If possible they should rerelease MK 8, SSB, and Splatoon and also somehow make the online modes compatible the Wii U versions. They probably wouldn't sell many copies to those of us who already have the games on the Wii U, but then theres only 10 million of us. If at least some of the 100 million people who never upgraded from the Wii can be convinced to buy this new system by a great lineup of games that they never got to play, that Nintendo at least in theory doesn't have to put a lot of resources into to make them available at launch, that if they are backward compatible online would actually give new life to the games we already own by bringing fresh blood online, then despite the fact that some of us might be alright sticking with our Wii U a little while longer, I think on balance it would be a plus.
Again, there are 10 million Wii U owners compared to 110 million Wii sales. They need to forget about us and work on getting those 100 million people back. Admittedly, its probably unlikely they reach those heights again but theres at least 10 million people out there who had a Gamecube and not a Wii U. Three of them are my own brothers. One of them plays SSB every time he comes over. If they could get some of those people back on board it would be worth the risk.
Actually half way through writing all this I realized they could accomplish almost the same thing by giviing those of us who bought the Wii U versions the NX ones for free with even less effort on their part. And it would be a great gift for being their most loyal customers and an incentive to buy their new system. Though with my idea there's a guaranteed built in online player base which is worth a lot with these online centric games.
Either way make them cheap. Heck call them Online Essentials and put them in a three pack for $60. Use them as loss leaders. Go crazy. Free Mario Kart 8 NX with every system! I wouldn't be bitter. I'd be happy to have more people to play online against.
As much as I feel special and unique for having Zelda Four Swords 20th Anniversary. I'd be happier if it was made available again so my kid could get it and I had someone to actually play it with. Same with these Wii U games.
The first couple paragraphs about the growing backlog and a preference for games you can wrap your head around put into words my relationship with games. I have a good amount of free time but I don't really have the attention span to play for more than an hour or so at a time mostly on my 3ds.
The last Zelda I played was actually the first one a few years ago. It had been so long and I'm not sure I'd ever been passed the first few dungeons when I was a kid. I beat it this time and quite enjoyed it.
Before that I played Twilight Princess and it felt kind of like a chore. It also felt like playing an N64 game without the charming (Imo) graphics. I realized it one day when I couldn't climb on top of a ledge to try to get to a higher area. It felt artificially limited and archaic. And the game also felt very linear. The original LOZ actually felt very organic in comparison. And I'm glad that it looks like BotW is getting back to that feeling.
On a final note I'd like to point out that Zelda has never really been a "traditional" game series. Up until the gamecube Zelda was a "groundbreaking" series where each new game was not just a high-water mark for the series but for gaming in general. It dawned on me watching the E3 trailer when I was pleasantly surprised that Link could jump and climb and would no longer be foiled by ledges. They've finally caught up to what the rest of the world has been doing. I wonder if the game will end up being a redefining moment the original was or Ocarina was.
I have always wanted an N64 controller to plug into the Wii with the same design except and with an improved analog joystick. On the other hand I've found I prefer how the games look on my 24" CRT through svideo from my actual N64 and would prefer they release the updated controller for that instead. Ideally I would like both. Along with replicas of the other systems pads for use on the Wii. I'm honestly more excited about the $10 controller than the NES mini. Time to finally buy Lost Levels.
I would enjoy it more if they cycled between three levels per hour for a little more variety. It looks like they planned for that with the space below the level names that looks like an empty space. I assumed they were planning on adding it in an update by I guess it would have happened already if that was the case.
Aside from that the sequel needs two (four) player online so me and my kid can play it together.
@nab1 I dont have any experience with the Wii U version but I will say in my opinion the game was developed for the 3ds. It pushed the 3ds to its limits and was apparently designed around the systems strengths and limitations. With games like that I usually prefer to play the original version. I bought the 3ds version and feel like its the definitive version.
That's my philosophy on these things but sometimes the reality can be complicated. If you need circlepad pro controls to enjoy the game I will say I dont think the c-stick on the N3ds is a good enough alternative for precision aiming. You also shoot with the inner zr buttons in cpp mode. The perfect version of the game would be the stable 3d of a new 3ds the second slide pad and correct triggers. For people who don't like 3d it has antialiasing in 2d mode which makes it a bit smoother and actually looks pretty nice.
I let my son read a Megaman comic they have at the library and he's been telling me he wants to play the games. That being said I think I want the cartridge because i have a feeling he'll lose interest pretty quick due to how challenging they are. With a cartridge it wont be trapped on his 2DS and thus available to put in my 3ds when i get the urge. I'd like to know more about any emulation issues as well.
I'm going to get D&D. I missed the last sale and have been wanting it for a while. The fact that they include a scanline filter makes me very happy.
@doll Hey doll. Sorry it took so long to come back and let you know the codes both worked. I went ahead and used the codes you sent to make sure they worked. I gave one of my sets to my brother and just have to decide which of my sons friends to give my extra set to. Either way some ~9 year old kid and their siblings should have a lot of fun. Thank you again.
