It's Nintendo Versus Sega, Anime Style

Epic console wars of the '90s retold in animation
Japanese anime has tackled a wide range of topics over the years. From the price of fame to the effects of the bombing of Japan in World War II, the medium has been put to stunning use by animators in the Far East.
However, there's plenty of oddball stuff around, too - like Aoi Sekai no Chuushin. This new production is set in the mythical land of Consume, where two kingdoms are battling it out for supremacy. On one side there's the dominant Ninterudo Empire, and on the other there's the resurgent Segua Kingdom.
Unless you're totally clueless, you should notice that this is a thinly-veiled attempt to retell the console wars of the '90s, when the Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive (AKA: Genesis) fought for the attention and cash of millions worldwide. All of the characters featured in the series are based on Nintendo and Sega franchises. Check out the full list below (as translated by Nintendo Gamer):

Opul – Opa-Opa (Fantasy Zone)
Neru – Nei (Phantasy Star)
Tejilof – Tetris (apparently a third-party mercenary hired by Segua)

Fare – Fire Emblem
Masa – Mother
Saroid – Samus (Metroid)
Pirika – Pikachu (Pokémon)

@jackaroo Don't forget that in Japan, Sega was very much the underdog during the 16-bit era. In fact, the Mega Drive was in third place behind the SNES and PC Engine in that region. It was in the west where Sega really took the fight to Nintendo.

Wow. That actually sounds fairly interesting. Kind of reminds me of that anime/manga I'd seen where the characters are based on the countries involved in WWII. Though I don't actually watch anime, this one has certainly caught my attention.

This is actually a fantastic idea for an anime show. Im guessing Gia could be the main character for the Segua Kingdom. I think they should add more characters for the Segua Kingdom as Ninterudo has more. We might see more characters in the coming episodes

I'm not a big fan of anime either, only really got into a few (.hack; the something scrolls; suikoden film... the vampire princess...) but this looks really really kool! I could get into this but we all know the end... Nintendo wins!

The first Fire Emblem game was released back in 1990, but Japan kept all their Fire Emblems to themselves until FE7, which saw a US release in 2003.
