Meh. Playing through Subspace was alright. I'm not bummed or anything about it being gone, though. Sure, the fan fiction wrote itself and there were a few good stages, but there were many times I fell merely because of unfamiliarity with a character or a stage built more for the likes of Mario as opposed to Captain Falcon.
Also, it was a pain to unlock characters with Subspace. It took forever. That being said, I still want to have to unlock characters.
@Tritonus You're kidding, right? Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros. Brawl had online... Why wouldn't their successors?? Kid Icarus Uprising and Mario Kart 7 even have online. Don't be silly.
Maybe we'll see another 3DS. That picked up after a price drop and Mario Kart.
We're getting Shin Megami X Fire Emblem (Fire Emblem Awakening), Zelda U is on the horizon (Ocarina of Time 3D), and we're getting a decent hardcore title (Bayonetta 2 as compared to Resident Evil Revelations).
The Wii U is an excellent console and has a great variety of games, Nintendo titles, online multiplayer outings, big-name third party titles, backwards compatibility, a unique controller, and a bunch more. I keep hearing complaints about "no games" and "no one wanting Nintendo games"
No games? The system has 216 games as of October 17 (according to Wikipedia) compared to the competition's 180 and 102 along with the COMPLETE Wii library.
Don't like Nintendo games? 139 of those are multiplatform! And they include great titles like Arkham City, Darksiders, Call of Duty, and Mass Effect! There are even console exclusive titles that aren't "Nintendo" games like ZombiU, Wonderful 101, and Lego City.
What makes it even more frustrating is that the best selling games on both the One and PS4 are CoD: Ghosts and Assassin's Creed IV! Games available on the 360 and PS3! Most of the initial sales are from hardcore fans upgrading, so most of the 4 million PS4 sales came from people who had a PS3 and didn't need to upgrade to the new system and drop $470+!
And I've not heard anything good about the launch titles on the PS4 or One. The only good things I hear about any of those games is that they show off the graphical power of the system. Knack was awful, Ryse is boring, Killzone is more of the same, Forza could be better... The Wii U launch lineup? Mario U was fresh! Multiplatforms benefited greatly from the GamePad or off-TV play!
Then the Wii U name being too confusing? Nonsense! There's a different letter on there! Wii U ! In this world of smartphones and tablets, it would only take two seconds to look up the difference. I highly doubt so many people just thought it was a DS with 3D as well. But a name like Xbox One isn't confusing at all when we already have an XBOX 1!!
I'll stop here before I go on ranting, but this turn that gaming is taking is getting more and more annoying. Without Nintendo, there simply wouldn't be gaming like there is today if it was here at all. Gaming was dying. No one was taking game consoles seriously. Atari, Colecovision, Intellevision, all of those were merely phases that were going the way of the dodo. And then Nintendo strikes up a deal with the makers of that Teddy Ruxbin thing and gets gaming back into the mainstream. Without that, Sony wouldn't have gone to gaming. Microsoft wouldn't have gone to gaming. We'd either not have gaming at all or be generations behind where we are now.
Okay... Why are people being so ridiculous here? Mario Kart 7 had online multiplayer, so obviously it'll be included in Mario Kart 8.
Super Mario 3D World would be RUINED with online multiplayer. It's hard enough to play with my brother (super fun though) without him tossing me off the edge. I'd rather pal around and mess with a friend in the living room than have to shout at some idiot who thinks it's funny to toss our lives down the drain.
Online multiplayer in this game would just be awful. No one would stay together, stars would be missed, some fool would run for the flag and leave everyone in the dust to get that stupid crown, some kid would be a know-it-all and take away your own enjoyment, some jerk would constantly switch characters if they weren't all taken... It'd be a mess.
All of that annoying stuff is fine locally because when your brother or friend gets out of hand, you can pop them in the arm or something, have a good laugh, and be done with it.
Online multiplayer doesn't have to be shoehorned into every game in existence.
And while I'm on the subject, what's the deal with games that don't have local multiplayer, but have online multiplayer? What kind of crap is that??
ANYWAY, TL;DR, this game is fine with local multiplayer. Online would absolutely kill it.
@JaxonH Yeah, but in other news... The PS4 just passed 4 million units sold worldwide.
By the numbers, the Wii U should have more than this, but over the course of two months, the PS4's momentum hasn't exactly crashed down. And on top of that, it's doing it with the best games available on next gen: Assassin's Creed IV and Call of Duty Ghosts.
@hydeks (sarcasm mode on) It'd essentially be the same video because of the lack of backwards compatibility on the One's part and Super Mario 64 being available on the Wii VC. They revamped Goldeneye on the Wii and the Wii U can play Wii games. So... Yeah.
This game is great. I got it for Christmas and I enjoy it very much. I had a few frame drops until I downloaded the patch. Once I did that, no frame drops came that annoyed me.
@DJSmith99 Personally, i think the Miiverse is enough. I played multiplayer with my brother and I feel that local multiplayer with Mario is still the way to go.
If Mario Kart 8 doesn't have online, then I'll complain, but SM3DW is perfect with local multiplayer and no online.
