I'm usually pretty proud when I can get the first 3 stones in under an hour, but this makes me feel like a rookie who's never picked up a controller before.
@WiiUExposed You hit on something there with 2011 and how unprepared they were. Its almost as if they were satisfied with the Wii and didn't have a focused plan for R&D heading into the next generation of systems. Still having split handheld/console divisions then probably didn't help either, something to this day I can't believe went on for that long.
Yay another article about some guy telling the world what he thinks Nintendo should do. All I know is that in Japanese history and culture, they don't exactly give up easy. And despite what the Instant Gratification Nation says (IGN?) I, a consumer who spends A LOT his money on Nintendo products, love my Wii U and will gladly be buying games for it for the next half-decade. The fact Big N doesn't follow what the PS/Boxes do makes me want to support them even more.
This is interesting because they're not just renewing an existing patent or trademark, but adding to it. Sometimes companies will renew just for the sake of doing it, even if they have no intention of using it. Good stuff, instant download day one.
It seems more like something personal against Nintendo than just a short-sighted business move. But I've never heard of Asda since I'm in the States and don't know their history or business culture.
Very interesting insight from the inner workings of the industry. There seems to be a positive swing going on for Ninty these past few weeks, I hope it continues.
Thats great and all, but I have no interest in any of the games you're coming out with. In fact, I think I would rather play your games from the 2600 than COD or Angry Birds.
Its called the Law of Supply and Demand. $10 is exactly what I would've charged and an excellent value for how many hours the game requires. The hard part is switching between Earthbound and Shin Megami Tensei IV for what I want to play at that given moment.
Wow, great review. Was going to get this anyways since the wife loves Pikmin. Its still nice to see the amount of effort involved by Ninty in putting this title together before purchase.
We're supposed to get Gamecube games on the Wii U VC at some point right? Well, thats the theory anyways. Whos to say that the GCN version of Soul Caliber isn't already slated to be ported? It would be pretty bold of a 3rd Party to tout a GCN-era VC game when the service hasn't officially "announced" a title from that console. I could see Big N telling Namco Bandai to hold off on that for now. That logic makes more sense to me than the usual conspiracy theory and such.
@KnightRider666 I'm with ya bro. I had this in its original form back in the day and spent many, many hours toiling away in frustration... Yet always coming back for more. That opening theme is still imbedded in my brain. Its not a "classic" in my opinion, and buying it for both Wii U and 3DS isn't the best way to spend $10, but its worth a score of 5/10 to me for its difficulty, music and retro appeal.
There are so many great personal memories with the NES, especially since I got to be part of that generation as a kid. Beating games like Zelda and Zelda II, Dragon Quest, Legacy of the Wizard and the NES versions of Ultima in an age where there was no internet, and sometimes on a b&w tv, was something to be proud of. Don't miss blowing on the carts, or having to use one cart wedged on top of another cart to hold it in the machine if the spring broke, one bit tho.
This game means a lot to me. 7 years old in 1981 and I had to stand on a chair to play Donkey Kong. It was the first game I can truly remember falling in love with, and make the quarters last longer than the other kids. My parents finally got a Colecovision with DK packed in, and I wore out those weird controllers. Obviously its aged horribly, but I'll never forget how it started my favorite hobby.
This has become a tiresome daily discussion. One that is nothing more than circular. Much like the summer of '11 with the 3DS. Is it news? Not really. Its an interview with a question/answer designed to spark debate. Guess what I'm saying is that I'm tired of constantly being told I'm playing on a failure of a machine. One that is only 9 months old and with probably a dozen retail titles I want coming out over the next year, plus the Indie and VC goodies I don't even know about yet. Been gaming for a long time, since the Atari Pong machine, and this Instant Gratification Society and reliance on ultra-powerful 3rd party devs is really turning me off to the industry.
I remember when the NES came out and all the kids in school had to have one. Most of us had a 2600 or Colecovision, but seeing and playing SMB blew all of us away. I gotta hand it to Nintendo, they created a culture from the very beginning. Congrats on 30 years, I hope we see at least 30 more.
Looking forward to it. Change can be scary and usually isn't met with open arms and enthusiasm in the gaming world. This is a series that can deviate from its own norm if it wants to, I think, and be just fine.
Well... Its still listed on the Coming Soon part of the eShop, which is a good thing. Other than Mr.Jimenez saying something along the lines of "not my problem", I don't really know what "nightmare for that producer" really means and the article doesn't really go into detail on any of that. (Follow up with D&Ds producer maybe?)
Gaming delays are as normal as the rain nowadays. I'd always rather see them put out a quality product thats been delayed than a buggy one that wasn't.
I love it when a corporations initial response to anything is "no"... until someone with a brain stops and thinks about the bad pub for a second. I love ya Nintendo, but sometimes I wonder if there isn't a stubborn grumpy old man making the decisions.
