I may not agree with many of his decisions over the years, but I would never wish ill will upon the man. He's a good dude, my best wishes and health to him and hope to see him on a Nintendo Direct again soon.
@Nintenjoe64 Those of us who grew up gaming in the 80s and 90s also had the one place where there were no cheat codes, no mods (except maybe free-play), no flame wars or trolling and you proved your dominance on a level field: The Arcade. Ahhh good times, cue old guy music.
Great interview. I was in high school and then college during the height of the console wars and had no idea how much the internal friction at Sega had influenced the results that we're all still feeling today. There was little on the internet in general, so most of us gamers had to rely on magazines (which were sometimes months behind on news and didn't publish anything that the companies in question wouldn't want published since they were also advertisers) and simple word-of-mouth at a game or comics store (which was probably 97% bs). @ MAB: Word up dude. I had an SNES, my buddy had a Genesis, we would literally spend every friday night at one of our houses with a bunch of game rentals from our respective systems and it was awesome.
No complaints here. Fantastic control (I'd expect nothing less from Nintendo) and baby-bottom smooth framerates are all I've seen. Even my wife has been impressed. Only problem has been the weathers been so nice here we haven't had much chance to play.
Hey, its a commercial, so I'm not going to complain about that. Weird IS good, and its certainly better than those family-on-the-couch ads they've tried in the past.
I remember those days fondly. Going over to a buddys house to play Madden and Golden Axe on his Genesis, good times. Can only imagine how out of control the Trolling would've gotten had the internet been around back then.
Easiest and best way to 1 million sales? Nintendo, I have your answer...
Try some advertising. I know, I know, sounds nutty, even downright insane. Make it fun, heck, you don't even have to show the game, but maybe lose the family on the couch routine. Sony ran PS4 ads for 6 months that didn't show anything but dudebros singing and explosions. Have some guy in a Link costume hack away at some Orc-like creatures then slap the Hyrule Warriors name and a Wii U at the end and put it on TV. You might get some sales and even gasp sell a few U's in the process.
Nintendo changes nothing from past MKs: people complain. Nintendo makes changes from past MKs: people complain. How about: biggest title Nintendo releases till winter thats getting all sorts of buzz, so I'll write an off the wall review about racism to get more web hits and hopefully noticed.
@ MoonKnight7 Its cool dude. I stand behind my opinion, knowing full well that it might draw some heat, and will respond and back it up accordingly. Its a good discussion and everyone has been respectful. I think we're all after the same thing here, wanting Ninty to do well.
@ Unca_Lz If that's all you've gotten out of what I said, then yes, it is. And sorry buddy, but they would listen to reason in a financial meeting. Spending money on marketing can, and will, yield more results if its used properly. NOT marketing the Wii U in any form, like what they've been doing, has been the biggest blunder in Nintendo's history. I say bigger than the VB. Abandoning a system that's selling poorly when there is an incredible amount of untapped possibility is foolish. There is still plenty of time to give the Wii U a push, I get the sense that they're being stubborn to save face. Keep pushing the 3DS, I have no problem with that, my family has 3 of them (and 1 Wii U). Its a pain in the butt having to keep track of 3 different accounts however...
@ ScorpionMG & PJR0cks Don't get me wrong, I agree that they're making steps in the right direction and I'm just as pumped about MK8 as the next guy. Mr.Iwata even seems like a really good, funny guy. My whole point is that sometimes change is a good, and necessary, thing for growth. A new person at the top doing things differently could very well shake the industry up. Or at least let the world know that Nintendo means business. They should be leading the industry, and right now they're just sort of marching to their own beat in it with Iwata in charge.
