Renegade Kid's much-anticipated platformer comes to the 3DS eShop alongside some quality DSiWare releases. Let's jump in and see what's available today.
3DS Download Software
Mutant Mudds (Renegade Kid, $8.99) — This cutesy 2D platformer is a bit of a belter, netting a 9/10 in our Mutant Mudds review. Don't be put off by the comparatively high price: this is quality download gaming.
3DS Demo
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games Demo (SEGA, free) — All being well you should be able to download a free trial of Mario and Sonic's sporting endeavour at 9am Pacific time/12pm Eastern time today.
DSiWare
Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish (Engine Software, 500pts) — Speaking of quality downloads, here's the sequel to DSiWare favourite Flipper, fresh from its appearance in Europe. An intense one-button experience, our Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish review has all you need to know.
Lola's Alphabet Train (BeiZ, 200pts) — Speaking of quality downloads... If ever you've wanted to learn your ABCs from a talking train, your prayers have just been answered. Rest assured we'll be putting full steam to bring you a review soon.
WiiWare
Newton Vs The Horde (RadiationBurn, 500pts) — No, not a biographical piece about the time Nintendo Life editor James Newton gave Super Mario 64 DS 7/10, this is a physics-based game about inflicting as much pain as possible. For 500 Points it could be worth a look, so we'll crack on with our review.

its a good week! i'll be getting mutant mudds. now que the people whining about no VC...
now que the people whining about no VC...
And they'd be right to do so.
Cant wait for the review for Newton VS the Horde.
Where's my Prince of Persia?
VC is back my good eye.
At least Mutant muds is almost an Nes game but dang this stinks.
I have just only recently forgave him...
How long has it been since we got a VC game? More over, how long has it been since we got one worth getting? I'll probably get the demo and maybe pick up MM later on.
Mutant Mudds and the demo for me! To bad i'll be a couple of coins shy from getting Flipper too.
Who cares about VC when you have a demo a great 2D platformer and a good dsiware game?
I saw the "Europe" tag and then looked up slightly and saw mutant mudds, then I looked even further up and became disappointed. Darn.
Edit: haha, you appear to have noticed it too just as I posted my comment.
Another week not to add anymore funds to my Wii shop
If that game were about James Newton, we'd never have to complain about the VC again!
Mutant Mudds is a must get (when I get the funds - next week). But, I still don't get why Nintendo can't release a VC game as well??? (Especially when Prince of Persia has already been released elsewhere this year.)
Nice week! I'll definitely be picking up Mudds and the demo will also be very nice. Still on the fence about Flipper 2 though....I wish it were 200 instead of 500. At 200 I'd get it for sure...
As usual no vc wii game... a vc game would be nice... it is nice to see another 3ds demo ... Maybe these demos might change my mind of saleing or trading my 3ds...
Booooor-ring!!! ;/ No Virtual Console releases? ;/
Even if there were a Virtual Console release, I'm sure that the people complaining about lack of Virtual Console would find reason to complain, probably about game choice, or about lack of a 3DSware release or what have you. I've found those people will never be satisfied and will complain about everything, completely ignoring anything good in the weekly Nintendo downloads. Best to shrug them off. More fun to the rest of us.
Mudds is brilliant. Been playing it for two days now and working like a dog to 100% it. It starts off pretty fun but easy...and that changes really fast, especially for completionists.
Yeah, it's expensive, but the price is justified by the quality. This is one of the most refined platformers I've played, in terms of control and overall enjoyability.
...aaand I'm reviewing Newton vs The Horde, and laughing my butt off at James' perfect joke about it above.
Huh. I was going to whine about people whining about no VC releases, until I realized that meant there are scores of cool old games that NOA could be making available but hasn't been. Think of all the treasures and old favorites we've been missing. Now I'm sad
Wait! Mutant Mudds! Sadness over!
Just a suggestion but you guys should start including a block count when you review downloadable games. I want to know if my 8gb sd card for my 3DS is still enough!
This update made me realize something; I'm not so much worried about rebuying VC games on Wii U as I am of having to go through the pain of waiting for each of my favorites to again be released. It's my hope that they've been holding back releases because they're working of making sure every game handles the transition without any issues, so we can have all the games we have now, on day one, preferably without having to rebuy them again. Otherwise, I just give up on this nonsense. I always thought a retro game service was a good idea, because it'd be kind of like iTunes for games, but Nintendos slow release schedule is frustrating to the point where it's hard to enjoy the games that have made it over.
Nothing for me today.
Newton VS The Horde looks better than the average wiiware game.
My 7 yr. old is going to LOVE yelling at DK. My wife listening to him, not so much.
Since somebody who works here has already stated they won't be reviewing 3DS demos I'll post about what it contains and how long it lasts later.
LOLA'S ALPHABET TRAIN??!??!/1 Doods, I don't even /care/ about no VC... we're sitting on a goldmine!
$9 is a rip for mutant mudds but looks fun, Save your money people for a better and cheaper 3dsware game
Mario and Sonic at the London Olympic Games? Come on Nintendo, you could do better with a different demo.
