I caught that in the game. Overall, I think this post should be marked as a Spoiler for those wanting to discover this on their own. I had to re-read the scroll in the game a couple times before I realized it was Luigi — I was totally not expecting it!

Jurys should not be used in patent lawsuits. Jury participants have no knowledge of patent law or how patents operate, and no one with knowledge of patents are allowed to jury anyway. Jurys were derived in the medieval ages to assess the credibility of the witness in criminal cases. Jurys are useful in criminal cases, but have no place in patent cases.
The lawyers in patent cases try to emotionalize the case so the jury can relate to it better. The jury isn't supposed to know anything about patents to keep their peer-influence as unbiased. However, patent law is based on having knowledge of prior art and what is claimed and what isn't claimed. You have to have knowledge of the patent system in order to make an informed decision.
I work in patent law. So many clients think they can patent something which has already been patented. And I work with them to help mold their idea into something that is patentable. You need to be knowledgeable about patents, in order to make an informed decision whether something is patentable or not patentable, and whether something is infringing or not infringing. That's why jurys should not be used in patent lawsuits.
NFW!!!! I was not expecting this till third quarter at the earliest. As much as I love my Red 3DS, I've been thinking about upgrading to the XL ever since Castlevania, and I have a feeling Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is gonna have me wishing for the XL.
I think Nintendo should release an XL that doesn't have a cartridge slot, so the XL could be super slim. Since I've gone completely eShop, I don't need a cartridge slot on my next 3DS.
I would get these, but I already have the Anniversary Collection for GameCube which has all the Mega Man NES through SNES. I would definitely pick up any Mega Man games that were exclusive to handhelds since those didn't make it into the Anniversary Collection.
Also, I have a difficult time seeing the graphics on my 3DS because the viewport is the size of a postage stamp. Some Virtual Console games don't bother me like Link's Awakening, but other's I can hardly see the character. Is this any better on the XL?
I hope Nintendo makes Retro a permanent branch of Team Nintendo. Retro has done an incredible job with the games they've done so far. I do not want to see them end up like Rare.
@moo99 LOL! Totally agree with you on the Indie Game movie! I bought the movie on iTunes thinking it was going to be more "behind the scenes" on how games are made, but it was actually a drama-filled "documentary" of Walmartians with awful facial hair who develop games. And what was up with showing the Insulin shots? WTH was that all about??
I'm actually waiting for all these system updates to be ironed out and buy a Wii U that has those updates built into the mainframe. However, I am worried that when the next freshly manufactured shipments of Wii U arrive with the updates built in, Nintendo will retire the 10% off Virtual Console deal
Oh man! I am loving this game so much!! I never got into the Castlevania series beyond the NES days. I got the demo, expecting to be disappointed like I was with Monster Hunter 3, but to my surprise I was enamored with the game - so much, that upon completing the demo, I immediately bought the retail game on eShop and cannot put the game down!
The retail game is actually way better than the demo! The demo was extremely difficult, whereas the retail game eases you into the difficulty at a gentler pace.
My only complaints are the cut-scene animations and the map. The cut-scene animations aren't drawn very well and the art style is in complete contrast to the gameplay's art style. The cut-scenes are more like Viewtiful Joe — heavy scribbly outlines, whereas the gameplay graphics are beautifully polished 3D graphics. The map is helpful and is based on the 2D side-scrolling schematic, but using it as a place of reference, it is full of WTF-ery. And don't get me started on the Voice Acting — it's hopelessly awful
Everything else is phenomenal!! One of the best parts of the game is the Auto-Save. The game Saves your progress so frequently, it masters the requirements of playing games on the go. Another aspect I like, which some hardcore gamers may not like, is the boss fights are sectioned out so that if you die, you re-enter the battle at the last section. Each boss fight has 4-5 sections, so if you die during section 3 of 5, you re-enter the battle at section 3. Now you can see how this would annoy the hardcore "gameover" gamers who complain about Mario not having gameovers anymore, when actually this caters to portable playing. I don't have time for video games which make you start all over because I pick-up-and-play more often with the 3DS, than sit for hours like I would for a console game.
