@ejf1984 u don't get it - it's a privilege to get those! They only play a couple of 30 years old games and u can charge them making ur Switch look like a Frankenstein in the process. Don't u get how cool this is?
The sarcasm part over, seriously 50 quid for a pair of wireless pads with built in battery is not that much. It's not a steal either and the fact they will NOT play nice with games outside the NES Online thing (I really wish Nintendo would come up with an actual name for the thing) is an obvious deal breaker, but I still think the price is not bad.
@Razzy yep, same here. My red one has an enormous drift and there is nothing that helps. At some point I'm gonna open it up and see what's up.
Nintendo having good controllers comes from people that never had any other systems I guess. I mean even the GameCube pads for all the praise they get felt like cheap toys. Not that they broke easily, but the plastics used, the wobbly buttons, they just felt like some Chinese toys. Their layout was great however. The N64 ones were a mistake - Nintendo thought at the time that humans have 3 hands. I'll give the NES/SNES pads a shout out for their D-pads, but even then the Playstation D-pad was superior from the get go and still is to this day the best D-pad around, which Sony is clearly aware of not having changed it for 25 years already.
@sanderev I don't think Nintendo makes especially good game controllers. I mean the JoyCons, for all their ingenuity, are crappy controllers at best when compared to the Xbox One or even PS4 ones. The Pro controller is much better, sure, but then again it costs 70-80€ which it really shouldn't.
Also in the case of those new Online NES gamepads - they work ONLY with NES games, which is incomprehensible to me and it makes the 60€ for a pair immediately an expensive option.
Yeah but why would u want them? Those ONLY work with NES games (according to Nintendo, possibly even only with their online NES thing). Just grab a pair of the 8bitdo ones, they look the part, work great and will actually work with games other than NES.
Nintendo likes to be awkward like that sometimes and I just can't find a reason someone would want those specific controllers other than it says Nintendo on the tin.
@sandman89 yeah I feel like the game is super cool, has great OST, great art style BUT... it's too freakin' long! Besides as I've said it's nice to have something linear from time to time. Knowing that you can't get lost for hours on end is comforting and u don't get the feeling of ur time being wasted. I still plan to finish Hollow Knight, but the Messenger took me by storm, just as Celeste did earlier this year.
I dropped out of Hollow Knight at the moment cause... The Messenger baby! This game has such a good pace and it scratches that retro itch like no other. Loving it so far. Hollow Knight is cool too but I got a little burnt out on the exploration/getting lost all the time. I'm finding that when ur time is limited a linear game is way more enjoyable than an open ended one.
@SBandy I thought so too, but having played it for more than an hour I think it's masterful! The backdrops are gorgeous! I'm still not a fan of the puppets but it's cool u can customize their look.
I'm glad people are sensible here and don't rush to pour the baby with the bath water. Scores are more useful than ever! Dozens of games come out every day. It is literally impossible to read all the reviews in their entirety and play games and live and do all the human things.
The problem with no score reviews is that they become useless for anyone other than someone willing to invest the time to read it from beginning to end. Eurogamer is a good example of this. When they had their scores I would regularly read reviews of games I was interested in and the score wasn't something low like a 5/10. Nowadays I don't even open a review there if it hasn't got the Recommended label, which basically means I read like 10% of their reviews. Polygon? Similar story - I don't even go there anymore, cause their reviews are useless.
See, review scores are a bit like laws - just because most of the people behave themselves without even looking at laws that enforce good behavior, doesn't mean we should get rid of said laws.
It is a real shame that it'll be coming sooooo late. I'm afraid the game will be off the radar by then and won't sell much and this will inevitably lead to the wrong conclusion that physical doesn't sell and is not worth the effort. I wonder what the pricing will be too. If it'll be 25€ or more then it's dead in the water in my opinion (the physical that is).
