The Super Smash Bros. series has had a fair few characters join the fight over the three released titles. However, while some characters, such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Pikachu have been in all games, some of the new Melee additions did not make it over to Brawl, with the likes of Mewtwo, Roy and Dr Mario all falling by the wayside.
Of course, it is inevitable that some characters must be dropped in order to accommodate new ones and many are wondering if all characters from Brawl will be making the journey over to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
Well, in an interview with Now Gamer, the upcoming game's producer Masahiro Sakurai confirmed not all characters will be making a comeback as there isn't enough time to recreate them alongside newcomers.
Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go.
Sakurai said he understands each fighter has his or her own set of fans who really like the character and acknowledged some will be disappointed when they don't find their favourite character in the roster.
We’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it's good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans.
It's also not yet known if all the characters in the Wii U roster will be on the 3DS version as well. We know there won't be cross-platform play so it is possible the 3DS character list could be smaller than the one on Wii U due to the lesser hardware capabilities.
Which characters would you like to see stay on from Brawl, and who would you cut? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments below.

Didn't Sakurai say the roster would be the same, at least in quantity?
I hope not though. There's no sense in allowing the 3DS to hinder the Wii U version.
Not enough time? Sakurai!!!!
Meta Knight needs to return! How else will I spam Mach Tornado?
Why don't they just forget about the Wii Fit trainer?
Just gimme shulk, and I'll be happy
Not surprised and I don't blame him. While I really like Toon Link; he and other 'clones' will most likely be cut. I'll accept the loss though and the apology, thanks Mr. Sakurai.
I'm sure certain Smash fans will get a bit hurt over this...
@Burning_Spear Because she's awesome.
Wouldn't adding extra characters through DLC be a option, as long as thay are worth it and thay don't go over board with the DLC. I'm sure other might buy them, or add a different character instead of the Wii Fit trainer.
Other fighting games have had characters cut or completely changed in it's sequel. While it's natural to be upset about this, they are just fictional characters, and you can always play as them again in the older versions.
Not to mention... DLC!
I can already tell wario might not make the cut
Not sure what I would suggest to add to the SSB series to make it better, but honestly don't think an expanded roster is the answer.
Cut whoever they want except for the mainstays
Link, Samus, Mario" and add Lloyd Irvin from ToS
If they really have to drop some of the characters, these are the ones I'd be okay with:
Ice Climbers
Ike
Lucas
Ness
Sheik
Jigglypuff
Lucario
@banacheck There's no exact set of character they can add (unless they run out of digital space). It's a matter of time, and if Wii Fit Trainer gets cut out, all of the time they spent on making her character would go to waste.
Ya hear that? Cutting out Wii Fit Trainer WILL NOT HELP.
He already said he pretends to put all characters on 3DS, and that only characters like pikmin and ice climbers are giving him trouble.
Free DLC then....
For the Fire Emblem characters we're most likely saying goodbye to Ike and hello to Chrom. Marth will stay because he's practically a veteran now.
Meta Knight is another definite. Sakurai's characters take as much priority as the other Smash staples.
Sonic is practically a certainty thanks to Nintendo & SEGA's recent partnership.
@crumpledpapyrus on the first line:
"The Super Smash Bros. series has has a fair few..."
HeatBombastic
"all of the time they spent on making her character would go to waste"
True, i'll be happy with the final product no matter what, as Super Smash Bros is a really good game.
I imagine Ike will be replaced by Chrom, Wolf would be removed, and Lucario would be replaced by Zoroark. I would love for Meta Knight to return, as long as his moveset would be adjusted- he's such a cool character, but he was very overpowered in Brawl.
@Hunter-D That has has been fixed
i dnt mind losin,,,,,,, lucario,, he wont be there therll be a new pokemon addition,, jigglypuff,,shiek, solid snake wont be in the new one,,,king dedede,,i hope sonics there and maybe shadow or knuckles would be nice,
@crumpledpapyrus That was fast, haha
how about no console specific characters please. and a mii is not good enough use the time for a real character like wolf link!
I'd be okay with them dropping: Toon Link, Falco, Wolf, Pokemon Trainer, Jigglypuff, Lucario, Ike, Snake, and maybe Zelda & Lucas.
Just please don't get rid of: Olimar, ROB, Wario, G&W, Ice Climbers, Meta Knight, or K. Dedede.
Especially Olimar, I NEED him. Unless you replace him with Alph from Pikmin 3, I'd be okay with that too. I just need a Pikmin representative!
I wouldn't mind waiting longer for the characters, we don't need clones and there is always a dlc option.
As long as the roster doesnt shrink im fine with it. That you need to keep the veterans like Link, Mario etc is a given, but other than that, i dont mind a happy switcheroo. Smash Bros was always a fun romp with friends to discover querky characters and never an "evolving fighting game" like, say, street fighter, where a lost character meant many many years of lost training. Smash is much much more light hearted in that regard, anyone can find a new exciting main, even if the whole cast would get switched out, and i woulndt mind that at all. Fresh air is always nice.
I need Captain Falcon.
And please unnerf him. He wasn't the best in Melee, there was no reason to so significantly depower him in Brawl.
I think most people were expecting this.
Replace Marth with Lucina?
Keep
Falco, Gannon and shiek... All my favorite!!
@Garo go away pls
Ness is awesome
Ice climbers are very unique
Jiggly has been there forever
Lucas should be changed a little, but still remain
Ike and Lucario can go though, but make them dlc characters later
I'd be ok with them dropping Ice Climbers (although they do add variety), Olimar, and Jigglypuff. I'm fine with having clones, as they usually differ in power/speed.
Also, DLC!
Hopefully the Pokemon are all included...
They can get rid of Meta Knight. He's too strong. He breaks the game.
Leave the Wii Fit Trainer alone. Female characters are always welcome.
For me they could remove the clones. And I would rather have a lot of new characters, as if I want to use the old ones I can go back to the old games. I would also like both rosters to be different, at least a few characters exclusive to each version.
These are the ones that need to be:
Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Link, Samus, Pikachu, Fox, Mr Game & Watch, Ness, Captain Falco, Pokemon Trainer, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Meta Knight and some other I might be missing, all other would be welcome additions.
@xKing_Koopahx As long as Ganon uses his sword and has a moveset which isn't a clone of Captain Falcon's, fine by me.
