Super Meat Boy creators Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes have been speaking to Eurogamer about their future projects, and have revealed that they would be prepared to work with Nintendo again — with one small caveat.
McMillen: "I want Meat Boy to be in Smash Bros. That would be the one reason I'd really want to develop for a Nintendo console."
Refenes: "That would be amazing! If they could guarantee us Meat Boy would be in Smash Bros., we would do something."
McMillen: "Nintendo are you listening? Smash Bros! We would ask for nothing in return. Just f***ing use the character. Put him in the game. It's free!"
Refenes: "If they wanted Mew-Genics or something and they could promise us Meat Boy would be in the game we'd develop Mew-Genics for them. Not exclusively, of course. This is how they would buy it from us. And that's a very cheap price."
Mew-Genics is Team Meat's latest game, and involves cats. It's coming to the iPad. Super Meat Boy was due to hit WiiWare a few years back but ended up being canned. McMillen has been famously critical of console development, thanks largely to issues relating to a proposed port of Super Meat Boy to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade. He remains cagey about jumping back into console development as a result.
He said to Eurogamer:
You have to take into consideration that when you're independent, you don't want to take the risk of jumping on a platform that you have no idea how it's going to do until it's already established. When you look at WiiWare, when it bloomed when World of Goo came out it was like, 'Holy s***! This is a great platform to develop for,' and then it was like a gold rush and everybody was jumping on WiiWare.
What they should have done was wait a little longer to see if it would continue. Because then it just dropped and nobody cared.
Imagine if we got put in another situation like with Xbox where we were nailed down to this contract of semi-exclusivity and we had to jump through all these hoops and kill ourselves and then pay s***loads of money to get on a platform that's not established yet and then it comes out and doesn't do well - imagine that. That's f***ing horrible.
Despite his aversion to making console games, McMillen says Team Meat is keeping its options open:
If Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft - well, we'll cut off Microsoft at this point - but if Nintendo or Sony came to us and said, 'we have a minimum guarantee of X, Y, Z, we really want you to develop a game for our next system that's coming out in year whatever, if you have something to work on we want to work with you, here's a free kit to develop for us and here's a minimum guarantee or advance,' then we'd be way more inclined to develop for them, but it wouldn't be an exclusive deal. That's an important thing for us.
Would you like to see Team Meat develop for the Wii U eShop? We think we already know the answer to that question, but let us know with a comment regardless.

Make great games but man these guys are annoying
Super Meat Boy isn't even on Wii/Wii U/3DS, so this inclusion would make no sense...
People at that place be smoking that good good I tell ya.
Pfffffff... Pfffffff... Pfffffff... Pfffffff... Pfffffff... Pfffffff...
dressing cats like this is a shame
anyway i never liked super meat boy
it looks kool, i wouldnt mind and i'll probably get it but i wouldn't exactly be praying for it either
Um no thanks. Keep that crap out of Smash Bros!
No.
I wouldn't mind if Meat Boy was in it.
I wonder if they've noticed the indie support going to the Nintendo eShop as of now.
Seriously? Nintendo would never even consider it... meat boy is about as much of a classic character as Ninjabread man
So these guys aren't interested in working with Nintendo unless one of their IPs is glorified in Smash Bros.? Who are they again??
Nice touch with the profanity in the kicker. It really classes up the site.
I wouldn't mind, It'd be pretty cool to see him face off against Mario.
Meat Boy in Smash Bros would make it an insta-buy.
Well, maybe, lol. But I would love to see Super Meat Boy (and Mew-Genics) on the eShop, so make it happen, Nintendo!
@SteveW
NINJA BREAD MAN for the next SSB
It would really only make sense if they put in Commander Video aswell seeing as Meat Boy has only made his appearances on Nintendo consoles through the BIT.TRIP games.
Wow, a lot of negativity towards Team Meat. Personally I love these guys, especially Edmund. I played the crap outta Super Meat Boy and The Basement Collection, They are great developers. I really wish Nintendo would reach out to them, not necessairly for Smash Bros., but to help them get some of their games on WiiU or 3DS. Also, check these guys out in Indie Game: The Movie, they were great to watch.
Super meat boy was ok for a Flash game. The graphics were ugly and the music was bad.
This guy's really full of himself. Indie game was an interesting movie but everyone in it seemed awkward, arrogant or affected by a mental disorder.
What's in it for Nintendo?
I don't see a character that's never been on a Nintendo system getting in SSB. Snake even had a GameCube game in his history and if you to want to dig deeper he had a Game Boy Color game and if you dig really deep I believe he had a NES game. They would need to make Super Meat Boy for Wii U at the minimum for meat boy to get and he would even qualify for a off the wall refrence then even. They are also wrong on the free part. It costs money to make a character in SSB. I also think they would develop for Nintendo if the money was there anyway.