@ScorpionMG Too little, too late for me. I don't have any fancy quotes or numbers to show off, just my own observations as a gamer and consumer for, lets just say a long time. -Unified account system. If they want to concentrate on selling more 3DS's and linking them with Wii U's then this is a must. Its a must anyways and completely ridiculous that this isn't around already. Completely unacceptable. -NFC is nice and all, but again, this should've been done long before Disney jumped in, and even Skylanders. Pokemon had toyed with the idea years ago but nobody ran with it until Skylanders made a obscene amount of money with it. -Advertising and the name Wii U. This horse has been beaten to the point of comedy. Thinking they're saving money by going the cheapest route possible on marketing has been a massive blunder, and the name "Wii U"... ugh. Even Wii2 makes more sense and is easier to get across to the consumer. -VC and nostalgia. Again, speaks for itself. Why aren't all past 1st party Nintendo games available for digital download? Great question. The eShop should be like iTunes with digital movies by the bucket full. Its not, and its an untapped source of revenue. Thinking the consumer will buy more when less is offered is foolish and not in tune with what your consumer wants. -3rd party support. The minute that EA and others decided they didn't want to deal with Kyoto anymore, or worse yet become the butt-end to Twitter jokes, Satoru should've jumped on a plane, or dialed up his Mario phone and put a stop to this. Yes, EA sucks, but if you want people to buy your system, you need these titles.
Part of me just wants to go off half-cocked and scream "FIRE IWATA!". But I realize that it's just not that simple. However... Mr.Iwata needs to go, now. Its hard for me to get behind Satoru when he refuses to listen to the consumer and ignore some very simple steps that would bring people to the Wii U. Concentrating on the 3DS is not the answer. New blood is needed, a fresh perspective. Someone who's going to do things differently, like say, put some money in the advertising budget. I'd like to see some passion at the top, not another apology followed by another year/quarter (whatever) of doing the same darn thing.
Time to dust off my "FIRE IWATA" sign. Seriously, marketing, are you familiar with the concept in Kyoto? Where I live the marketing for MK8 has been as follows: news release by Nintendo, gets picked up by gaming outlets, financial sites report Ninty is doomed, nobody knows what a Wii U is outside of gamers, a PS4 ad runs on my tv, repeat. Its so frustrating.
I'm glad that Mr.Iwata and company are once again following their own path and not conforming to what the Western Media wants: Doing things just like MS/Sony. I know we're all excited for E3, but after following the event for years and years (never been to one unfortunately) its grown, well, stale to me with the way its stage format is ran. Nintendo will have its share of critics, as always, before and after the event. I hope these new formats they're trying turns heads and gets people excited regardless. Which is what E3 is all about.
Betcha a dollar Ubi looked at their projected numbers for year-end Wii U sales, figuring in MK8 & SSB bundles & what Nintendo is projecting themselves, and realized things aren't as horrible as whats being made out in the media.
Mr. Iwata is correct in that they can do whatever they want, I would just like them to put more than a $20 bill in the marketing budget when they decide to unveil their next endeavors.
I've seen a few TV spots on MK8 where I live. No where near what should be considered acceptable for such a high profile title.
Mr. Iwata's job is at stake here, quite frankly I would've thought he'd give the green light on increasing the advertising budget to capitalize on a weak gaming market in May.
The concept is there, looks like it could turn out to be a ton of fun. A chase scene that sends Biff into a manure truck at the end would be a blast. Looking forward to see if this ever goes anywhere.
Happy 25th my green screened little friend. Perhaps I will take a moment to gaze upon you as you sit atop my man-shelf. Maybe I'll even wipe the dust off of you too.
My wife and I are about to have a baby in the very near future. Chances are I'll be spending less time with a controller in my hand, but I have kept most of my games and consoles from the last 2 decades. I'm very much looking forward to down the road and playing all of these games from various systems with my child as it grows up. Can't wait, really.
I love the expositions that so many older titles have and share. Simple, to the point, no huge plot to deal with, just race and blow stuff up. Fun game, I remember renting it several times as a wee lad.
@Einherjar Sure it is, sort of. The download on 3DS would kick on as soon as your unit enters into its main wi-fi hotspot. Like the little blue notification light that turns on.
Its a nice start and the layout and info are helpful and effective... But... Wouldn't it be nice to also purchase the titles from the site and they download to your Wii U/3DS automatically? Like while at work/school etc, so its ready to go when you get home. I'm sure we'll get there someday, baby steps.
EA could've had a great VR experience with a killer golf game on Wii U using the pad and wiimotes. Instead they go out of their way to alienate gamers for not supporting the platform they want supported.
Couldn't possibly care less if a game is online or not. I know I'm in the minority on this but playing against people online lost its luster years ago. Much prefer single campaigns with the occasional local multi-player if the wife and I have people over.
