Simmer down y'all!! You'll get your 3D Mario Wii U in time! All this retrospect talk about past Mario games and Consoles, you guys skipped over a very big elephant! Nintendo stopped releasing brand-spankin-new Mario alongside Console releases with the GameCube. The last time Nintendo released a new Console with a ground-breaking Mario game was with the N64. GameCube was released alongside Luigi's Mansion. Wii was released with Wii Sports. The reason the 3DS tanked when it was released was because of the high price, but also because there was NO Mario game with the release! 3DS sales skyrocketed after Mario 3DLand was released. Nintendo recognized that Mario MUST be released with new hardware.
So we have the 3DS XL release alongside NSMB:2 and we have Wii U released alongside NSMB:U. Nintendo scrambled to put a team together for NSMB:2 in time for the XL release because the NSMB team was working on the Wii U game, which proves that Nintendo recognized: new hardware == new Mario
Now! The Wii was hugely successful with families. NSMB:Wii was hugely successful with families. Nintendo is MARKETING Wii U towards families!! So of course Nintendo is going to release the Wii U with a Mario title that is family-oriented. You guys even said what made NSMB:Wii so much fun, despite being a redundant game, was playing with your spouses!!!!!!
As we have seen with Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy, a 3D ground-breaking Mario will be released within the first year of the Wii U launch. 3D Mario is no longer Console-launch material. Multiplayer 2D Mario replaced that. And as we have seen with every 3D Mario, Nintendo changes the rules for what 3D should be and is capable of. But 3D still turns off a lot of players.
The reason Zelda feels so epic is because Nintendo hasn't cross-genred the Zelda brand with spin-offs. There's a reason why there is no Zelda Tennis or Zelda Party 9, or even Zelda Kart Racing. Mario is a FAMILY brand. That's why Mario is able to play tennis, play soccer, play board games, play kart racing, etc. Mario is the Mickey Mouse of Nintendo; a brand that is able to take on as many roles as possible without the side-effect of harming the brand.
Also, you guys say that all these Mario releases will tarnish the brand and turn people off. However, Nintendo has been doing this with Mario since the NES and Gameboy. There's been Dr. Mario, Mario Pinball, Mario Picross, Mario Party, Mario Fortune Street, Paper Mario, etc., with my personal favorite spin-offs being "Mario Is Missing!" and "Super Mario RPG" (EPIC!!!!).
So sit back and enjoy NSMB:U with your family as the game was intended!! And 3D Mario Wii U in HD will be released later next year and be so epic there will be a baby boom among gamers!
Nintendo KNOWS what they're doing! WE ARE NOT WORTHY!!!!!
Mega Man X2 is actually my favorite in the X series. X2 really took the series to a higher level. In fact, a lot of the new additions in X2 became staple features in the following sequels, like the Hover Bike, Magna Centipede's computer stage, Flame Stag's volcano stage, and the X-Hunters. Also most notable is that this is the only X game that doesn't have a Snow/Ice stage (Crystal Snail's stage is an underground crystal cavern with ice-like floors, and X5 has a water stage with Ice weapons).
The music in X2 is incredible! Especially Bubble Crab's music! Which is one of the best in the whole X series. In fact, Bubble Crab's music was recycled/remixed in X5.
Also, the Air Dash is flipping awesome!!! The Air Dash may seem redundant, but it opened up a whole new way to play and became absolutely critical to gameplay and the series's evolution.
Now, X3 was when things went haywire. There were so many things that went wrong in that game that shouldn't have, like the music DURING gameplay was muffled, the hover jump had a late reaction time (but perfected in X4), the X-Buster upgrade had a slow firing time, the forced battles with Bit and Byte before you had a chance to level up, and the difficulty level was really high.
I think X2 should have at least gotten a 9/10
My List for Mega Man X series (which is my #1 favorite series of all games!!!)
