This is one of my favorite games on the Switch. I continue to come back to this game moreso than anything else on my system. I'm not great at it, but a run here and there — now and then, is simply wonderful.
This is hugely exciting news for me. I've put in nearly 400 hours on the Switch version of 2k and being untethered from the TV is revolutionary. I have this full-on basketball simulation in my hands. Yes, the 60fps on the other home consoles makes for a much smoother game, but for my single-player fantasy/day dream needs what 2k provided us last year was not only a dream come true but it was more than I ever expected. I was prepared to continue playing 2k18 throughout the life of the Switch b/c I didn't think we'd get another run but HOLEE WOW I am thrilled. Game of the System for me. It keeps me happy. Thank you 2k.
@brutalpanda Thanks for the reply. I've still failed an early mission a couple of times near the end and it's really killing the game for me. The sameness is ok as long as I'm not literally doing the SAME mission over and over. *sigh.
Again, I love Nintendolife for the reviews it provides but a game that's been released twice before... the e-shop is jam-packed of smaller release games and games that haven't been reviewed by as many outlets. I'd love to see more attention and time given to those.
Is it OK to play Legends mode on Easy just to plow through it? This is my first time with the game and failing a mission near the end feels frustrating. I'd rather keep pushing forward, but as is so often with games, playing on Easy makes me concerned that I'm missing out on something/not getting the full experience. I'm more than open to jumping the difficulty in Adventure mode, etc., down the line.
I really appreciate NL reviews b/c there's a dearth of Switch e-shop reviews out in the wild, but with that said I can't believe there's much that needs to be said outside of any quality of life improvements that might have been made to a game like Ikaruga — which I own on a GameCube disc.
Again, I appreciate this site, but there are a lot of smaller and more obscure games on the e-shop that no one else is reviewing and I would love to see credence being given to those before something like Ikaruga.
As always, thank you for your work and dedication.
Noticed last night that this was the No. 1 seller on the North American e-shop. That got me very intrigued. Have to admit I'm a little confused by the reviews — it's landing a prrrrrrrretty solid 70 on console reviews (slightly better on Steam) but watching it run I have to say I think it looks phenomenal. I wonder what I'm missing. I enjoy rogue-likes (and lites) and REALLY have fun with "Enter the Gungeon," although like Spelunky, I'll maybe never get past the first couple of levels.
That said I'm leaning toward treating myself to this as a YES, this weekend. Curious about the funny looking mech game that's supposed to exclusively drop for the Switch today, too.
This is fun. It's also a little bit of a letdown that each run doesn't plant you on a new world to explore. It's always the same world, same general layout (at least in the beginning). I think this would play really well in the world of controller-passing couch play (my life, your life kinda thing). I have fun with it for a run or two every other day. There's a weightiness that's missing from the best scripted 'Vanias though.
Wish we could just get a Super Off-Road for the Switch. Revisiting what makes top-down party racing s much fun shouldn't be so mind-bendingly difficult in 2018.
How jump-in friendly is the multiplayer are are there options to tweak the rule-sets? I've got this on the wishlist b/c I'm looking for a Super Off-Road-style game eventually but on the fence atm as to if this is it.
I enjoyed it enough on the 3DS but didn't always come back to it.
I really want a fun and frantic four-player Smash-fighter on the Switch, but I'm not really flipped by the trailer for this one (and I'm not revved up by Brawlout, either). Looking forward to the duck-themed one for now but wouldn't mind a few more options. The Switch is so good for limited-button four-player quick games.
@Wolfgabe but if you have 600 and only want to spend 300 I don't think you can. Last night when I was messing around with it to pick up "Thimbleweed Park" it seemed like an all or nothing kind of proposition. I'm still a huge fan. But it's not as flexible yet as something like Amazon Points, etc, for example.
I've got $7 USD to spend AND IT FEELS GREAT! It's all from impulse buys and planned purchases. There's always something I've got my eye on and most of the time it's due to New-Shiny syndrome. It's gonna feel great to plunk down this $7+. Microsoft has some sort of rewards program but I don't think I ever really earned anything. Keep it up, Nintendo. I definitely appreciate it.
Multiple endings (not counting CYOA death endings, I mean)? What's the replay value like? Again, I understand the general idea of Choose Your Own Adventure books, but those involve a lot of page holding and going back to a previous choice, not so much firing it up again from the beginning.
without paying for the license I'm sure it would free up funds to actually advance the gameplay and other features. It might even allow the publisher to come out ahead on an every-other year cycle. TBH, gamers don't need too much arm twisting to buy an annual release if the product is good.
@NEStalgia If you gave gamers Madden or NBA2k but with a full suite of customization options and the ability to construct a league (number of games, frequency of games — be the commissioner as well as a GM/Owner, player, etc.) it'd be amazing. Players already create custom rosters to mirror certain anime. Sure, the license goes a long way toward recreating the NBA, obviously, but I can see the limitless fun in letting someone create the Midwest Great Lakes League — a 14 team, 30-something game season with 40 minute games — or anything. The possibilities, given a dependable simulation engine, are endless. And we have those engines!!
@NEStalgia No one's even tried to give gamers a fleshed out realistic sports sim. There was the pure physics based Backbreaker but it had a woeful season mode and no franchise mode. 2K released All-Pro Football but it had a limited roster, again a weak season mode and NO franchise mode. If you give gamers the tools to customize uniforms, players, stadiums, league rules, all these things — you don't need the license. Players LOVE sandboxes. But you need to provide the tools.
What's the Japanese Pro series? Maybe made by Konami? ... Professional Baseball Spirits. I think this looks great and I'd definitely get down into it. Companies underestimate the appeal that exists for gamers to manage a fictional league if the physics and simulation are done well. Gamers love management sims! Add in great gameplay and you'll sell copies. No need for a pro license although I'd learn about the overseas leagues — sure.
Picked it up this weekend and love it. It has a very XCOM vibe in the way you manage menus and troops and details, and then presents you with a whole new set of management opportunities when you're out on a mission. If you're an XCOM gamer, I highly recommend this as a scratcher of that particular itch.
@sfb haha now I'm daydreaming about Starbound but looking forward to exploring Terraria again. 2016 reviews have me wishing it was the other way around. Gimme dat sci-fi!
@sfb That's the one! I played Terraria on Xbox but never Starbound (for obvious reasons). Would love to see that come to Switch in place of Terraria simply for the freshness — understanding that these are different games from different publishers, natch — but maybe "T" is the superior game to "S"? Anyone got any hot takes on that?
Thanks for the mention of the color-blind mode. Big help and greatly appreciated inclusion (both to the game and the review) for folks who do struggle with colors.
Can anyone speak to how it does stat tracking? Does it use an initials system? Does it track PvP activity ala Melee (not Brawl)? This is make or break for me.
Thanks in advance! And thanks for the continuing top-notch service, NintendoLife staffers.
