Revealed as part of today's Nintendo Indie Highlights presentation, SteamWorld Quest has been officially confirmed for Nintendo Switch.
Developed by Image & Form - the studio behind SteamWorld Dig, SteamWorld Dig 2, and SteamWorld Heist - SteamWorld Quest is a brand new adventure in the much-loved universe from the previous games. Taking the series in a completely fresh direction, this game is a turn-based, roleplaying card game, where players must lead a party of aspiring heroes through the gorgeous hand-drawn world depicted in the new trailer above.
The focus here is on the game's card battle system and deck building - you'll be choosing from more than 100 unique 'punch-cards' to build a deck and take on whatever threat comes your way. SteamWorld Quest mixes the series' familiar steampunk robots with the traditional treasure chests, gold, dragons, magic, knights in shining armour, XP, and the like often seen in RPGs. Here's a selection of screenshots for you to admire.
Of course, back in December 2017, Image & Form actually asked fans which genre they'd like to see next from the series and RPG was the clear winner. It looks like your prayers have been answered.
A specific release date hasn't been confirmed - Image & Form tells us that this will be revealed soon - but we do know that the game will launch first on Nintendo Switch. This is the first game from Image & Form to be published under its new joint-venture label Thunderful.
Are you a huge SteamWorld fan? Are you excited to see this new take on the series? Let us know if you're thinking of picking this one up in the comments below.

Just as I was puttering about with a robot guy in HeroForge...
Wow, I've never been from overly excited to disinterested between the title and tagline.
SteamWorld Quest ==> YAY!
Card ==> Pass...
Nice job forgetting SteamWorld Tower Defence, guys.
This game will be amazing. Incredibly excited for it.
I don't see much wrong with the card system as long as its implemented well
Are card-based RPGs that common? Legit question, I've only ever known a couple like Baten Kaitos and Slay the Spire. Is it more of an indie thing?
I called it! Rpg baby!
It's bothering me that all the punch cards have the same dot pattern.
I can't say I'm excited about a RPG card game but then I don't think I've ever played one, perhaps I'd like them. Image & Form are quality so I trust this will be an excellent game in the genre. I will need to be sold on it though.
I'm not saying no but I will need some game play impressions. The only card battlers aside from the recent Paper Mario games that I liked were the Baten Kaitos games.
Super excited. Theyve combined 3 things I love: RPGs, card battlers, and SteamWorld.
Was excited till I read "card based" yeah not excited anymore.
I am very interested in this, I have been hankering for a card based rpg for awhile, combining that with the SteamWorld franchise seems like a guaranteed win to me!
Ive loved all the SteamWorld games til now but .... NNOOOO. I HATE turn based games .... the ONLY one I ever loved was SteamWorld Heist!! and this is nothing like SteamWorld Heist. The new art style doesn't exactly look like a SteamWorld game either. ... and ... cards.
Yeuch
The combat and card system look bland.
@Ralizah Sure, you've seen 5 seconds of a video and you've turned into the mighty video game reviewer.
Not a huge fan of RPG's but I am a big supporter of Steamworld Dig so I'll be giving this a shot.
Also, the title of this reminds me of a certain bad dude from The Smurfs...
Really digging the genre exploration with this franchise!
This is a game type I don't play much, but I trust Image & Form to make it interesting and wholesome.
Not really into the card system, but I like these guys and what they do. I know it´s going to finish being an awesome game, like all the previous ones.
I love hearthstone and mtg. I love the steamworld games. But mixed together, I just don’t know. I do know I’ll end up buying it because image and form make great games.
The story will make or break the game. Heist had an amazing story and I've replayed it way too many times. The card "system" will be a love or hate distraction before release, much like turned based robot shooter divided many before Heist was released, but Image & Form have done an amazing job with both Digs and Heist so I trust this will be well done, fun, and worth the price.
