If you're a keen follower of the NFL, like this writer, then you'll have seen and read a lot about Odell Beckham Jr. (the highly-rated New York Giants Wide Receiver) in recent weeks. He's been involved in high profile tussles on the field, endured a poor run of form, behaved a little petulantly and picked a fight (which he lost) with a kicking net.
He turned it around this week, however, racking up career-high figures (222 yards and 2 touchdowns) and scoring what turned out to be the winning Touchdown; he milked the relationship with the kicking net, too, making this old cynic roll his eyes. Click that previous link to see the winning play - the NFL blocks playback of its YouTube videos, because it's the NFL...
So why the heck are we talking about this? Well, he may have benefited from some Kirby abilities.Tony Coffee sent us a link to his tweet, showing that 'OBJ' (as the NFL commentators like to call him) was rocking some Kirby-themed boots. Sure enough, we squinted at highlights videos from today and he was indeed wearing this snazzy footwear.
So that explains his sudden return to form.

In before the inevitable ludicrous "debate" on what sport(s) should be called "football."
Wowee! It's great to see such a prominent sports player wearing that apparel. Hopefully this increases Kirby's popularity (like it should) 😃
@PanurgeJr Yeah, why American football is named as such is beyond me. Just one more thing we messed up with the English language 😔
Doesn't bother me which sport you're referring to, as soon as I hear 'football' I completely lose interest.
If I were going to have any football boots though, I'd certainly be happy with those ones.
He's gotta be fined for that right? NFL has pretty strict uniform code too.
@speedracer216 Would that not be if he was being paid to wear the boots? I can guarantee you Nintendo aren't paying him. Nintendo don't spend money on advertising.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Truer words have never been spoken.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
doesn't matter either way actually. getting paid means you can't even wear it in post-game interviews or something crazy.
but I just realized, he can probably wear them because they are "pink" and it's breast cancer awareness month for the NFL so he's bending it a bit
Cool to see my tweet in a NL article😁, I'll forgive the typo of Coffee instead of Coffey for my name 😜
Am I the only one who can see a "Warhammer" advertisement in the background on this site? Is it a virus?
Too bad Beckham is a dirty player
@speedracer216 Yes many Giants players were wearing pink socks and shoes, I doubt the NFL fine brigade noticed Kirby.
@Equinox You obviously haven't seen his hair.
No mention of the 15 yard penalty after the play for removing his helmet? If Flacco had 1 receiver anyone could name that could have been a huge mistake. 15 penalties, Ravens lost more than the Giants won, it was a horrible game to watch.
@Equinox
I think they were worn for breast cancer awareness month. It is October and Kirby is pink.
@PanurgeJr They're both football. There's regular football, and there's European football.
@Equinox Today was actually breast cancer awareness day in the NFL, so most players were wearing pink gloves and cleats.
Boots?
@rjejr Mike Wallace was a big name back when he was with the Steelers, still not bad. And Steve Smith Sr. is very well known, granted he was out today. I wasn't upset though, as my name probably reflects, I quite like the Giants.
Where can I get a pair?
Or a pair of Zelda Nike shoes?
This just in: Man wears shoes!!
@rjejr
As a giants fan who didn't watch the game I watched dolpins actually play and packers stink it up .. I was suprised the giants won against the ravens but hey both teams are a shell of their former selves. Personally I love Eli and appreciate everything he has done for us but the giants need to stop patching and start rebuilding again...
@Nygiantz17
Mike should have stayed in Pittsburgh. He like many receivers couldn't succeed in the dysfunctional environment that is the Miami dolphins 😒🤔👍🏼🙃🙂
@LegendOfPokemon It's called football because it evolved from what the rest of the world calls football. It basically started out as just soccer, but then evolved into a more rugby style game (which is actually technically called rugby football), and the name "football" followed it throughout its evolution since the two sports it evolved from both had football in their names.
Reminds me of that time a football player did a Donkey Kong Punch.
@arrmixer Packers looked like brown stinkies today. Aaron Rodgers fumbled it once (on the Cowboy's two yard-line!!) and threw a pick. Eddie Lacy had a hurting ankle and didn't play more than 10-15 snaps. We haven't looked this bad since last year's game against the broncos.
Go Bills!
As I live in Canada I mainly watch CFL ( the Riders are on a four-game streak) , but of course I've heard of Odelle. I wish I had cleats like them.
I'm a Kirby fan, although I've never actually owned a Kirby game (I play as him often in smash). Just thought I'd say it.
@rjejr The NFL has uniform inspectors for every team, of course they'll notice the shoes. Pretty sure he'll be getting fined, awesome shoes though.