1.) Mega Man X2
2.) Meg Man X
3.) Mega Man X4
4.) Mega Man X6
5.) Mega Man X5
6.) Mega Man X3 (I would like to mention X3 has one of the best soundtracks! — just not during gameplay; the OST is where the music shines!)
I haven't played X7 or X8 because I don't have a PS2, and Command Mission is a beautiful but poorly lacking RPG
Hmmm, I was actually having a conversation with a friend about this very topic not too long ago. And my favorite Mario was Super Mario World! Cape Mario is one of my favorite transformations (even though it looks more like a blanket ^_^ ) I wasn't as crazy about SMB3 as everyone else was when it was released. I enjoyed it. I liked how you could stock up on items and store them. And looking back I can see how NSMB for the DS was really influenced by SMB3.
Another Poll you can do is "Favorite Mario Power-Up"
Theatrhythm:FF has been SOLD OUT on Newegg for the last month, and has been listed on Amazon for over $50 for the last month with the peak price being $58. I think Theatrhythm surpassed sales expectations!
Also, Square Enix has been developing their Luminous Engine which hasn't been released yet.
I would like to add that Mobile App games were originally and many still are internet FLASH games converted over to iPhone/Android. Also the majority of the games have very limited controls, i.e., one tap or one swipe as in Angry Birds or Where's My Water, unlike non-mobile games where you incorporate multiple button commands. The single Swipe command works great for Angry Birds, but a single swipe or single tap technique would not work for Zelda or Kid Icarus Uprising.
Face it, Mobile Games are more simplistic with minimal controls that are ultimately designed for players who would have difficulty playing games that are more complex and require "button mashing". The people I know who are "addicted" to Angry Birds and Where's My Water have trouble using a standard Nintendo controller or DS system, which was one of the reasons Nintendo developed motion-control with the Wii - to make game play more intuitive with how your body naturally moves, so people who have trouble with thumb-based controllers can play games.
I find it interesting that these "experts" trash-talking Nintendo make no comment about the future of Sony and Xbox. I think Nintendo would outlast Sony and Xbox before it crashed. And I think this guy's opinion is a little bias, seeing as how he is a MOBILE publisher.
As someone who owns an iPhone with Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Angry Birds, Jetpack Jack, Sonic, and a slew of smartphone-only games, I came to the conclusion that smartphone gaming sucked! Which was the main reason why I bought a 3DS - I couldn't stand playing games on my phone. Smartphones are NOT gaming devices! That's not what they were designed for! Apps and games were an afterthought; Steve Jobs was even AGAINST games being on the iPhone to begin with! Smartphones were developed to combine Phone - Internet - Music/Movies. They were not developed with games in mind AT ALL! The App Store which was released during the SECOND Generation iPhone is what made the iPhone successful. Apple learned that CONTENT is KING! Without content, your property has no chance for success. And that content was designed and developed by THIRD party companies. Apple "makes" the device and third-party companies make the content.
If all that is separating Apple's success and Nintendo's demise, is that Apple's device can be used as a phone that's not saying much, especially since the iPhone is a terrible phone.
Eventually, Nintendo will add phone capabilities to their devices. I think the main reason they have not add phone to their DS line is because of the PHONE CARRIERS. I don't think Nintendo wants to jump in bed with those parasites just yet. I'm hoping that by the time Nintendo adds phone to their handheld devices it will be at a time when the phone carriers are not the monopolistic gate-keepers they are today. I canceled my At&t account about a year ago, and now I use my iPhone as a wifi phone and couldn't be happier! I hope wifi will replace the need for phone carriers but that will be like the story of David & Goliath.
I read thru the patent. I can see how he felt Nintendo was infriging. You can't blame him for trying. Didn't Nintendo pay $100,000 to a patent troll regarding the DS, which was totally unwarranted imo.
Honestly, the lack of HD support in the Wii was the main reason I never got one. I've been a Nintendo supporter from NES and GB on up, and the only console I missed out on was the Wii. But if the Wii U was not in 1080p, I would NOT buy it. We're living in a BluRay/1080p Era now, it's absolutely critical Nintendo jump aboard. And the immense success of the Wii stalled the release of the next gen console. I'm definitely getting a Wii U tho!! I'ma wet my pants just thinking about Zelda in 1080!!!