@Neon_Blues Having review scores is really useful. Rather than read every single review I can glance at the score and be good. With Odyssey for instance I saw a few scores above 8/10 and I was fine - I bought the game and didn't read the reviews cause I didn't want to have it spoiled in any way and wanted to have an uninfluenced opinion on it. Not having scores wouldn't solve any problem and would only create unnecessary inconvenience (see Eurogamer with their useless system)
@Neon_Blues "WE ASSIGN MORE IMPORTANCE, OR WEIGHT, TO SOME CRITICS AND PUBLICATIONS THAN OTHERS, BASED ON THEIR QUALITY AND OVERALL STATURE."
This is actually a good thing. Imagine a great game scoring very high everywhere except one no-name-no-reputation outlet giving it a very low score skewing the final Metascore. They have to account for that.
Not surprising to be honest. There is such a thing as Nintendo fanboys and Nintendo haters, I've never came across a Bethesda hater though. My point is there were instances where BotW was given a 7/10, while it is widely agreed to be an exceptional game ( DICE awards anyone?). Hence number 1 goes to a publisher that released a handful of shooters that year which people will forget about pretty quickly. Prey and Wolfenstein II are good games, but compared to BotW, Odyssey or MK8DX and Splatoon 2 it's not even a contest.
this game looks dope! and the soundtrack made by KidKoala specifically for this game? and all this for 17€?! this sets a good trend opposed to all the overpriced ports. hope the gameplay is solid, but from the looks of it it should be fine.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE how about nope to that? I' ve played the entirety of BotW, MK8D and now Splatoon 2 and the JoyCons are totally serviceable. And I'm not planning on buying the Pro Controller anytime soon. If anything I'd rather buy another pair of those little buggers to be able to couch-play x4.
@Wexter I didn't mention those just because they're far off, but you're right. I cannot wait for Metroid Prime 4 and still am salty about Metroid Prime 2 remake releasing on 3DS only, although I have the system at home as well.
@Grandpa_Pixel In my opinion Nintendo is so far killing it in 2017. Yes, one could say "Where's the VC?". But I feel like this isn't something they should prioritize. What they should and are doing is getting new games on the system in a quantity that will guarantee peoples interest in the system. VC is important but it's not important to the general public and is not a selling point to someone looking for a new console.
Zelda, Mario Kart, Splatoon 2 even Arms are games that are Nintendo's biggest strength at the moment. Add Mario Odyssey, Rabbits and a load of great indies (I'm still playing Thumper and it's fantastically challenging) and we've got a good base for a success. I hope with time they'll bring games like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and Super Mario Maker over cause those are real gems from what I've gathered and are overlooked just because of the failure Wii U was.
Also an obvious sign of changes is the simple fact Nintendo allowed for cross play in Minecraft which Sony, sitting on their high horse at the moment, didn't allow.
I used to be very sceptical towards Nintendo but as of late they really seem to be changing at a pace never experienced before (by their own standards that is).
You are absolutely right about Ubi - it seems it's one of the few big publishers who actually has feelings. As to Fifa on the Switch, I guess my gripe with it is that it's a nerfed version again. Why not call it something else entirely? As it is it's another one of those that people can point their fingers too and say "well, I'm getting Ps4 cause it at least has the REAL Fifa game". I mean make a Fifa Street or something, just don't imply yet again that this version is inferior (not running on frostbite etc.)
@Grandpa_Pixel I think they have a genuine chance especially early in Switche's life cycle. Look at Snake Pass - it currently sits on the top spot in weakly sales according to eShop listings. The upcoming Rabbit game has hype around it and it looks neat, but it's worth noticing that Ubisoft treated this game as a big deal not an afterthought like some company's do. I think Nintendo has problems with 3rd parties, but it's not all down to them. The guy speaking released a poopy port of a remake (not exactly something I would call original) on a console that didn't sell well in the first place and he complaints about the game not being a success.
Look at Bayonetta 2 - it sold 0.8m copies. Not a smashing hit, but still it's a substantial quantity. Considering it is a bit of a niche game it's decent enough. But this was a quality game.
I do agree though Nintendo should be promoting 3rd party games more, however I also feel this is changing as even indie games get the spotlight from Nintendo nowadays.
