Re: Review: Baldo: The Guardian Owls - Exquisite Ghibli-Esque Art Can't Hide Tortuous Gameplay

@harouhiko it's baffling that NL refuses to take another look to Baldo. It's my best game in 2022, I've played 70 hours to conclusion and another 8 hours in the free DLC.

Bafling... Listen to your community NL, the game was updated, improved, and expanded. Your peers (SwitchUP) have revised their grade.

It's a gem of a game, one that anyone who likes Zelda games should play. But if people go to NL, they see it's a 4/10 game!!!

this makes your website as a whole difficult to believe for other grades.

Take another look. If you still hate the game, then so be it. But you need to react to the updated version.

@twztid13 I agree, they should revisit the game and give it a new grade and say what works now...

the issue is that NL is stubborn as a goat and won't admit they reached a conclusion too fast. So the impression of the game is bad, due to one bug in Savoca prison which prevented progress at launch. Apparently, that was a death sentence for an otherwise excellent game.

Guys the game is great and has been fixed long ago with improvements to the mechanics, it’s a difficult game (and not because of design errors) in that it doesn’t give you obvious cues on how to solve the many puzzles that exist. The original review by PJ Oh-really was in my view pretty short sighted. Anyway I’ve played through the original story and will enjoy the new adventure. Let’s have an open mind about that one.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

It cannot be the Switch guys, yes that’s the console we are playing and enjoying at the moment. But did it have a game changing impact on the world of video games? No, it’s all ports ports ports ports, it’s severely underpowered and cannot run the best game of the moment (Elden Ring it makes me ohhh soooo mad). It’s probably on top 3 but not first. I put NES as this was the moment when video games was reborn into peoples home and away from Arcades. It was a ton of fun and had millions of original game changing games. SNES is second because it was better than the NES but did not change the landscape as much as the NES and GB.

I'm playing this game now on Switch and for the life of me cannot understand how this game gets a 9/10. Are we playing the same game? I find it boring, confusing what I should be doing next and laggy controls make fighting difficult. //edit: also it's pretty dull graphically, everything is so greenish. I should like it, I'm green you would say, but not with video games!!! And you give Baldo a 4. I'm signing out of NL.

Ok after a few patches to the games let me provide my unbiased (ok I love the game lol) corrections to the listed 'Con's' of the game as listed near the score:

Core gameplay is excruciating on almost every level

it's a very vague statement and should never have been there in the first place, but as this is subjective, I can tell you that no, it's not excruciating anymore thanks to a lot of improvements to the gameplac

Awful map, clunky UI

  • maps are great now, Clunki UI yes...

Combat is far too tough and even basic traversal will see you die countless times

  • Yes that's fixed, the game was made easy for all you gamers who have trouble with tough games. I liked it a little bit hard, but if that's what the masses want, easy games...

Obtuse solutions to puzzles and dungeons make progress insanely difficult without help from external sources

as mentioned in the third comment, this is actually a game's plus. Agreed sometimes the solution to a puzzle are far away from where you are and require to remember you saw 'four statues facing that way, so place them in a similar pattern here'. Sometimes it will strike you as obvious and sometimes it won't, in this case, just ask the community will help you.

Still lots of bugs to be found, even after the latest patch

no more bugs

In 2022 a DLC or additional content seem in the work. I demand the gaming community to get a grip and forgive the game it's early bugs and see the game with an open mind

45 hours into Baldo almost at the end of Dungeon 4 (Maluna Abandonned Royal Mansion) collected the Bomb Owl finally which apparently opens up a lot of places in the game. Patch 1 has now been released which brings a lot of quality of life improvements such as faster walking while holding jars, vastly improved map system, better difficulty management (those spiders no longer can kill you from the ceiling) etc.... another 40 hours to go and I am already sad when it will be over. I tried Metroid demo: it’s a bit meh. Need to go back on Skywards Sword and Luigi Mansion. Oh and I’ve been promised to visit Super Nintendo World in Osaka for my birthday since I’m in japan so for that I’m super hyped!