Super Meat Boy is a great game. I'd love stuff like that for the eShop. The gameplay in Isaac was a bit goofy, though. Odd hit boxes and non-satisfying impact in collisions and attacks.
@Hyperstar96 I KNOW you mean Isaac from Golden Sun.
I would love Meat Boy to be in the game, but it is extremely unlikely because Super Meat Boy isn't on a Nintendo platform. Maybe they can port the game to the eShop?
But if Meat Boy does get into the game, I would be very happy about it
Anyway. What a ridiculous proposal. I guess we won't be seeing any Team Meat games on Nintendo consoles. Ever. Because Nintendo won't hand them free advertising by putting their character in perhaps one of the biggest games for the Wii U..
Would I like to see them develop for the Wii U eShop? It might be nice, but I wouldn't be holding my breath for them to actually release anything, no matter how many announcements or news articles are put up. 'Fool me once, shame on you' and all that. :/
as for whether i think Meat Boy will show up in SSBU, I doubt it. he's not a Nintendo character, and furthermore he's never been featured on a Nintendo console, nor does Nintendo apparently have any kind of hold over the studio or the character (e.g. they had a hold on Sega, therefore Sonic was good to go).
That's not the way to go, too arrogant for my taste "put meat boy in Smash Bros, give us a free dev kit and then we'll see"? Since there isn't a direct translation I'll say it in spanish: gilipollas.
They are haters or trollers.
I feel sarcasm from these guys. xD
Mmm... i don't think that using an F-bomb goes down well in Kyoto.
Super Meat Boy was a great game, I liked it so much that I even ordered two signed Meat Boy comic books from America... but this is a little arrogant. "We would ask for nothing in return! Put him in the game. It's free!" sounds as if he thinks that Nintendo should be honoured at the possibility of having Meat Boy in Smash Bros :/
@DePapier At least I hope he meant xD
Back to the topic, yeah, they sound like douchebags. I don't know if they meant something else but I doubt it.
Anyway, if Big N keeps Super Meat Boy away from Smash Bros and brings new characters like Chrom and Lucina from Fire Emblem: Awakening, I'd highly prefer it.
No, had haven't had any Nintendo games. However, I hope Commander Video will be in it. He has (all I believe) games on Nintendo systems. I just remembered that because Meat Boy is in the game
@Five-seveN Ike is a must, of course xD
im pretty surprised i really expected all these comments to be for the idea lol really glad most of them are against it, meat boy isnt even close to being worthy of being in smash bros
ummm, ok, while we are doing it let's add duke nukem, guy from minecraft, spiderman...why add some charater that's never been on a nintendo system? (except being on bit trip on the 3ds as a little easter egg)
I seem to have survived this far in life without playing this meat boy whatever I can probably continue further without the need to
@Five-seveN I've only played two of them, which would be "Sacred Stones" (GBA) and, of course "Awakening" (3DS, but everybody probably knows xD), but I've first met Ike because of Super Smash Bros Brawl and it didn't take long for him to become my favorite as well.
Why would they add a crappy character (imo) when they can add someone like Professor Layton (with his swordsmanship) for example?
Is it just me or does this guy come across as kind of naive and arrogant?
@SteveW I don't think you realize how amazing that would be. Clunky jumps, awkward wand, flimsy ninja stars and a final smash involving f***ing up the camera for 1 minute or so.
C'mon this seems ridiculous. I really wanted Super Meat Boy for Wiiware and it was an amazing game but other than that, what's makes them think that the character deserves to be put in Super Smash Bros? I don't blame the company for canning the Wiiware version but because it was, Nintendo or it's fans don't have any affinity to the character. Start making games for Nintendo platforms, get popular and then start making demands.
I'm with those that would say "no" to Meat Boy in SSB. While I think the character has a lot of charm, he's never been on a Nintendo platform. Also, I rather think Nintendo fans who would BUY SSB would in many instances feel burned by having Meat Boy in there...since these guys hyped the heck out of Super Meat Boy for WiiWare...then said "whoops...no...its not going to be exclusive after all!"...then just up and trashed the WiiWare version altogether after getting us excited for it. It left a really bad taste in my mouth for these guys at that time. I also think their attitude about developing for Nintendo/Sony sounds a bit arrogant: "Give us free stuff (development kits)...here's a bonus just for making a game for us...oh and here's another bonus minimum amount of revenue you'll get from us whether your game sells or not!" I don't think so. If they were a big, well-established development house like EA of Ubisoft...sure...they could maybe work something like that out with Nintendo/Sony. But coming from a small Indie developer who already burned Nintendo once on a game? No thanks!
http://www.notefromlapland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/q-icon-no.gif
Super Meat Boy needs to be on the Wii U eShop.
lol. Who do they think they are making claims like this? Ha!