After those **** Paper Mario games (3DS and Wii U) I will never ever buy a Card based RPG game.
Well darn. "Card" games just aren't for me. "Deck building" is just so blah. Props to those happy about this announcement though. I'm sure the game will do well.
I'm confident that I&F will provide an excellent game... I'm just not interested in a card based RPG... but I hope it is great for those who are into it.
If I were going to try a card-based RPG, it would be one from I&F... I also didn't think Heist would be for me and I loved it on 3DS.
Thanks for the love, everyone!
@imageform
How much exploration and story will there be? The trailer seemed to show mostly just battles.
@Cosats I said it "looks bland," not "it is bland."
It doesn't usually take much footage of a game for me to get a sense of whether I'm likely to enjoy it or not. Once you have a sense of your own likes and dislikes, you'll probably be the same way.
And, by all means, don't let me lack of interest rain on your parade.
Auugh,... stop caring at "card game"
It also makes me appreciate the Art Style in Battle Chasers and Child of Light even more. This look/animation screams "Mobile Game"
Man, these guys really do whatever they want don't they? Looks absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to see what Image & Form does with that card system.
I’m excited for this, but really really hope this isn’t all they’ve been working on. If a new mainline Dig3 is being neglected for games like this, that would suck.
@Dezzy Plenty of it! It's a very large game with many places and characters to meet. Very story-focused
This is going to be awesome! I have been really getting into card based games. This is perfect for me.
@McDerbert It's our main project at the time but we've been listening to requests since forever. Stay tuned and in the meantime I hope you enjoy Quest!
I would have been more excited for this, but I cannot stand card mechanic rpg's. Card's are being thrown into too many games nowadays, not to say I don't enjoy some card based games, but I'm not a fan of that mixing with rpg's.
Oh man I was so excited it was an RPG but card based??? That’s a hard pass from me, uggggghh I’m so disappointed. 😢
Ooh! Card battles? Love it!
Hope this turns out something like the greatness that was Baten Kaitos.
@imageform I’m sure I’ll love Quest. I did like Heist but I just adore the Dig games. 2 was so good! Just left me wanting more and more of that world. I’m only disappointed that you guys working on one game at a time, means I have to wait for a new Dig. It’ll be worth the wait though.
Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes.
@imageform It has been a while since I got this excited for a game! Wow. I love you haha Now we are teased, about when can we expect it? Cuz I cant wait like a year. Cuz it has “2019” release =(
Like, summer, fall, winter? Q2 or?
The gameplay looks a lot like Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which is good
Wouldn’t have been my first choice of genre but both Dig games (especially 2) and Heist are quality games so I’m watching this with interest.
Gorgeous graphics too.
Hmm, I have never played a card rpg before. Lets see how this turns out. Steamworld dig 2 was great by the way, but this is of course totally different.
Shame it not an exclusive lol definitely getting it!
@mr12calvin We'll have more info on that soon. Also check - and perhaps subscribe to? - our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/imageform as well. We will post Engine Room videos frequently in the near future to explain about the game. We also answer many of your questions there. <3
Very good news! It seems so polished! Steamworld titles are great !
I'm hoping there's a demo for this one. I'm a sucker for RPGs, but when you combine that with deck-building....Eh, we'll see.
Looks awesome! Love card game RPGs. Well at least I loved Baten Kaitos. And have loved all other steamworld games. So really looking forward to this.
The artstyle looks great and I'm confident I&F will put out yet another quality title.
Ehhhhh it just seemed a bit too similar to Slay The Spire, far too soon after that got big.
EDIT: Actually StS just went 1.0 today. That's a weird coincidence.
I loved Dig 2. I played Heist for a bit, but it just got too repetitive. I mean not even the music changed during battles, it was the same track over and over.
This is my top pick of this indie video. Image and form has shown that you can stretch your legs a bit while still using a consistent theme. SUPER excited.