Also, the music is beautiful!! Do not use the DS speakers, you have to wear headphones to take advantage of the gorgeous orchestral soundtrack. You WILL notice a difference!!
I agree with Damon's excellent review full-heartily and rate the game 8/10 as well.
@Suicine & @Gidkilla : I agree with you both. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I think the point PETA is trying to make is that the whale hunting has no purpose in the game and that Ubisoft's excuse of "well that's what they did back then" isn't reason enough to warrant the violence. If Ubisoft removed the whale killing from the game, would anyone notice it was missing? Would players be riding the ship expecting whale for dinner?
This is more evidence of video games glorifying violence while removing any real world consequences. There are a lot of horrific acts of violence that go on, but that doesn't mean players need to re-enact them through a video game. Video games are different from movies and tv because players are actually controlling and interacting with the violence.
Is whale killing the selling point of AC4?
Yes - then make whale killing it's own game if it's so profitable
No - then get rid of it
Rather than glorifying the bloody massacre and murder of a whale, why not celebrate the beauty a whale has?
That had me LOLing! I just bought Fractured Soul on sale this week. I liked the demo but felt $11.99 was too expensive. I would've bought it earlier if it had been the sale price ($7.99), I'm glad I waited! Still no River King in NA sigh
I'm excited to see Magi sold so well in it's first week. I really enjoy the anime series and I'm hoping the game will be localized with subtitles or at least put in the eShop.
I always thought those names were real!! Goodbye innocent childhood. Although, I never did like the Klobb's name. I guess the contradiction is with Goldeneye, even though I thought the guns were real, I never felt like I was holding a real gun in the video game, as opposed to Call of Duty and Metal of Honor.
Bravo Tom! This was such an excellent read!! You brought up so many good points that I hadn't thought about, such as remaking a remake - just how many times can you remake a game, and also how a new Zelda game will overshadow any hope for Majora's Mask remake. I do hope they can squeeze in Majora's Mask before the new Zelda game, especially since Majora's Mask remake would have a shorter lifespan as a "new release" than a brand new Zelda game. I think if they released Majora's Mask in time for E3, then that would leave enough cushion room to postpone a new Zelda game till 2014. But like you said, how many remakes can be used as filler games.
I played the demo. The partial voice tracks drove me nuts! They'll say one line or "Hello" and then they just grunt and sigh. The grunting and sighing annoyed me the most. I would have preferred the characters voice the entire dialogue rather than just the intro. Also, the main characters voice actor sounds exactly like Chris from Resident Evil: Revelations and doesn't fit Chrom that well. I don't know if the demo offered the Japanese voice track, so I can't comment on that. I was looking forward to the voice tracks because it adds more dimension to the game than just reading dialogue or a squabble noise to indicate conversation.
I'm fully supportive of bring retail games to eShop. However, digital content is NEVER on sale! And I don't consider $2 off a sale. I've saved over $75 by buying retail games on sale!! Sales on retail games average around $10 off. I just don't see those kind of sales on the eShop. The major downside with retail games is not having them all on your 3DS at the same time. I don't get StreetPasses too often, but when I do, I get them for more than one game, and they're typically games I haven't had in my 3DS for awhile.
@rayword45 I think the reason Kid Icarus isn't on the eShop (yet) is because of the 3DS stand they included with the retail game.
@Red_Kinetic I would love to be able to download or transfer my retail games to my 3DS so I could have them with me all the time. I can definitely see the possibility of a Downloaded eShop game utilizing the Save data from a retail game if the save data were stored in the 3DS, but I think it's stored in the game card. The only data stored on the 3DS are the StreetPass privileges.
However, I kinda want to wait for Pokemon Z before getting either of these. Do you think Z will be much different? What's the waiting period between XY release and Z release?
Ooooo! This looks cool! I like lions and Legos! The only thing I don't like is the name. I also thought it was China. Lego City didn't interest me, but this does. As long as it's a true 3DS game, not a DS port, or Console-downport.
@GeminiSaint So World 9 and Worlds A-D are separate worlds? World 9 is like Star World, then World A-D is like Special World? To put it in Super Mario World terms.