I am still mad that they put Sonic and Snake in the last Smash Brothers. This would just be a disgrace.
Sooooo.... why do think this should happen, Team Meat? That's like having Master Chief in the next Smash, he's not a Nintendo character, nor has he ever been on a Nintendo system. They think they've made the unbeatble deal, and really, that's not the case. Without Team Meat, the Wii U eShop is still going to prosper anyway.
I'd rather have Isaac than Meat Boy. But as others have said, the inclusion of a character that's never been on a Nintendo console is completely unwarranted.
No, Team Meat. Go home. No Smash for you.
NO! You and your vulgar mouth and offensive game can stay out of Smash Bros. (and the eShop), thank you very much. I'd actually prefer Sonic in Smash Bros. over that...
Not going to happen, not should it. Besides, it would be pretty difficult to find people in Japan who even know what Super Meat Boy is, let alone have played it.
@Jaz007
By free, they meant the license to the character, but yeah; they're out of their minds.
@MasterWario Good job because he already is
No thanks. It's not like Team Meat not working with Nintendo is a loss anyway.
As much as I would love for them to bring Super Meat Boy to the eShop, my answer is still no.
I watched that movie that they were in and I didn't care for them at all. To me, they just acted like the world owed them something and now they made some decent games and think they are Indie Rockstars.
They sound like a buncha cocky kittens. Eshop is now super indie friendly, they'd know that if they pulled heads from hindquarters...
I rather have game characters that are on Nintendo systems in the game. And even if they had a game on the eshop, and somehow nintendo thought these arrogant guys deserved a character slot over some character when know, what would he do? Bleed and jump? Smash bros is not gory, so no team meat your character never going to be in this game. Super meat boy though was good though on xbl.
@Five-seveN That is a much better proposition; didn't Bit.Trip start on Wiiware?
He's essentially saying "If you put meat boy in Smash Bros, we'll develop for your hardware. Other than that, no dice."
Arrogance at its tipping point.
Even though this will never happen, I'd love to play as him.
as much as I love super meet boy, I don't see the point of that character on smash bros U/3D. I also don't see the point of Nintendo giving money for them, to develop for WiiU eshop, because it's self-publish and they can price it whatever they want.
I'm just having a hard time digesting the fact that these guys are being serious. O_o How did they make it this far as indie developers? Indie games are all about risks while doing what you love! You have to sell your game, not have publishers come to you and hand you money for your 'service'.
Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac were good enough games but these two really need to get off their high horse.
yeah i say no as well forget them they could easily add another good character that gamers wants
Shantae from Shantae's Risky Revenge, Max from Mutant Mudds, and Quote from Cave Story are better characters to be included in the next Smash Bros. than this Meat Boy character. I mean c'mon Meat Boy doesn't even had any games on a Nintendo systems at all, both physical and/or digitally. They could had just release Super Meat Boy as a full fledge 3DS or Wii physical game and it would be alright but why add a 3rd party character that nobody's gonna be excited about when that character had no current Nintendo console appearance at all? If they want they could had just easily ask Sony for Meat Boy's inclusion in the next PS All-Stars BR instead.
They censored Snake in brawl, so he didnt use "obtainable" weapons, and now, they want Nintendo to include a blood soaked, blood spilling piece of grinning meat ? Do the math guys...
Also, Super Meat Boy may be a fine game, but the character itself is anything but "iconic". With that attitude, i guess youll never work with Nintendo
what the hell is going on in that picture????
fat dude with tattoos, in what looks like a smokey room with cats..... cats that have little dresses on??? nintendo life, i take it you chose the worst possible picture of this person for a reason???
.....so dude is literally grandma's boy? that was just a movie man, sheesh.
also, super meat boy is lame.
Their sense of entitlement is funny
Why are so many of these indie devs self-righteous kittens? Seriously.
I personally feel that super meat boy has no place in Super Smash Bros. It just wouldn't blend together with Nintendo characters well. That being said, I really enjoyed Super Meat Boy but I can't help feeling this guy has an attitude problem.
All I really want is Super Meat Boy to play on my Wii U with the Pro Controller. Apparently that's too much to ask. But I'd pay fifty bucks for that!
"Put Meat Boy in Smash Bros. and we MIGHT port a game unrelated to Super Meat Boy to the eShop, ignoring the fact that Nintendo fans STILL want Super Meat Boy."
q[o84 t'huropierqpqreprepuiop'qtpermeqnhionxc,v
Sorry, that was my face hitting my keyboard in despair.