@Brax Luigi, Yoshi, Falcon and Ness are all from the original Brawl, they kind of have reserved spots for this one.
This game needs DLC. D:
That sucks but I'm almost positive that all characters from the first one will be there.
@Pixel-Perfect
This! But it should be a DLC expansion pack like New Super Luigi U instead of a bunch of seperate things.
@Pixel-Perfect: No, this game pratically begs for it.
They're taking out Meta Knight, Ike, and Wolf
My Answer is Set
Now I'll check back over time to see if I'm right.
If missing those characters bothers anyone, just go back and play the other former 2 Smash Bros games as they are pretty much all the same mash button experience.
Bye bye to rob, ice climbers and mr. Game & watch, at least.
I don't want them to take out anyone, but I know this isn't happening.
I could stand to part with: Snake, ROB, Game and Watch, Wolf, and the Ice Climbers.
The clones will most likely be removed, such as Toon Link(We basically have confirmation he won't come back, since he's in the 3DS train stage), Lucas, Lucario is a clone replacement of Mewtwo. Those are pretty much the only clones.
I'm sure they'll make appropriate cuts.
Keyword: Possible
um, wouldn't after release about 2-4 weeks maybe that it would be smart to add dlc for the game, or all games not gonna have dlc? this game is important to me and alot of nintendo fans. lets get on the phucking ball already guys.
@Garo Ness and Jigglypuff are characters from the original, so they HAVE to stay.
If I could get rid of any characters, They would be Lucas, Ike, and Wolf. Pokemon trainer could be fixed though.
I hope Toon Link stays
noooo! IKE is my favorite character. Roy was in melee, and Ike in brawl. I would prefer if they get rid of Marth.
If they bring Chrom and make it similar to Ike i'd be ok though.
@Pixel-Perfect R.O.B, Game N' Watch and Ice Climbers are the 8-bit ambassadors. who do you to expect to fill their shoes?
@Koto good idea, Lucina instead of Marth
If they have DLC for both the Wii U and the 3DS then it would be cost at about 4 or 5 dollars.
Sorry, but they better not cut Ike!!! He's by far the best Fire Emblem lead, he's stared in 2 console releases across two generations, and one of Nintendo's coolest looking character designs ever (Radiant Dawn outfit).
Chrom's a good character but he's more of the same FE cookie cutter lead mold. He uses the same sword as Marth, he's of noble birth, inherits the throne... zzz. Keep Ike and update his look to Radiant Dawn, throw in his promoted outfit as an unlockable or somethin.
@C-Olimar You misunderstand. All characters in the Wii U version will be on the 3DS. The question is, what characters from Brawl will return.
So long as Yoshi is in, I'm happy!
If they're concerned about cutting characters than why don't they just do DLC for the characters they can't fit in time for release? I'd pay $5 a character in a second!
Also, if there's no cross-platform play between 3DS/Wii U versions then they don't need to have the same exact characters between them, I'm sorry.
I don't see why they need to cut anyone, i don't mind if the game is delayed a bit because of this.
It WILL disappoint me to see some familiar faces not in the new roster, but I'll get over it quickly and enjoy the game to the max like I always do.
Besides, if I want to play as some of the characters that won't be in this 4th iteration, I'll just play any of the first three. I keep my consoles, after all, and I love all of the games. This won't be a problem.
Bring Roy back, and bring Lloyd Irving from ToS and Matthew from Golden Sun. Oh and possibly Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
Looks like all the "oddball" characters are going out. By that I mean characters that just seem weird or aren't big enough "stars" to hold their own. For example Lucario is definitely getting taken out, due to the fact that they dropped Mewtwo and that Lucario will already be 2 generations backwards by the time the game comes out. Toon Link most likely isn't going to be in the game, possibly due to the fact that we see him riding the train in the 3DS version. Sad because those two were some of my favorite characters. I'm really hoping they keep in Mr. Game and Watch though because I really will be so disappointed if he's not included.
If it was up to me I wouldn't cut any character from the roster but we all know thats not gonna happen, so I'm putting my faith in Sakurai-san, he really knows what he's doing, so far SSB has not dissapointed IMO
Just give me Falco and I´m happy.
I hope we get to have Matthew from Golden Sun Dark Dawn jion smash brothers.
The characters I have always used the most in Smash Bros. are:
1) Ness
2) Ice Climbers
3) Donkey Kong
@ngamer155 Third party characters are being kept to a minimum and I'm pretty sure they won't add anyone who isn't iconic. Everybody knows who Sonic, Megaman and Snake are.. but Lloyd Irving and Sora?
A Final Fantasy character might make sense, but let's stay away from Kingdom Hearts.
I'm gonna cross my fingers Olimar, Toon Link, Lucas and Ike make the cut. Though I have a feeling they'll all be dropped due to lack of fame or in favor of a newer character...
I think Wario and Yoshi will definitely make it.
I think there could be a casualty between King Dedede or Meta Knight.
Wolf might not make it either along with the obvious Toon Link.
Ike will probably be cut in favour of Chrom.
Lucas....I'm not sure they might just keep Ness since he's been in there since Melee and forget about Lucas.
Olimar might be cut in favour of one of the newer captains...but it'll depend on his role in Pikmin 3.
Also if the character roster is different between the 3DS and Wii U I would say that increases the odds of a Golden Sun rep on the 3DS version. Since all their games are handheld ones.
As someone else mentioned, I would really like if they added new characters as dlc too. That would solve some of the time issues.
Get rid of Wolf. We don't need a THIRD Fox clone. Either totally recreate Ganondorf's moves or get rid of him. Basically, remove clones from the equation and there ya go.
Please just take as much time as you can so that we can get an epic roster of characters for both versions of the game.
@Bulby
I agree. I'm surprised they never used his magic attack that you have to reflect back at him from Ocarina of Time. Also, it'd be cool to have him transform into his Ganon form from A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time in the same way that Zelda transforms into Sheik but that's probably asking for too much. I really wonder how they decided to make him similar to Captain Falcon.
ROB is a legend in gaming and in Nintendo's history. Cutting him would be tragic.
If there isn't enough time, then do what you've done with Brawl - push back the release date. Fans will understand that quality takes time. Sure, they'll complain, but it's better for the long run.