@KnightRider666 Thanks! I agree there is no need for Region Locking. I imported my Gameboy Advance back in the day before it was released in the States, with the Japanese versions of Super Mario Bros. 2, Mega Man Battle Network, and a couple Japan-only puzzle games that were really fun! There are Japanese games for 3DS I would import if it weren't for region locking - specifically Gundam 3D!
@rayword45 I did try that in my initial control set-up and preferred moving with the circle pad. The circle pad works better because you're moving in a 3d environment. The ABXY would be the same as using the directional controls + for moving Mario in 3DLand - too slow and linear. For moving in 3D, the circle pad is more fluid and responsive.
Super awesome!!! This is really well done with the foam and hardcase. I especially like the built-in screen. It needs to hold more games though. After a zombie apocalypse, I'ma need more than three games
I find it ironic that just five months ago the Nintendo Life Staff was bashing the New Super Mario Bros series so much so, they were demanding that Nintendo shelve Mario entirely for a few years, and yet they voted New Super Mario Bros and Paper Mario so highly. Overall, I thought the Staff picks played it safe. With access to so many games, I was expecting some hidden gems, instead the list was pretty generic. I guess at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with Mario; people who don't want a new Mario game end up loving the new Mario game.
I'm surprised at the number of complaints of Kid Icarus' play controls. I'm left-handed and I changed the controls around so I don't have to use the stylus. I've beaten the game and have played KI more than any other game. It really should be #1. I'm baffled that Resident Evil Revelations didn't make the top 3.
This is really cool and Nintendo Life should make a blog post dedicated to it so it gets more notice. This is a Fan video of what SHOULD be Mega Man X9 in honor of Mega Man's 25th!
Dear god! Is anyone steering this ship anymore?? Capcom: "We don't know what to do with our company, so help us by taking a survey and tell us what to do (even though we told you not to expect anything from us)" I'm surprised they took the effort to spell Mega Man correctly.
@NintendoLife: I wrote up the headline we will be reading in 6 months: Capcom declares bankruptcy; Top executives paid $500,000 bonuses; Mega Man IP found in dumpster
Great reads! Although, I think you could have delved into the Mega Man X series more since it's more extensive than the Mega Man Classic series. And you left out MMX: Command Mission which was the dedicated RPG to the X series.
Overall, I thought your Mega Man review started out strong with Classics pt.1, but then the remainder felt rushed. I don't think it would've strained you too much to include Mega Man Soccer somewhere. Mega Man Soccer displayed how (at one point in time) Mega Man was the "Mario" of Capcom. Capcom made reasonable attempts to expand Mega Man into other genres to tear down the isotropic walls as Nintendo had accomplished with Mario. Btw, Mega Man Soccer was so much fun!!! Especially if you're a fan of the Classic series. Also a mention of MM: Powered Up and MM: Maverick Hunter would have been a nice accent to your review series.
I understand the task of covering the Mega Man universe is challenging, but there seems to be a lot of Nintendo Life readers who have never experienced Mega Man, and I think there was more history you could have introduced to them. Because a lot of Nintendo Life readers are unfamiliar with Mega Man, they don't understand the pain and backstabbing felt by Capcom's treatment of Mega Man this past year. Before Resident Evil or Monster Hunter, Mega Man was more than the face of Capcom, he was Capcom's Mario. If they could imagine Nintendo treating Mario or Link the way Capcom has been treating Mega Man, then they can begin to understand that for Mega Man fans it was more than cancelling a video game or releasing a watch-thru game; it was Capcom throwing their mascot under the bus.
Yes, Mario is the face of video games now, but for some of us, Mega Man is our Mario.
I LOVE smashing pots in Zelda! This is exactly how I feel when I play Zelda. I can not walk by a pot and without breaking it. The little things bring so much joy!
I'm sorry, but Link riding around in a go-kart is gimmicky to me. Samus riding in a go-kart would look silly. The reason Sega-All-Stars works with characters outside of Sonic is because NONE of the their franchises are strong enough to have a dedicated racing game. Instead, the game becomes a celebration of Sega franchises. Nintendo does not have this problem. If Nintendo felt Mario Kart needed a boost by adding franchise characters they would have added them in a long time ago. Nintendo knows what they are doing and why they are doing it.