Aren't these guys a bit arrogant? They may be good developers but they aren't big enough to make console makers desperate to get them to develop for their console.
This sounds more like a fanboy plea to have a character put into one of the greatest games that'll come to Wii U/3DS. So unprofessional...
@ WingedFish:
That's EXACTLY what it sounds like.
Sounds like money and success has went to their heads a little.
Why would Nintendo ever decide to basically "buy" you, or specifically "promote" your product in their game, just to get one of your on their platform?
It's not like you're Square/Enix, Take Two, Capcom, Konami, EA, Activision or some company like that. Where it really would be vitally important to get most of those companies big games on the system imo.
You're just a little indie developer, well maybe not so "little" now in terms of wealth etc, with a couple of cool games.
Get your games on as much systems as possible and let all the gamers enjoy them while you enjoy the riches that comes with such success.
Demanding aren't they? I think they're forgetting their place a little here. SMB's success must have gone to their heads.
I think meat boy's pretty awesome but it being in ssb4? I dunno...and wouldnt the character roster be near done by now?
I guess they forgot their games don't start with MINECRAFT or ANGRY BIRDS.... Seriously, good luck with a free dev kit and other special royalties...
No offense Team Meat, but I think you better port Super Meat Boy to the Wii U and 3DS before you ask Nintendo to put the character himself in a Smash Bros. game.
Wow what arrogant jerks. Now even if Super Meat Boy would come to Wii U I wouldnt get it just to irk them. Seriously who do these guys think they are that they can just make demands like this. So whats next are you going to demand that Pepsi puts Meat Boy on their cans or Mc Donalds come out with the Meat Boy Burger?
Seriously? I mean, seriously? After they promised Meat Boy to Nintendo fans, only to develop it in a way that they couldn't give it to them, they want the game's main character to be in one of Nintendo's biggest franchises? Why would Nintendo even consider putting what amounts to a 360 game's hero in Smash Bros? And why is it everything this company says only seems to make me dislike them more?
Hahahahaha, if they had pitty on them, they'd give it an assist trophy, not thatit deserves it. The only non-nintendo characters on the game have been Sonic and Snake, and Meat Boy is nowhere near them, not to say there's no game of his on Nintendo platforms.
Why would Nintendo want a cheap Mario ripoff in Smash? That's stupid.
Put in meatboy as an assist trophy. Don't do it as a main character. F that.
Team Meat have egos comparable to that of Axl Rose. They made 1 good game that got a lot of publicity and they think they're world class devs. There is a list the longer than Russia is wide with characters that would be more deserving and fit better into smash bros before meat boy makes the list.
From what I know Super Meat Boy has little story, good platforming elements, and is just plain weird. HE'LL FIT RIGHT IN WITH MARIO
@Tasuki No, they're saying you advertise us, we'll support your platform. Not demands, a trade.
@Kirk Companies often due things to get 3rd party games on their systems. Minecraft on Xbox was partially developed by Microsoft.
@SkywardLink98: Its not a trade. Anytime someone says "You give me what I want, and I'll CONSIDER doing something for you." with no definitive answer, that's a demand. In their own words from the last paragraph here:
If Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft - well, we'll cut off Microsoft at this point - but if Nintendo or Sony came to us and said, 'we have a minimum guarantee of X, Y, Z, we really want you to develop a game for our next system that's coming out in year whatever, if you have something to work on we want to work with you, here's a free kit to develop for us and here's a minimum guarantee or advance,' then we'd be way more inclined to develop for them, but it wouldn't be an exclusive deal. That's an important thing for us.
The key is "we'd be way more inclined". That's not saying "You give us what we want, and we WILL develop a game for you." That's saying "gimmee...and I'll think about it!" That is arrogance on a plate.
@Knux Snake had never appeared on a nintendo console but he got into Brawl. why not meat boy?
@MrMario02: regarding Snake — when Brawl hit, MGS: The Twin Snakes had been on GC already.
@CaptainAmerica5 Digimon is coming to 3DS in japan. so why not?
Team Meat hasn't been successful enough for them to make any demands of any of the big 3. If they want to develop for any of those platforms, they can do it like any of the other indie devs. No one is going to guarantee them anything, though.
Your slab of meat isn't worthy, sorry.
They're clearly taking piss, they KNOW meat boy will not be in smash bros. Their attitude makes me not want to play any of their games....
I don't think it could work. Including Meat Boy in Smash Bros. would likely push the rating up to Mature, which I can't see Nintendo letting happen to a franchise like Smash Bros.
