I didn't bother watching Bethesda's conference since I knew Doom Eternal would be the only worthwhile thing shown, and I didn't need to partake in the yearly ritual of Todd Howard lying to my face. I'm sure their little soliloquies were pretty cringe too.
I'm betting all the DLC fighters will be 3rd party in this pass. Banjo is probably a lock and a DQ character is likely but MAYBE NOT, since there were apparently problems with Square allowing Cloud to return and he was the last to be locked down in the base game. REALLY hoping DOOMGUY will make it in, that would be INSANE. Minecraft Steve, Master Chief, Dante, Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, a Dark Souls character, a Resident Evil character, Diablo, Rayman, Lara Croft, etc. are all a possibility as well.
@SKTTR That's a good question: Why? There's nothing wrong with people advocating for the characters they want, that's how we got several of these characters. It's not "entitlement", it's voicing your opinion on improving a product to a corporation who produces said product in exchange for your money; it's a two-way street.
@patbacknitro18 And I doubt he publicly considered changing his mind about other aspects, until he did. At this point, adding ANY more characters would arguably not benefit the game in a major way, but they certainly will add many more for the next installment. Or, conversely, you could argue that adding characters generates excitement and hooks in fans of those characters; in which case, some popular characters who didn't originate from video games would do the trick as well, arguably reaching even larger fanbases or generating more internet buzz than some future hypothetical popular characters that did originate in video games.
It just seems to be the way the wind is blowing. Time will tell. I stand by my prediction.
@patbacknitro18 Sakurai's said a lot of things that he's changed his mind about later.
I think it's a natural progression; there's been too much demand from fans and too much interest from non-video-game companies to keep them out for much longer.
Well, who's to say Minions wouldn't be included?
That's up to Nintendo and the IP owners, just like every video game character that makes it in.
Edit: Not to mention, involvement with Nintendo doesn't guarantee representation.
For example, Ubisoft has no fighter in the game so far, despite developing the Mario/Rabbids crossover and the Switch version of Starlink with Star Fox.
And would your example, Minions, really be the worst thing?
MANY fans have wanted a playable Rabbid character, and they're very similar, but have yet to happen despite the Mario crossover.
Even BANDAI NAMCO only have ONE fighter represented, and they DEVELOPED the last 3 games. (Wii U/3DS/Ultimate)
@ReaderRagfish Are they relatively easy to repair? It seems like the analogue sticks on every N64 controller I find are basically useless wet noodles flopping around every which way.
Why the heck would you "sell off" your 3DS? I still have every game console I've ever owned. Don't tell me you've played every worthwhile 3DS game there is; I'm still finding hidden gems on the GBA, for example.
I really hope this isn't the last big 3DS game; it feels like it's ending too soon, when there's still a wall of 3DS games and consoles at every store, and presumably millions of owners who still play on a regular basis. At the very least, I'm sure there's going to be some more Nintendo Selects re-releases.
I'm interested how the ending of the game's story will play out. Not TOO differently, I hope. The movie was FANTASTIC and I hope it keeps a kind of loose continuity with the games/anime/manga, story-wise.
SPOILERS: To me, it seemed like the movie COMPLETED the story, while the ending of the game just gave them an excuse to keep Harry and Pikachu fused together, (i.e. They still have work to do for Mew-Two?) so they can continue the concept/character for another game. Maybe this game will expand upon the concept of the big finale set-piece from the movie, the villain's plot of fusing humans and Pokemon, with Mew-Two un-fusing Harry and Pikachu at the end, after the job is done.
OR you can just pop in the GameCube version in your Wii or GameCube and play it with a GameCube controller in 480p, still the BEST way to play this game. I tried the Wii version and didn't appreciate the cropped image and big targeting reticule, it feels more natural with standard controls too. I bought the HD version on PS3 on sale for a few dollars years ago and I thought it looked too "clean", that it lost some of the atmosphere and mood. GameCube all the way.
With the large story mode, this looks like it could be the ULTIMATE 2D Mario game.