Super cute!! I'll definitely pre-order Harvest Moon just for the yak. I've always wanted to play the HM series. There was a Fishing Game released for Gameboy (I think) that was similar to Harvest Moon, that I really enjoyed! I can't remember the name of it tho. The character designs were similar. Does anyone know the game?
@k8sMum According to Wikipedia the release dates are:
This is a definite buy for me! I read the Iwata Asks the other night for this game, and it just solidified my purchase even more. I highly recommend reading the Iwata Asks if you're interested in why they made the game the way they did.
I really wanted t o get this, but $10 is too expensive. Also, this game is listed on Amazon in cartridge form for $29.99, with a release date in August - is this still true? I thought I read somewhere that they scrapped the physical release for the digital download.
I'm going to wait for the demo before buying this. I watched the video footage, and I can not stand the music!! Renegade Kid really needs to hire a music director! The music for Mutant Mudd was atrocious and the music for Planet Crashers is worse! Also someone said there's only the one song for the whole Planet Crashers game, is this true?
Another question, you mentioned the iOS version has more content. I looked on the App Store for Planet Crashers and nothing came up. Is it under a different name?
You heard it here first! "Zelda 64 Remastered for the New iPad 27!! Coming to iTunes' App Store in the year 2087!!!" That's right folks! In the year 2087, Nintendo has fallen on tough times and is now a 5th Party Developer, WhoaOh!! In this dystopian future, Apple has resurrected the merciless Steve Jobs as a head-in-a-jar, and Nintendo's only glimmer of hope is to release Mario on Apple devices, where Apple takes a 30% profit margin!
Because in Bing Gordon's crystal ball, Nintendo is in shambles, while Apple is still releasing iPhones and iPads as the #1 product manufacturer in the world! Because Apple's never going away! Just Nintendo!!! Muahahahaha!!!
This of course all happens two days before the zombie apocalypse which wipes out 2/3 of the planet's population. Thanks Bing!! Someone should really get you in touch with Nintendo stat!
I would totally buy a transparent XL in a heartbeat! It reminds me of my old transparent Gameboy B&W! And I really like the transparent purple @wariowoods posted! That would be a must-buy!!
My only worry is that Digital Downloads will "cheapen" the game to me because I have quick access to it, whereas a physical copy has more weight to it. I have a lot of iPhone games that I never play, some I've bought and never synced to my phone, because they felt disposable. And I think 3DS digital downloads would be the same. I've bought a couple games from the eShop and I played for a few minutes and have no desire to replay. Whereas having a physical cartridge in my 3DS "demands" my attention because it has more VALUE to me.
Also, I'm super lazy when it comes to swapping out games. Once a game is locked and loaded into my 3DS, it's there until it has been 100% complete and I have a new game lined up to replace it.
@Token_Girl Hmm, you've made an excellent argument on reasons to download. I do like the idea of playing the download version on a future 5DS or whichever console. I do keep all my consoles and gameboys, but I rarely use them when a sparkling new gameboy/ds comes out, and I really don't play old games because I'm so consumed with the current generation games. I've been thinking about digging out New Super Mario Bros DS to play while I wait for the new one, but I'd rather explore new 3DS games and I'm too lazy to dig out my DS storage.
I take my 3DS with me every time I leave the house and I've only received two StreetPasses and I go to populated neighborhoods. I don't think 3DS is popular where I live. I went to the Zelda Symphony and collected 50 StreetPasses out of an audience of 500 or so. I don't have any puzzles finished. When I buy puzzle pieces with Play Coins, they give me puzzle pieces I already have. One time, I got the same puzzle piece three times in a row and it was a puzzle piece I had prior to using Play Coins!