3DS is a good example that 3rd party can exist on a Nintendo system, but they have to persevere cause unlike on Xbox and Ps4 they have to make a name for themselves among the spoiled Nintendo fans.
I think the problem with 3rd party games on the Nintendo consoles is that they cannot compete with the games Nintendo themselves releases. 3rd party usually release crappy versions of the same game they released on other consoles and that with a 1-2 years of delay. For Christ sake make the effort and come up with something original or exceptional quality wise and it will sell no doubt. It's always like that - 3rd party are dipping their toes with some poopy, lackluster port (I'm looking at you EA) and then they complain it isn't selling. Of course it isn't as it has to go against the best of Nintendo's in-house stuff which is not a easy thing. Look at the 3DS, are 3rd party complaining about it? Not really. Do they come up with original games for it? Yes, it's usually the case.
Stop whinning and go actually make a good game for once.
@TheGameSquid I'm not worried about the Switch, I'm worried about Nintendo in general. They've just had the worst selling system in their history and I have been thru the Dreamcast death before and don't wanna witness it with another great japanese video game company again.
Look at it this way: at last Nintendo struck a long term deal with a silicon manufacturer (nVidia), which basically means it is very likely that when Switch 2 (or whatever) arrives it is gonna be backward compatible (this is so far the line nVidia is taking with the Tegra SoC's). The 3DS? Probably not gonna have a follow up. Do I want good games to be playable on the future systems? Yes. Will a game released on a 3DS have a life in 6 years time? Probably not, unless one has a 3DS system lying around. It is illogical and impractical to release a game like Metroid ONLY on the 3DS. Unless you like to rebuy the same games over and over again, cause knowing Nintendo in a few years time we'll get a 3DS VC. And everyone will be grateful for having the opportunity to spend their money on a game they already bought in the past just to replay it for nostalgia reasons.
But that's just my point of view. Please don't jump at me for having an opinion.
@TheGameSquid I mean I have both systems but at this point the 3DS looks just old (in a bad way). Its a great system for what it was, but it has to die at some point. And I just can't understand why wouldn't they release this game on both systems? Seriously, the Switch needs to be sucessfull. If it is not we might not see another Nintendo console EVER, so the stakes are high. And I know people would play the poo out of this on the Switch. Instead Nintendo chooses to support a system that is light years behind technology wise which BTW has such a rich library of great games that it just doesn't need anymore. The Switch on the other hand really needs those games, Nintendo cult franchises I mean.
Wwwwwhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy Nintendo?!!!!????!!!!! Why?! For f**k sake couldn't they do something proper for once? people are craving for Metroid games for years and then Nintendo comes and releases a remake on a 6(!) years old system. They always seem to do those half assed moves instead of going all out balls to the walls. Have mercy on us! Put the 3DS to sleep already and focus on the future.
I'm holding off with the Steam version because I know it's gonna come out on the Switch. This is the thing with the new Nintendo system - it spoiled me. I wanna have all of my games on the Switch. So yeah ,as soon as it arrives I'm gonna buy it and play the poop out of it.
I don't buy this argument for a second. I bought my copy in Media Markt for 55 euro. That's a retail release. If the argument i nthe article is true why is the pricing on Nintendo Shop a whopping 70 euro?! For a download version?! So a cartridge release is 15 euro cheaper and the cartridge prices are high? It doesn't stick. It's just Nintendo premium we pay here. Loving the game though.
@Rotgut thing is it isn't built in (as of launch). I'm sure they'll add it later I just don't think a web browser on a gaming machine is essential. I get your argument but I also think people should stop whining about Switch not being an iPad. I see this news all over the internet as if it really mattered that much. What should matter most in case of Nintendo is games and that the system runs without unnecessary slow downs and that it generally feels more like a gaming machine than a nibelsnarfing tablet (I do hope it is that way). That's what I love about my New 3DS XL - you can ignore all the rubbish, only games matter, no distractions. When I pick it up I know what I'll be doing with it.
So, I see what you're saying I just don't care for it's multimedia capabilities. Have plenty of this stuff lying around.
