Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

anynamereally

I absolutely loved DS/Wii and 3DS/Wii U era so I was fairly optimistic at Switch launch and maybe during its first 2 years while we were mostly waiting for more big releases to happen. At that point anything was a possibility.

But since quite a few years have passed I changed my mind and now I'm very sceptical about Nintendo moving forward with such hardware, very unimpressive 1st party line up and dry release schedule (even by Wii U standards).

new horizons will go in history as the most bland AC game that's for sure.
my main gripe so far is that there are tons of items, creatures and recipes out there, but you won't have a chance to see them in your game because of wall of restrictions that prevent you to actually get them.
players are finding themselves in a limited pool of items, and to break out of this bubble they have to search for someone local or online to share the stuff. i cannot get behind this move, such a terrible decision from the dev team to force players share stuff instead of finding all of it inside their own game.

@peppermillian

well, okay, but who considers OLEDs as premium, though? me? I don't. I totally see it just as an alternative to LCDs, with its own set of upsides and downsides.

@RantingThespian
>I see this as the equivalent to the 3DS XL, and not the New 3DS (with the Switch Light being the equivalent to the 2DS).

well, you know, 3DS XL had screens double of the size of original 3DS model. so just that alone is a worthy upgrade even putting aside everything else. it had a different feel to it and a different experience in the end.
... and switch OLED on the other hand? not so much.

@Ahlvin23 maybe. but I'd rather run through some maze-like environments that do resemble older SMT entries when it was all just about labirynths than these huge semi-open world areas with crumbled buildings and no intricate details around you.
IDK, you'll probably forget about all of these areas once you run past them, doesn't look memorable or interesting to me.

TWEWY2 on the other hand, since it all happens inside a city, it has tremendous amount of details hence it's really fun to just run around and explore things on your own.

not a fan of the environments they've built for this game, they all look kinda samey and uninspired.
also not a fan of the UI because it was taken straight out of TMS#FE, and it doesn't quite fit in with the mood of this entry.

I've been waiting for this new SMT since it's initial announcement back in 2017, but now when the wait is almost over... IDK, I'd rather just get something like TWEWY2 instead, which looks much more promising at this point.

P.S. also +1 that there's no sign of that digital priest from the cathedral of shadows. he and classical organ music were such a big part of the atmosphere.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Nintendo Direct At E3 2021?

anynamereally

E3 direct left me thinking that directs of this scope should happen more regulary like twice a year.

It wasn't a E3 scope direct by any means, but if we get such direct at least once in half a year then it's a good pace of things coming up - good amount of new stuff arriving in short time (like Metroid 5, WarioWare, SMT5), nice reboots of old classics (like Advance Wars), big stuff luring at the background (like Zelda BotW2). It all forms a nice, well shaped and packed regular nintendo direct. But not E3 direct, because E3 supposed to go beyond that.

In the end I'm glad we had this direct, and here's hoping they would do that more regulary. They're making small steps in a right direction with putting more resources into more niche titles like Advance Wars and Metroid. So that's also a good sign.

Re: Shin Megami Tensei V Is A Switch Exclusive Launching This November

anynamereally

I don't how to feel about the UI that was obviously taken straight out from SMTxFE crossover.
It certainly looks good on its own right, I loved that game on Wii U, but now in a mainline SMT title... it looks kinda lazy from Atlus, if you know what I mean.

Even more so, if anyone remembers SMTxFE had really bright, colorful world and presentation which of course was reflected in its UI. And now having the same shiny gleeful icons doesn't look right to me in a much darker and gritty SMT5 world.

Re: Soapbox: Be Happy, This Is The True Golden Age Of Gaming

anynamereally

This is silly. Everyone who tries to say again and again that it's a "golden age" of gaming we're currently living through - it's just plain silly.
Let's not confuse quality/innovation of real "golden age" (and we all know it was the 90s) with accessibility and variety of games available on the market today. It's quality over quantity kind of talk.

Re: Feature: Best Wii U Games

anynamereally

That list of exclusive games really makes me want another generation of Nintendo "failure" console.

And Wii U version of Zelda BotW clearly would have been a superior version of the game if only Nintendo themselves did not removed the dual-screen setup. Visual/performance differences is not that noticeable, really.

Re: Video: Are People Still Playing Wii U Games Online? Let's Find Out

@Clyde_Radcliffe
>Everything. It's massive and part of the reason I skipped that generation as I just didn't find it comfortable.

have you ever held a Wii U gamepad at all? it doesn't sound like you had, honestly.
because what is really not comfortable to hold is a pair of thin small joy-cons and the whole Switch in handheld mode. and you'll be tired of holding it pretty fast when playing longer sessions that way.

on the other hand Wii U gamepad is super comfortable to hold and play on. it's big, with bigger buttons, ergonomic, easy on hands, proper d-pad, a headphones jack in, a screen to manage your map or inventory (XCX or Wind Waker are good examples of that).
IMO Switch feels like a downgrade after that.

Re: Review: Torchlight III - A Rewarding Dungeon-Crawler That Plays It A Little Too Safe

anynamereally

>>In short, Torchlight III can be best defined as a ‘more of the same’ release.

As a big fan of these series I'd say that Torchlight II was also "more of the same release". I mean T2 basically was T1 + added multiplayer support.
Was there something new? Not really. T2 tried really hard to be something what was Diablo 2 to Diablo 1, but IMO fell short in that regard. It never reached that luring potential. And at the same time with T2 they lost all precious atmosphere and cosiness of being a small scale world they had with T1.

Isometric ARPG genre today is all about small iteration steps. Innovation comes through details. Same goes for Torchlight 3, it is smaller things that matter.
