charging bricks for both? And the color of the packaging being white and blue? Really? Because that's the color of Wii U's packaging and branding, and common sense tells you that Nintendo would desperately want to avoid repeating Wii U in any way.
But more importantly, Nintendo would never disclose important details to anyone at the retail level with the exception of maybe top-tier executives, and you're not going to see Best Buy's and GameStop's CEO's blabbing to a subreddit. And even then, as close-to-the-vest as Nintendo are playing NX, I actually doubt they'd give anything other than the bare minimum shipping/stocking info to anyone at retail, even a high-level executive.
My experience with mynintendo is this: It launched. It confused me. I immediately gave up on trying to understand it. I don't even remember that it's a thing until I see a story about it on this site. I miss Club Nintendo.
@Shiryu My sentiments more or less echo everything you wrote in this comment, except I already owned an Xbox 360 when I got my Wii U, and I (very) briefly owned a PS4. But my wife and I prefer Nintendo games over everything else out there so I sold the PS4 and bought a 3DS. Because at least with a 3DS, the gaps in Wii U's release schedule have been somewhat filled in with something from Nintendo. And for that reason, I'm really hopeful that NX is the hybrid system everyone thinks it will be, because it'll mean not having to buy two systems to play all of Nintendo's current output, and it'll (hopefully) mean that the system will have a healthier library than either Wii U or 3DS could have on their own since Nintendo won't have to split their development resources two ways.
@Shiryu Yours and @ThomasBW84 's comments made me feel genuinely sad for my poor, beloved Wii U. I've never been the biggest Paper Mario diehard around, but I will definitely be picking this one up if for no other reason than to show my Wii U some love.
@ThanosReXXX Sure, sure. It definitely isn't a good Metroid game, but I think it's a good game in general. As a fan of pew-pew shooting games, there's not much else to scratch that itch on 3DS.
@ThanosReXXX To be fair, I'd be fine with the 3DS Pikmin being Pikmin 4, just as long as we get another full/standard Pikmin game at some point. I love that series, so I'll take as much of it as I can get.
Yeah, I commented on this on the article about the announcement of the system a few days ago but I wasn't 100% sure if I was right. Anyway, it makes sense to keep them proportionate to the console since they basically integrate into the console itself, but man I would have a hard time with those things.
@rjejr I've been keeping my ear to the ground for Pikmin 4 news. Even though I'm personally looking forward to the 3DS Pikmin game, I'm hopeful that it's not the Pikmin 4 Miyamoto was referring to and that NX will see a full-fledged game in the series.
@Kevlar44 No, it actually doesn't. Even if ROM hacks aren't themselves outright illegal (if they're released as a standalone patch), that doesn't change the fact that Nintendo can shut down any website that distributes them if they use their characters' names/likenesses or their game's name to promote the hack, or shut down every YouTube channel that does a let's-play of the mod, under the DMCA. This all comes down to the fact that Nintendo owns the copyrights and trademarks of everything associated with SM64, so if someone is using their copyrighted IP to push products that use that IP, Nintendo can claim DMCA to take that content down, which effectively blocks the ability to mass-distribute the hack. This is a method Nintendo has used before, and I see no reason why they wouldn't do it again. @Braok
@Phin68 I second what @Ryu_Niiyama said. Defending their IP is an eternal endeavor for Nintendo. It'll only stop when people stop using their IP without permission. Also, I know (or at least hope) you're joking about the NX part, but I feel compelled to point out the obvious fact that defending copyrights of old games doesn't have any impact on unveiling a new console.
@Wandman5612 The ones I got were the alternate colors, but the standard colors were also on sale. I don't remember if they were discounted as heavily as the alternates, though. The only problem was, they didn't have the standard ones in stock, and haven't for several months.
@CB85 Yeah that's fine, I don't have a problem with being skeptical at this point since Nintendo are clearly not playing by the standard rule book that everyone's used for the last three decades, so anything's possible. I'm just saying there's really nothing to support a definitive statement that NX WILL be delayed.
