Update:
Our original Japanese Charts post cited Media Create results from 4Gamer, but these appear to be incorrect. Our apologies for the error, and as an alternative below are the latest results from Famitsu.
Earlier this week we found out how Nintendo had performed over the festive period in Japan, with 3DS and Wii U dominant in terms of both hardware and software. The Famitsu charts covering 30th December to 5th January have now been released, and the trends have — for the most part — continued.
The software charts bring a return to the top for Pokémon X & Y. Just behind is the hugely popular Puzzle & Dragons Z on 3DS, while The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds sees its sales tail off but hold in third place. Wii U games hold the next three positions, with hardware bundles no doubt contributing; the top 20 is below.
1. [3DS] Pokemon X / Y (Pokemon Co.) - 152,888 units
2. [3DS] PazuDora Z: Puzzle & Dragons Z (GungHo Online Entertainment) - 151,806 units
3. [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo) - 68,578
4. [Wii U] Wii Party U (Nintendo) - 66,708
5. [Wii U] Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo) - 60,397 units
6. [Wii U] New Super Mario Bros. U (Nintendo) - 56,372 units
7. [PS3] Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (Square Enix) - 50,033 units
8. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (Capcom) - 48,622 units
9. [3DS] Battle For Money Sentouchuu: Densetsu no Shinobi no Survival Battle! (Bandai Namco Games) - 41,317 units
10. [PSV] Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster: Twin Pack (Square Enix) - 35,481 units
11. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo) - 31,795 units
12. [3DS] One Piece: Unlimited World Red (Bandai Namco Games) - 28,014 units
13. [PS3] New Dynasty Warriors: Gundam (Bandai Namco Games) - 27,971 units
14. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy: Big Bang / Supernova (Level 5) - 23,508 units
15. [3DS] Aikatsu! 2-nin no My Princess (Bandai Namco Games) - 21,970 units
16. [Wii U] Taiko no Tatsujin: Wii U Version! (Bandai Namco Games) - 21,441 units
17. [PS3] Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two Interactive Japan) - 19,829 units
18. [PS3] Gran Turismo 6 (Sony Computer Entertainment) - 19,774 units
19. [3DS] Friend Collection: New Life (Nintendo) - 19,665 units
20. [3DS] Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life (Bandai Namco Games) - 18,413 units
The hardware results bring drops for the Nintendo platforms, with the Vita and PS3 both enjoying increases. The 3DS (XL / LL and standard) are nevertheless dominant when combined, while even with a drop the Wii U remains well above its typical figures from most of 2013. The results are below, with last week's sales in parenthesis.
3DS - 187,920 units (208,893)
PSV - 88,169 units (75,207)
Wii U - 60,548 units (79,174)
PS3 - 40,941 units (27.020)
PSP - 12,069 units (9,451)
Wii - 1,727 units (2,719)
Xbox 360 - 1,124 units (770)
So there you have it, another reasonably strong week for Nintendo, with the Wii U still posting positive numbers compared to those so typical last year. The test for all platforms will be momentum through the rest of January, as it's typically a period short of major releases.

I hope Wii U keeps the momentum. We desperately need more third-party support. At this point developers will just ignore Nintendo's home console altogether.
Hmm, isn't this the same chart from earlier in the week? But these are the media create figures rather than the famitsu ones. If Link Between Worlds was released on the 26th, it's debut week would be Dec 23-29, not Dec 31 to Jan 5th?
It's great that the wii u is doing well in japan. Hopefully it does as well in other regions so it will get recognized as a competitor
Thats good to see that the Wii U is now selling well. If it can keep this momentum developers will start to think about release quality games on the Wii U instead of half baked ones.
So is FFX being released as a standalone game, and also bundled with X2?
Didn't they already post this? :<
Yeah, this week's chart is

Vita - 88,169
Wii U - 60,548
PS3 - 40,941
These results are from a slightly different period, plus this is Media Create and the other Famitsu. Certainly very similar to what came before, but keeps the flow of Media Create results going.
EDIT: I'm trying to figure out what's what just now, 4Gamer (via Gematsu) is normally correct.
It's good to see an increase in Vita hardware sales. Such a massively underrated system.
Weird, MyNintendoNews posted the results Peach64 has as the same period you guys are covering.
@SilentHunter382 The only half baked games have come from western devs so until Wii U gains a bigger fan base there then things will stay the same.
