Play: Mario Kart 7 With Nintendo Life - Choose Your Rules

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

It's baaaaaaaack!!!

There was a time, in early 2013, when team NL had a conversation that went like this...

"Right, time for another Mario Kart 7 community night, right?"

"Maybe we should see if any Wii U games have online community features."

"Erm, Call of Duty?"

"Nah, let's look into it."

Well, we've been 'looking into it' — which means forgetting to do just that — for a long time, but with Mario Kart 8 still being a thing we can only dream about until later in the Spring (presumably), we've decided that the old-faithful Mario Kart 7 will still do a job quite nicely. As such we're inviting you all to a thoroughly informal and fun mess-about in the awesome kart-racer, this Friday (24th January) at 9pm UK time, 10pm Central European, 4pm Eastern US, 3pm Central US and 1pm Pacific US. You'll hopefully be there, and a selection of NL staffers (including the bearded, happy Mii of this writer) will be around to be crushed by some awesome skillz; it could go on for a few hours, so bring some snacks.

There will be a Battle room but, in past experiences, it's not used much. It's all about the racing, it seems, so we'd like you to choose the rules for the 150cc community that we use this time around. Your choices are below, so click your favourite button.

Choose Your MK7 Grand Prix Community Room (160 votes)

NLife All Items

NL Goes Bananas (Bananas only)

NL Bob-ombs Away (Bombs only)

Please login to vote in this poll.

We'll take the winning result shortly before the racing begins and publish a fresh article with the Community numbers; we'll then see you on the track.

Consider this the beginning of our warm-up for (hopefully) similar community shenanigans in MK8 and other future games. Will you be on the starting grid?

I may play along. I'm not sure what community to vote for, they would all be really fun.

I'm going to try and make this one, I should be home from work by the start time. Might have to dust off my MK7... a little too much AC4 and Project X Zone lately, haven't played Kart in months.

Double Dash is till the king. But MK7 is great. I'm off to GEEK2014 in Margate next month to take part in the MK snes championships. Better get some practice in on the old grey box.

Ah boo, I'd join in but the time's really not good at all for me at all here in China.

@PrincessEevee9 Blasphamy, I love the Wii version too but there is nothing wrong with 7. The only thing I never really liked about 7 is that your kart parts really play into it, so I can't use the kart that I want and instead have to try to build the best kart...but in Wii you need to use the Hot Rod or Mach Bike to be at the top of your game, so what'cha going to do.

I get off of work Friday at 5PM but may try to squeeze this in earlier. I do plan on attending! Excited for this!

Too bad I don't have Mario Kart 7. I will definitely buy it sometime in the future, though, after the novelty of Mario Kart 8 wears off.

I may join sometime after the starting hour (at that time I am still at work), but I would be hopelessly defeated as I haven't played the game in months either, and I was never good to begin with.

Gioku said:

I think I maybe will participate this time.
I was just going on at at the Pokémon Championships about how'd I'd love a MK7 championship; this is close enough!

Count me in! I just have to go and buy a copy. Question: how does it all work? Do we have to post friend codes or something?

ThomasBW84 said:

@shifty2604 When you go into the Online Multiplayer mode you select "Communities", and then search for the relevant ones by inputting a code (which we'll post in an article on the day). You then join the community and race, that's it!

I'll be there!
(I better start practicing, I haven't played in a very long time >_<.)

Tasuki said:

Well I will be at work for the start of this but I only work till 4:30 PST so I might pop in after that time at some point.

unrandomsam said:

Dunno why anybody would go for anything other than only banana skins.

(Close as you can get to making it so its a worthwhile competition.)

Shade_Koopa said:

Nice, get to do some more racing on Mario Kart 7. Count me in! ^^

As for a good online game for the Wii U, why not Sonic & Sega All Star Transformed?

Great, it's gonna be all items
Oh well, at least we live in a country where we have the right to decide which kind of Mario Kart race we have. Democracy

Jazzer94 said:

I'm in but first I need to practice haven't played on a regular basis since going past 10000vr in march 2012.

Gioku said:

@ThomasBW84 how long do you think it will go for? I'll still be in school at 1PM PST, but I get off at 2:10 (and am usually home by 2:30), and I'd really like to participate!

ThomasBW84 said:

@Gioku The communities will be open all the time, so I'm sure some will still be on the tracks when you get home

@Shade_Koopa I don't have it (though I meant to get it a few times), does it have an equivalent community-style feature. It's setting up an area that everyone can access easily is the challenge.

@Mikky - I will try... if not it might be a video. Me and a few guys regularly do a game night.. last time it was Halo.. this time its my turn to choose - so it'll be Mario kart, wonderful 101 etc..

PrincessEevee9 said:

@PinkSpider Yes because I like having a rushed game with a reduced roster with none of the mechanics that made Wii shine. And a gamebreaking track that required a patch to make. Not to mention lack luster tracks and dumbed down AI.

FYI "casual" gamers don't exist are you one of those stupid people who also believe in girl/male gamers? Saddening...

I've got Friday off so I'll be there! This will be my first time really taking advantage of MK7's online community features.