@CB85 That's true if you're talking about software, but it's a different story for hardware. Generally speaking, Nintendo and other platform holders release hardware when they say they're going to, and that mainly comes down to the fact that the process of designing and manufacturing hardware is almost entirely different from that of producing a video game.
Games can be delayed for any of a thousand reasons- things like bugs and glitches, or failing certification, or holdups in ESRB rating, etc, or even just creative/directional changes that pop up late in the process. But with a console, none of those things apply. By the time a system is given a release date, the core design/architecture has been thoroughly tested and revised for months, and supply chain/manufacture are well established and mapped out all the way through to shipping. By the time a system gets a release date, the only thing likely to delay it is some surprise catostrophic problem, like Foxconn goes out of business, or someone finds a lethal flaw in the hardware after it's already been manufactured and is about to ship, or something along those lines.
There is one caveat to all this, though, and that's the fact that NX's March 2017 release date was given somewhat casually during a shareholders meeting, so it doesn't quite have the weight of near-certainty that an official release date given during the console's public unveiling would. That said, I personally doubt that Nintendo would have allowed that date to circulate unchallenged for so long if it wasn't at least plausible.
It's cool that they made the controllers to scale since full-size controllers docked to the side of a miniaturized machine would throw the whole thing off. But that said, I wouldn't want to play with that for very long.
(I'm basing this off of my personal perception of the controllers on this thing, which to me look scaled down to match the console. Am I the only one that noticed this, or am I just hallucinating?)
@AlternateButtons In all sincerity, you really need to take a breath and chill out. I've seen some crazy hyper-sensitive people meltdown and overreact on this site, but this is a new low.
@AlternateButtons "...you're acting like a jerk and it's uncalled for. Patronize me again and I will report you. We can keep discussing this but I won't put up with that tone."
Uhhhh, you know that's not how any of this works, right? As in, disagreeing with you doesn't equate to "patronizing" you, and patronizing you doesn't equate to a reportable offense. Nor does what I'm ACTUALLY doing, which is called "disagreeing with you/NOT patronizing you." Anyway, I sincerely regret that I poked the hornets nest of emotional instability that is the nintendolife comment section once again. Have a nice life, guy.
@AlternateButtons And Nintendo failing to unveil their new console in a specific window of time so as to abate the tantrums and soothe the nerves of impatient fans is somehow an affront to your sense of appreciation from them? Give me a break.
You know, if you really are a loyal Nintendo fan like you claim to be, you should be happy that Nintendo are taking their time with NX instead of just lazily blowing off the covers at some random gaming expo to meet people's arbitrary expectations. If anything, Nintendo's clear dedication to taking a measured approach with the unveiling of NX shows that they at least learned SOME of the right lessons from Wii U and are doing their damnedest to avoid repeating their mistakes with that system. It shows that they've learned that they can't take anything for granted, and that they can't just throw a new machine out into the market and expect it to sell 100-million units just because it has their name on it, and that they need to be deliberate and smart in their handling of NX.
Nintendo fans should take heart in the deeper implications of Nintendo's silence on NX instead of just whining like a bunch of children who can't wait to open their Christmas presents.
@EllenJMiller Nintendo owning any part of Ubisoft would blow my mind. Just knowing that Assassin's Creed: Mushroom Kingdom is possible would make my life measurably better. Watch_Toads. Yoshi Cell: Green List. Far Cryrule. I could list so many potential crossovers in this comment it's crazy.
@BensonUii I mean you're talking about performance issues in a game that isn't even out yet, so that's all just a complete guess. As for the mystery mushroom, I have no doubt that 3DS could handle it. The 3DS handles games with features significantly more complex than a Mario mushroom and some costumes, so it seems strange to me that this theory would actually make sense to people.