@theblackdragon I don't think the GamePad's advantages would be that significant. The GamePad makes inventory selecting and map viewing more accessible. It would be like someone playing Zelda Ocarina on N64 versus Zelda Ocarina 3DS. The accessibility doesn't change the way you play the game. I still have to go into my menu to change items or look at maps.
@ultraraichu I totally agree! I was running errands all day today. I went downtown, the grocery store, and a shopping district, and I did not get a single StreetPass
The most I ever get when I'm out and about is 1. The last StreetPass I had was four months ago
...hardcore people will keep buying their consoles, but they're not going to only play with Nintendo consoles
What's wrong with that? Hasn't it been that way since the beginning? I owned a Nintendo alongside Sega and Playstation. Why is it bad when a Nintendo owner buys an Xbox to play Halo, but it's okay for an Xbox owner to buy a Nintendo to play Mario?
The problem with playing Call of Duty online is it's a community and if there's only four people playing it on the Wii U it's no fun.
Perhaps, COD should make their community universal so Wii U owners can multi-play with Xbox owners. Why segregate your online community into console communities?
This wasn't really a "review". This was more: "I took it out of the box and plugged it in". Compared to the reviews you guys do for games, I was expecting something more thought out. Much of the information in your review, we already knew from previous reports. Really the only thing new you brought to the discussion was the Receptive Touchscreen and the Wii U locking up (which I've read on Amazon). Overall, it seemed that you were a little more disappointed with the Wii U than you thought you would be and didn't want to say it out loud. At least, that was the impression I got.
Also, the GamePad is NOT a Tablet. A tablet is a laptop computer without the keyboard. The GamePad is a game controller with a screen. So I think it's incorrect to compare the GamePad to a tablet.
I find holding the device in my hand - looking up at the screen and looking down at the device - slightly confusing as a consumer.
Poor guy! You can't multitask in your old age? Let's hope he doesn't text and drive!
When you're holding a Kindle Fire or an iPad in your hand, it's just amazing technology. It really is. It's expensive, but it's amazing technology.
ehhhhh, I'm sorry I don't feel that way. I got over my Apple fandom years ago, you know when Apple was actually releasing "amazing" technology. I no longer have a need or use for an iPhone or iPad. The most I use it for is email.
I can remember everybody in the industry laughing and giggling about how stupid the Wii was, what a stupid name it was, and who would want motion control. And then it went on to sell what, 60, 70 million copies?
tee hee, I'm giggling about how you're repeating your actions all over again with the Wii U, but are oblivious to it. But go ahead and continue drawing out your conclusions, you already proved yourself wrong the first time.
P.S. - Dear NintendoLife, just because someone has worked in the video game industry does not make them a "legend".
Although he's not been directly involved in the industry for quite some time, his opinion still holds a lot of weight.
Why would his opinion still hold weight if he has not been involved with the industry for quite some time? The industry today is not the same industry it was when he was involved. Industries grow and evolve, sometimes devolve, but if you're not involved and keeping up with current technology, why would your opinion carry any weight? Martin Cooper invented the first cellphone in 1973, do you think his opinion of the iPhone holds a lot of weight, after all, Martin Cooper is the godfather of cellphones.
This game was epic in every possible way! It's an absolute must for any 3DS owner!! Even if it's not your genre, you get used to the monsters The story and characters are so engrossing, you won't be able to put the game down. The controls make use of every button on the 3DS without being cumbersome and are very intuitive. This game is listed in my Activity Log as averaging my longest playtime at 3hrs.
My only complaint is the aliasing and offset coloring during the cutscenes, but there's no visual malfunctions during gameplay which matters most, so don't let my complaint stop you from trying out one of the top 3 games for 3DS!!
Even though I am interested in the launch titles, I feel that they're too violent and Nintendo failed to balance out the line-up with more family-friendly titles for the holiday season.
Also, where's the 3DS line-up for Christmas? I feel like the 3DS is being neglected this holiday season to instead focus on the Wii U. I think Luigi's Mansion 2 would have been a great release for the holidays.