No VC game again, what a shock. Aside from that, I don't even know what to say about how bad this week's update is other than it's even more pathetic than what MS and Sony offered and that's saying quite a bit. NoA sucks at this.
Thanks koops3.
Even if you don't like Newton Vs The Horde I hope people will at least appreciate that it's different, and you can always call me names here if you get frustrated with it.
Have all the whiners actually played all of the VC games currently available? I doubt it. Why don't you just download one you don't have instead of moaning like a bunch of babies?
I can't speak for others but I probably have well over 40 or 50 VC games. The ones I'm not interested in, I avoid. But that's not even the point. The point is, if you have a service, support it and support it well. Nintendo has not done that.
Every week there is going to be someone complaining about something. It's best just to ignore them. I can't wait to try Mario and Sonic, and I might download Flipper 2.
Newton Vs The Horde
A game about beating up James
Must download now!
i am definately excited about mudds; just can't afford it til next wednesday. but i will definately get it then.
{waits until February to see if Kid Icarus comes out}
@Ryno I vote both. Mostly those whining about the complainers. I don't understand why the universal language of the Internet is comments that people thought about for half a second before posting them, punctuated with insults. Why so harsh? Why not think a second from more than one angle? Though some of the complainers might want to realize this weeks line up isn't too bad. Mutant Mudds!
@Chicken: he stole that joke from me, actually. glad to see it brought to the public instead of languishing in admin e-mail hell, though! :3
as for today's update... gah, why must it pour every time it rains? mudds and flipper 2, there goes all my points (and my spare time) D: D: D:
"I can't speak for others but I probably have well over 40 or 50 VC games. The ones I'm not interested in, I avoid. But that's not even the point. The point is, if you have a service, support it and give me the games I want. Nintendo has not done that."
Sorry, but that's what it sounds like you're saying. I say they're doing a good job of supporting the eShop, considering we've seen good quality games in the past few months.
I'm excited to play Mutant Mudds and the Mario/Sonic Demo, I just wish that we would have also recieved Prince of Persha since other countries got it already.
@39
Nope, that's just you reading what you want to read. What I want for the VC is good, consistent service like we got early on. At least 1 or 2 games a week. There were plenty of weeks in the early days that there wasn't a game I wanted but they were constantly putting games out there and I knew sooner or later there would be something I would want. It needs to go back to that. There is absolutely no reason not to have at least 2 VC games a month. But apparently that's asking for too much.
This demo is my first time ever playing a Sonic and Mario Olympic game. I really do not like it. I'll pass on this game. I will be getting Mutant Mudds though.
@Gamer83: Licensing issues and unwilling publishers are two reasons I can think of
Keep in mind the VC service almost guarantees no profit considering the games need to be rated by the ESRB and they're cheap. There's also no telling how much of the profit publishers get.
Oh, and for the record, I don't want to read people's comments who complain for the sake of complaining.
Guys, I don't want to repeat this, but buy Mutant Mudds now if you love platformers, this is the ultimate love note. Also, I am disappointed that Newton Vs. the Horde doesn't feature James battling the undead army
I'll try the demo. Shame on no Wii VC, but oh well. I'll take a look @ Newton, & Mudds later this week. Maybe even later today.
James needs to learn flash programming, so he can make a game about himself. Every NLife staff member needs to.
Super Mario 64 DS was given a 7 out of 10?
There were people that complained about the VC the week we got Streets Of Rage 2, Blazing Lazers, and Donkey Kong Country 2 because they didn't get Yoshi Story of all things. Just let them complain.
Meanwhile, Mutant Mudds is the best thing on the e-shop so far.
Getting Mutant Mudds, and next week Samurai Samurai. The eShop sure is piling up with quality titles!
Maybe Mudds, definitely Flipper 2 and the M&S demo.
I honestly am still laughing @ the james joke. BTW how much hate mail did you recieve over that rating James? I say its about right without analogue.
This week's update is probably the best one ever thanks to that James Newton game. That and Mutant Mudds, of couse.
Wish I had money for Mudds. D:
I'm playing this right now... It's honestly an exceptionally well put together platformer.. It's fantastic. If you can afford it...buy it. If you can't...buy IT!
I'm curious to hear anyones thoughts about Newton vs. Hordes, it looks really fun at 500 pts. Great week here.
@47drift Well, that person you are describing is NOT me. When I get a nice VC release I am a happy camper! I love retro gaming, so I am very happy when those games are released. As for as most of the shovelware, not so much... Unless it's a great 3DSWare game (might just have to give Mutant Mudds a shot, still uncertain, though. I just bought WWWWW and don't need another game to play at the 'mo.)
May get Mutant Mudds some day, being a 2D platformer. But, there are other things I want first, like Pushmo that I have yet to get. The failure to release a Wii VC game when Europe just got one, and the decline in 3DS VC is ticking me off... Guess it's just as well, no more rupees than I have at present.
Lola FTW!
