Add yet another fun looking indie game which is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year. Causal Bit Games' Battle Princess Madelyn is a game that follows the journey of a young knight in training, Madelyn, and her ghostly pet dog, Fritzy. They set out on a journey to save her kingdom and her family from the clutches of an evil wizard.
Set in the vein of classic Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, the classic and familiar gameplay will transport old-school gamers back to their heyday, and the self-adjusting difficulty will allow for even the most novice of gamer to pick up and play.
Join Madelyn as she battles through graveyards, swamps, castles, the countryside and more. We are assured that polished gameplay, breath taking visuals, jaw-dropping dual soundtracks and epic adventures await.
The orchestrated audio in the game is by none other than John McCarthy of Nintendo Quest fame and a true retro style FM/PCM arcade style soundtrack by the legendary Gryzor87. We have to say it's all looking pretty good, let us know what you think of the trailer above with a cheeky comment.

Looks good to me!
@16bitdave Agreed. I'd love a bit of G&G style action.
Ghouls n' Ghosts action is always welcome in my book.
I really wanted a NES mini to play Ghost n Goblins
This could be a nice cheap alternative
I can't wait to play this. I'm ready!
I want this to be on the 3DS as well. This looks awesome!
Looks great.
I really enjoyed Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, so i can't wait to get my Hands on this.
Cool.
Can't really watch the video but does the main character lose their armour when hit? Just wondering how close the gameplay actually is to Ghouls 'n Ghosts
I'm in.
I'm definitely interested in this one!
"This time, the princess is the hero"
This line sticks out to me, it shows that games have been using the dasmel in distress plot for so long that one princess finally had enough of it, wanting to actually do something about the situation instead. Respect.
And Kills Her Dog. She better destroy them.
This looks nice.
This looks great! Always down for more Ghouls N Ghosts action.
I'm interested. Looks like a lot of fun actually...
Certainly looks like a Ghouls'n'Ghosts homage - even the jump animation looks familiar. Yay for more female leads in adventure fiction - I've been a sucker for those since childhood.
Well, I'm sold.
Looks surprisingly great.
Loving the look of it.
This looks so fun
GnG is one of my favorite series, so count me in to support a love letter to it!
@Marios-love-child: Cheap alternative? You need to buy the Switch... and than this game.
I played an early build, it is very impressive indeed. If you like what you see, make sure you check out their previous game "Insanity Blade". https://youtu.be/2XYJMz8Lq50
Looks dope day one purchase for me but really would love Capcom too do an updated Ghouls n Ghosts tho.
@Ernest_The_Crab - there are shots where she doesn't have her helmet on (and slightly less "bulky" armour in general), so I guess that's the substitute.
Anyway, I really like the G&G games, so anything in that style is good news to me.
Wasn't ghouls and ghost just insanely hard? Or was I insanely poor at playing it ? Been a while ....
@opeter
I'm buying a switch regardless though, I wasn't planning to buy a switch just for this but ghosts n goblins was the only reason I wanted a nes mini
Nice 👍🏼 I'm interested especially for on the go action.
@Marios-love-child: Ah, OK, now I understand
"Yes, girls can be knights too!"
Even with modern firearms, women overwhelmingly don't choose to be soldiers on the battlefield. Imagine that with melee combat with a huge sword.
Also, princes as well as princesses obviously never really battled, since they owned political power and were too precious to actually fight.
This to me is exactly what indies are great for. You don't need a graphical powerhouse. I have never played G&G, I have seen it played, I was too young to be allowed to play( my older cousin wouldn't let me touch his Nintendo at the tender age of 3). Officially on my radar.
Nostalgia sake, does anyone remember a game where you fed a blob jelly beans? I seem to remember my cuz playing it but maybe it's a child's dream.
@KIRO Ghouls n Ghosts is very hard but not too crazy. The original, Ghosts n Goblins is significantly harder and has the reputation for insane difficulty.