Damo has an excellent point about who this firm is and how they seem to strictly be looking at numbers. Quite a difference from our favorite Mr.Pachter who tends to contradict himself and is more interested in making his own news. The fact of the matter is we're in an Instant Gratification Society. Combine that with Western ideals trying to make sense of a Japanese company, competition that can afford to take a loss on hardware because of their other properties (and rely on major 3rd parties for the bulk of their software, giving them more power than they should) and BAM! You've got your weekly doom & gloom. There is no way a price drop is happening until the Sony/MS launches, or at least until just before. I'll be very curious to see how MS handles its Xbox when its less than a year old and has sold less than Wii U. Bet the Western media outlets are a lot kinder. The most ironic thing out of this whole mess, to me, is how investments and industry trends are supposed to be long-term commitments with ups and downs... but man the critics have jumped all over Ninty since day 1 of the Wii U launch.
There is one point however that nobody is commenting on: This is the first investment firm I've heard in a long time actually telling people to BUY Nintendo stock.
@Caryslan You're right about Activision... although sometimes the quality in their ports can be a bit lacking. Too bad these things always come back to the Evil Empire (EA), we should be talking about how there is going to be a ton of 3rd party indie games coming out in the next few years.
@Adam I was thinking the same thing about mishandling discs, etc... I'm sure we've all seen that one friend, or used to do it ourselves, who has discs out of their cases, laying around, and eventually the game stops working. Or food near a console/handheld. Who hasn't spilled one soda on a controller in their lifetime? There is something to be said about taking care of gear.
Honestly, I don't see this as much of an issue as most other people. Been dealing with systems only playing the games that were designed for it for decades. The only way that will ever really change is if all games went to a universal format like mp3. That has about as much chance of happening as monkeys flying out of my...
I'll give Iwata a pat on the back for having the maturity to not mention how cruddy the ports even were. I'm still under the impression that the likes of EA and Activision simply don't like Mr.Iwata and are getting back at Big N for years of treating the 3rd party devs horribly. Kinda conspiracy theory-ish, but I really wouldn't put it past EA with the way their corporate culture works.
I've been convinced for a while that this thing was the result of a dare or bet by R&D to see how far they could take it without bringing it to market.
Slow news week this week. I was wondering when the latest installment of "As the Pachter Turns" (or for you folks across the pond "Pachter Abby") was going to take place.
I don't think ending region-locking will cause much difference in how many games I purchase every year. I don't speak/read Japanese and have no desire to spend hours translating a menu screen in order to enjoy an afternoon of dungeon crawling. Sure, there are a few Euro-only releases that I'd be interested in, but its overall importance in the greater gaming landscape means little to me.
I'm enjoying it (the gamepad), even if its just used for maps/inventory. Something as simple as touching the screen to switch items or characters makes the game just a little bit more seamless, keeping the pacing consistent. Also a huge fan of the off-tv play, especially for the VC titles. The old resolution of the NES and SNES games look and play great on the pad. I'm sure down the road we'll start seeing N64 titles, which I'm sure will look and play just fine on the pad too. If nothing else, off-tv play is a great selling point that all games should at least offer. I guess overall I'd like to see more inventive usage of the gamepad, but that will come over time as the system ages and the devs have more knowledge and experience as to what does/doesn't work. The second screen isn't going away, companies realize that we've all got several screens around us all the time and will look to exploit that.
From a business perspective, being a 3rd party and wanting to develop games for a console it makes sense to have a good size install base. I get that. What I don't get is the power that the EA's and Activision's have gotten control of and are using that current "small install base" as an excuse to not produce games. Yet, are throwing their full support behind new consoles that have literally zero install base at this moment. Nintendo tick'd off a lot of 3rd parties back in the 80s & 90s with their policies and I think now we're seeing some petty revenge on the part of those 3rd parties.
Its going to happen. It HAS to happen. Its a tough call though, we could see a straight-up N64 port on the Wii U VC at any given time. A 3DS re-make would make sense because they would just use the same engine as OoT. Least likely is an HD port, except maybe near the end of the Wii U life cycle. I, of course, am a sucker and would buy all three.
Haven't scrolled through the comments yet, but my initial reaction says "something stinks of DLC." Its bound to happen sooner or later, and Smash is a perfect IP to use it with.
E3 became "meh" for me a long time ago. Not so much by Nintendo, but overall. The event is geared towards major media outlets too much for my tastes. I was happy to see Nintendo try something different however. And it seems to have gained them more media attention than in the past several years. Good or bad, its still attention.
This is why I'm a fanboy. Their philosophy absolutely drives detractors crazy too, which is also enjoyable if you can get past all the negative press they get from it.
This is called trying to make nice because EA just figured out that the Xbone is going to bomb and sell less than the Wii U. I, for one, will be happily watching Karma finally catch up to the most hated company in America.
