Bandai Namco - the Japanese company behind series like Tekken and Pac-Man - appears to have a new project in the works, contracted by Nintendo.
According to multiple job listings on Bandai Namco's Japanese website (via ResetEra), it's believed to be a remaster/remake of a '3D action game' by Nintendo. Bandai Namco is currently seeking planners to get the project up and running as well as visual artists to perform "HD remastering" of 3D backgrounds.
Here's a rough Google translation of one of these job descriptions:
"As a visual artist for a 3D action game project on a Nintendo contract, You will be required to perform HD remastering of the 3D background."
Bandai Namco has helped out Nintendo on all sorts of games in the past. One of the highlights of the Switch generation so far has been Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - featuring characters like Pac-Man and Kazuya.
What 3D action Nintendo game do you think Bandai Namco could be reviving? Leave a comment below.

Hmm not sure what it could be. But maybe something good hopefully?
Or it will be some title, I never heard of.
There were Metroid Prime remastered rumors right? Maybe this could be it
I’d have to think it’s Metroid Prime or maybe even Ocarina of Time. But I hope it’s Kid Icarus Uprising.
Maybe yet another version of Star Fox 64? There aren't many other series by Nintendo that could be categorized as straight action.
@Kyloctopus I would think MP remastered? Also didn't Ocarina of Time get a remake on 3DS though?
Kid Icarus does need a comeback though.
But maybe its Pokken 2? Or something Pokemon related
I know there's no reason to expect Kid Icarus, but maaaaaan.... if only it could be Kid Icarus
Finally, a remake of the DS gem 100 Classic Book Collection
I think it could be a Pokken 2 or something Pokemon related
That’s interesting, I’m curious to know what this could be. Star Fox comes to mind here.
I wish they give us a Baten Kaitos and Origins remaster
Geist remake let's gooooo.
Obviously would love a Metroid Prime remake, but if not, something like Kid Icarus or Star Fox would be sweet.
@StarPoint @Kyloctopus @anoyonmus
And this is especially coming off of their alleged development of Metroid Prime 4 prior to the restart.
Donkey Kong 64 and Kirby Air Ride come to mind.
Space Station Silicon Valley, there is no room for doubt in my mind
@ModdedInkling ohhhh you are right. I would not be surprised now!
Here's all plausible candidates I can think of, with a broad definition for "Nintendo 3D action game":
I doubt any games Rare created would be included, but I included Donkey Kong 64 anyway.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 seems unlikely, since upscaling it should be straightforward and they already did that in-house for SMG.
I realize how unlikely Metroid: Other M is but I included it for the lolz
While he isn't from an action game, I think we all want to see a certain giant return...
Starfox Assault seems a reasonable guess, what with them developing the original.
3d action game...huh. Hm...can't really think of anything.
Edit: Scratch what I said. Now I finally remember! Custom Robo for GameCube. I believe that's a 3d action game. I'd nearly forgotten...
@Deltarogue Doshin the Giant? That the name, right?
So what you're saying is that we're getting a Star Fox Assault remake. I'm down, that game is great!
@DanijoEX DOSHIN IS LOVE, DOSHIN IS LIFE!!!
@Deltarogue It just popped in my mind. Like "POOF!". Haha.
It's obviously Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the Forgotten Land.
In all seriousness, my guess would be Star Fox Assault or either Baten Kaitos.
Zelda seems quite plausible here. I know that we've already had the 3DS versions of OOT and MM, but it's not entirely unlike Nintendo to remake the same game multiple times, especially when it's that big of a game. Plus, it would give them the opportunity to fix people's problems with Majora's Mask 3D. As for the details in the listings, given the fact that OOT was a very early 3DS game, there's a good chance that Nintendo might not have ever made the OOT 3D textures in HD/Models at current poly count standards, so if Bamco was working on it, they'd probably have to remake them, hence the mention of remastering 3D backgrounds.
Then there's the real wacky scenarios. People are bring up Star Fox games in here, so I raise something better: F-Zero GX. Knowing Nintendo, I wouldn't be surprised if they had the listing be purposely misleading just to throw people off their plans. The only problem could be that Sega was the original developer, but Sega doesn't seem like it would have any problem with this happening, given their history.
I know it's supposedly a Nintendo made game but I would love to see them port over the Gamecube version of Tales of Symphonia to the Switch.
@ModdedInkling good point. This could be something Metroid related for all we know.
But a remaster of the first MP game wouldn't take long right?
They’re finally remastering ARMS for the Switch 🥳
Some very loose definitions of action games in the comments here 😛
@ModdedInkling "Hey your version of Prime 4 sucks so hard we're restarting it with Retro Studios, but we totally trust you to remake the Prime Trilogy".
Yeeaaaaahh, not quite sure Metroid Prime is what they're working on.
Hoping for Kid Icarus but we'll see I guess.
But Pac-Man Adventure 3 when...?
Nice weather. What conspiracies are we cooking on the menu today?
Now's your chance to give us the Xenosaga Trilogy Namco.
Some of the previously DS only Tales games? (I did quite like Hearts R's Vita remake)
Also, Skies of Arcadia. I just want that remade asap with quality of life improvements.