If we're cutting characters though, then I'd say cut Toon Link and Marth. But seriously, Nintendo should probably offer some characters as free DLC if they can't fit them all in the game in enough time.
Just keep the original 8 and add a few. Melee was way too convoluted and made characters seem cheap.
@MagicEmperor yeah clones were terrible
If they can find a suitable alternative moveset for Falco, that would be awesome. But if Sakurai can't, as much as I like Falco, I would much rather have a more unique character.
That goes for any clone characters as well, minus Luigi which I am hoping is getting a new Poltergust-focused moveset.
LOL it's the same thing with Melee and Brawl.
I don't really care, the classic 8 will be there and from that i can accept almost everything until you, Sakurai, think that one character will be more fun to use than another.
Don't listen to all fanboys, now they pretend but they don't really care that much. They were so vocal even before Brawl was release and after the release everybody shutted up their mouth so just do a fun game, like always at Nintendo.
@Bulby
Man, I was just going to say everything you said in your last post about Falco and Luigi.
Sakurai you're supposed to be taking your time! lol
No rushing for deadline!
Take your time, do not rush the game!!!
I hope they sell a bundled wiiu+3ds version of the game at a decent price!
The others characters ok but lead out jiggilypuff, wii fit trainer, and Game & Watch. Pls Sakurai just put In characters that already have new games like Pikims and some Sega Characters.
I don't care what they do, as long as Ness is in it!
They're not going to cut Jigglypuff or Ness, people (they're both part of the original 12, which have never been absent).
And (to the article), Sakurai confirmed that both versions will have same sized rosters, in that E3 developer interview video.
I think they should also consider some re-balancing. Meta Knight was broken from the get go and Gannondorf needs some serious up-scaling. A slow clone of Captain Falcon isn't good enough for the King of Evil. Where's his sword? Where's his magical attacks? C'mon! Gannondorf IS!
...Try and add Shantae and Simon Belmont, please?
@Koto Good idea but that would also be one big spoiler for those yet to play FE:A. Perhaps you could have Marth with a mask this time around? but Marth would actually be designed on the Awakening Lucina (a complete character redesign)... I don't know... maybe. Hmmm.
Pokemon Trainer is another one that would probably stay. However this time around the three Pokemon are the new starters?
Instead of Toon/Young Link how about A Link Between Worlds, Link?
Mewtwo could make a comeback. Especially when you consider his new form and the fact that the latest movie is about him.
Haven't scrolled through the comments yet, but my initial reaction says "something stinks of DLC."
Its bound to happen sooner or later, and Smash is a perfect IP to use it with.
Glad I'm not the only one here who thinks the Wii Fit trainer is an awesome addition. She's just the kind of new character Smash Bros needs in order to keep their roster fun and funny! I think she's going to end up being very popular after the game is released.
@Robo-goose I'm gonna straight troll with Wii Fit Trainer. JigglyPuff is my main, but I'm going to play around with Wii Fit Trainer to piss the masses off.
Mega man will be the only 3rd party in this go so we can confirm that sonic and snake are gone, I could deal without the clones, wolf and falco even ganon as much as it pains me to say it.
I can deal without ROB, new Fire Emblem representation, and dear god don't add zoroark, that Pokemon is pure trash.
@jpfan1989 What makes you think Sonic is gone? Keep in mind, Nintendo just signed a deal with Sega to have three Sonic games exclusive to their platforms, Sonic has starred alongside Mario in several games and at this point, Sonic has very close ties to Nintendo.
I'm betting Sonic will be back. I just don't see what sense it would make to cut Sonic from the roster. He's a popular character who is a legend in gaming, has close ties with Nintendo, and is loved by the Smash fanbase. I think the Ice Climbers or Mr. Game & Watch have a greater chance of being cut then Sonic.
Also, Sakurai has never said there will only be one third-party character in SSB4. He only said that he has no intention to go overboard with the number of third-party characters. I think SSB4 will have 2 or 3 third-party characters.
Most likely, they will be Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Sonic.
Snake sadly enough, I see him leaving the roster.
@Rawk_Hawk Yep, that little dude is baddonkey . I wish he would replace the boring TP Link already.
@Garo Not Lucas or Ness, please not those.
i like the idea, of having a lot new characters i hope many cool characters will be in
Ness should be nuked. Lucas deserves to stay.
Drop as many Pokémon characters as you like Nintendo. Also any Earthbound ones while you're at it.
I think that instead of putting another weak donkey pokemon character like Lucario, Nintendo should put Mewtwo's new form....that would be pretty sweet...
I would be disappointed at first if a few select of my favourite characters from SSBB weren't present in this fourth entry, but then again, I'm the type of person that adapts to new changes.
Oh HELL NO!!! NOT META KNIGHT!!! He's awesome and is not a clone. His moves are very different from the others. If there are characters being removed. It should be those clone characters. PLEASE NOT META KNIGHT!!!
I don't think we need 2 Earthbound/Mother characters in the game that play similar to each other. Since Ness is a veteran, Lucas should get the boot.
no meta knight please
I think they should delay the game by about a year or so, like they did with Brawl, so they have more time to get it all just so perfect.
But the release of New SSB would definintely increase the sales of Wii U. We know that SSB was the top multiplayer game during the Wii times. It's a definite system seller that's why they need to put it at best condition and the same time as early as possible. If they're going to remove characters, they should really consider DLC in the future.
I hope Ike stays... although I wouldn't mind Chrom taking his place.
They should put Bucky O'Hare as an 8-bit ambassador.
Also, keep Mr. Game and Watch. He's the only one I'm genuinely cometent with!!!
@chewytapeworm WOW! You took it way back! Hahahaha Half the people on this site probably doesn't know who Bucky O' Hare is!
@pikasaiyan98 Whichever FE character they use, i just hope it isn't another sword user Marth clone. Chrom is boring, choose sombody like Vaike, Panne, or heck even Donnel!
@chewytapeworm
The Villager just might take his place.
Oh dear.
Not enough time? Since when was Sakurai concerned with development time? I say this respectfully, as I've always admired his commitment to the quality of his products- I would think time wouldn't be an issue. I understand Nintendo wants this game out by 2014, but if that means certain characters or features aren't included in this game because of it, that would be a major shame.