My suggestion to Team Meat is to step up and put Super Meat Boy on the Wii U eShop BEFORE giving Nintendo an ultimatum about supporting their consoles. While I can understand Edmund's critical views of Microsoft and their restrictions, it's a bit ballsy to say "give me a free development kit and we'll consider making a non exclusive game IF you put our character in your game". According to many indie developers, Nintendo has made it VERY easy to put their games on the Wii U so why not throw your game on the service and then request Meat Boy's inclusion on the next Smash Bros. considering you really want him in the game for the exposure above all else.
@MrMario02 Let's see, Snake was in:
-Metal Gear (NES)
-Snakes Revenge (NES)
-Metal Gear Solid (Game Boy Color)
-MGS: The Twin Snakes (Gamecube)
I would say it was fair to include him in Brawl considering his legacy on Nintendo platforms (It's no secret that more people know about the original Metal Gear due to the NES version). Same thing with Sonic from Sega considering how Sonic has literally invaded Nintendo consoles since the Gamecube era when Sega went 3rd party.
I have to say, that after following them for quite some time, I think they are joking.
@Highlar
"promise us Meat Boy would be in the game we'd develop Mew-Genics for them."
Sounds like a trade to me.
If it had actually been on a Nintendo System then maybe as a trophy. If they were thinking as a playable character.... lol
@Punky - Agree entirely. Even though they may be joking (Although if they were that would imply that they don't actually want Meat Boy in SSB - which obviously isn't true) their massive egos are still glaringly obvious.
Is this an ego thing, a joke, or just being totally disillusioned?
McMillen/Team Meat means nothing to Nintendo. They have done very little worth playing, period. I've given benefit of the doubt multiple times playing their games and coming away disappointed each time. Why do they deserve a cameo in a Nintendo-specific game that is considered one of the flagpole releases of the console? Of course they would accept that massive bit of free promotion - just like they regularly use silly quotes on Nintendo fansites for cheap promotion already despite never even offering a game on a Nintendo platform.
You'd think people would smarten up and stop giving these guys free press. Guess not.
Anger against the Meat Team is justified. I mean, it's a group that isn't supporting Nintendo currently, but here they come out with a demand that if Meat Boy isn't in the next Smash, then they won't develop on Nintendo platforms. Sorry, but that makes me hate them, no matter their popularity.
If you want something to happen, then at least meet half-way.
These guys really are annoying.
I don't see how you could go straight from not supporting Nintendo to having one of your characters in the biggest celebration of Nintendo.
I don't think not having Super Meat Boy is that big a loss for Nintendo....there's already been a lot of indie support appearing for Nintendo in the last while, it's better they don't give in to silly demands like this.
Well isn't that a cocky thing to demand. >:0
@WaveBoy
why does it make him look less professional?
Why would they put a character that's never appeared on a Nintendo console before in Smash Bros.?
i think they are tooting their horns too much. i've played meatboy and isaac for free on newgrounds and neither are "classic." hopefully, they are joking cause arrogance doesn't look well on them.
@Punky: Agreed. I love Super Meat Boy, it's one of my favourite games, but I wish they wouldn't act like that
I despise Team Meat. They are the most immature developers on the planet and seem to think that dropping an F-bomb every other sentance makes them cool.
I have never played the game but from what I can see the developers are very full of themselves and do not understand that Nintendo will not put them in the game if they have not made one game for the 3DS, Wii or Wii U (even though they were going to for the Wii).
Super Meat Boy's a great game, but McMillen is as immature as his games and thinks far too highly of himself.
It's not going to happen and I'm perfectly fine with that. It wouldn't even make sense to have Meat Boy in the game.
Only if Nintendo gives them a free dev kit & money up front (or at least some guarantee of monies) would they consider developing for Nintendo but no exclusive? Give me a break! They ain't worth the effort Nintendo.
I'm a big fan of Edmund McMillen and Team Meat so I would be one happy panda if they did any work at all with Nintendo. I know there's almost no chance of that happening though.
I can't believe all of the hate on this page. I swear that anything or anyone that isn't related to Nintendo just gets trashed by the users on this site. It's pretty sad to be honest.
@WesCash
Er no. Not at all. I am someone who has super meat boy and I find it a "Good" game, but meat boy does not belong in SSB at all and if they did want to go the path of putting in a lot of 3rd party characters (Which I wouldnt mind really), meat boy wouldnt be anywhere near the top on the list. Characters like Sora, Snake, Layton, Ace Attorney all take precendence to name a few.
I just dont like their attitude either. It obviously seems they dont care so much for making a game for Nintendo, so why should nintendo basically pay them to do so. Either make a game for nintendo because you want to or dont. I just find it really cheeky to ask for that while they havent give anything back yet.