Good to know the info on Pokepark. My son borrowed the second one from the library and enjoyed it. He finished it pretty quickly and I wondered if #1 was any good. Its actually $37 at Gamestop still. If I find it for $5 somewhere I'll buy it and donate it after he plays through it. Its good to know #2 was actually good and he wasn't just blinded by Poké fever. I dont really want either of them stuck on my Wii U but maybe the used prices will come down now that they are being re-released.
@doll I tried buying a 3rd bundle but ran out of time. I bought 2 full bundles for $13 each. I donate another dollar to the kids charity and give the 3rd copy of Affordable Space Adventures to my son's friend. If you still have the code for that It would be appreciated. I could probably find a home for another Wii U shantae code too but if you have a one code per customer policy thats perfectly fine.
I have an extra Runner 2 code from the last bundle that I'd love to trade for one of the 3ds game codes. SFIV, Nano Assault or Rythm Thief would be great. Im going to buy the bundle but I know some kids with a 3ds but no Wii U and I'm going to give the extra to them.
I just bought this game last night for $6 during the psn flash sale. I'd rather have the original since I still have a ps2 hooked up to a 24" Sony CRT and from what I've seen it looks nicer in that situation. You can't beat $6 though. At least this way my son is more likely to play it being on the ps3 on the main TV . Even if I find the ps2 original somewhere cheap I'm not sure I'll ever get to it with what's basically a 25 year backlog and a 20 minute attention span.
I'm always up for odd control schemes. I am a proud owner of DK Jungle Beat after all. But why cant they come up with a new scenario for Star Fox. I bought SF64 on the Wii despite the fact that I own a cartridge because I thought it would be cool in 480p and my n64 wasn't hooked up at the time. I prefer my old games old so I never bought the 3ds remake. Besides I never have found all the secrets in the original so I can still play that with a purpose not just to relive my childhood. In fact that's what I do on occasion. Nowadays on my actual N64 since its hooked up to my CRT again. The fact that it in fact tells the same story as the SNES original, which I also own and maybe even prefer, was interesting to learn all those years ago when I learned the SNES game existed after having played SF64.
SF Zero telling the same story is less Interesting and closer to kind of baffling given the recent release on the 3ds. I kind of doubt they planned this to be the case or they wouldn't have released SF64 3d at all. I'll probably buy this some day for cheap just to try the controls. For the record some sort of killer multiplayer could have made up for all this. See Splatoon.
It seems pretty obvious to me that this game was another release meant to extract capital from their most loyal customers to maintain funding until they can try again at achieving mass market success.

Heads up to anyone interested. The Pokemon TV app is also available on Roku. This should get my son interested in it again. Unless the episodes somehow end up on youtube as well. He'd almost certainly watch it on there instead. He has no time to concern himself with intellectual property rights... Or audio/video quality for that matter. Frankly if he could watch it with running commentary by Stampycat or some such character I'm sure he'd prefer that.
That whole thing about calling Nintendo when your 3ds is stolen seems a lot less complicated than doing an actual system transfer. I may have to keep that in mind if I upgrade to a New 3ds.
Its time for someone to pull a Wu Tang and develop a game for one person. I'm curious what type of power the thing is packing. I'd love to see what some old school squaresoft guys could squeeze out of that thing.
I wish Hori would make an equivalent to this. Better yet I wish Nintendo would readopt this face button configuration for all its controllers going forward. They could use a more subdued color choice so looks less garish. I finally ordered a Mario colored Hori Battle Pad from Amazon and am waiting on them to arrive. I may finally system transfer my Virtual Console games. The GCN controller was perfect for most N64 games. I was going to get the Luigi version but couldn't justify the extra couple bucks. I wish they were sold at GS. The PDP GC controllers were always junk and I'd love to see a superior product get more exposure and sales. The gold Link model is currently available for $25 on store.Nintendo.com for those interested.
Flea markets will be overrun with these things for a few dollars each in 10 years. They might retain some value sealed but we'll never get rich off of these. Maybe someones great grandkids will in 100 years but I say play with the things. I opened the ones I bought for my son carefully and kept the boxes for now. I'll probably use them when they eventually end up in the closet.
Really we all will probably hold onto our Amiibo collections for the most part but from what Ive seen Skylanders are already to the point that game stores are getting flooded with them. Its plastic guitars all over again.
I bought my son the translucent red 2ds refurbished from store.Nintendo.com for his birthday last year. I really like the look of the translucent models. They really evoke the old gameboy design language. And all the electronics and guts underneath really break up the plainness of the front of it and it looks a lot less like a weird Frankenstein machine. I saw the blue model later on in a Gamestop and it looked pretty good but I'm glad I went for the red. Those colored buttons look like a nice upgrade from dull gray on his too. And I want to see that yellow one irl sometime. I basically hate Pikachu but if it looks as cool as it does in that picture it will probably be pretty popular.
This article really should win some sort of award for journalism. The quality of writing and depth is far above anything I've ever read in any other video game website or magazine. Put it on sale for $10 and I'd buy it. $20 is more expensive than finding it used.