Finally, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe Edition.
Maybe Soul Caliber II? That one had Link in it.
Star Fox Assault remade with robust online multiplayer would be freaking great. Just don't forget split-screen.
Other M HD so Sakamoto can tell us how much of Dread comes from Other M and how we can look forward to Untitled Sequel to Metroid Dread AKA Metroid Another M.
Bandai has a strong relationship with Sakurai, so I think there is a strong possibility of a Kid Icarus Uprising HD remaster. The game would translate well on the Switch with gyro controls. It's an incredibly meaty title for a handheld game, and I believe Nintendo did say other 3DS titles could be ported back when Miitopia was released. I wouldn't rule it out.
Miyamoto has had enough of Namco's crap and is taking it upon himself to remaster the Pac-Man World trilogy like the brave little soldier he is. Godspeed, Miyamoto-san. 😭Godspeed.
...But no, Kid Icarus would be pretty cool, too.
Could literally be anything! All the more exciting to see what happens in the next year or two.
Please be starfox 🙏
Star Fox Assault would be my first guess as Namco worked on it.
I'm not holding my breath but KI Uprising would be nice.
@Bobb Ok, I know you're joking but I would play the hell out of that
@liljmoore This is at the very top of my wishlist. I love Xenoblade, but I don't know if Monolith Soft will ever be able to top Baten Kaitos.
If it’s just Metroid Prime but not the trilogy I’d be quite gutted to be honest.
Pac-Man world 1+2
Metroid this, Metroid that. 🙄 SCREW THAT! I want a Pac n Roll remaster!
It is Wario World
It is Startropics definitely. Action game it is and it's old. It needs a remaster !
Love seeing all the Star Fox Assault comments, that would be amazing. Kid Icarus Uprising would be a great choice too
Bandai Namco HR: Konichiwa thank you for your time and coming to the interview. So how many years of development do you have?
Applicant: 10 years
BNHR: Great, so we have this IP, Elden Ring…
Applicant: hahahahahahahahha …. (Slams the door)
remake of Kid Icarus Uprising for the Switch sucessor?
@JJtheTexan "Here's all plausible candidates"
Star Fox 64 but not Star Fox Zero? That makes absolutely no sense at all... so knowing Nintendo, you're probably right!!
Seriously though, I feel like it is far, far more likely to be a Wii or Wii U Port than anything from the N64 or Gamecube era.
I just hope this isn't WW/TP after the BotW2 delay... not because I don't want it, but because I'd hope Nintendo already had that done!!
Starfox
... Adventures
3D Action game rules out things like F-Zero, Waverace, Air Ride, 1080 etc, those are sports and racing games. Also its for a remaster so I don't know why people are guessing Pokken 2, which would be a new game in the fighting genre. I'd love all of them but they don't seem to fit.
I expect it might be to do with the Prime trilogy? That seems most fitting. Though for me the ideal would be if they were doing a random remaster of a more obscure title like Doshin, Chibi Robo, Sin & Punishment or even a Switch port of Dillon or Ever Oasis.
Eternal Darkness remake. New insanity features will include drops in resolution, frame rate and joy con drift (which will lead to an influx of false law suits!)
It could be anything, and years away lol.
A home version of the Namco arcade Mario Kart?
@nocdaes the listing says “HD remastering of 3D background”. SF Zero (or any Wii U title) is already HD, so wouldn’t really need HD “remastering”.
Donkey Kong 64 HD
I'd guess it would most likely be Kid Icarus Uprising or Starfox Assault.
I'd like a pacman adventure game like PlayStation had. That was neat. I wouldn't be apposed to a kid Icarus uprising game either. But they would need to figure out the controls. I'm mostly interesd in the awesome online play it had and vast variety of weapons.
"3D action game" automatically excludes any fighting/racing/RPG/3D platforms games.
The only ones that came to my mind are: a Metroid Prime, a Star Fox game or Kid Icarus Uprising. Hope it is the latter one
.. Considering that a Metroid Prime Trilogy has been already rumored for quite some time (and by this time, it should be ready), and that Nintendo could easily remaster Star Fox Zero for Switch by itself.. the only one left is Kid Icarus.
Sakurai said, some time ago, that a port from 3DS to Switch could be quite demanding in terms of development resources, so it could be the only one game needing to be outsourced to a third-party developer for remastering in HD.
Bandai Namco is also hiring for level designers for this game, so this remaster/remake will have some form of new content not seen in the original.
Baten Kaitos collection or bust.
@anoyonmus
A remaster would not take long. The only reason games take so long to release is because Nintendo intentionally stretches out their releases.
@Bolt_Strike
Think of it like this way: Bandai Namco created a prototype of Metroid Prime 4 that seemed better suited for a remake of older games rather than something substantial for the series, so they moved BN over to remakes and gave the responsibility to Retro Studios.
Please be Battalion Wars, oh please, please, please.
STARFOX!! hey I can dream.
I bet, it's Kid Icarus Uprising. That game is too good not to come to the Switch, but the graphics could definitely use an upgrade on the system.