@Tech101 What do you mean "Crap"?
It's not going to happen. Meat Boy doesn't have any games for Nintendo consoles. I doubt even if his game was on the Wii U or 3DS that he'd be in the game. Also, what would his attacks be? All he does in Super Meat Boy is run and jump around. He wouldn't even make a good assist trophy.
I agree with anybody that said Commader Video should make an appearance. His games are on Nintendo consoles, plus they could have attacks for him.
indiehipsterego 101
but I don't want him to get punched in the throat like Phil Fish so there's that.
I don't even know anything about Super Meat Boy or these guys, but I can tell the hate here is ridiculous. Anyways, as I said I don't kow anything but what Meat Boy looks like, I couldn't care less of he was in Smash Bros. or not. More the merrier, IMO. It wouldn't make sense, though.
Uh, no thanks. I wouldn't buy a Smash Bros game that included Team Meat characters. I hereby order that Team Meat shall stay 100 metres away from Nintendo at all times.
It seems to me that everyone here doesn't realize that they're joking.
I love Super Meat Boy, but I can't see the character working in SSB, it just doesn't fit. At all.
Not wanting to take away from the developers, but I would hate seeing SSB being transformed into a Sony Allstar lookalike with tons of mismatched characters that don't have enough charm to have people care about them.
NO
I have a better chance winning the lottery every month for the rest of my life and being the first person to land on Mars than having Meat Boy show up in Smash Bros.
Okay, put him in Smash Bros., but put him behind a stage, or in a place where no one will ever see him. As long as he's in the game, we can have Super Meat Boy on the eShop.
Yeah, they're clearly having a laugh in that exchange people. Did everyone's sarcasm detectors break or something?? I can see where McMillen's coming from though. They don't want to be tied down to exclusivity, because if their game bombs on that system they're sort of stuck in a bad situation. They want the game to be made available to as big an audience as possible to drive sales, which is perfectly reasonable.
Problem is, expecting Nintendo to placate them and give them an advance to develop a 'multi-platform' title is a bit of wishful thinking. But really, Nintendo should be doing everything they can to placate UbiSoft, because they're the only major western publisher to (mostly) properly support the console (apart from Warner Bros. perhaps).
Having said that, overhead costs are a huge barrier to indie development on consoles. Perhaps Nintendo could look into courting indies like Team Meat with a good track record of producing great games, and reducing the costs associated with getting the game on the system...because it looks as though a lot of indies are shying away from XBox and even Sony. Not necessarily going after exclusivity, but doing a deal so good that they won't want to go on XBox/PS4 anyway (much like what Steam is doing).... Nintendo could make the jump and get an edge on those two...and go after some of the top indie developers, and do what the competition aren't prepared to do in order to get the best indie games on the Wii U.
I'd rather have that guy's cat as a playable character.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Did anyone see Indie Game: The Movie? That mivie was great and he was in it I believe!
Puking
Demandy much? And that wasn't exactly professional demeanor. Yeah, no, pass.
I don't care if he was joking. It doesn't make his games better or his ego any less overbearing. At least he's no Phil Fish.
YES PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!
Eh.
So essentially, for Meat Boy stuff Nintendo has to show that they want Meat Boy on the console? That seems kinda conceited, especially with a company who has no real obligation or otherwise to do so. I like their games, but this seems kinda silly.
This just reinforced my reasoning for not liking this developer. They are unprofessional and juvenile. What are they, a group of 15 year old's sitting around their computers eating potato chips and drinking soda while watching South Park and bad mouthing each other? These guys are hecklers, they're just being smart-asses and their whole demeanor is a facade just so they can stand out in the industry and appeal to the very demographic they portray themselves as. Keep their stupid character out of Smash Bros. Nintendo wouldn't be dumb enough to include a character so un-renown and that has (thankfully) never appeared on their platforms.
Smash Bros. is meant to be Nintendo characters ONLY! I hated having WONDERFUL characters, such as Snake and Sonic, that WEREN'T from Nintendo in Smash Bros., so Super Meat Boy would suck.
some of you need a sense of huuuuuuuumoor.
Wow. Who do these guys think they are? o.o
Lolololololol
OK, Meat Boy had a cameo in BIT.TRIP and Retro City Rampage, but that's it for Nintendo consoles.
As for Non-Nintendo characters only 2 were ever used: Solid Snake was in 4 Nintendo games, Sonic in more than 40. Both are videogame icons.
As for Meat Boy I can think of many worthier characters and it would be a bloody mess seeing 4 boys colouring each stage red. Well, actually, that could be quite fun.
But Team Meat's attitude is so wrong, so * it.
