Nintendo has confirmed that Fire Emblem: Awakening has enjoyed the best first month sales in the entire history of the franchise, shifting 180,000 units since its launch on February 4th. Impressively, around 63,000 of that total was downloaded via the 3DS eShop.
In contrast, the game's handheld predecessor — Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon — has only sold 250,000 copies since it hit the market in 2009.
In our Fire Emblem: Awakening review, we said that the game's "masterful tightrope walk between luring in curious onlookers and appealing to the hardest of cores is a sight to behold". It's rather good.
Did you pick up a copy? If so, was it a physical or download version? Leave a comment to let us know.

Good news, glad they aren't like EA though, they pretty much cancel anything that sells under a million.
I picked it up (physical), and have started it, but I am focused on Etrian Odysey IV atm. From what I've played it's gonna be great to play. Plus I am really glad they have the casual mode, my son get's frustrated w/ the permadeath thing, and now I don't have to hear his frustraions about it.
Heck yeah I picked up a copy, and if Street Pass is any indication so has the majority of 3DS owners in my area. I love it, it's my favorite in the series, so of course it deserves all the success in the world. So happy to see the game become a success!
I'm having alot of fun with Fire Emblem Awakening. Too bad I killed so many soldiers.
Go the box copy, had enjoy it nonstop since. Planning to get SMT4 & Soul Hacker soon and is now awaiting Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem revelation at E3 2013 as well.
I bet it pales in comparison to sales in Japan.
The problem with all previous Fire Emblems is the tiny production runs. You say the DS game only shifted 250,000 in its lifetime but it was nearly impossible to find new just a few months after release. It couldn't sell over 250,000 if Nintendo didn't make over 250,000.
Hopefully with Awakening available digitally, there's nothing to halt the sales of it and it will keep selling steadily as the 3DS userbase grows
Poor sales for Wii U again though.
@SethNintendo
It will arrive in Europe in April 19th and then it will reach 1 million!
I'll buy it in the physical version in April when it swings my way haha
@andreoni79 I wish Australia was getting the Limited Edition XL. I really wanted it but it doesn't look like it's coming to our shores. I'll pick up the game regardless.
Still waiting on EU release...
First want to play a demo, not sure I like to play a game with a lot of story in it like this.
And two weeks later I go on a holiday for a month and when I come back there is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and shortly after that Animal Crossing. I don't even have time to play it
I wish Nintendo was that active for the Wii U also.
I downloaded it...
Good stuff, hopefully that will encourage them to localise more in the future. I'm still annoyed that FE 12 never got localised and we had to rely on fan translations and flash cards to play it.
@Peach64 Wii U sales were actually up 40% over January....which is a bit nuts considering no games were released. Hopefully it's the start of the inevitable recovery
I don't have a 3DS yet, can't decide between XL or regular. I'd like a black one but NA doesn't exactly have the best color selection :-/ Definitely picking this up when I do get one though.
Take a XL. I had a regular one and changed when the XL was released. Never wanna go back to a regular one now
Bought it for 39.99, played it for two weeks, enjoyed it, then sold it on eBay for $57 after starting the auction at $30. Thank god I didn't download it instead!
Got a physical copy had a little trouble tracking one down its sold out at the retailers in my area , LOVE IT the game is a MASTERPIECE !
I had its day one but I was one that actually wanted to download it. Excellent game but I've yet to really jump into it due to the Hugh amount of games I want this year. When I do get back to it it will be a treat for sure. Love me some strategy!!
@AbeVigoda Don't you wish every game could be like that! However that's one sale Nintendo lost because of the shortage. Not everyone wants to dl and will wait or pay for physical and obviously pay more. I'm sure it wasn't the only one sold on various sites either.
@Tech101
I'm using the money from that to buy Monster Hunter 3, so it will still end up in Nintendo's pocket haha
I'm going get it once it makes its way to europe.
@WiiLovePeace you will miss out on spotpass dlc
@waterlava How's is he going to miss out. It's not even out in his region yet.
I want the physical copy, but I have to be honest, I'm very tempted to go digital for this one. I love the box art etc but with the digital version I need never be without it! No more carrying the cartridge around!
These sales are hardly surprising. I bought a physical copy to save space on my SD card.
Looked long and hard, finally found a physical copy after 2 weeks. Already put 60+ hours into it. It's the BEST game on the 3DS. The amount of polish is amazing.
I downloaded it. The same as ever other 3DS game I own that has that option.
Europe still has a month to go until Awakening releases there? I wouldn't be able to wait that long if I lived there. Bought the physical copy a day after launch since GameStop got their shipment in late.
Physical; preordered it in December.
eShop version for me (being in Europe with a Canadian 3DS has its challenges...)
It doesn't suprise me it is the best game on the 3DS. I downloaded it in order to get it at midnight
Still haven't played this... I expect to by April, however.
Great game. So worth the money.
And I would get Shadow Dragon or another Fire Emblem game if they didn't make them so freaking hard to find. I'm not paying 50 bucks minimum for a DS game at this point.
Loved it. Just beat it yesterday by training nobody but Chrom. XD
Got downloaded version since my amazon preorder took so long to ship. (It was worth it)
Best game on 3DS. Easily.
I don't have this game.
Downloaded it and love it. I play it almost every day. Essential game for every 3DS owner.
I got a physical copy, this is the first FE game I've ever played, I'm loving it.
I downloaded only because someone was buying it for me, as a payment for some work I did, and had to go digital, because it was sold out at retail.
