Video game trademark renewals are always happening, and while they don't necessarily mean something is on the horizon, they do tend to create some excitement whenever it's a classic game or series we haven't heard about for some time.
The latest ones, as highlighted by Game Rant, are tied to iconic British developer Rare - owned by Microsoft. Interestingly though, they're more of a retro throwback - with the renewals of Blast Corps (originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997) and Viva Piñata, starting out on the Xbox 360 in 2006.
While the Viva Piñata series has been on Nintendo systems in the past (Pocket Paradise for the DS), the focus for us here on Nintendo Life is mostly on the action game Blast Corps. The IP hasn't been properly put to use for a very long time but did recently get some themed merchandise at the beginning of this year.
And after the release of Banjo-Kazooie for the Switch Online Expansion Pack service in January, many Switch fans are also hoping to see many other classic Rare games get a release on the service. At this point, we don't know what else is coming to the service, apart from Custom Robo 1 & 2 for Japan.
One rather odd scenario that played out towards the end of 2020 was a listing for Blast Corps and Banjo-Kazooie (for Wii U's Virtual Console) on Nintendo's official Japanese website. It was incredibly weird at the time, considering neither game had ever been released on Nintendo's digital services. Nintendo said it was a mistake and updated the page:
Another Rare rumour that's been circulating for some time now is about the legendary N64 shooter GoldenEye 007 potentially making a comeback following trademark updates, but it remains unclear what platforms the game would be released on.
Would you like to see the Blast Corps IP make a comeback? Would you like to see it released for Nintendo's Switch Online service one day? Comment below.

Let’s get these Rareware N64 classics on NSO. Come on Microsoft. Xbox players don’t care about these games, but they are still special to us old Nintendo fans.
I think we'll see Blast Corps on Switch this year...
It was a good game back in the day. I haven't played it in ages.
The game is on Rare Replay along with Viva Piñata so is probably just related to that.
They were at one point making a Blast Corps DS. But it got shelved
Oh wow I actually remember having this on N64... such a unique game, and would be a great addition to NSO.
@mereel I loved playing them on my Xbox same as I loved playing them on N64 🤷♂️
Microsoft is just trying to impress us.
My wife would flip out if a new Viva Pinata was announced.
blast corps is my fav n64 game.. would be a nice surprising addition to iso
I know I say this everytime something happens in regards to Rare but.....
Rare Replay on Switch?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
@Dringo do you have any source for that? I got interested, googled it and found no hint at this;
I do hope that its coming to NSO although I recetly felt like I'd like to have Perfect Dark there .
I really hope this come to NSO. One of my favourite all time games. Different to anything I've ever played and challenging. Was hard to fully complete, but will defo do again.
Gutted this game back in the day. Really good game. Nintendo need to bring Pilotwing to the service then i will sub a year.
I've always said this is one of those Rare games that would get me to sub for the expansion pack.
Hopefully this equates to something good for us Nintendo fans and it's not just something for the Xbox or updated copyrights.
I would love to see a brand new "modern" Blast Corp game to go along with a rerelease of the classic on NSO.....I think that's a stretch though.
A Blast Corps sequel with modern destruction and physics would be cool.
I'd be much more excited about a new Viva Pinata, personally. I loved the DS game.
@valcoholic I was shown it when doing a project for Rare. The handheld team was merged into the main business after that
@Ryo_Hazuki Nintendo did purchase Rare but then sold it to Microsoft
Everyone talks about Banjo Kazooie and Goldeneye but THIS is my favourite rare game, I played this to death and 100% completion back in the day, so good!
Viva Pinata but it's a mobile gacha game. 😧
Rare Replay on Switch sounds awesome. C'mon Xbox/Nintendo make it happen.
... Wun can only hope.
Blast Corps 2 (or a remake) let's freaking go!!!
Jet Force Gemini would be also be sick even if it has flaws that would be worsened by NSO's lack of button remapping.