A better idea would be a Wii U eShop indie fighter, combined forces with all the indie heroes: Jett Rocket, Lemeza (La-Mulana), Commander Video (BIT.TRIP), Patricia (Mighty Switch Force!), Toku (LostWinds), Toki Tori, the Player from Retro City, the Pyroboy from Little Inferno, the Two Brothers and other new characters of soon to be released Wii U eShop games, the 3 heroes from Trine, Max from Epic Quest (or even from Max & the Magic Marker), hot Celia from Anima Ark of Sinners and sexy Nyx from NyxQuest, Quote (Cave Story), a Toribash fighter, a MotoHeroz driver, Meat Boy, Minecraft-blockhead with a pickaxe, etc. etc. etc.
I'd buy that game.
So they want Nintendo to put their character in a game staring iconic (and mostly 1st party) video game characters or at least appeared on Nintendo consoles at some point, guaranteed sales, free dev kits, and possibly an advance payment? How arrogant, they act as if they're doing Nintendo a favor. I wonder if they realize this is the sort of behavior that would cause an employer to to tell you to just get out, and possibly laughed out of the office.
Meat Boy wouldn't even fit in with the rest of the cast anyway, at least Snake comes from a series with a very cheesy-B feel. Besides, Nintendo holds their franchises to rather high standards and SSB is like the VIP club of video games.
So they want Nintendo to supply them with a free dev kit, some money as a bare minimum if their game doesn't sell, and expect their character to be in a Nintendo franchise, and even then not promise some kind of exclusivity? What?
Why on earth would we (the fans) even want MeatBoy in SSB4?
@TheAdza: The don't ask for much, do they?
Personally, I don't care to see this Meat Boy make an appearance in Smash Bros. If Nintendo were to include another 3rd party character, I'd expect either another Metal Gear Solid character, another Sonic character (which is what I'm hoping for), or another one yet like Mega Man.
Maybe this kind of demand would make sense if it were a popular character like Bomberman, Rayman, Megaman, or Simon Belmont, but this is just a nobody. The game won't be remembered in 10 years, it's not iconic and it's not even that popular. Sure it's a decent game, but keep it away from smash bros unless they make at least 1 exclusive nintendo game.
@LAA
Oh I agree that Meat Boy certainly doesn't belong in SSB. That's not the issue. He was clearly joking and I can't believe anyone here took the comment seriously. As @Retro_on_theGo said, people need a sense of humour.
@moo99 LOL! Totally agree with you on the Indie Game movie! I bought the movie on iTunes thinking it was going to be more "behind the scenes" on how games are made, but it was actually a drama-filled "documentary" of Walmartians with awful facial hair who develop games. And what was up with showing the Insulin shots? WTH was that all about??
The answer is no for me. After all the hype and hoopla for a flash game that was popular at the time and then the promise that it would come to WiiWare was instantly crushed. Sure, you can spread the blame to both the developers and Nintendo but to demand Meat Boy to be in the next Smash game AND hint at suggesting Nintendo license the character while having the most arrogant attitude will NOT get you anywhere. The last time I checked, there definitely WASN't any humor from those demands.
@TreonsRealm
You forgot Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D on 3DS.
@retro_player_22
Which released nearly four years after Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
I played super meat boy on the 360. the game was very fun. reminiscent of mario.
it would be cool to see the character in super smash. and if it's free. you'd be stupid not to. team meat obviously really wants to work with nintendo. i say do it. why not? it's free
Frankly, if Super Meat Boy is coming, then why not the protagonists from those PETA Nintendoo parodies? After all, Pokémon Black & Blue got a lot more of response than their previous games, so they would be on equal level with Meat Boy.
Seriously, I am surprised that people are turning from Meat Boy here. I remember when I was essentially the only one who disliked him because he came from Newgrounds...
Also, about 'free,' I think that they were saying that 'You don't have to pay us for the right to use Meat Boy in the next Super Smash Bros!' After all, they would get free advertisement on the same level that Fire Emblem did on SSB2!
Sigh
I guess the closest I'll ever be to having Super Meat Boy on a Nintendo console is through the Virtual Meat Boy arcade game in Retro City Rampage...
@retro_player_22
Uh Sony is no longer working with Superbot Entertainment their contact ended.
Sony Santa Monica is doing the DLC with Superbot Entertainment.
Which will make things a lot harder.
Then again. Many devs do not like All-Stars such as Platinum Games.
"Sure, you'll team up with Master Chief and Kratos on SSB, please, PLEASE develop for us!"
Please give us Super Meat Boy NOW to WiiU/3DS eshop it would be great and why not in SSBB where is the problem? Go ask Nintendo
Why do they want Meat boy to SSB?
He sounded pretty arrogant! It almost sounded like black-mailing!