Right, if you refresh the results are now updated. The Gematsu / 4Gamer Media Create source seems to have been wonky this week, so we've reverted to Famitsu.
Thanks for the update and damn, already down to 60,000? With these trends I won't be surprised to see the Wii U back to 5000-10,000 monthly which is just sad.
Final Fantasy provided quite the boost for the Vita. Solid numbers for Nintendo, doing the old Herbie 1/3 finish. If anyone actually gets that reference.
Anyone think that Dynasty Warriors is selling well because of people wanting to know about Hyrule Warriors?
@XCWarrior
Lol, I got it and just got flooded with nostalgia.
Nice reference.
@Kmno
I think it's important to remember that any boost in sales is a good thing. That means there are more Wii Us in households, and in my opinion, that means they are more likely to convince others to get them due to increased perception of popularity. Even if the sales/week slows back down, I think it will likely remain above the slower rates of 2013.
One region appears to be decent. Now they just need to do the same for every other region and maintain momentum in Japan. At least the drop off was not as bad this time. First week of Jan was terrible last year for the sheer number of returned systems and amount of stock on shelves!
A drop off after Christmas was obvious, would be interesting to see how nests weeks figures read, and also look at global charts again and see if the Wii U can beat the Xbox One again
Like i said before. Nintendo has to come up with better hardware these days! More space please so it will be more attractive to 3rd parties to have games to be installed. WII U these days is like a handheld console. Sure it's better than xbox 360 maybe, but it's just not enough. .............................................. FLAT!
And BTW i DO supoort Nintendo! My first console when i was 8. That's like 23 years ago!
I'm glad they finally joined the 3DS XL and Standard figures together
Never mind about my deleted comment.
@Azooooz I think I'll stick with Famitsu for this week now!
Gets in quick people. The arm chair analysts will be here soon
well thats good for the wiiu if they keep this up the third party support might come back i hope.
This is actually REALLY good considering the expected drop off after Christmas. I mean, most people did their shopping before Christmas, so the fact there were still over 60,000 Wii U's sold is more than impressive. Vita got a huge bump from the release of Final Fantasy X/X-2, but without any substantial games on the way I'm not entirely confident the Vita will hold pace. Granted, Vita should still see a bump in the west once FFX/X-2 releases globally, even if only temporary.
I actually think the Vita will start seeing a little more success, in Japan at least. Those folks loved the PSP, and I'm sure they're looking for a reason to buy one.
One thing is for certain though, the days of near-death Wii U sales are over. Even at 60,000 per week, that's just under 250,000 per month JUST IN JAPAN. And let's cautiously lowball the remaining global sales at another 250,000 per month. That's half a million consoles per month, or 1.5 million per quarter. That's a FAR cry from the 160,000 Nintendo sold during the slowest quarter of 2013. And hopefully, as time progresses, the Wii U will actually start averaging MUCH more than just 60,000 per week in Japan. As more games release, sales will climb higher. I think Patcher's 20 million lifetime sales prediction is being flushed down the crapper as we speak lol...
@JaxonH Yeah, but in other news... The PS4 just passed 4 million units sold worldwide.
By the numbers, the Wii U should have more than this, but over the course of two months, the PS4's momentum hasn't exactly crashed down. And on top of that, it's doing it with the best games available on next gen: Assassin's Creed IV and Call of Duty Ghosts.
@kyuubikid213
And in OTHER other news, 3DS is outselling the PS4, Xbox One and PS Vita..... COMBINED.
Someone's always gonna sell more. There's only a handful of gaming devices in the market, and all but one of them are going to be selling "less than". Right now, PS4 is also selling "less than". So it's all relative.
The PS4 is doing great, and probably will til spring. But after all the hardcore fans buy one, and the fact hardly any exclusive games are on the release schedule in the near future, I predict the console will take a drastic hit. There are quite a few diehard PS fans now. More than there are for Nintendo. But the launch spurt always dies out eventually, and when it does, it's not going to be this invincible console anymore. After that, Sony's gonna have to earn each and every sale it gets.
It doesn't matter how well PS4 is doing. For one, it's riding the high of the diehard fans. For two, how many it sells has no bearing on the Wii U's success.
@Lance168 Dynasty Warriors are fun. If you ever enjoyed Double Dragon or TMNT II or III or any other beat em up, you will like Dynasty Warriors. They are just 3D versions of the same genre.