@AceGrey @R-L-A-George @Urbanhispanic - You're welcome!! Thanks for the support! I added some information on what those statistics are telling us.
What stood out to me most with those statistics was that one region didn't dominate the 3DS market. I always thought Japan would dominate the 3DS market because that's where Nintendo is based. But actually Japan and America balance out on releases. With that said, I still think access to imported games should not be restricted with region-locking. I wanna play Gundam 3D! And since I actually prefer Japanese voice actors, I would rather have the Japanese dialogue left intact, of course translations wouldn't hurt. I just don't think I should have to import a Japanese 3DS to play a game, when my domestic 3DS is fully capable of playing the game.

Ooooo! This looks cool! I like lions and Legos! The only thing I don't like is the name. I also thought it was China. Lego City didn't interest me, but this does. As long as it's a true 3DS game, not a DS port, or Console-downport.
Re: Review: Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (3DS eShop / NES)
@GeminiSaint So World 9 and Worlds A-D are separate worlds? World 9 is like Star World, then World A-D is like Special World? To put it in Super Mario World terms.
Re: Renegade Kid Worried About 3DS Piracy
@KnightRider666 Thanks! I agree there is no need for Region Locking. I imported my Gameboy Advance back in the day before it was released in the States, with the Japanese versions of Super Mario Bros. 2, Mega Man Battle Network, and a couple Japan-only puzzle games that were really fun! There are Japanese games for 3DS I would import if it weren't for region locking - specifically Gundam 3D!
Re: Game of the Year: Nintendo Life's Community Awards 2012
@rayword45 I did try that in my initial control set-up and preferred moving with the circle pad. The circle pad works better because you're moving in a 3d environment. The ABXY would be the same as using the directional controls + for moving Mario in 3DLand - too slow and linear. For moving in 3D, the circle pad is more fluid and responsive.
Re: Game of the Year: Nintendo Life's Community Awards 2012
Kid Icarus #1!!! The community is Uprising! Bow down staffers!! Muahahahaha!!!
@rayword45 I'm left-handed. I move with the Circle Pad, aim with ABXY, shoot with R, and have a blast!
Re: In Need Of A Portable Super Nintendo? Look No Further
Super awesome!!! This is really well done with the foam and hardcase. I especially like the built-in screen. It needs to hold more games though. After a zombie apocalypse, I'ma need more than three games
Re: Renegade Kid Worried About 3DS Piracy
Cry me a river! Hacking is inevitable. Yes, Nintendo is taking the proper steps to prevent piracy. Renegade Kid get your panties out of a bunch.
You won't be missed. Mutant Mudds was boring and didn't even rank GOTY on Nintendo Life.
With Nintendo offering 1st party download games like Zelda 3D, Mario 3DLand, do you really think they're going to sit idle to pirating??
If you quit doing what you love because there's a possibility of hacking, maybe you don't really love what you do and are only in it for the money.
Re: Game of the Year: Nintendo Life's Staff Awards 2012
Re: Feature: Time to Vote For Your Game of the Year
Why do we have to email you? Why didn't you just make a poll or accept comment submissions?
3DS Retail
#1: Kid Icarus Uprising
#2: Resident Evil Revelations
This was such a close tie for #1, but the #1 spot went to Kid Icarus because of replay value and daily spot-pass weapons.
Re: Capcom Wishes Everyone A Merry 'Mega Man' Christmas
This is really cool and Nintendo Life should make a blog post dedicated to it so it gets more notice. This is a Fan video of what SHOULD be Mega Man X9 in honor of Mega Man's 25th!
Re: Capcom Wants Your Help For Future Digital Releases
Dear god! Is anyone steering this ship anymore??
Capcom: "We don't know what to do with our company, so help us by taking a survey and tell us what to do (even though we told you not to expect anything from us)"
I'm surprised they took the effort to spell Mega Man correctly.
@NintendoLife: I wrote up the headline we will be reading in 6 months:
Capcom declares bankruptcy; Top executives paid $500,000 bonuses; Mega Man IP found in dumpster
Re: Nintendo Is Sorry For Wii U Load Times, Is Working On A Fix
Don't forget the sluggish load times for Mario Kart 7! OMG the courses take forever to load! The online multiplay is even worse!