The ONE thing I still want is the ability to create your own complete Mario game, linking your levels together with an OVERWORLD MAP. If they include that feature, it will be PERFECT.
@Jayofmaya "Secondly, I bet you any money that Banjo doesn't make it."
Not sure why you would bet money on ANY DLC character's inclusion OR exclusion after Piranha Plant and Joker's reveal have shown us to expect the unexpected.
Yes, out of all the rumored/wanted characters, Banjo-Kazooie is definitely the front-runner IMO; I would not be at all surprised if Microsoft has actively lobbied Nintendo for his inclusion as well. (or perhaps another Microsoft or Rare character will make the cut instead, in keeping with the out-of-left-field DLC trend) He's been wanted for several years and things are just lining up too well, there may even be other Banjo-Kazooie related news at Nintendo's E3 showing. A Dragon Quest character is also quite possible.
@Jayofmaya You could easily say there are too many cartoon-ish characters as well; I'd say it's a good mix that pleases most everyone. And your opining about a general lack of "variety" and the so-called "boring" nature among the more human-ish characters simply does NOT hold water. At all. You can't say Bayonetta, Snake, Ryu, Cloud, Link, Zero Suit Samus, Captain Falcon, Simon/Richter Belmont, Little Mac, Joker, Sheik, Shulk, etc. etc. "lack variety" in their appearance/movesets/style or have "boring" natures compared to the more cartoon-ish characters. That's utterly RIDICULOUS.
You may have a point if you say some of the Fire Emblem characters, specifically, are a bit too similar and too numerous, that's been a common complaint among western fans for years, but I understand that Fire Emblem is HUGE in some regions and Nintendo wants ample representation for new installments, and the characters would not be included if that demographic did not want them in the game.
And why is it so hard for Sonic Team to do 3D Sonic well? They've done it before with Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Even Sonic Heroes was pretty decent.
Maybe Sega should give outside developers more shots at 3D Sonic instead. Think of what PLATINUM GAMES, for example, could do with Sonic if they have a decent budget and development time.
@patbacknitro18 I really enjoyed the first two arcs of Dragon Ball Super, but I understand why many didn't, since they were just extended re-tellings of the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection F movies. In my case, I HAD NOT SEEN those movies prior to watching those arcs, (Super is what pulled me back in to Dragon Ball) and after having watched the movies since then, I STILL prefer the Super re-tellings. Some things are expanded upon and set up that are called back to later, and I enjoyed the "slice of life" aspects. I do agree that the "Universe 6 Saga" is when the series really kicks into high gear though, with tons of great new characters and ideas.
@FullbringIchigo Ryu is considered the main character of Street Fighter, but there shouldn't be 15 versions of Ryu in a Street Fighter game in place of other fan favorite characters. Dragon Ball is a rich and varied universe with a long history to pull from, including many more great characters who were recently introduced in Dragon Ball Super. The current amount of Gokus is enough, no more Vegetas either. (who has the same amount of representation, not counting Goku Black, a Goku in name only, and Kid Goku, a very different form) No Ultra Instinct Goku, no Maijin Vegeta, no Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Vegeta.
@zip No. For a technical fighter, DBFZ had a GREAT starting lineup with a ton of content and the Season Passes are very reasonable, especially if you caught them on sale or bought the edition that included Season 1. Street Fighter V, on the other hand, is an example of how NOT to launch a fighting game.
@TheFox OR you can have a wide variety of different characters from different games for different fans, like they've done and are doing, instead of being selfish and wanting the roster to only appeal to your sensibilities.
Extremely likely. In addition to Nintendo and Ubisoft's good collaborative relationship, he's been rumored and wanted for years. (though you could say the same thing about GENO and he's probably not happening, unfortunately)
The only character I would say is a LOCK at this point is Banjo-Kazooie. I would be VERY surprised if they don't make the cut as a fighter.

Nintendo is going to DESTROY Microsoft's conference.
Pretty much every Nintendo Direct was better than this.