Haha that's hilarious. XD
Also, the source's name is Tony Coffey, not 'Coffee'
.. that copy ability really comes in handy..
Cool!
@LegendOfPokemon All such games (including "rocheberie" and Australia's "footy") evolved separately from a common game called "football". It's a fascinating history, really: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_football
@SniffitisWhiffit Then I highly recommend to you Kirby's Dream Collection for Wii, if you can find it! If not, Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure, and Kirby Super Star are all must-downloads (honourable mention: Kirby 64).
@SniffitisWhiffit You owe it to yourself to play some Kirby games! Really, just about any Kirby game would suffice, because they're mostly all great. If you have a 3DS, the most recent Kirby game, Planet Robobot, was nigh-immeasurably awesome, in my humble opinion.
@happylittlepigs No profanity, thanks.
@PanurgeJr I don't care but it's not really an argument. One involves using feet on balls, one doesn't.
Reading the title and looking at that picture I really thought "Sweet, David Beckham has a daughter and she plays football as her dad..."
@happylittlepigs
Yeah rogers was late on key plays which was rare
@SniffitisWhiffit
Is your season almost over?
@The__Goomba Clearly it's coffee, like the drink but not spelled the same #thegreenmile
@PorllM To be fair Rugby Union, which American Football grew out of, has teams which call themselves Rugby Football Clubs (English and European champions Saracens are actually called Saracens F.C.) and the RFU stands for the Rugby Football Union. Rugby of course developed out of Association Football and all three do involve a certain amount of foot to ball contact.
Well, i don't like Football or Soccer at all but the Power of Kirby is De-De-De-Definetely working.
Boys wear COD stuff. MEN wear Kirby.
@ningeek185 Kirby steals the powers of other creatures and murders all manner of critters. Seems appropriate.
I call him by his other moniker, ODB, for its Wu-Tang Clan vibe. He's not a dirty player; he's the most gifted receiver since Jerry Rice. And he rocked yesterday. Thanks to NL, I now know his performance was inspired by Kirby!
Nice, two of my favorite "characters" come together in one package
@speedracer216
Can't wear pink cleats in any other month the October. Rodger Goodell is so stupid. So, most likely. He also fined players who wore Red, White, and Blue cleats on 9/11.
@ningeek185 Wow! Another Bills fan? On here! Cool!
@Equinox I gave you a like because hey, it's true.
@AcesHigh You betcha! We're off 4 straight wins going into a welcoming matchup against Miami...should be an easy win. McCoy's on fire and Tyrod has been playing smart, and there's a good chance Lawson will be ready to go Sunday. Like what I'm seeing so far!
@ningeek185 Let's go Buffalo!
@arrmixer
Yeah, it usually goes to mid-November ( that's when the Grey Cup is).
@-DEMISE-
Have a 3DS? I couldn't live without it! Anyways, I am thinking about getting triple deluxe as it looks pretty fun, and has good reviews.
@Gauchorino
Sorry for my ignorance, but I can't remember if Kirby 64 was a side-scroller ( I think it was) like Yoshi's Story?
@SH007ME
Yeah, Boyee!
@SniffitisWhiffit I like Triple Deluxe. Personally, though, I think Planet Robobot is a bit better. It just strikes me as more creative and fun.
@SniffitisWhiffit You are right. It has 3D graphics that you might think are better than Yoshi's Story's. Lots of fun things to do in it, and it has very pleasant music and fun gameplay. It even has 4-player games for you and your friends!
Even so, I'd recommend to you Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby Adventure, and Kirby Super Star over Kirby 64 (and even over the later and recent games of the Kirby series, which are mostly all awesome, too), because those 3 are easier and more well-balanced than it, and they still have awesome music and even better gameplay!
@PorllM American football does require someone's foot to be on the ball at certain points during a game, just like in rugby (which is also football). That shouldn't disqualify it from being legitimately called "football", especially since both it and association football were both codified (differently) from the same game known as "football" for centuries to the English. That source game allowed indefinite holding of the ball, among so many other elements (most of which have been toned down in both association football and in American football).
Note that Australia, not the US, was the place of origin for the term "soccer" for association football (though it was originally just a terse moniker), as so many similar games were also known as "football". The reason for that is because Americans and Brits were still both playing the "source football" by the 1860s, but while the English made official rules to tone down injuries from the game (banning all usage of hands save for the goalie's) which began the "Associations", Americans obviously weren't subject to those rules and modified the source game differently throughout the years. Australia and other lands of English diaspora did the same to the source game as they saw fit, to a certain extent.
