For instance, maybe some words on how Risk of Rain 2 runs on the Switch? How was the port of Hotline Miami? — it certainly got enough press on release day with nary a word after. Torchlight 2 came out yesterday, how does that run? Invisigun is a game that has high marks on Steam and isn't available on other consoles, but what's it like on the Switch? It seems both familiar and unique. All this to say that an autorunner banking on the Bubsy name sounds like a 5 straight out the gate at best.
Although I appreciate as many reviews as we can get, I feel as though this is one that could have been left on the cutting room floor in lieu of something more promising, unique or interesting. The name "Bubsy" doesn't mean much in gaming circles, and the fact that this received review time and 500 or so words over something/anything else is underwhelming and disappointing to me as a reader.
More reviews for all of these games coming out currently, please. I see so many new games pop up on the shop and it's as though no one on the internet is expensing them for review.
I'm not worried about the console war — just the current war on my wallet and my game-buying sensibilities. More timely reviews, please.
and, I think finally, are the villagers all autogenerated and do that grow in random ways? Are your villagers all different and semi-unique from mine? Can they die?
I'm pretty new to Minecraft (lol I know) but I'd love to hear more about how DQB2 tops it in terms of replayability. That was surprising to read. Is the quest portion endless? Is there a way to randomly generate new worlds or do you have this one dedicated sandbox world to craft and explore? Or are we talking about replayability in a different sense?
@Fake-E-Lee : Love that update; thanks. I was musing last night about how I wanted to divert my time and was cruising around looking for new&shiny stuff to capture my attention. I didn't find anything and went back to chasing my dragon that is 2k19. Now I think I'll be hunting down sand for some sweet glass walls in a new inside-of-a-mountain house tonight.
The game came out about 10 months ago, and 2kTV is not strictly a commercial. And yes, it can be disabled. And last year's game had it. And people really lose their cool about NBA2k when it's an incredibly well-made and supported game.
I've put in more than 550 hours each on 2k18 and 2k19 for the Switch. Great games done well. The fps difference between Switch and XBONE/PS4 is noticeable but being able to play anywhere brings it up to par.
@Yosher Yep. There's a lot to like in this game and lots to do. I appreciate the accessibility the devs and producers provided. A more full-featured package than most. A game that provides yum for many different palates. And of course personal buy-in and cost does not equate to equal value across the video game spectrum.
@Yosher because I get to set up the matches and choose options. I get to make decisions about the character AI and how it's going to fight. I get to engage with the game rather than being a strictly passive observer on YouTube.
The loot economy isn't bad. I disliked looking up a cryptic online map for directions inside of MKX's krypt. So I like this one. Last night I patiently walked around the area limiting myself to chests under 2,500 coins. I earned a lot just by walking around. I still have 100,000 to dink around with. There's a lot to do in the game without unlocking things.
Here's my favorite part: THE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE YOU CAN PROGRAM... AND THEN WATCH. Listen, no matter how many fighting games I buy, no matter how many tutorials I play through, I never get the hang of fighting games. I LOVE the spectacle of fighting games, though. And now I can set up some light programming for an AI character and send them off into a variety of modes, including normal single player stuff. I get to watch them pull off moves and combos and have little dialogue interactions without having to mash and repeat the moves I can remember in the heat of things. Personally, it's awesome. YMMV. And they earn coins and stuff for me, too. I've already spent more time with it than most fighting games simply because of how it invites me to engage with it at whatever skill level I possess.
This is brutal. "Better Late Than Never." No doubt. Where have all the reviews on this site gone? This is a game that was originally released in 1997 yet we're treated to paragraph after paragraph of catch-up plot. Let's just jump into a review of the port, please. We're well aware of the ins and outs of FFVII by now.
I feel more and more in the dark about the quality of what games are coming out on the Switch as reviews begin to lag more and more and cover less and less ground. /r
@Fake-E-Lee I def appreciate the hitback on the old post! Thanks for the thought and for taking the time to put your experiences out there. Glad to hear you're enjoying the game — a poke is just what I need to dust it off this winter.
...I bought this last night and it's so much fun. I had a smile plastered on my face as the opening California tracks blistered through my eyes and the ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK rippled through my ears.
Screenshots don't do it justice. Toss it on your wishlist if it's not in the budget right now. This is a solid purchase.
FWIW, and I think I'm in good company, I really love the branching paths and merging/connected tracks in Out Run — I'm guessing this doesn't play out like that.
I didn't play the Lotus games. Are the key differences from Out Run that it's Podium Placement and not Time Trial based and it's only opposing racers on the track and there are no commuter vehicles? Thanks.
I picked up Sleepaway Camp based on the review here and really regretted the purchase. One of those things where in hindsight you're like, "What was I thinking?!" Jumping on here to warn anyone who's got the itch to pick this up to take a walk outside or something. I was incredibly underwhelmed by Sleepaway Camp b/c it's a one-trick pony. This seems like even a narrower passageway to squeeze the sliding tile concept through.
TL;DR: PASS
That said, there are still a lot of reviews for other, perhaps less derivative games, that I would like to see write-ups for.
@geox30 No doubt your observations are valid. Again, I didn't notice any issues with the frame rate, but I also wasn't looking for them. I also play pretty deliberately.
@BigKing It actually took too long, imo, for reviews of this game to hit. I expected them Day One last week (this is a release I've been anticipating), so having word come out almost a week later has been a surprise.
My biggest detraction has actually been that I'd hoped for a smaller file size.
Re: Frame Rate: Played through the game over the weekend. I'm not Digital Foundry but I didn't notice anything to remark on where the frame rate is concerned — it honestly never even entered into my mind. I also played through the game when it originally came out on the XBone.
It's a ton of sneaking and carefully considering your actions — really never felt like FPS was a concern. I had a ton of fun revisiting the game and will definitely tackle the NG+ b/c it's just one of those games that's fun to play.
I put in more than 550 hours with 2k18 on the Switch and never once paid for VC (used microtransactions). I played two franchise years, one year of MyGM, dabbled with untold numbers of fantasy drafts and seasons just to poke the box, adjusted sliders to my hearts content, dipped my toes into MyTeam (but didn't stick around), and never once spent money on VC. Again, more than 550 hours and never once paid money into the game. And this year's version is better optimized right out of the box. Hands down my favorite game to play on the Switch.
The game is great. It plays great and it looks great. It's fully featured and that's mind-blowing. I can't believe what they're pulling off on the Switch. Not everything uses VC (microtransactions) so really, you're mileage with that will vary, but it's no secret they exist in some modes (MyCareer, MyTeam), but the others — MyGM and the Franchise — don't use them. Again, it's really incredible and special to me that we're getting this game for a second year on the Switch. If you like hoops, if you like simulation sports gaming, legit this game is for you.
Chiming in to say I really like the art style. I like the little map zooms before you choose where to go, and from there the map loads immediately. I like the sprite art and all of the surrounding details.
I find all of it very attractive and it sparks my imagination, reminding me of playing with toys in the backyard.
Played last night. LOVED IT. Then I did something I considered SO HORRIFIC that I deleted my profile and started an entirely new reality/profile. CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY MORE. When this game came out on PC I was so disappointed it wasn't available for Mac OS. The surprise drop yesterday was super welcome during this challenging week. I wish I was playing it some more right now and setting up for a long day of gaming. Gotta TCB at work first!
There's so much I like about this game and I'm excited to poke the corners some more.