With that said, I do think some characters would simply have to be cut and replaced just for the sake of not having too overloaded of a roster. There's quite a few clone characters that were in Brawl that I could do without, while at the same time I don't like the idea of any player's favorite character being removed.
It's just not a fun situation for the fans.
@chewytapeworm, Rafie: I'm afraid that, at least under the current rules for being in SSB, it's no dice for Bucky O'Hare–he actually got his start as an indie comic book in the '70s, so he isn't a 'video game character'. Still, at least you didn't suggest Goku...
On a more general note, I find it almost unthinkable that any of the original 12 would be cut and would also bet heavily against anyone who was in both Melee and Brawl getting the axe. Given that, I think that Toon Link is definitely gone, with Wolf's chances of making it into SSB43U not looking too good and Snake being able to go either way. Most of the others should be safe, but I've been wrong before...
im just gona take a guess at whos gona disappear. ROB, falco or wolf, jigglypuff, lucas or ness , mr. game and watch, snake, toon link, marth.
@MasterGraveheart #90
MasterGraveheart wrote:
You should follow the news here more often. That was one of the first things Sakurai addressed.
@Hunter-D
Well Nintendo pretty much spoiled "Marth's" identity over and over anyway. Even the official Japanese site no longer hides Lucina's wallpaper with a spoiler thumbnail. Perhaps for non-Fire Emblem fans who own Wii U, they could leave Marth on the Wii U version since he first appeared on a home console game and then have Lucina appear on the 3DS version. Though personally, I'd like to see how pretty she looks on the Wii U (once they've given the game a huge boost in visuals that is; I have a feeling, or at least I'm hoping, they're just working on the system for now and most of the current models are just placeholders).
Or maybe they can pull a Wario and have Lucina appear as a "costume change" for Marth?
I honestly don't know why you all want Wolf to be taken out. Between Falco and Wolf, Falco is the real Fox clone. He is also another 'good guy' while Wolf is the villain. Wolf even has his own moveset which is nothing like Fox's moveset at all. How could he even be considered a clone? If anyone should be cut, it would be Falco. It'd be better if it was Fox and Wolf.
@Garo
you crazy Shiek can stay, im not playing as zelda if they take out her capable fighting form
@Brax Also Jigglypuff!
You all have to be thinking logically. Sure they want good characters in the series. But obscure ones will not be making it. Whatever Nintendo has in it's upcoming line up, and is a majir title, that character is in.
Expect Wario to return, because of Game and Wario. Expect Sonic because of Sonic Lost World. Possibly Ness and Lucas because of Earthbound.
But some make no sense.
Lucario, he will most likely be replaced by a similar pokemon. Wether Gen 5 or 6 is difficult to tell, as I'm sure even Nintendo wouldn't know for sure.
Then there's Toon Link. He should be satying, because of TLoZ:WW HD.
I'd say, if anyone should be going out the door, it'd be ROB and the Ice Climbers first, followed by Mr Game and Watch. They can be seen as obscure references and easily forgotten by most.
Another few characters I could see them including are:
Shulk, from Xenoblade, or the protaginast of X.
Possibly, and I mean in a rare event, we could be seeing MewThree with Mewtwo's move set updated.
Chrom replacing Ike, or being added; there's almost no way he's being excluded.
If they need another small character, Bowser Jr has been taking over a lot lately.
And, hopefully, less Star Fox characters, if they all come back it's because a new one is in the works.
Snake will possibly return due to MGS:SE3D. But you never know, he could be easily replaced by a RE:Revelations character.
@Donjwolf From a business perspective, Falco is more recognizeable acrosd the Star Fox series than Wolf.
Oh, and Jigglypuff should be replaced, maybe by Eevee? It does have lots of evolutions, but it's a stretch.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Please remember to take care when you rip them apart.
@Prof_Clayton I don't think they should remove Jigglypuff or any of the original 12. Just cuz, you know, they are the original 12.
I hope they get rid of Wario, what a bad character to use. Olimar too. Lucas is just a clone of Ness. As much as I love Star Fox they should get rid of Falco or Wolf, three characters with pretty close moves is a bit much.
@Prof_Clayton;
I don't know about that. Aside from SFA, Wolf has been in every game since SF 64 so he's just as recognizeable as Falco. As I said before, Wolf has his own moveset, unlike Falco, and he is a villain. Having a hero/villain match up in a fighting game sounds like a better idea than having a hero and another hero. That's why we have Kirby and Meta Knight, Link and Ganon, etc. Wolf should stay. Falco should get axed.
That said, King K. Rool should be in the next game as DK's villain.
Drop:
Diddy
Meta Knight
Ike
Pokemon Trainer
Snake
Wolf
Lucario
Sonic
Toon Link
R.O.B.
Lucas
I know that's a meaty list, but out with the old and in with the new. Leaving this man characters behind will keep Brawl special and give us plenty of reasons to come back to it. Also, seeing the same size of character roster but this many open slots gives many chances for more surprises!
Personally I really liked Pokemon Trainer, if they get rid of Jigglypuff they better keep Pokemon Trainer because just Pikachu and unnamed special attacker is not enough!
Sonic definitely needs to return. I would not be surprised to see Pac-Man pop up on the list of characters. I could do without Jigglypuff or Mr. Game & Watch.
@Doma
You do know thats the same Link thats been in every game, right? I doubt hes going anywhere. If anything they'll probably just use Skyward Swords Link this time.
I don't really mind that they'll be leaving some characters out since it'll make the other games still worth playing. I just hope they make characters like Ganondorf less clone-like and if they keep the Pokemon Trainer give hime/her different Pokemon.
I hope that the following stay:
Sonic
Ike
Ness
ROB
Meta Knight
Wolf
Falco
Zelda
(Peach and Luigi are likely to stay)
Marth
Mr. Game and Watch
Wario
Yoshi
Captain Falcon
I would really hate if they take away Sonic, he is one my favorites.
@Doma The problem with that is that they wouldn't be as immediately recognizable in the roster. If you think about it, the vast majority of the past rosters have been the figureheads of each of their respective series.
Fire Emblem will never be removed from the roster either since they obviously need to satisfy the Japanese gamers.
Please oh please keep Snake! With David as his voice!
@nomeacuerdo youmustbenewhere.jpg
They said the last thing with brawl, ice climbers and g&w are here to stay. You lose.