I've been playing SM3DW, Wind Waker, and ACIV and noticed the issues with Miiverse. I hope this is the result of an obscene amount of Wii Us and 3DSs sold and not an issue with the NNIDs across the platforms.
I don't expect I'll get one since I got a Basic Wii U at launch and I only have six games for it. The only one I think I was able to register was Lego City Undercover.
I have bought a few titles on the eShop, but I only have about six of those.
Those of you that think Nintendo is going to drop the GamePad or Wii U within the next year or two are crazy. If Nintendo did that, would you want to buy the next system? Personally, I'm not swimming in cash, so thatisnt a viable option at all.
Even if the Wii U tanks, Nintendo will support it until their next console is ready. And even then, it may not be as powerful as the Xbox 4 and PS5. What sells a system in the end are games.
Granted, the Wii U didn't give a stellar year to fans, but the library is building. Eventually, the PS4 and One will hit their drought because of the new tech. And once the hype dies down, sales will dip as well.
I'm positive for the Wii U because Nintendo is behind it. The same company that made the Wii so enjoyable despite its significantly small amount of power compared to the PS3 and 360 can do the same here.
And even if it hits GameCube sales, as many of us have stated before, the GameCube had a great variety of titles and even cult classics to this day.
@Darth_Pascal I love Mii Force and Warrior's Way. Monster Manor is alright, but not as involving as the two I mentioned and Flower Town has SO MUCH STUFF in it. It's a bit overwhelming to me. It's a great game, don't get me wrong, but I bought it thinking it would be a neat little game to pass the time when I StreetPass. It's more on the order of Animal Crossing with how much time you need to devote to it to truly enjoy the experience. In all of the other games, I can get the people, do what I need, and be done. In Flower Town, there's a fair amount you can do and with so many options from buying new stuff for your garden, mixing plants, growing new plants, pollinating other plants, keeping track of growing 20 different plants, and such, it becomes a much bigger title than what I would expect from StreetPass.
I didn't watch the show, but I'm a touch upset that the reveal was one character in Donkey Kong. You all know what I wanted to see.
I suppose if I have the cash, I'll pick this game up.
Still think anything from Bayonetta, X, or Zelda would have been better. Those were previously announced titles and even something small about those games like side quests for Zelda or non-DLC costumes in Bayonetta would have sent the gaming world into a tizzy.
@URAmk2 Sorry I misread that. I wasn't raging, though.
But Knack wouldn't have to be watered down to run on Wii U. Not really. The game isn't so demanding that the PS3 couldn't handle it. And it's most certainly not the best display of tne PS4s power (that would be Killzone).
And, from what I've seen, you'd really have to dig for unflattering SM3DW screens.
I hope my parents get me this for Christmas. Sadly, I didn't have a GameCube, so I never played Wind Waker. When I got my Wii, I played Twilight Princess and planned on buying the Zelda Collector set with Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and a Wind Waker demo, but my friend bought it and I haven't seen one since. And on other occasions, I considered buying Wind Waker, but I never had a job and the $24.99 GameStop wanted for it was too expensive for me. After I got a job, I couldn't find a copy anywhere despite having three game stores within walking distance of my house.
Can't wait to sink my joysticks into this cult classic Zelda game.
@sinalefa I didn't even really know about Operation Rainfall until the games were confirmed to come to the US. Out of the three, I only have Xenoblade Chronicles and the Last Story. Pandora's Tower is on my list, but at the moment, I don't have the cash.
@Dogpigfish I still consider it rather cheap as compared to the PS4 and One. The backwards compatibility of the Wii U with the Wii's hardware and software help me save a lot of money by being able to keep using my old remotes. Sure, I'll probably invest in 3 more Pro Controllers which isn't cheap, but the same goes for any PS4 and One owners that want local multiplayer, so it balances out. As for HDD space, I know people that have those larger drives and still buy bigger ones for whatever reason.
@BinaryFragger
I never said it was as powerful as the One or PS4. I said it wasn't vastly underpowered as Kirk implied. The Wii U can definitely handle the games the PS4 and One can bring without some of the higher specs' bells and whistles like the rain particles and water effects in the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It's not like the Wii was compared to the PS3 and 360. And it's not even like developers would have to make a completely separate game to do so. Since the PS4 and One are "built more like computers" (whatever that means since game consoles are computers anyway...), the Wii U could get a version locked in with the lower scalable specs.
For example, the PS4, One, and PC all get a game like Skyrim or whatever. On the PC version, you can cut down on textures, lighting effects, water effects, and the like. The Wii U version would get that game without certain effects the system just couldn't pull off.
I'm not silly or blind. I've seen what the PS4 and One can do. In terms of specs, they are definitely stronger than the Wii U, but as many here anticipated, the gap isn't as large as last generation.
In terms of gameplay, the Wii U can also do what the Wii couldn't do and offer developers a more traditional controller to be able to port games over easier.
And just to ensure all bases are covered, I know the PS4 and One's true potential will be reached with games released farther down the line, but so will the Wii U. It started on the same level as the end of life PS360 games. It can only go up from there. Yes, it started there. Ports that weren't done lazily show that.