Looks alright, but I don't buy feminist games.
What, "Warrior Princess" was taken?
...oh wait.
@Steel76 I get what you're saying. A lot of "retro" pixel-art games have looked gimmicky, lazy or lacking in some way. But that's the same with 3d, there's good and bad. Even some significant 3d games have looked terrible to me. I like good pixel art, so I'm not sick of it, but I accept that I have to do my homework and be skeptical when I see it.
It makes me lol when a new game is announced for switch,everybody says I like it and will probably buy it. Well all I can say is I am in the wrong job cause I can't afford to buy all the games coming out. You guys must be earning top money
Looks extremely fun, hopefully I can afford it after all the games I will buy haha
Looks great... Another must purchase for my switch
@Marios-love-child Cheaper to buy a Switch?! Are the NES minis going for so much?!!
@SeriousSam HA. Man if you were serious about that I'd feel so bad for you
@NintySnesMan the games probably like, ten bucks. The average american male with 4 years college makes $23 an hour.
@ga3tr0n I've seen the NES minis going for 220. I bought my switch for 261 i think?
yep, i talked to him about releasing his first game insanitys blade on wii u a long time ago but he was unable to do it. battle princess madelyn is a game character based off his daughter of the same name and their pet dog as a sidekick that passed away in real life, named fritzy. he told his daughter that fritzy will live on through this game. she wanted him to make a game like ghouls n ghosts and alas.
as always
droppin knowledge son.
heres fritzy as a ghost:
@ogo79 a friend who never had dogs remembers playing blaster master years ago, and thought it was ridiculous and dumb that the character risks his life and fights aliens to rescue his pet frog. Then he met me, who he said "would likely tackle a bear if it ever threatened either of your dogs".
He's not wrong...
@russellohh
haha
@russellohh Dang! I think you went for the right machine. Have fun! I'm waiting to see if I can play all my digital 3DS games on the Switch before I even think about picking one up.
@PurinPuff Kind of hoping that would be the plot of Breath of the Wild. I guess we'll just have to wait for the next Zelda installment...
#shiek
@ga3tr0n
May I refer you to my 2nd post (comment number 30 in this article) for clarity
@SeriousSam are you being fecking serious, Sam?
@sdelfin ah! Yes that was it - I tried to play it on the old Commodore 64 and it totally destroyed me and I was more hardcore in those days too thanks for reminding me !
looks pretty rad!
The Ghostbuster (2016) trolls are going to HATE this game. Flame on!
Will definitely be picking this up. I was particularly digging the soundtrack.
Looks absolutely awesome, worthy of being called a G&G sequel. Well done!
This actually looks pretty good. I'm definitely getting a Shovel Knight quality kind of vibe out of it which is rare for the "pretending to be a retro game" indie genre.
I'm of mixed feelings though of a game that's going far out of its way to clone an existing retro game (some of the scenes are just attempts to directly copy iconic scenes from GnG.) That's unoriginal when compared to the Shovel Knight masterpiece that aped nothing from any existing retro game, yet managed to feel like an actual retro game that you just haven't played yet.
Still, I don't often pay much attention to indie games, but this looks kind of fun!
@NEStalgia The reason it looks so closely to GNG aside of that being my art style is because my daughter wanted to be in GnG. That's how this whole thing started! This game is for her first and foremost. The monsters are even roughly designed by her too!
So please - don't write us off as a clone We're very far from it!
@damainman69 I always appreciate when developers give a little behind-the-scenes on here. I thought it looked more like Wonder Boy with animations pulled from G&G, but either works and it's neat that you got your daughter involved in the process. If the price was low enough, I'd buy it just for that FM soundtrack.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE This IS coming to Wii U too, funny how the writer omitted that information...
