@gutsack: I'm interested to hear how many other languages you've managed to become indistinguishable from any native speaker in.

@Cobalt: I don't get why there are some people who consistently react negatively to everything you say. It's almost like they believe it to be a crime to be disappointed and wish to issue death sentences to those who voice that disappointment. Keep on fighting the good fight.

Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Family Games - Great To Play With Your Kids This Christmas

c2017nlifemedia

1 2 Switch is one of the worst 'games' I have played in my entire life. I don't understand why it's in this list at all. It isn't even fun watching other people 'play' it, because it's so bad it's frustrating to even watch because anyone who 'plays' it is bound to get frustrated within two minutes - luckily you can literally 'play' everything it has on offer within ten minutes. I wouldn't even recommend it if it were 100% gratis, and I'd even urge people to stay away from it if Nintendo paid people to 'play' it. Absolutely horrendous, worse than any mobile rubbish and simply worse than you could ever imagine, stay away from it, do not touch, ever.

Additionally, a quick reminder that Wii Sports was 100% gratis, contained hundreds of hours of entertainment, and is still a blast to play at parties and even alone. Just dust off your Wii and play that instead, if you want to play something cool.

Re: Review: Abzu - A Gorgeous And Thought-Provoking Journey That All Switch Owners Should Embark On

c2017nlifemedia

@Kimyonaakuma Thanks for mentioning Flower, that's the one that really pushed the envelope. As much as I thoroughly enjoyed Journey, it's still you in control of a humanoid character trying to get the equivalents of powerups and levelups. Of course, this is doing a disservice to Journey, but it's only because Flower is so much more out there. In Flower you play as the wind in a flower's dream!

I'm curious to try this one out, it looks nice and I enjoy short games because I can finish them in one sitting.

Re: Attention All Pokémon Let's Go Poké Ball Plus Owners: For The Love Of God, Don't Ever Delete Your Save

c2017nlifemedia

@vitelus Shows how most of the 'professional' reviews, including the one on this very website, were paid for. Not one website even published a negative review and most went out of their way to make sure negative aspects were kept out of the spotlight as much as possible! Also take a look at the users scoring it 10/10, all of them have never played any other Pokémon game than Go and/or RBY. If it had had any other name than Pokémon, no one would have bought it.

Re: Random: Japanese Man Named Miyamoto Arrested For Selling Modded Super Famicom Mini

c2017nlifemedia

@Heavyarms55 I'm not sure where you live, but "high school level economics and social studies courses" are not part of any high school equivalent default mandatory curriculum in most of the developed world. I also think you don't really understand what's happening here: the guy sold modded consoles, not ROMs. Finally, whoever bought these with such an enormously inflated price must be quite stupid, as you can do the required 'modding' in less than two minutes with little more than an internet connection and a USB cable.

Japanese copyright law is clearly even dumber than the Anglo-Saxon one.

Re: Hardware Review: Poké Ball Plus - The Most Imperfect Perfect Accessory You Could Imagine

c2017nlifemedia

Although it looks great and would be a nifty gadget for €20 or so, the price is stupidly high and the functionality is apparently stupidly bad. What a shame!

Also, I don't know why Nintendo gets the honour of being good at immersive peripherals. Sega released Samba de Amigo with its maracas four years before Donkey Konga (and made a game you have to talk to to progress! if that isn't immersive...). I suppose the honour is based instead on popularity, but how many people have even played either of these?

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

c2017nlifemedia

@3rdParty It's a bit silly that by making a somewhat positive remark on Sony compared to Nintendo, you already seem to believe that I'm somehow praising Sony to high heaven. All I was trying to say is that Nintendo constantly gets away with anti-consumer practices where other companies offer at least something, showing that Nintendo is anti-consumer on purpose. Why would they offer anything of value if their loyal fans will buy whatever they put in stores, regardless of quality or price? I think I've said it before, but there are very strong parallels between Apple and Nintendo. Luckily this news shows that there are not as many loyal useds as I, and certainly they, had expected.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

c2017nlifemedia

@Pod I probably wrote it in a confusing way, but I didn't mean to say that the PSP or the Vita is hardware compatible with the PS1, rather they use similar components and can 'emulate' (there's a better term on the tip of my tongue) with a very small compatibility layer, POPS and PSPEMU respectively.

I always thought all fat PS3s were compatible with the PS2 library, but apparently some are only through a software compatibility method, and in fact most of the fat models didn't even include any compatibility for PS2 games at all. Interesting, thanks for the correction!

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

c2017nlifemedia

@3rdParty Backwards compatibility has nothing to do with what I was talking about. You're also wrong, as the fat PS3s were hardware compatible with PS2 games, the PSP was compatible with more or less the entire PS1 library, and the PS Vita was hardware compatible with the PSP (and thus also the PS1). The PS4 is the first one that isn't backwards compatible with any previous physical games. Again, though, I wasn't talking about backwards compatibility, because it's unreasonable to expect a new console to read all of the previous console's physical games (you don't see me complaining about the lack of a disc drive in the back of the Switch for Wii/U compatibility, or a card slot for 3/DS). I don't expect Nintendo to put a Famicom cartridge slot in every console they make, but what I do think is reasonable to expect is that once I buy the digital version of a game from them, I can play it on every console of theirs that has this game available for sale. I don't care whether some consoles have a better or a worse emulator to run those games on than others, or whether on some there are additional features like save states and others just play the ROM from start to finish. I am not talking about getting the Ultra HD remaster for free if I bought the original game twenty years before.