In all truth, I suspect that Nintendo has chosen to leave that and some other features out of the 3DS version to avoid burning owners of the Wii U version of Mario Maker; if the Wii U version is $60 and the 3DS version is $40, they have to give the Wii U version SOME kind of advantage in features. Otherwise, if they made the two versions identical in content, people would complain about having paid $20 extra for the same exact game. So while it sucks that the 3DS version won't have the ability to upload levels, it makes sense that Nintendo wouldn't want to get more deeply invested in managing even more servers for this game. Also, I'm sure my 'Wii U as the premium version' theory applies here, too.
Server issues are a separate discussion. That doesn't reflect on 3DS' capabilities, it reflects on Nintendo's willingness to foot the bill on servers. Don't forget that Nintendo doesn't charge customers for access to online features like their competition does, and managing servers is expensive. And for a game like Mario Maker, people will undoubtedly expect those servers to stay up for a very long time, and the longer Nintendo keeps those servers up, the more it diminishes Nintendo's profit on the game.
@BensonUii Like what though? Besides the 3D effect, to my knowledge the only other things missing from the 3DS version are the mystery mushroom and online level sharing, and I doubt those things have much if anything to do with the system's ability to handle them.
@MitchVogel I'm sure this is at least partly down to the fact that 100 Mario Challenge will be fed levels from the Wii U version, and getting those levels to display in 3D would obviously be tricky. Also tricky would be making levels in a 3D game where all the given assets' depths in the 3D field are pre-determined, because it could potentially limit players' choices in where they want to place certain items in their levels.
When a game is made for 3DS, on-screen item placement in the depth field has to be assigned during development; the effect is not just magically added by the 3DS display. So if a player decides that a particular item stands out or recesses more than they want it to in relation to the other items in their level, they might decide that the item is wrong for the level and ditch it.
Of course I'm just speculating, but I'm st least confident that it's not a matter of the hardware not being up to the task of displaying Mario Maker in 3D.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Has No Set Formula for Hardware Reveals, But NX is Testing Fans' Patience
@CB85 And you're making this definitive statement based on what?
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Has No Set Formula for Hardware Reveals, But NX is Testing Fans' Patience
@Nintenjoe64 Or it's neither and Nintendo are keeping it secret because it's their strategy for NX regardless of its quality...
Re: Feature: Taking the FAST Racing NEO Future Pack DLC for a Test Drive
These tracks all look great and I can't wait to play them later. Also, the ice one reminds me of Ice Ice Outpost from Mario Kart 8.
Re: The Mini Famicom Has Been Announced for Japan, and It Looks Amazing
@WiltonRoots ha, that would be awesome if that's what those rumors were actually talking about.
Re: The Mini Famicom Has Been Announced for Japan, and It Looks Amazing
It's cool that they made the controllers to scale since full-size controllers docked to the side of a miniaturized machine would throw the whole thing off. But that said, I wouldn't want to play with that for very long.
(I'm basing this off of my personal perception of the controllers on this thing, which to me look scaled down to match the console. Am I the only one that noticed this, or am I just hallucinating?)
Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October
@AlternateButtons In all sincerity, you really need to take a breath and chill out. I've seen some crazy hyper-sensitive people meltdown and overreact on this site, but this is a new low.
Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October
Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October
Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October
Seriously though, did ANYONE actually think Nintendo would unveil NX at... Paris Games Week...? Of all things?
Re: Nintendo to Skip Paris Games Week at the End of October
@AlternateButtons #75 lolol did someone forget to take their medicine today?
Re: Guillemot Praises NX Again as Ubisoft Shareholder Meeting Ends Without Vivendi Intervention

Re: Super Mario Maker for 3DS Won't Have 3D Support
Re: Super Mario Maker for 3DS Won't Have 3D Support
@BensonUii Like what though? Besides the 3D effect, to my knowledge the only other things missing from the 3DS version are the mystery mushroom and online level sharing, and I doubt those things have much if anything to do with the system's ability to handle them.
Re: Super Mario Maker for 3DS Won't Have 3D Support
