I get the feeling Capcom isn't giving these new retro collections Nintendo releases because sales of the first Mega Man Legacy Collection on 3DS weren't what they'd hoped for. But surely they realize that low sales were probably due to all 6 games already being on 3DS VC? I adore Mega Man games, but didn't pick up Legacy Collection because I already had all the games in it on my 3DS. I'd love to be able to play the Disney Afternoon collection, or this new Mega Man collection, on my 3DS or Switch, as it would actually be, for the most part, games I can't play on those systems any other way.
I'm not sure this will appeal to the same market as the 2DS. I always saw the low price as the main appeal of the 2DS, and I don't think this device has hit a low enough price point to fit into that same "budget" category.
I assume they made it XL because the the 3DS XL's sell notably better than the smaller models, but I do wonder if a "New 2DS" with the same non-hinged form factor, but New 3DS processor, c-stick, and ZL/ZR, wouldn't have made more sense (especially if it could've been $100 or less).
@Menchi187 @Joeynator3000 For high-demand items like this, Gamestop has in-store stock that isn't visible online (so you have to go to a store to buy it). They did the same thing with a lot of their pre-order stock.
Huh, I thought this was already official (though I can't recall where I actually heard the name, as I've never read the Link to the Past manual). Nice to have confirmation, I guess.
"In other news, Nintendo president Kimishima was seen literally throwing money into a garbage can."
In all seriousness, though, I'm guessing this is to clear the way for VC on Switch (and possibly to free up resources to produce more Switch units). The NES Classic was likely just a short-term thing to get the average consumer thinking about Nintendo again, as part of the company's larger efforts to increase their brand awareness/popularity. I'd be willing to believe it wasn't originally even going to be produced for this long.
@Steven_the_2nd I'm feeling the same way. I understand why people use IndieGoGo for some things, but for projects like this (where they'll almost certainly need to hit their goal to be able to start mass production of these), it just feels like they're trying to leave the option open to take the money and run. It doesn't make any sense to me that you pay for a product even if it doesn't raise enough money to get made in the first place.
I've definitely noticed improvements to the Switch version, particularly in one area of the game where the framerate was always terrible. Now there's just occasional framedrops there, which is great.
Hm. This doesn't sound awful, but I was hoping for something a la Shovel Knight: a game with retro mechanics and aesthetics, but modern sensibilities that remove a lot of the needless frustration of the game(s) it's paying homage to. I'm sure, though, that many people will be perfectly pleased with a game that matches the original style in every way, for better or for worse. Maybe I expected too much.
Wonder if I should've just gotten a refund instead of changing my Kickstarter reward to the Switch version...
@getyourak That's fair, especially given the games Nintendo's announced so far. Everything (from Nintendo) seems console-focused, with handheld mode there as an extra. Hopefully down the line (maybe if Switch does well enough that Nintendo decides to stop production of the 3DS), we'll see more handheld-oriented games for the system.
@getyourak So... what do you think could be done to improve the controls, then? There's the option to turn off motion controls (it was even in the Testfire). Not sure what they could do beyond that to make it play better in handheld mode.
@getyourak I definitely find the Switch more comfortable to play than any model of the 3DS, though maybe that's because I have large hands. And I can understand how the headphone jack on top might be an annoyance, but wouldn't it be worse if it were on the bottom, since you wouldn't be able to access it in tabletop mode?
I'm also very curious what your issues are with Splatoon's controls. I thought the Testfire played great, just like the original game.
@MrGawain Only 3 of those games were out this soon after the Wii U's launch. Lego City Undercover was about 3 months after launch, and Pikmin 3 and W101 didn't come out for about 9 months.
@Anti-Matter This game is compatible with all 3DS models. You're probably getting it mixed up with Fire Emblem Warriors, which will be on Switch and New 3DS only.
What's the button combination that takes you back to the Home menu? Is there anything you can do if a game necessitates using that combination of buttons?
I've never had much of an interest in Tetris, but found out this weekend that that's because I'd never played it multiplayer before! I downloaded the Japanese demo and had an absolute blast with a group of friends. Went home and pre-ordered the NA retail release that night.
It's also been a great game to show off the Switch at work with. Me and a co-worker will play a couple quick rounds of Tetris on our lunch break, each with a Joy-con.
I'll definitely pick up Blaster Master Zero at some point. I'll also consider some of the Neo Geo games, once the patch for the sound/image quality is out.
@mowerdude All DLC will come to all versions of Shovel Knight. Specter of Torment is just launching on Switch first (all other platforms will get it sometime in April)
@Fandabidozi That would be awesome, though the original Ouendan and Ouendan 2 are already region-free, being DS games. I still play them on my (US) 3DS occasionally.
@Kiz3000 Pretty sure he's saying that it's mixed messaging because it was announced as a definite eventual feature, but this describes it as something that "may" happen in the future. They're being unclear as to whether it's definitely going to happen, or is just something they're considering.
I hadn't thought about this until seeing people here point it out, but not being able to access Wi-Fi that has a login screen (even if it just consists of a "Connect" button) is a real issue. You won't be able to connect to most public Wi-Fi hotspots.
@JLPick When the Gamecube couldn't handle a PS2 game, it was because of more limited disc space (on the smaller GCN discs), not the actual hardware (which was much more powerful than the PS2). The issue in this situation wouldn't be all the game data fitting onto a Switch cartridge, but rather the actual Switch hardware being able to run a more advanced version of the game. Multiple cartridges wouldn't help.
@daveh30 Oh, for sure; I wasn't disagreeing with you on that point (I'll be picking up a Pro Controller myself for similar reasons). I was just surprised that they wouldn't have the Comfort Grip available.
@Anti-Matter The Switch will not have the capability for a cellular data connection (it would have been in the tech specifications released recently). Plenty of devices without that still have an Airplane Mode; it just cuts off all wireless connections (e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). Turning off the 3DS' Wireless switch is the same thing as the Switch's Airplane Mode.