I just downloaded the new Kirby puzzle and its the size of the Mario Kart 7 puzzle (40 pieces - 8 pink). I'd prefer if they went back to the the smaller puzzle sizes like New Super Mario Bros Wii or Ocarina/StarFox size. OR at least open up the Mii Plaza games to SpotPass! What's the point of gathering SpotPass Miis in your Plaza if you can't use them in the Plaza games??
This was too freakin' cool!! Axel has one hell of a spinning aerial kick! And that wall kick was pretty awesome!! I really liked the locations they used. Not sure what I would have thought if I drove by and saw them fighting on the side of the street.
@manganimist Actually you can get Rhythm Thief on Amazon and Newegg for $29.99 if you're in the US of A. I thought the demo was fun, mainly because I really like the music. However reviewers on Amazon said that there's more features and gameplay beyond rhythm timing. I really want to get this game, but with Kingdom Hearts and New Super Mario Bros. 2, my extra spending money is gonna be tapped out, not to mention I want to get FF: Theatrhythm for nostalgia purposes.
On a side note: Anyone else think Rhythm Thief would make a good anime? Lupan for the new generation? (Am I really that old??)
This is on my list of games to get! I thought the demo was fun! I didn't know about the "Drop" feature, that's my main concern.
A couple questions I have: 1.) Does the "Drop" feature "push" you thru the game? You said, you play each level with both Sora and Riku, but if you're playing as Sora and you're dropped for Riku, do you replay the level with Sora when Riku's dropped or are you progressed to the next level? 2.) Any estimation on gameplay length? You said there's only five levels and you play them with both Riku and Sora. So it sounds kinda short to me.
Hopefully KH1 and KH2 will be remastered for the Wii U! So I can play them!
I'll be getting this. I love everything Mario! (Except the ones that use a Mario skin to create sales - I'm looking at you Dr. Mario!).
I'm mad that this game will feature DLC after its release! NOT COOL Nintendo!! If you wanna make a game with DLC, then make the game centered around that and go the "Freemium" route - where the game is FREE, but with in-app purchases, as is prevalent with iPhone games. This is one of the reasons I didn't buy FF: Theatrthym, there's like a dozen additional songs you can buy for $0.99 each. If you're not careful, you could be buying the game over a second time with all the DLC.
They're not gonna let you watch a 2.5 hour movie on your 3DS without being notified every 30mins to take a 15min break. Nintendo doesn't want you to play 3D games for long periods of time, they're certainly not going to let you watch a 3D movie!
There's room for a second Circle Pad! Get on it Nintendo!! The Circle Pads should be inline as they are on the Wii U and Circle Pad Pro. Nintendo just didn't want to put the money into reconfiguring the 3DS.
I think Nintendo learned from the Console Wars back in the 90's when Sega was their arch-nemesis that if your business model is centered on 1-UPing your competition's graphics engine then you're not thinking about new approaches to how you play a game. And since Nintendo has a huge first-party library (Mario, et al.), they're not only building a new console, they're also building new games to play on that console. Whereas today's Console Wars with PS and Xbox rely on 3rd party developers for their game library, which gives Sony and MS time to focus on their console engines while the third-party developers focus on the games.
But I think what Sony and Microsoft have brought to the world of gaming is just as valid. Sony brings the latest and greatest graphics. And Xbox has brought online voice co-op to the living room. And those things have Nintendo fans asking for them as well, like HD graphics (Wii U) and 3DS online play (Mario Kart 7).
So they all bring something to the table, its just Nintendo focuses on gameplay, while Sony focuses on graphics, and Xbox focuses on online community.
I want to try it out in a store first, but I don't think I'll be getting one. I don't understand how the xL will be more comfortable. I'll still be playing StarFox 64 awkwardly and painfully because the A button is too far to the right. But I think it will make the L & R buttons easier to use, right now I can only use one or the other.