If a player has been in since melee or the original, it's safe to say they're in for good.
I wouldn't mind seeing the clones go. Beyond that, Snake is the only one I can see really leaving. Based on the Brawl roster, I would accept the loss of Lucas, Ike, Wolf, and Toon Link. I'd like to see a completely revamped Ganondorf, to lose his clone status. (I'd also like to see Falco stay, but with a few changes.) I'd also be okay with replacing Lucario with a new Pokemon who controls similiarly to him. (Kinda like how Lucario replaced Mewtwo.) Out of the clones from Melee who were removed for Brawl, the only one I'd think even has a shot is Mewtwo.
As for non-clones, I'm assuming most of them will retain, regardless. The entire N64 Smash cast are pretty much shoe-ins. I'd assume Sakurai's children, Dedede and Meta-Knight are still in. Ice Climbers, Olimar, and the Pokemon Trainer have too unique playstyles for them to vanish, in my opinion. Worst case scenerio, Olimar is replaced with Pikmin 3 characters. (Or best, has the Pikmin 3 characters, Olimar, and Louie all as skins with the character renamed "Pikmin Explorer" or something.) I assume Sonic is still in, since Sega still works pretty close with Nintendo nowadays.
This article is taking what Sakurai is saying out of context.
First off, Sakurai never confirmed cuts would be occurring, just reminding us it is a possibility. What he is saying is that not every character from Melee and Brawl will return. This does not mean we won't see the entire Brawl cast return.
Also, universal roster for the 3DS and Wii-U has been confirmed, although it is less due to size and more due hardware issues that they have to work around.
@SCAR392 (#49): Lucario is not a clone of Mewtwo. They barely share any similarities.
Lucas probably isn't staying, and sadly Toon Link probably won't either since we see him in the Spirit Tracks stage...which cuts me deep because he was by far my favorite character (I wonder how many times I've said that on this site). Hopefully Megaman will help ease my pain. Mr. Game and Watch and ROB probably won't make the cut either as they're both too obscure. Wolf and Falco are probably out too since they're both blatant Fox clones. Hopefully not Wolf, though. I like him...
I can also see Lucario being replaced by Zoroark.
The answer is pretty obvious. Deliver a fantastic playable game with as many characters as you possibly can. Wait at least six months, then release an expansion pack of DLC characters and new missions to go with the new characters.
Just make sure the final product feels like a final product and not one that was finished quickly.
Dropped these:
and include these:
I really don't get the hate for the Wii Fit trainer. What about her puts people off? She looks fast, strong and agile which are just perfect for this game. I'm looking forward to playing as her.
@Trikeboy
It's not that I hate her, it's just that adding her means some of the more interesting characters like Lyndis and Palutena will be ignore.
Okay to be honest Nintendo really should have dlc this time so when later in the game lifespan we can have more characters in the game so we dont get disappointed i can see some characters not returning but the main 12 and the non clones from melee should return as well. oh and Meta Knight please for the love of Kirby keep him
@retro_player_22
You have to think things through better than that...
Drop Ness AND Lucas, but add Ninten? Are you out of your mind?
Also, what's up with all the weird/obscure Mario series characters in your list? Cackletta, Geno, Fawful, Ludvig von Koopa?
Obscure characters should be from separate series in order to get broader representation without wasting slots.
Game & Watch, Ice Climbers and Villager all make more sense than most of your list.
@retro_player_22 The thing is, Wii Fit trainer is recognizable to a large selection of Wii users and could help draw them into the game. This is why she was revealed at E3. The casual gamers get someone they recognize. Your list is filled with obscure characters that many don't know the name of.
Replace Jigglypuff with Meowth and we'll call it even.
@CJ_Vick Jigglypuff is a series staple character, I doubt it will be removed
"so it is possible the 3DS character list could be smaller than the one on Wii U due to the lesser hardware capabilities."
not really, didn't they already say they were making both games have the same characters? and that was why they were toning down moves on the wii U version so it would also work well on the 3ds?
@Trikeboy Maybe, but c'mon, IT'S JIGGLYPUFF. Who's gonna miss him?
@retro_player_22
Lyndis never really had a chance anyway. Think about it, she's a lord from a GBA Fire Emblem that is over ten years old, and even if we take Fire Emblem: Awakening out of the mix, she's still got to compete with veterans like Marth, Roy, and Ike for a roster spot. Her best chance of making the playable roster of a Smash Bros game would have been back in Brawl, since her game was more recent.
As it stands now, she only has a chance to make it in as an assist trophy again. She's got way too much competion at this point to be a top pick.
As for Palutena, she's not a bad choice but I think Medusa would be the better choice. Medusa was the main villain of the first Kid Icarus, was a villain in Uprising, and is both a female character and evil. She could easily fit in as something that is lacking in Smash's roster.
@CJ_Vick Me, I worked out a great strategy with Jigglypuff.
Seems like Sakurai is doing the best he can to make the very best versions of the games as possible. I have no problem with them cutting the roster, especially with the promise of new characters. It'll be sad to lose a few favorites, but think of the all new ones you will have. I'm all for whatever he decides!
As long as the original SSB characters are there (since SSB is the only game I own from the series), I'm happy.
More people really need to understand how much work adding a character really is. When you add a new character, you alter the balance of the game. Ever other charcter then has to be adjusted even slightly to make sure everything remains fair. Not only that, but it requires a lot of work and time to figure out where the unbalances are. Most of the time, they require multiple versions to get the balance right. That's why Street Fighter saw yearly releases, because they had to constantly tweak the gameplay, add more characters, and tweak again. It's definitely not that easy. That's not even going into the design work for all characters in a crossover game like this. The reason they have clones is so they can add more characters without significantly altering the balance, and so they don't have to design a character from scratch. I'm sure there's even more to it that I don't know, so I hope you can understand even a little that adding new characters is going to be extremely difficult for them.
I will be most displeased if I can't hear the crowd vigorously chant "Ness... Ness... Ness... Ness... Ness!" Especially since Earthbound is making its way to the WiiU VC. And so lets keep in Lucas too and work on getting Mother 3 outside of Japan.
I hope Wolf, Toon Link, and Dedede are cut. Two of which are glorified clones, while the other is simply there because Sakurai wanted him in Smash 64.