@KIRO Ghouls n' Ghosts is just the kind of game that you have to play again and again and persevere at to be able to play it well. When you know where chests with armours and weapons are and which weapon to use in which stage, it's not nearly as hard as people make it out to be. But you won't know those things the first few times you go in, it comes with experience. The real offending aspect has always been that you have to play the game twice over to see the true ending... in one sitting cause of course there were no saves or passwords... oh and limited continues of course (though if you're smart you'll collect bags of gold to keep that number of continues high).
Bottom line, it's true that it's down to skills a lot, but knowledge from previous attempts also plays a huge role, so patience is also a much required quality to see it through (especially when going for the true ending).
@damainman69 Haha, that's pretty neat, and it's fantastic to see the devs in the community like this. Probably worth buying for that alone!
And glad to hear it's not actively going for the clone thing. A lot of indies fall into that trap where "homage" becomes "I didn't have my own creative idea so I just expanded on something I like", and a lot of fans actually really like that, particularly when it's a long abandoned series or a retro favorite like this. If that's not where this game goes (hard to tell in the trailer alone) then it looks great!
"It made me think of Shovel Knight" is certainly high enough praise in this business
@ogo79 It is because of stuff like this that I love indie games
@NEStalgia I can't wait to share one of the bosses my daughter came up with. Honestly it was almost something out of a Super Mario game. She was five at the time. She was at her friends house for the afternoon. Came home with a bunch of her drawings and some scribbled words. "Daddy I want this giant "X" in the game. And you can't just hit him. You have to make "X" fall down so it turns around and you hit him in the bum!" I just stopped dead in my tracks. I'm like.. I don't think I've seen that done in a game before. "Maddi, did you come up with that on your own?" "Yes!" "Ok then..." I can won't give it away but I'll share the art she does for it later down the road. It's soooo not a typical GnG style boss battle which is fine by me as I've always found those bosses too easy. I think the Skeleton boss in level 1 will be as GnG as it gets. Though I don't think they every moved around that much.
But there should be at least 4-5 gng games worth of content by the time we're done if not more
@Billsama
are you the same person that put that exact comment on his youtube a long time ago?
Another indie game that looks better than Nintendo's initial offerings on Switch. I'll be watching this one.
running through ghouls n ghosts for genesis and super ghouls n ghosts for snes masterfully, will give me a reason to master this as well.
someone call chris butter because hes on a roll
👍
@ogo79 Supergrafx GNG was the one we were playing over and over. I find the genesis one to be too easy. Also it's missing so much art and animation... enemies shrunk down etc. Supergrafx - play it on an emulator or play the arcade version!
I've had a few people tell me our game looks too easy. I'm the one playing the prototype in the video though. Advantage -> level and control designs. Extra Advantage -> have finished GnG a probably over 1000 times...
Cute. Reminds me a lot of Super Ghouls n Ghosts in terms of the visual style. If the price is right and it reviews well, I might pick it up.
@damainman69
lol yeah.
i have the arcade version on ps2 capcom collection.
the main difference between the genny and arcade versions is having to stand up and turn to crouch where is the genesis version is done by sliding the d pad left to right.
id say the genesis version is pretty easy myself.
i feel the same towards the snes version unless were talking about the real final boss...
what do you think of maldita castilla/cursed castilla ex?
and hey add a boss with a pumpkin head, green tentacle arms and white sheets on!
@Shiryu
Wasn't this supposed to come out on Wii U???
@ogo79 I love Maldita Castilla!! LOTS!!! <3 <3 <3
@WhiteTrashGuy It is coming out on Wii U too.
@damainman69 Haha, that sounds really great! Unique bosses are a rare beast. Always have been! I've never been a boss battle fan, I like the meat and potatoes of games best, but at least if they can make me smile, it's worth it.
For me the Super GnG boss that I still remember and utterly hate was that first stage one with the waves crashing down and eroding the ground platform. I forget was it a big plant? But the somewhat too-rigid controls just made me curse that thing again and again The bosses were always bland in those games though, I agree. They felt like nothing special beyond an annoying middle finger after successfully finding everything in the rest of the level
Oh baby, this game looks really good! I hope there's a way to turn off the bloom and crt filters though.