It's a non issue to be honest. Only masochists use console web browsers. I much rather have Nintendo focused on what is essential for a great gaming system than getting distracted by unnecessary additional functionality. I mean c'mon everybody has at least a couple of ways to browse the web, including mobile.
I'm all in on a clamshell successor to 3ds. I really like the idea of the Switch being portable but to be honest it is not portable in a true sense. I mean will it fit my pocket? will the screen be safe from scratching when I toss it into a bag? I love taking out my 3ds for a couple minutes session while waiting in a queue and just closing it and throwing into my bag when the wait is over. It's just so much more convenient than a tablet like device where the screen is prone to scratches and the analog sticks are prone to breaking while not in some kind of protective pouch.
Granted it would really have to be a budget option to even make sense bussiness wise. I think 150$ would be fine. Just leave the format of a 3DS make the screens a bit bigger and higher res, bump up the specs and there you go. Release the same games as on the Switch to minimise development cost, just with lower quality graphics etc. Hell those games could even be the same cartridge (Switch and the portable system game combined on one cartridge fully interchengable between the two consoles).
I mean not everyone want's to pony up 300$ for a gaming system. A poor man's Switch is fine with me.
I really hope it'll be something aking to OutRun. A nostalgic racer is always a good thing in my book. Let's hope all the gimmicks won't put the actual gameplay onto a sidetrack.
I can't believe after all those elaborate posts from a few informed people here (@Einherjar, @TheRealThanos to name a few) there are still people coming to say Nintendos explanation is BS.
Where do they get those peapolzzz from?!
I guess the old saying goes: " U can't win with stupid..."
I've played HD:Room 215 and I enjoyed it a lot. The art style and the mood is still something I cannot find elsewhere. I really hope the walking mechanic gets a refreshment cause it was a bit awkward. So YES, I would definitely like to see a western release.
I think the biggest problem is people not understanding the difference between a RE-RELEASE (re-written code of the game - like Outrun 3D and the Megaman Collection) and an EMULATION.
Simplyfying things a bit it goes like that: Outrun 3d runs it's code natively on 3DS meaning its virtually a 3DS game, not a Sega system game. If you were to put this game in an original Sega system it wouldn't recognize the code AT ALL! EMULATION is something completely different. You try to cheat the game into thinking it runs on the original system (SNES). It demands a lot of power to emulate an entire maschine with all it's specific intricacies and to do it perfectly is a very calculation heavy task. Virtual Console from Nintendo is exactly that! Hence it is CPU heavy. Hence the divide. Simple.
it is indeed very likely this is the case. original 3ds is rockin a dual core arm11 architecture. to put it into perspective its the same architecture used in the original iPhone and the original iPhone was dead slow. it's basically a 10 years old technology by now.
in fact when I first planned to buy a 3ds a few months ago I went with the regular 3ds xl and when I got home I couldn't bare how sluggish the overall performance was, went immediately back and exchanged it for the New model. the New is no speed demon, but the experience in general is way better.
Nintendo makes their handhelds severely underpowered, probably to sell at profit and to keep development cost down; it has additional benefit in longevity of the components as well (no heat issues etc.). I mean any midrange smartphone eats the New 3ds for breakfast. Anyway I don't think I've seen a smooth running SNES emulator on the original iPhone (or the 3gs iPhone for that matter). Keep in mind if you wanna charge people for nostalgia it has to run perfect, so you need some overhead and you don't wanna push the hardware to its limits probably.

That's why we should get the possibility of backup over usb, thank you very much. Ps4 has it, there's no reason why Switch shouldn't have it.

Re: Remake of Metroid II, Metroid: Samus Returns, Announced for 3DS at E3
Re: Remake of Metroid II, Metroid: Samus Returns, Announced for 3DS at E3
Wwwwwhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy Nintendo?!!!!????!!!!! Why?! For f**k sake couldn't they do something proper for once? people are craving for Metroid games for years and then Nintendo comes and releases a remake on a 6(!) years old system. They always seem to do those half assed moves instead of going all out balls to the walls. Have mercy on us! Put the 3DS to sleep already and focus on the future.