I'm so sure there's a huge number of people out there who's best fighter is Dedede, or even wanted him in the first place for that matter.
I have always wondered why Jigglypuff has been in all the games!!!!
Cut that character out of the roster if anything!
If only there were some downloading mechanism that could add these new/returning characters. I'd pay for a character as long as it's an extra to a finished game.
Those worried about this game having many cuts shouldn't worry. Sakurai has stressed that he hates cuts and doesn't like to do them; a contrast from his attitude pre-Brawl. Like I said before, this isn't even a confirmation that Brawl veterans will get the axe since he referenced to everyone, not just Brawl characters. Another thing is that on multiple occasions, Sakurai has stated he wants to include as many characters as possible.
I am very well aware of how hard it is to add and balance characters and I'm not the one here to expect sixty-five characters here, but if cuts do occur, they will be minimal.
I think the only one at risks are Snake, Sonic, Toon Link, Ike and Lucario and I doubt the latter two are going. I expect no more than three cuts at the end of the day.
Really hoping the Ice Climbers stay on.
Sakurai, you remove Olimar and I'LL KILL YOU.
Oh no! Don't tell me Mario's getting the boot!
As for newcomers...how about Balloon Fighter? It's about time he made a comeback. There's also a good chance of Zoroark making an appearance.
But the one question I want answered: will Scizor ever make the cut? Oh, yes, I went there!
@retro_player_22
Your list of included characters is god awful, bland, boring, and just plain bad. Sorry.
How about this magical plan though; no dropped characters and instead of wracking your brain on how to balance the game sakurai, just release it as a beta and let the players show you whats balanced and what isn't. THEN periodically add new characters to it so no one has to be disappointed. But then again that'd take console games doing something smart, which isn't gonna happen anytime soon.
I think Lucina is better than Marth to represent fire emblem awakening, improves the gender balance in the game, also maybe add that Bayonetta chick in order to cross promote since they are publishing her game
Side note, I wish my controller was faster. Internet to miiverse to eshop to netflix should be seamless. #frommycontroller
Wii Fit Trainer looks great and fits into the main goal of Smash Bros. Bring all the quirky & colourful characters that best represent Nintendo's history (albeit recent for Wii Fit Trainer) into one crazy universe and all.
@Koto Hmmm, you make some great points. I too would love to see how Lucina turns out. I think an alternate costume could definitely work.
@CanisWolfred Indeed it is a very hard and stressful job as Mr. Sakurai recently stated. Still discussing characters is usually one of the more entertaining parts of the very long road to release and it's fun when you hear a lot of... different names.
I think he's making a great quality game that I'll end up enjoying for many, many years.
In the meanwhile, I'd love the idea of adding characters in the future, through dlc or something. Character and stage additions would make the game incredibly valuable, even if it is just 1 character a year, or maybe twice a year. That would be just awesome.
@Trikeboy #145 Is this a joke? Village boy and Wii Fit girl are about as bland and forgettable as you can possibly get.
You say it was done to appease casual gamers, but that segment of players couldn't care less. It's foolish to think these characters would be instantly recognizable to them. They don't even have proper names!
Edit: It's gonna be pretty embarrassing to hear the commentator utter and chant these no-names...
How can you look at the fighting footage of Wii Fit Trainer and think she is bland? She looks fun to play as.
@LuigiMan200 Why is this news? theres a certain thing called DLC, ANYONE can be added using that, so Sakurai......USE IT!
@EarthboundBenjy DAT Pic........ Rakuga Kids, thanks to N64 emulators that is now one of my favorite games.
@retro_player_22 Some of those are doable, but most are just wishful thinking, Geno was created by Square so he will never be in a smash bros uniess nintendo buys the rights to him. Fawful FTW, that is the most hilarious boss of ANY Nintendo game, "I am the Mustard of your Doom! I HAVE CHORTLES!
@Trikeboy Well, the voice over and image certainly IS imo. Her move-set and fight style might not be too bad though.
@BudDudSlash hell no, i need me some meta knight and Sonic, I will miss snake but i can live without him, I loved wolf so drop falco instead
Please don't get rid of Ike, Fire Emblem needs more love, not less. And add Lyndis!
@banacheck I think that is a great idea. Get the game running good, release it, then add some dlc characters later.
Personally, I think a couple of clones (including either Falco or Wolf) need to be cut.
I expect to see Ike cut in favor of a character from Awakening, probably Chrom. As much as I like him, Lucario will likely also get the axe in favor of a 6th gen Pokémon.
@Doma How popular were characters like the Ice Climbers, Mr. Game and Watch, R.O.B., or Pit before they were included in Smash Bros? Sometimes they need to think outside the box. Heck, we probably wouldn't have gotten a new Kid Icarus game or Western releases in the Fire Emblem franchise if it wasn't for their inclusion in Smash Bros.
Seriously Spot pass or even DLC over the next few years would be perfect if time is the problem. This would also be a fantastic way to promote new franchise entries.
Also can we really not have alternate costumes like Wario had, that way you could design all the clone characters and simply alter the appearence of the core fighter whilst keeping the moveset.
Well since we know the roster isn't getting any bigger we know at least 3 will be dropped. The 10 originals from the first SSB should be there, and I'd like to see the 2 other pokemons go (IE lucario and pokemon trainer). I don't want to see characters from previous installments come back (like mewtwo, etc) and I would REALLY like Wario to go PLEASE! I cannot stand him and he is my character to complete on the easiest setting just to get him out of the way!
I don't want them to get rid of a Pikmin character altogether. I wouldn't mind having different characters being cut for 3DS and WiiU, with different new ones added in the same way they're doing different stages. That would convince me to buy both!
With such a huge library of characters to choose from anch each of these character having its own fan base obviously there's going to be some people dissapointed when certain charcters are left out.
But in this age of dlc, Nintendo can create an initial roster then looking at fan feedback via Miiverse and Forums etc and bring additional characters to the game at a later date for a small fee.
@Rumbler You say Lucas and Ness are completely different but Toon Link should get the boot? I agree that he probably won't appear in the roster as he is now a stage prop, but Toon Link is vastly different from Link. Not in moveset, but in movement. He's leagues faster than his adult counterpart and can jump much higher, though his attacks are weaker to compensate.