Hot damn!! That's one ANGRY princess!! I would be too if a baddy killed my dog!! This is on my list for sure!!
Been following this one for some time now, i said to a friend just yesterday it would make a fantastic Switch game and here it is. day one purchase for me, it should be a physical.
@Rumncoke25
That game was called A Boy And His Blob and has been remade and remastered a few times now, most recently on PS4 i think
Yes.
@WhiteTrashGuy Yes it was but the producers got burned out from working on it and decided to move to Pricess instead.
@SeriousSam It's not a feminist game - it's being made for and with my daughter (she's 6 years old). No agenda, just a dad.
Doesn't look bad!
@damainman69 That's good to hear, to be fair I wasn't 100% sure it was a feminist game, which is why I just spoke generally about not buying feminist games, in case you would read my comment and then clarify the situation.
@damainman69
nice taste in games.
@SeriousSam Funny how it can get confusing when it's about someone doing something for an actual person rather than a cause. This is why sweeping generalizations about groups are useless and even harmful.
It's probably beneficial to consider that "causes" and "movements" are full of people actually trying to do something for an actual person.
@damainman69 Looks great. Love the team size you have. Would be a dream to be successful making games like that. Curious if you are all working full-time on games only or if one or more of you have other jobs.
@aaronsullivan If sweeping generalisations can be harmful imagine if it was an entire movement not just making them, but engaging in political activism based on them. A movement that successfully pushed for a drug that was deemed unsafe to be made available because the company that made it was able to so easily and cynically manipulate them - a drug that was potentially harmful to the very people they were supposedly trying to protect and benefit. And that's just one example I could give of how they harm, or risk harming, their own group.
And if they would risk potentially harming their own group like that imagine how much harm they might do to another group that they have essentially set themselves up in opposition to, who are already worse off, if not much worse off, by almost every metric.
I guarantee I know a lot more about your side of the equation than you do about the other side of it, so I suggest you actually educate yourself and look at things holistically rather than perpetuate the same old tired arguments some of us have already heard ad nauseum.
I'd recommend you look up Cassie Jaye especially since she considered herself a feminist until she actually took the time to look at things holistically when she was making The Red Pill movie, as feminists should do from the outset, but never do. Once she took the time to educate herself about what the likes of Karen Straughan had to say she slowly, but surely started moving away from the label of feminist, and now she can be quite out spoken in her criticism of feminism, talking about the toxicity she used to bring to her relationship with her boyfriend due to viewing the world through the feminist lens. And that's just one of the many things she has to say about feminism.
And she never even spoke to feminist academic Christina Hoff Sommers, an outspoken critic of modern third wave feminism that offers an even more valuable insight to those who are actually willing to listen to what she has to say.
@SeriousSam My side of the equation? What do you think you know about me? Pretty funny.
My suggestion was to not make sweeping generalizations (something you gave evidence you act on earlier in the thread, suggesting this game was "feminist") and you immediately pigeon holed me into a category and put me on one side of an equation (as if there are only two) and guarantee me that you know more than me about the other side.
I don't pretend to know much about you but you seemed to make a 180 once you saw the creator of the game's reasoning. Thus, my comment about noting what happens when you put real people's experiences in the mix.
Everything I said aligns with your suggestions to "actually educate" myself. I don't align with the feminist movement and find many activist groups, movements and political parties to be increasingly creating little echo chambers of intentionally limited information that build anger and spite against opposing groups.
My appeal was to not size up things and make judgements based on limited information. It was meant to be general and not targeted only at you but, yikes, when it came to me you went and skipped the "actually educating" yourself bit.
Anyway, cool presenting some sources on the issue you are perceiving here. Maybe we'll learn more about each other in the future.