Re: Hollow Knight Is Rapidly Nearing a Switch Release
@sketchturner Ori was fantastic and this feels like similar vibes. Lets hope the port is great and good price too.
Re: Hollow Knight Is Rapidly Nearing a Switch Release
I'm holding off with the Steam version because I know it's gonna come out on the Switch. This is the thing with the new Nintendo system - it spoiled me. I wanna have all of my games on the Switch. So yeah ,as soon as it arrives I'm gonna buy it and play the poop out of it.
Re: Here's Why Nintendo Switch Games Cost More Than Those For Other Consoles
I don't buy this argument for a second. I bought my copy in Media Markt for 55 euro. That's a retail release. If the argument i nthe article is true why is the pricing on Nintendo Shop a whopping 70 euro?! For a download version?! So a cartridge release is 15 euro cheaper and the cartridge prices are high? It doesn't stick. It's just Nintendo premium we pay here. Loving the game though.
Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks A Web Browser Because It's A "Dedicated Video Game Platform"
@burninmylight public hot spots not the best for online gaming
Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks A Web Browser Because It's A "Dedicated Video Game Platform"
Feel free to disagree of course. CHeers
Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks A Web Browser Because It's A "Dedicated Video Game Platform"
It's a non issue to be honest. Only masochists use console web browsers. I much rather have Nintendo focused on what is essential for a great gaming system than getting distracted by unnecessary additional functionality. I mean c'mon everybody has at least a couple of ways to browse the web, including mobile.
Re: Tatsumi Kimishima Talks About a Potential 3DS Successor
Re: More Details Emerge on 80's Overdrive
I really hope it'll be something aking to OutRun. A nostalgic racer is always a good thing in my book. Let's hope all the gimmicks won't put the actual gameplay onto a sidetrack.
Re: My Nintendo Has Gone Live in Japan, Introduces Exclusive Content and a DS Download on 3DS
I really hope FLIPNOTE 3D gets realeased in Europe at f****g last! Oh, Nintendo loving you is rough...
Re: Here's Why SNES VC Games Can Only be Played on a New 3DS
I can't believe after all those elaborate posts from a few informed people here (@Einherjar, @TheRealThanos to name a few) there are still people coming to say Nintendos explanation is BS.
Where do they get those peapolzzz from?!
I guess the old saying goes: " U can't win with stupid..."
Re: Chase: Unsolved Cases Investigation Division - Distant Memories is Bringing Hardboiled Detective Work to 3DS
I've played HD:Room 215 and I enjoyed it a lot. The art style and the mood is still something I cannot find elsewhere. I really hope the walking mechanic gets a refreshment cause it was a bit awkward. So YES, I would definitely like to see a western release.
Re: Here's Why SNES VC Games Can Only be Played on a New 3DS
this thread is going for faaaaaar too long........
Re: Here's Why SNES VC Games Can Only be Played on a New 3DS
they should release the Flipnote 3D Studio in march for free for those that register to the new Nintendo loyalty program as far as I know
Re: Here's Why SNES VC Games Can Only be Played on a New 3DS
I think the biggest problem is people not understanding the difference between a RE-RELEASE (re-written code of the game - like Outrun 3D and the Megaman Collection) and an EMULATION.
Simplyfying things a bit it goes like that:
Outrun 3d runs it's code natively on 3DS meaning its virtually a 3DS game, not a Sega system game.
Simple.
Re: Here's Why SNES VC Games Can Only be Played on a New 3DS
it is indeed very likely this is the case. original 3ds is rockin a dual core arm11 architecture. to put it into perspective its the same architecture used in the original iPhone and the original iPhone was dead slow. it's basically a 10 years old technology by now.
in fact when I first planned to buy a 3ds a few months ago I went with the regular 3ds xl and when I got home I couldn't bare how sluggish the overall performance was, went immediately back and exchanged it for the New model. the New is no speed demon, but the experience in general is way better.