By the way, I think Lucas will be dropped, but I don't think he SHOULD be dropped. He is my second favorite character, losing only to Toon Link. Perhaps Ness can have his moveset altered to encorporate less yoyo and more PSI power (that wonderful, wonderful Charged Up + A move Lucas has) if Lucas does get dropped.
I hope Sakurai gets a giant holiday after this game. The amount of stress us fans have put on him for what characters to include is probably making him go crazy!
@Rumbler: You haven't encountered my quirky sense of humour, have you? I know full well that Mario is in it (Why wouldn't he be? He's Nintendo's most iconic character). I was just making a little joke there.
@SnackBox: I can only imagine the tens of thousands of oddball requests he must find on social media!
Possible example: PLZ PUT CRASH BANDYCOOT IN SMASH BROS
Another possible example: Smash Bros. won't be complete without Jake the Dog!
I could definitely cope with losing ROB, Toon Link, Pokemon Trainer, Snake, and Ice Climbers.
I really want them to keep King Dedede, Lucario, and Wolf, but out of those I think only the first will survive.
Ot wont happen, but maybe bar a few seen before staple characters, Mario, Samus etc maybe they should just go a different rout and introduce a whole new roster. By default, at least.
A load of new characters, with new moves, would mean more or less everybody will lose out on favorite characters but gain a more or less whole new roster to learn and enjoy.
Of coure Nintendo could bring back old fav's and some less popular characters with thier dedicated fans by releasing multiple dlc packs. How cool would it be to have Map and character packs based on older Smash Bros games? For example SSB Melee Map pack with levels found in that game, ans SSB Melee character Pack containing Character found in Melee but not included in SSBU.
In the long term everyone will eventually get the characters they love the most, and in the fairness of character balancing online matchmaking coud have a simple filter to restrict the use of character packs.
I can see ROB, Ike, Lucas, Wolf, and Falco getting booted.
To all those that would do away with Jigglypuff; it will never happen. The Pokemon Company would actually remove all Pokemon characters should they remove her simply because she is a smash hit in Japan.
Personally, I'd do away with any clone character. There will be minimum one representation per past franchise included. @Garo - Ness isn't going anywhere.
Things I will do if Toon Link doesn't make the cut (which I doubt he will as he is a clone and he is seen driving the Spirit Train in one of the courses)
1. Stare in disbelief
2. Shake my head in disbelief
3. Cry for a while
4. Swear that I won't buy the game
5. Buy the game anyways (both 3DS and Wii U)
6. Cry some more
7. Commit seppuku with my samurai sword
8. Suck it up and play as regular Link instead
9. Find a new character to main (maybe Villager, for sure Little Mac if he's included)
10. Repeat process if my new main isn't in the next Smash Bros
@Garo NOT THE ICE CLIMBERS! they're my absolute favourites in smash bros
Ooh you guys are upsetting me!!!! LOL Do NOT drop JigglyPuff. She has been in the game since the start all the way up to this point. Don't drop her because you all can't beat her. Drop those clone characters. Jiggly is a character of her own. I hope she stays and if she does...I'm gonna remember all of you who wanted her gone and REAP HAVOC!!!! Hehehe
They should totally add Ice King from Adventure Time. Just saying...
Please bring back Sonic
This is okay: variety is the spice of life!
@Rafie That last part completely discredited everything you just said. O__o
@Caramel No it didn't. He's actually quite popular. Not the point though. I was completely joking! I wouldn't be serious about putting non video game characters in a game.
@Highwinter It doesn't need to be iconic, especially shown in Melee, where not a lot of people knew who Roy or Marth were, besides I didn't know who Snake even was until Brawl so it doesn't apply to everyone knowing who Snake is. Lloyd Irving was in one of the best selling games in the Tales series and I've seen lots of demands for him, so why not? Sora is pretty well known too because the Kingdom Hearts series sold over 17 million copies, so it's not too bad.
@ngamer155 I said third party characters should be iconic, not Nintendo ones. Sora and Lloyd may have been in some modern games that were fairly popular, but that doesn't make them well known and certainly not iconic. You may not have known who Snake was, but that doesn't change the fact that he's from one of the biggest franchises in gaming history that dates back to the 80's.
I don't know who Lloyd is...but I know Luke! How awesome would it be if Luke made it to the roster?
@Highwinter Anything can happen, so lets see...
@Caramel
Lloyd's from Tales of Symphonia, which seems to be the "favourite" amongst Tales fans (though Tales of the Abyss was amazing as well)
The cool thing about Lloyd is that all of his moves are the "classic" Tales moves that seem to be in every Tales game, which makes him very ideal. Moves such as Demon Fang, Sonic Thrust, Sword Rain, Beast etc. He seems very appropriate for a Smash game for this reason.
I'm gonna call it right now.
If anyone is gonna get cut, I say:
1.Toon Link
2.Wolf (I could actually see him staying and having his moves changed)
3.Ike (Probably going to be replaced by a different character from Fire Emblem)
4.Lucario (Probably going to be replaced by a different Pokemon)
5.Snake
6.Sonic (Hopefully not)
I seriously doubt Falco, Ness, Ice Climbers, Jigglypuff, Mr. Game & Watch and Marth are going to be cut considering they've been in at least 2 of the other games.
@EarthboundBenjy Oh I see. Well, if they introduce Lloyd, then I wouldn't be as invested in him then if they had chosen Luke, but that would only be because I haven't played ToS...
If MG&W (Mr. Game & Watch) is in it, I'm fine.
I'm a Kirby user, so I feel safe that my primary choice is safe. My second favorite, Marth, I'd like to see return. I really don't care who else gets dropped. I would like to see Krystal put in instead of Falco or Wolf, but that's it.
If we go purely by how many boxes there are on the character select screen (meaning Samus, Shiek and Pokétrainer all count as one character each) then this is how many characters each game had:
N64 had 12
Melee had 25
Brawl had 35
So SSB4 should have at least 40 or so characters... I think anything above 45 is unreaslistic.
In N64, 8 characters were available from the start: Mario, DK, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu. Except for Yoshi, all of these characters are already confirmed in the game. I think it's safe to say Yoshi will definitely be in too.
There were 4 unlockable characters: Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff.
Luigi and C.Falcon are famous Smash icons at this point, and Ness is the main representative of the Mother series.