They do a couple of of hits and they think they are in any position to tell Nintendo what to do?
Everyone in these comments seems to be looking at this situation really backwards. It would cost nintendo a ton of money to get the rights to use an IP they don't already own, so offering Super Meat Boy, one of the biggest indie game characters of all time, for free seems like a pretty good deal.
Developing a game for Wii U or 3DS also makes Nintendo a lot of money, so asking them for a dev kit for free isn't ridiculous.
I would agree that Super Meat Boy shouldn't be in the game until the game is at least on a Nintendo console, but there are a lot of people in these comments saying he doesn't "deserve to be in Super Smash Bros.". Have you played the game? IT KICKS ASS. The quirky art style, subtle references, excellent controls and fantastic level design all work together to create one of the best platformers in years.
I can see how this could seem arrogant, but remember this is through an interview with Eurogamer, it's not an official proposal to Nintendo.
Seriously these guys are great people who make great games.
@BennyFresh
The game is great but so are many other games out there too and their own unique mascot, Mega Man, Rayman, Shantae, Klonoa, and Bomberman are more deserving to be guest starring in Smash Bros. than Meat Boy. Meat Boy needs to build up his success on a Nintendo platform before he would actually got a chance to be in a Smash Bros. title. Putting Meat Boy in the next Smash Bros. is like putting an active TNA star to main event the next WWE WrestleMania PPV, it'll likely be pointless considering Meat Boy won't have a game at all to represent himself in Smash Bros. and no Nintendo player would be familiar with the little guy consider the team won't even gonna bother releasing any Meat Boy game at all even if he's was in the next Smash Bros. anyways. That's like having TNA star Abyss main event the next WrestleMania for just that night despite he had no history with WWE at all. It's just pointless. It's like they just want to hog the spotlight away from many of the more successful mascots.
@BennyFresh Except that putting a character into a game isn't free. Besides that, they likely already have most if not all of the cast already decided so adding more wouldn't work out.
@retro_player_22 @Zombie_Barioth
Those are both legitimate points. I don't necessarily think he deserves to be in the game MORE than other characters. Simon Belmont is perfect for smash bros. and the Castlevania games have been closely tied with Nintendo since the 80's.
I really just meant that these guys don't deserve all the hate the people in these comments are giving them.
well now I just look stupid, I guess you can't reply to two people like that...
Haha, I say Nintendo teases them and says they will add him in the next smash bros, shows a bunch of clips of him fighting, and sends cool screenshots, then says sorry, theres not enough interest in your 2009 character, try again next year!
Sorry but I'm pretty sour about all the teasers that lead to nothing. maybe the reason WiiWare failed to do as well as it could have is because developers expected garbage games to sell on a new service. Momentum dropped because developers initiative dropped.
Heres hoping for better luck with Wii U's eshop.
Nintendo,You continue to amaze me. Literally.
I mean,KEEP HIM OUT OF SMASH BROS.!
(I never liked Meat Boy anyway. >.<)
@Lopezdm I'm sorry, but someone taking an Insulin shot - something that is necessary for him to...y'know...go on living - is not in any way gross.
Anyway, lots of hate for Super Meat Boy and the team on here. Not entirely sure why, since the game was a lot of fun and easily one of the best games available on Xbox Live Arcade - and one of the most successful, suggesting that it is actually quite good.
And don't worry about your Smash Bros. lineup, since the developers have confirmed on Twitter that they were only joking about putting the character in the game in exchange for a port. Some people appear to be somewhat confused, thinking that Nintendo have said that it's happening. Nintendo aren't even aware of the conversation, I imagine.
Reading the text of the story is somewhat important, in these cases.
I've loved the super meat boy team ever since Indie Game The Movie, it may be a bit pretentious to say they'd work with Nintendo only if meat boy was in Smash but my guess is they were probably half kidding and will eventually work with Nintendo. PS it's not cool to talk negatively about small game shops they work hard to bring us unique IPs.
I like Super Meat Boy, but not enough for him to be considered for the next Smash Bros. Guess that's a more substantial response than just "Eh." lol
Super Meat Boy is one of my favourite games but that is a ridiculous demand to make. Either make the game for WII or don't (please do! ) but this isn't on Nintendo for it not being ported over.
Blackmail much?
AW COME ON!!! Meat Boy is the ONLY good game micropenis has ever had! And for the record, when there was that vote for a new character in Smash Brothers, my vote was Meat Boy! So come on and port it guy, and if it is ported then he will definitely be the new Smash character, so . . .
That said, Team Meat are acting like 5 year-olds here. So I guess if it comes to Wii U I'd be happy, but if not, I'd understand that they can't man up.