I think I didn't undertand that quite right.
1. Is Bandai Namco working on a remake of a Nintendo IP?
or
2. Is Bandai Namco working on a remake of their own IP on a exclusive Nintendo contract?
I don't think it is Kid Icarus/Metroid Prime, there's no reason Nintendo wouldn't ask Sora/Retro Studios for that.
Could be Starfox Assault.
If it's number 2, then it would be difficult to tell.
Klonoa, Katamari, Super Robot Wars, Galaga, Xevious, lots of older Namco arcades...
I also think that it will be Kid Icarus. What other 3D action adventures does Nintendo have that are worth remaking ? DK64 is a 3D collect-a-thon platformer, and Star Fox Assault is more of a shooter.
It could also be one of the older 3D Zelda titles. But that wouldn't be that exciting. Plus, I doubt it, since we are getting BotW2.
EDIT:
This is just wishful thinking, but I would like to see the original version of Dinosaur Planet from Rare, before it became a Star Fox game.
You mean Pac-Man 2 the adventures of pacman!!?
@RareFan Or a hybrid of the two
@JJtheTexan I mean DK is a Nintendo franchise so if they wanted to remaster DK64 there's not a thing that could stop em
@liljmoore I own both of those but I've never played them. Are they good?
My heart says: Pokken 2, please!!
My Brain says: Star Fox Assault, unfortunately
My hope says: Star Fox 64 remake, please!!
I admire all the creative ideas, but it's probably Dark Souls 2.
it could very well be the .hack collection consisting of .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine since those are considered 3d action Rpg's
plus it lines up with Bandai filing the trademark for Last Recollection in Europe and Japan.
If I remember correctly they registered Baten Kaitos for a trademark a couple years back. 🤔 Maybe that's wishful thinking though lol. Those games would fit right in on the Switch lineup, I'd love to see a twofer like they did with FF X and X-2 HD. I'd pay a ridiculous amount of money for an HD remaster, goofy voice acting and all lmao.
@daichi42 "I don't think it is Kid Icarus/Metroid Prime, there's no reason Nintendo wouldn't ask Sora/Retro Studios for that."
Absolutely there is, those devs are working on other new games. Grezzo didn't make the original versions of Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, or Link's Awakening, yet Nintendo put them in charge of those remakes, since they're just remakes.
What about Tales of Symphonia? They originally published it excusively on Nintendo. I know it is an RPG, but it is 3D and the battles are real time, where you can move the characters. I consider it an Action RPG.
@duffmmann Grezzo doesn't compare to BN, half of the games Grezzo developed are remakes/remasters, they practically live for that. Sora and Retro Studios are very close to Nintendo, closer than BN, if those games have an incoming remake, it is most certain they will be remade by them.
I'd love to see, specifically, Pac-Man World 2 Remastered.
@daichi42 doesn't matter how they compare lol, point is Nintendo will happily outsource remakes, they've done it before, don't see why it can't happen again at all.
Could it be Wario World?
Hopefully it’s Assault, but I’d rather have another Star Fox game like Assault except bigger.
I really wish they would remaster Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness that I played on the Dreamcast. I really loved that game.
Street Fighter V need a demastery to run on Switch, so i guess its not that.
I'd love to see SoulCalibur II get a remaster. It was my first game in the SoulCalibur series, and is my favorite. It's also my favorite fighting game series, other than Super Smash Bros. Obviously, Link is my main, although I also like to play as Cassandra, Sophitia, Taki, and Xianghua.
But some people have also said Star Fox: Assault. That's my favorite game in the Star Fox series, so I would love to see it happen. But it wouldn't be enough to just give it a fresh coat of paint. A lot more changes need to happen.
For one, they need to tighten up the on-foot and Landmaster controls, as they were very touchy in the original game; one wrong motion on the joystick, and you could tumble off a ledge.
Also, they should add more missions to the campaign (such as infiltrating the ruins of Andross's base on Venom to find the schematics for the weapon that they use to destroy the Aparoids, as well as missions that make use of the multiplayer-exclusive maps of Titania, Zoness, and the Great Fox, plus some originals, like Aquas and even the first appearance of Papetoon in a Star Fox game.
And speaking of multiplayer, make it online, where you can play with anyone (not just friends), and include other mutliplayer modes, such as battle royale. And also have up to eight players in a match.
Death by Degrees.
Nintendo wants money. It'll be Ocarina of Time. Guaranteed. Maybe followed by MM. Set for a 2024-2025 release date. Those games fly off the shelf, take a handfull of bills, hold em up, slap 'em down, your head's like a record going gong-ga-gong!
Wow! Just ducking wow! It better be PAC-Man World 2 remake. Or I’m going to strangle a child! Okay, maybe a bum. Then I’ll play with his blood. Then visit ur mum.
I dont really want to count platformers, racers, RPGs or sports as action games even if action is involved. I cant see them do Zelda or Metroid, especially Metroid if it was Prime 4. That leaves Kid Icarus or Star Fox. Namco did work on Assault so that would make sense if they took and improved that one
It could be Chibi-Robo if it's really considered an action but then again.... You always have Doshin 🌝