But this is a game I want downloaded, as I will never sell it, and its so addicting
I'm sure that number would've been greater if there hadn't been a shortage of physical copies — i do hope they consider a second run, it'd probably sell out everywhere too. I bought two physical copies, one for my hubby and one for myself (we had been sharing the one physical copy, but i had been wanting more than one save file to myself and Wal-Mart had one copy in stock a couple weeks after it came out, so... :3)
I picked up my copy on eShop when the physical copies were unavailable at my local Gamestop. Best decision I ever made. It's the first FE game I've played and I can't get enough.
Great news! Fire Emblem needs some love here in the states!
@Lan As far as I remember dead space 3 (I guess this is the main game you are talking about) needed to sell 4 million to break even. When you only sell 1 million, you loose a poopiedoodledingdongston of money. That's just the way it works. Nintendo does the same, but fire emblem doesn't cost that much to make.
I bought the physical copy, though I did toy with the idea of downloading this one since I knew I wouldn't resell it and it would be convenient to have right on my system. I wound up going with the physical copy because of the pre-order bonus I got.
It's also the best 3DS game I've played so far. I've put in a lot of hours into the game already and with all the additional content still coming I don't see my play time slowing down any time soon. Love everything about the game.
I'm not too suprised considering the amount of advertising the game got, plus that it lent a helping hand to newcomers while still appealing to veterans of the series. But all the same, nice to see FE get more publicity.
I had to download. Great game, I like other Fire Emblem games but this has to be the best one.
Got the DL, since I'm overseas.
See there, Nintendo? Other countries LIKE Fire Emblem. Now how about making like Square and giving us the ENTIRE series.
No retailer near me in my location, so I bought digital copy. Loving the game so far.
Would prefer a physical copy, but was late to the game so to speak and couldn't find one locally. Ended up getting the download. Awesome game, great use of DLCs and bonus content too.
Fire Emblem: Awakening was the first game I bought for my new 3DS XL. I got it from the eShop because I don't like futzing with cartridges and I only buy games I know I'll want to replay in the future (so I don't sell them). I've played through Dragon Quest IX on my old DS Lite at least three times (maybe four). Same for Rune Factory 3. Worth buying, worth keeping (and vice versa).
fire emblem is one of those game series with a not so small but dedicated following of fans outside of japan and it was only a matter of time for a F.E game to be a success, sales-wise. thankfully, awakening is that game that has made it happen. looking forward to it next month, and with this current set of characters, it would be nice if the next F.E entry was based around chrom, lucina etc and is a follow-up to awakening but for the wii U.
Totally picked up a physical copy, though had to wait a week for Amazon to finally ship it to me...totally worth it for the artwork on the cart (and the great game of course)
Hoping sales get even better. Don't want to have another game skip us if it turns out bad sales were a problem. (We missed New Mystery of the Emblem Heroes of Light and Shadow for DS, a.k.a. FE12.)
Downloaded my copy of it, my first fire emblem game besides the ambassador one which I never played till now, it's a really awesome game series! I've talked my friends into getting it too
I still can't find a copy of this game anywhere. Looks like I'm going to have to order it.
@The_Fox: it looks like Gamestop finally has copies in for order online if you want to get it at retail price instead of whatever the vultures on Amazon and eBay are currently trying to sell it for, Wal-Mart seems to have it available for site-to-store (if you want local pickup), and it looks like Best Buy finally has it in stock again as well (again for local pickup if you don't want to pay shipping). definitely pick it up any way you can, my friend, it's a great game :3
@theblackdragon
Awesome! I'll have to look into that right now. I've been dying to get my hands on this one but really. really didn't want to pay the $20-$30 markup I've been seeing on eBay and Amazon. Thanks!
@The_Fox: no problemo, i'm all about helping people get their hands on this game :3
It's fitting, since this is the best one yet.
Finally Nintendo made Fire Emblem mainstream.
Good news for Fire Emblem indeed! It seems this entry in the series is the first to really hit a general audience, probably due to the marketing. Nonetheless, I'm glad I could help contribute to its success, having this been my first foray into the series.
That's really cool. I hope it considers to sell. This isn't that bad especially since it wasn't around on launch day anywhere.
I downloaded it. I wanted it without having to switch game cards and it wasn't in any stores so I got it on launch day. I'm on my 6th playthrough now.
I picked up a Physical Copy with an artbook (from Gamestop)
Give me the demo... i'm sick of waiting.
So glad to hear this! This game is fantastic and deserves to sell!
The characters don't have feet!!! Give them feet and I shall buy!!
@gundam00 You really wouldn't be caring about it after the first hour.
I played through my digital copy and was very impressed with the gameplay and the story. One great thing about having the download copy is that I've now moved onto Castlevania: MOF but I can always get right back into Fire Emblem for a quick battle without having to search for the cart. This benefit is adding great replay value since it is always an option for me as I browse my 3DS menu. Just a great game.
This game most certainly deserves the praise it has garnished. I recently played through Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones for my first time and the amount of improvements I've seen so far with Fire Emblem Awakening brings this series up to one of Nintendo's very best.
I canceled my preorder because it was delayed and got the eShop download instead. I've played +100hrs already and am only on chapter 20 (there are a lot of extras! ).
I got my copy here in AUS on preorder. Physical copy of course.
@Knuckles
Actually it is the opposite. With downloaded you will eventually lose the ability to play it. Since Nintendo has this terrible policy of locking downloaded games to one SINGLE 3DS unit, once that unit breaks you lose the game(s). The game will not always be supported on their servers years from now so if you want to go back and play it for old times sake you will probably find yourself tracking down a physical copy, that will work in ANY unit, from ebay.
That's good to hear! Hopefully this takes Nintendo out a bit of the "Mario" cloud!!