Re: Feature: The Confusing World of Mega Man Spin-Offs - Part 2
Re: Amazing Fan-Made Video Explores Link's Obsession With Smashing Pots
I LOVE smashing pots in Zelda! This is exactly how I feel when I play Zelda. I can not walk by a pot and without breaking it. The little things bring so much joy!
Re: Sumo Digital: Mario Kart Should Incorporate Other Nintendo Franchises
I'm sorry, but Link riding around in a go-kart is gimmicky to me. Samus riding in a go-kart would look silly. The reason Sega-All-Stars works with characters outside of Sonic is because NONE of the their franchises are strong enough to have a dedicated racing game. Instead, the game becomes a celebration of Sega franchises. Nintendo does not have this problem. If Nintendo felt Mario Kart needed a boost by adding franchise characters they would have added them in a long time ago. Nintendo knows what they are doing and why they are doing it.
Re: Luigi's Mansion 2, Castlevania and Brain Training Coming Spring 2013 in Europe and North America
So what games are coming out between now and Spring 2013? This release schedule was same schedule released months ago.
I want some Donkey Kong Country on my 3DS.
Re: Pachter: "I think Nintendo becomes completely irrelevant"
@theblackdragon I don't think the GamePad's advantages would be that significant. The GamePad makes inventory selecting and map viewing more accessible. It would be like someone playing Zelda Ocarina on N64 versus Zelda Ocarina 3DS. The accessibility doesn't change the way you play the game. I still have to go into my menu to change items or look at maps.
Re: 3DS Continues To Decimate The Competition in Japan
@ultraraichu I totally agree! I was running errands all day today. I went downtown, the grocery store, and a shopping district, and I did not get a single StreetPass
The most I ever get when I'm out and about is 1. The last StreetPass I had was four months ago
Re: Pachter: "I think Nintendo becomes completely irrelevant"
What's wrong with that? Hasn't it been that way since the beginning? I owned a Nintendo alongside Sega and Playstation. Why is it bad when a Nintendo owner buys an Xbox to play Halo, but it's okay for an Xbox owner to buy a Nintendo to play Mario?
Perhaps, COD should make their community universal so Wii U owners can multi-play with Xbox owners. Why segregate your online community into console communities?
Re: Wii U Wasn't The Only Nintendo Hardware Launch In Europe This Month
Love it!!! America needs new colors and bundles for christmas!
Re: Hardware Review: Wii U
Re: Molyneux: Wii U Is Good, But It's Not Great
Poor guy! You can't multitask in your old age? Let's hope he doesn't text and drive!
ehhhhh, I'm sorry I don't feel that way. I got over my Apple fandom years ago, you know when Apple was actually releasing "amazing" technology. I no longer have a need or use for an iPhone or iPad. The most I use it for is email.
tee hee, I'm giggling about how you're repeating your actions all over again with the Wii U, but are oblivious to it. But go ahead and continue drawing out your conclusions, you already proved yourself wrong the first time.
P.S. - Dear NintendoLife, just because someone has worked in the video game industry does not make them a "legend".
Re: The Godfather of Video Games Is Baffled By The Wii U
Why would his opinion still hold weight if he has not been involved with the industry for quite some time? The industry today is not the same industry it was when he was involved. Industries grow and evolve, sometimes devolve, but if you're not involved and keeping up with current technology, why would your opinion carry any weight? Martin Cooper invented the first cellphone in 1973, do you think his opinion of the iPhone holds a lot of weight, after all, Martin Cooper is the godfather of cellphones.
Re: Resident Evil Revelations Jumping Ship To PS3?
Re: Nintendo Provides Final Wii U Launch Line-Up for Europe
Even though I am interested in the launch titles, I feel that they're too violent and Nintendo failed to balance out the line-up with more family-friendly titles for the holiday season.
Also, where's the 3DS line-up for Christmas? I feel like the 3DS is being neglected this holiday season to instead focus on the Wii U. I think Luigi's Mansion 2 would have been a great release for the holidays.
Re: Nintendo Of Korea's eShop Will Offer Both Japanese And English Titles