Either way, "just hook up your old console" isn't a good argument for several reasons. I might not have that old console anymore, it might be broken, it might be somewhere else, and so on. In addition to that, "just hooking up" old consoles to HD tv's is not as easy as you make it sound. Many tv models no longer even provide the correct ports (ironically, it seems that the more expensive a tv is, the less ports it has), and even so the resulting image is unlikely to look good, with blurry upscaling, 50/60Hz issues, borked alignment, ... Finally, it's all just a hassle to dust off and hook up an old console to play it for a couple of days and put it away again, when you could play a nearly perfectly emulated copy of the game on your modern console that's already hooked up and has no problems with HD tv's.

Re: Team Cherry Has Cancelled The Physical Version Of Hollow Knight

c2017nlifemedia

And also: should your account be banned for any which reason, good luck getting back the stuff you paid for. I'll admit I don't know about Sony or Microsoft's policies regarding the matter, but Nintendo actually blocks banned accounts from accessing the eShop, regardless of how much money they spent on there or how much they wanted to spend on future purchases.

Re: Team Cherry Has Cancelled The Physical Version Of Hollow Knight

c2017nlifemedia

@RadioHedgeFund I can log onto the DSi Store and, no, wait... I can log onto the Wii Shop and, no, wait... I can log onto the PSP Store and, no, wait... Yes, you can download them on the PS3 (or PC) and transfer to the PSP, or on the Vita, but how long until those servers are shut down as well? Why would Sony keep a bunch of old files on old servers when barely anyone still accesses them? Besides, there are many examples of games no longer being available for sale for whatever reason, and not all of them even appear in your purchase history anymore (although curiously they're still available on Sony's servers if you have a direct link to them).

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

c2017nlifemedia

I'm very pleased the service is not working out for them just yet, as it shows there are not as many blind followers as I had suspected. Nintendo will never improve their online nonsense if people already pay for it when it doesn't offer anything of value. How could you expect anything else when they've actually made the Switch online 'service' much worse compared to the Wii U's, the 3DS's and even the Wii's and DS's, all of which were entirely free of charge?

@WiltonRoots “Why are you making me buy it again Nintendo!!??!?!?!" Nobody's forcing anyone to do anything.”
Let's compare it to buying something on the PlayStation store: when I buy a game on the PS3 store, I get the PS4 and the PS Vita versions for free (if they exist, of course), allowing me to play on whichever console I'm sitting in front of at that moment. Several games even provide a cross-save function, allowing me to play on the PS3, then continue right where I left off on the Vita, then continue on the PS4, then continue again on the Vita through remote play.
Indeed, Nintendo does not force anyone to buy the same game over and over again. Instead, they simply don't give their customers any other way to play the same game on the system they've got plugged in at that point. Not everyone has a massive games room with all consoles hooked up at the same time.

Re: YouTube Has Officially Arrived On Nintendo Switch

c2017nlifemedia

"supports (...) touchscreen input"

Unless you want to scroll, in which case you still have to use the buttons. It's also fairly unresponsive when a video is playing, you have to tap multiple times before the info comes up and you can seek to a different position. Bit of a hack job. Also: ads. A brave new world indeed.

@NEStalgia Surely those are two different groups of people.

Re: Devolver Digital Won't Release Mother Russia Bleeds In Australia, Due To Unapproving "Government Folk"

c2017nlifemedia

@Mrtoad It definitely was Nintendo practicing censorship. Two infamous cases are Mortal Kombat with green blood, and Nintendo of America's big boss at the time proclaiming games like Night Trap (and Mortal Kombat, etc) to be sick and twisted with no chance of ever appearing on a Nintendo console. In fact, I believe he even literally said that Nintendo wilfully censored certain games and refused to allow others to appear on their systems for their violent themes. All PR nonsense, of course, but they themselves were actually responsible for censorship.

Re: Random: Former Sega President Admits The Mega Drive Was Created To "Beat" Nintendo

c2017nlifemedia

@kepsux It's a bit untrue to claim that Sega got trounced when the only market where the SNES sold more was Japan. Japan bought a mere 4.3 million Mega Drives but a massive 17.7 million SNESes (?). Not taking the one exception to the rule into account really skews the numbers.

Also don't forget that by the time SNES started picking up sales, Sega was already pushing the Saturn. In hindsight, they really should have flushed that turd before it hit the market (except for the controller) and invested a lot more time and effort into the 32X, which had a lot of potential and would have been a great way to keep on selling Mega Drives. Then again, the Saturn was Sega of Japan's doing, and given the relative lack of Mega Drives sold in Japan, perhaps the 32X wouldn't really have worked out over there either way. Perhaps as an all-in-one console, given Sega's penchant for releasing revisions of revisions of revisions.