Looks interesting. Loved Steamworld Dig and still yet to play Steamworld Dig 2 and Steamworld Heist. With 4 games in the series out now, would love to see a boxed cartridge with all the games on it
Yet another reminder that I need to finish off the very end of Steamworld Dig 2. I fear that its been too long, and I may just need to start the game over from the beginning at this point. We'll see...
At first hearing card-based I thought something similar to Hearthstone but watching the trailer it reminds me more of the Baten Kaitos series turn-based combat, which I really enjoyed. Very excited to play the next Steamworld game, especially as it looks to reignite a gameplay style which isn’t actuallly too common.
I'm assuming this takes place before any of the other games in the timeline. Really wish there was an official timeline for these, even though we can pretty much piece together what happens.
This looks wonderful! I love that image and form are developing a game like this. I hope it has some kind of multiplayer, my wife and I love steamworld, so we will be fighting over who gets to play first if it doesn’t.
Also love the genre hopping. Like some here, never played or particularly felt compelled to play a card game but the developer has form so....I’ll wait for a video review.
I hope the overworld and non combat portions of the game aren’t straightforward and traditional in design as well.
I’m hoping for non combat designs to be similar to the Mario & Luigi RPG’s, Golden Sun, or even the latest South Park RPG’s.
I saw turned based RPG and got really excited but the card system is a real downer. From the comments, I am glad I am not alone there. Good some people are really excited and wish it the best.
Since it's an Image & Form game I'm surely gonna give it a try! The graphical design looks excellent as usual and I'm intrigued to see what more this game has in store for us story and gameplaywise. I guess that's what's important with a presentation like this
@imageform Couldn't see it in the presentation, so I want to ask if there will be characters we know from the previous SteamWorld games appearing in this quest?
I think this looks amazing and I don't have any issue with it being card-based. I like classical turn-based RPGs, but I also do like card-games and think Image and Form can hardly fail making this game great.
I must admit that I always liked, but never really got into the Dig-series (my boyfriend did though!). SteamWorld Heist was one of the greatest games on the 3DS-eshop for me. Loved the physics-based-turn-based-shooter-RPG it was going for. <3
Only disappointment to me was the vague "2019" release window. Suppose it will be rather autumn/winter then?
I love deck building based card games, I love turn based combat system and I really like Heist, so... I don't think I'm doing wrong buying this game.
Day 1 for me.
@icebear80 That's a really good question, and since we know that the answer isn't exactly "No", then: "No comments". Please don't ask any tricky follow-up questions on this please.
As long as One time Purchase IAP Free I am DOWN; LOVE THE ART STYLE
Big fan of all three steamworlds. Thank you imageform for visiting and answering questions. I have never tried a card based game before, but with the imageform name, it will be a day one purchase for me.
Wow, this is kind of random and unexpected! At first I was hyped about a new SteamWorld that's an RPG of all things....but then saw the card system.....and it's sadly probably not for me. Never been a fan of card based video games and kind of loathed the card game requirements in FFIX and Skylanders. I know in Japan, TCGs are a whole subsections of arcades, and probably the biggest money maker....but I never quite got hooked by it, either simulated or with collectable cards.
But then Hearthstone shows I'm the outlier.
I wish it were a SteamWorld for me, I hate to miss one, but I probably won't dip into this one......unless it's a temptingly good sale
Also, @imageform Dig2 was soooo good.....and ended sooooo abruptly.... I wasn't ready for it to be over! Don't tease me like that!
I'm down for this as Baten Kaitos is one my favorite games on the Gamecube though I'm usually not a fan of card games. Image & Form even mentioned Baten Kaitos so I'm assuming they are being inspired from it's system. Now will they release this in a physical form is the question.
@imageform Awesome you actually reply in Nintendolife’s comments! :3
Can’t wait! What is the price range we can expect? Im in debt rn but Id go further in debt just to buy this game hahaha Its not so bad though. Just saying I love your games soooo much.