What I want in a 3DS upgrade: 1.) second thumb pad (the Wii U Gamepad has two) 2.) ergometric (a little ergo would go a long way) 3.) increased resolution, not just stretching (retina anyone?) 4.) more unique color options (I do like the Waluigi-purple used in the Majora's Mask example)
And Nintendo is answering that list with the Wii U Gamepad, so I have that to look forward to.
I don't see what some of you are griping about, especially those who have never used White Tanooki. White Tanooki Mario is so much fun!! It was a suit I enjoyed using. I didn't see it as a superior/inferior play; I saw it as a fun easter egg.

Re: Feature: Wario is Missing?
YES! Super Wario Bros w/ Wario and Waluigi who have to rescue Pirate Princess Apricot from the Mushroom Convent!
Take some chances Nintendo!!!
Re: Grab Your Kirby 20th Anniversary Puzzle Swap Piece Now
I take my 3DS with me every time I leave the house and I've only received two StreetPasses and I go to populated neighborhoods.
Re: Streets of Rage Gets Real in Fan Movie
This was too freakin' cool!! Axel has one hell of a spinning aerial kick! And that wall kick was pretty awesome!! I really liked the locations they used. Not sure what I would have thought if I drove by and saw them fighting on the side of the street.
Re: Talking Point: Music and Rhythm Games Are Coming Back
@manganimist Actually you can get Rhythm Thief on Amazon and Newegg for $29.99 if you're in the US of A.
Re: New Mario Bros. 2 Footage Hops Over From Japan
Omg the wait is killing me! It's still a month away for USA release!
Re: Review: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (3DS)
This is on my list of games to get! I thought the demo was fun! I didn't know about the "Drop" feature, that's my main concern.
A couple questions I have:
1.) Does the "Drop" feature "push" you thru the game? You said, you play each level with both Sora and Riku, but if you're playing as Sora and you're dropped for Riku, do you replay the level with Sora when Riku's dropped or are you progressed to the next level?
2.) Any estimation on gameplay length? You said there's only five levels and you play them with both Riku and Sora. So it sounds kinda short to me.
Hopefully KH1 and KH2 will be remastered for the Wii U! So I can play them!
Re: Mario Explores New Environments in Latest Trailer
Re: Talking Point: 3DS XL's Media Potential
They're not gonna let you watch a 2.5 hour movie on your 3DS without being notified every 30mins to take a 15min break. Nintendo doesn't want you to play 3D games for long periods of time, they're certainly not going to let you watch a 3D movie!
Re: 3DS XL With Two Circle Pads Advertised by UK Store
There's room for a second Circle Pad! Get on it Nintendo!!
The Circle Pads should be inline as they are on the Wii U and Circle Pad Pro.
Nintendo just didn't want to put the money into reconfiguring the 3DS.
Re: Square Enix: Nintendo Works With a 'Different Perspective'
Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 3DS XL
Thanks Robb!
One last comment. Can we please drop the Region Code on the 3DS already!! I wanna play Gundam!!
Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 3DS XL
Oh! And the inside camera should have two lenses so you can take 3D photos/videos with the inside camera!!!
Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo 3DS XL
I want to try it out in a store first, but I don't think I'll be getting one. I don't understand how the xL will be more comfortable. I'll still be playing StarFox 64 awkwardly and painfully because the A button is too far to the right. But I think it will make the L & R buttons easier to use, right now I can only use one or the other.
What I want in a 3DS upgrade:
1.) second thumb pad (the Wii U Gamepad has two)
2.) ergometric (a little ergo would go a long way)
3.) increased resolution, not just stretching (retina anyone?)
4.) more unique color options (I do like the Waluigi-purple used in the Majora's Mask example)
And Nintendo is answering that list with the Wii U Gamepad, so I have that to look forward to.
Re: White Tanooki Mario to The Rescue in New Super Mario Bros. 2
I don't see what some of you are griping about, especially those who have never used White Tanooki. White Tanooki Mario is so much fun!! It was a suit I enjoyed using. I didn't see it as a superior/inferior play; I saw it as a fun easter egg.