Re: Nintendo Really Wants You To Use A Wired Connection For Smash Bros. Ultimate

c2017nlifemedia

@tabris95 TWENTY YEARS LATER the Dreamcast still has Nintendo beat. I wish some people would stop letting Nintendo off the hook for all their anti-consumer practices (of which there are enough to provide daily featured NL articles for the next couple of years) all because they occasionally make a nice game. Nintendo truly is the Apple of video games, and still that's an insult to Apple.

Re: Three, Yes Three Resident Evil Games Are Headed To Nintendo Switch In 2019

c2017nlifemedia

@BlueOcean The Switch version of Revelations 2 is virtually identical to the PS4 version it was ported from graphics-wise (bar the outrageous loading times). It was originally a PS3 game, sure, but the graphics are great (constant 1080p as well), and the performance is pretty good, too - although you only get 60fps in small areas, and there is no fixed rate so it goes up and down, all things considered it's great. Unless Resident Evil 7 is significantly heavier, it should run relatively well on the Switch as long as the same wizards who ported Revelations 1 and 2 are doing the work.

Re: Nintendo Download: Gaming On The Go Sale (Europe)

c2017nlifemedia

@FX102A No, RE: Revelations 2 is a truly excellent port and by far one of the best (and also best looking, on par with the PS4 version) games on the system. The optional motion controls for aiming are outstanding and blow Splatoon out of the water. The only real downside is that loading a level can take up to two whole minutes (although usually around one minute). In the story mode this doesn't really matter as the levels/episodes are, or at least can be, pretty long, but in raid mode it can be pretty frustrating. Eventually you just get used to it, but it still sucks. Other than that, it's brilliant.

Do take note though that Nintendo will now bug you to buy a Nintendo Online subscription every time you start the game, because it tries to connect to the RE.NET servers to find out if you have any bonus items to transfer and to find out what the latest special missions are in raid mode. Such a privilege, paying Nintendo to be allowed access to Capcom's servers.

@Captain_EO @kobashi100 I agree, it's great. By the way, you usually also get a significant discount on RE:R1 if you've already bought RE:R2, or on RE:R2 if you've already bought RE:R1. I wonder if they stack up with the current discounts.

Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

c2017nlifemedia

@Brutchie-bear @NewAdvent: The problem lies in the fact that once the servers distributing the rest of the game shut down, which could be in 50 years or it could be next year if Ubisoft suddenly went bankrupt, buying the game second hand will give you absolutely nothing but a box and a game cartridge that doesn't work. Also, should you get the game now and want to revisit it some time in the future, as chances are slim that you would still have the memory card the mandatory download was saved onto, or that you would have kept those data if you needed some space for something else and weren't playing the game anyway, you won't be able to get the missing pieces ever again. Essentially, the game will become unplayable sooner or later.

Of course, there are two solutions to this. Either companies start taking the minor monetary hit of using larger capacity cartridges for larger games, or everyone will be forced to use the ABSOLUTELY 100% ILLEGAL backup of the full game some friendly soul made and shared years ago.

Re: Reggie Says Nintendo Competes For Consumer Time, Not Concerned About Direct Competition

c2017nlifemedia

@dleec8 There is absolutely nothing insulting about telling someone they've said something stupid, e.g. "Your example is dumb". "You're an idiot" is an insult, because it's directed towards the person and not towards that which was said. You don't have to be an idiot to give a dumb example. Either way, if you really enjoy endlessly insulting everyone who disagrees with you, be my guest, but please don't be a hypocrite, and please understand that someone expressing disagreement in a harsh way does not necessarily have any intention to insult.

Re: Reggie Says Nintendo Competes For Consumer Time, Not Concerned About Direct Competition

c2017nlifemedia

@dleec8 Interesting, the other guy called your example dumb, in return you call him (not his examples) dumb, a fool and a clown, yet you claim he's getting 'agressive'.

Also, for reference, the couple of people you know who buy a gaming console in order not to play any games on it are textbook examples of statistical outliers. When the average person buys a PlayStation, it's to play games on it, not to press play and watch (although you could make the argument that a great many PlayStation titles in recent years are essentially movies).

Re: Pirated Copies Of Super Mario Party Appear Online, Switch Piracy Concerns Continue To Grow

c2017nlifemedia

@onex Different discussion, but stealing and sharing copies are most definitely two different things. It's unfortunate that copying has no 'real world' analogy (unless you count 3D printing), but creating/sharing a copy is not the same as stealing something. You can steal a game by going to a shop and stealing the game. You can also steal it from someone else by taking it whilst they're not looking (or if you're a real daredevil, whilst they are looking), and never giving it back. That way, the shop or person in question is deprived of the object and no longer has it. If you create a copy, the shop/person will still have the game. Feel free to argue pro/contra digital copies (and physical copies should those ever be possible), just don't call it by something it isn't. Technically speaking, you can also steal software, but it's really difficult, as you would have to either steal its only physical carrier(s), or erase all traces of it everywhere.