@Kirk If you aren't pleased with the Wii U, buy something else. As previously stated, we know everything isn't sunshine and rainbows with the Wii U. With every positive article for the Wii U, there are at least twenty "Doom" articles. And I don't know why using the term "fan" makes your point any more valid or right or whatever.
I don't know why you're having a go at me like I'm the only person enjoying their Wii U either. "Easily pleased?" Was that some kind of insult? I'm very disappointed that the Wii U's lost so much support and I'm upset some developers don't even want to look at the thing. I'm sorry that my enjoyment of the games I have makes me "easily pleased."
And yeah, you're not asking for much. You're only asking Nintendo to change their entire mantra and be a PSBOX clone.
The Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and 360 by enough that it is noticeable in the games where developers do more than a lazy port and with games that are on the PS4 as well (Ghosts and ACIV, for example) look just as good and play just as well with the exclusion of some textures and effects.
And yes, I am a fan. Is there anything wrong with that? Knock it off please, you're taking it too far — TBD
@I-AM-REGGIE The only thing I can think to say about the PS4 and One "no games" argument is that wouldn't be an issue if they would have kept backwards compatibility. The quality of games in the Wii library is debatable, but you can still pop in great titles like Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess.
@Kirk Except it's not "far less powerful." If you're going to tell us we need to see what's going on, you need to stop kidding yourself. The system is most certainly powerful enough to handle what the PS4 and One are getting this generation minus a few particle effects and textures.
@Kirk
It's not that we don't see what's going on. We see it every day. LITERALLY. We don't need people like you building on that.
We know the situation is dire.
We know the system isn't selling well.
We know everything isn't perfect.
We. [bleep]ing. Know.
We just want to have fun with what we have. We ARE having fun with what we have. We want people to know the fun they can have with the Wii U to help improve the abysmal sales.
Now, if you would so kindly, stop. Because, as stated, we know.
Said it once and I'll say it again. I have a Wii U and I love it. I have fun. I have Nintendo games and multiplats. I'm happy.
What upsets me is when I see all of this nonsense around gaming. I wish we could go back to the GameCube era of gaming. Remember that? When people had fun and when developers weren't so picky about platform (and no, I'm not talking out of my butt because I had Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the PC, GameCube, and GameBoyAdvance)? I want gaming to do THAT again. When low sales didn't make people upset because GAMES were what mattered? And hell, I don't even remember a constant stream of brown shooters then. I remember Spyro, Crash, Halo (before it was a mess of story), Mario, Smash Brothers...

Ditch the GamePad and make people buy a $500 tablet with less functionality to play games!

Re: Nintendo Was Dead To Us Very Quickly, States EA Source
EA doesn't make games for kids. Because no kid plays FIFA or Madden.
And EA used to make a lot of games. My favorite being the Harry Potter games, but I suppose those aren't for kids either.
EA... The worst company ever.
I suppose that means ZombiU, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Darksiders, and Bayonetta are kids' games.

"The game has no online, therefore is bad game not worthy of purchase."
Give me a break. And we wonder why Wii U support is so low.
Next we'll hear Zelda U doesn't have online multiplayer and everyone will get upset.
Funnily enough, there are a decent handful of games across all platforms that don't have local multiplayer, but that's fine.
Re: We Cannot Continue Without Winning, But It's Not As Simple As Moving Mario To Smartphones, Insists Iwata
Games and advertisement. Problem solved.
Revitalize old IPs, invest in new ones, and fork over some dough for the occasional multiplat.
More ads about the Wii U and, more importantly, more "Only on Wii U" commercials.
If Nintendo wants a good 2014, E3 needs to be a Nintendo Direct on steroids with some Mountain Dew and pop rocks.

Re: VGX Award Ceremony To Include New Footage of an Upcoming Wii U Game
I would most like to see Bayonetta, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., or Zelda.
The Zelda one is a fantasy, of course, but a single screenshot would make me happier than when Wind Waker HD was announced.
Re: Analysts Weigh In With Estimates for Wii U Fiscal Year Sales
And the positive buzz from all the glowing Super Mario 3D World reviews has gone.
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@Kirk
If you aren't pleased with the Wii U, buy something else.
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@Kirk
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@I-AM-REGGIE
The only thing I can think to say about the PS4 and One "no games" argument is that wouldn't be an issue if they would have kept backwards compatibility. The quality of games in the Wii library is debatable, but you can still pop in great titles like Mario Galaxy or Twilight Princess.
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@Kirk
Except it's not "far less powerful." If you're going to tell us we need to see what's going on, you need to stop kidding yourself. The system is most certainly powerful enough to handle what the PS4 and One are getting this generation minus a few particle effects and textures.
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@Kirk
You're saying that like if the Wii U was the most powerful system on the market that it would be the best selling system of all time.
All Nintendo needs to do is keep improving the Wii U like it has been this past month.
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
@Kirk
Re: PS4 and Xbox One Surpass Wii U Lifetime Sales in the UK