Jiggly is an old Pokémon though, and there are hundreds of Pokémon to choose from to take up character slots. But Jiggly will probably be in due to the legacy she has in the Smash games. Plus she's now a Fairy type, which might rekindle her popularity in some way.
I think it's safe to say these 12 characters are in this game.
In regards to newcomers to Melee, these characters were available from the start: Bowser, Peach, Ice Climbers, Zelda/Shiek.
Bowser is already confirmed, and I think it' safe to assume that Peach and Zelda are back (if only to keep up the level of female characters).
If Zelda is her Skyward Sword self, it might be the case that Shiek won't return. But I think this is unlikely. If Zelda's in, Shiek's in too.
So what of the Ice Climbers? We'll add them to our list of "maybe"s.
So the unlockable Melee newcomers were:
Marth, Falco, Ganondorf, Mr Game & Watch, Dr. Mario, Young Link, Pichu, Roy, Mewtwo
Five of these characters were cut from Brawl. I think it's safe to say they're not coming back, unfortunately.
This leaves Marth, Falco, Ganondorf and G&W.
I personally think that these four are very likely to return. Everyone mentions G&W as a potential cut, but I don't agree. He represents a very important stage in Nintendo's handheld market before the Game Boy was around, and as far as "unique" characters go, he's probably the most unique of the lot. There's even a game called "Game & Wario" coming out, mashing up G&W with Wario Ware, so the Game and Watch system itself hasn't become irrelevant. I think he's in.
So. Brawl newcomers available from the start were: Diddy Kong, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Meta Knight, Pokétrainer, Ike, Dedede, Wario, Olimar, Lucas.
Pit is already confirmed in. I think Diddy Kong is definitely still in, especially with Donkey Kong Country Returns, and a sequel to that on the way.
Meta Knight and Dedede... They have been playable in a recent game (Dream Land Wii) and they give Kirby more representation than just Kirby alone. I think they're both in.
Zero Suit Samus is probably still in. In her Other M design, since they seem to love that game so much.
Wario.... well, Wario's just Wario. Some love him, some hate him. I love him He could go either way but it's likely he's still in. Let's put him on our "maybe" list.
With Pikmin becoming bigger and better than ever on Wii U, there will definitely be some Pikmin representation. It could be Olimar, it could be Alph, but it doesn't really matter who it is. There is no doubt that a Pikmin captain is in.
Ike... Path of Radiance isn't relevant any more with Awakening being the biggest thing to happen to Fire Emblem in a long time. He could go the way of Roy. Ike's a definite "Maybe".
Lucas... it's unlikely they'll add more Mother representation. And if they cut Mother from two characters to just Ness alone, then there's gonna be some angry Mother fans. With Mother 2 being rereleased for the first time on the Virtual Console, I don't think Mother has lost any fans. Ness and Lucas should still be in together, I think.
That leaves Pokétrainer. I think he's out. At least the combo of Charizard, Ivysaur and Squirtle are out. Maybe they'll have another trainer from a different gen, or maybe just cut the concept altogether. I don't think a lot of people were very fond of the three character system anyway. He's a likely cut.
Okay. Let's move on to Brawl unlockables, who were: Lucario, Wolf, Toon Link, ROB, Snake, Sonic.
Lucario's out. No one cares about Gen IV any more., we're two gens ahead. He's likely to be replaced with a new Pokémon.
Toon Link... With Wind Waker being rereleased, Toon Link is gonna be as popular as ever. We did see a Spirit Tracks stage in the trailers where Toon Link was a stage element though. Doesn't mean much - Brawl had 75m with DK was a stage element and that didn't mean anything. It's difficult to say. Let's say "maybe".
Wolf - Star Fox hasn't had anything happen since Brawl came out. Maybe no-one cares about Star Fox any more and Wolf will be cut. He does represent a villain though, so that might mean he'll return just so there are more villains in the game. Let's say "maybe".
ROB - Ehhh... I don't know what to say about ROB. He represents old NES games. But remember, the Ice Climbers do too. In Brawl, Pit, Ice Climbers and ROB all represented early NES games. Now, Pit instead represents a new 3DS game... so for NES representation, it's either ROB or Icies... and I think between them, most people would pick Icies. I would. ... ROB's a "maybe".
And now the big ones... Snake and Sonic.
I have no idea. It all depends on Sakurai and the bureaucracy involved with 3rd parties. I think if only one of them were to return, it would be Sonic and not Snake. But I really can't say at the moment. They're both maybes.
So here is our "Maybe" list: Ice Climbers, Wario, Ike, Toon Link, Wolf, ROB,Snake, Sonic
And here is our "Probably gonna be cut" list: Pokétrainer, Lucario
That's nine characters in all.
So, from Brawl's 35 characters, we have 26 if ALL of these are cut.
Villager, Wii Fit Trainer and Mega Man add up to 29 characters in all that are so far either confirmed or "very likely" in the game.
To reach up to Brawl's number, we're gonna have to add 6 more newcomers. To reach 45, our theoretical maximum, we'll need 16 newcomers... which is, coincidentally, precicely how many newcomers were introduced into Brawl (if you count ZSS).
@EarthboundBenjy Wow what a realistic list you have here. I completely concur with it. You have a point about Toon Link. I don't mind him being in the game. With WWHD on the horizon, he will definitely be on the game. I can tell. Seriously though, what other Pokemon do you think should be in here?
I fully expect the original 12 to be on the game (no matter how much I dislike jigglypuff) I also expect characters to be swapped out, like how young link went to toon link &roy to marth. I think pokemon trainer
should return with different starter pokemon should also add a female pokemon trainer too. I think clone characters should either be download content, or pick them the same way you pick zero suit samus, hold a button before the game start and it changes to that character. Or make a clone a costume change and the moveset is just altered
I'd be perfectly O.K. if they dropped Jigglypuff, R.O.B., Toon Link, Falco, Wolf, Ike, Wario, & Lucas. I'd be O.K. if Lucario, Pokemon Trainer, Jigglypuff, & Ice Climbers were replaced.
@Nightstar1623 Forget you man! JIGGLYPUFF ALL DAY!!!
I don't see this as too big of news. They left out some players last time too.
While I can play (to a certain extent) with every character, I'm really more of a Mario guy, so, unless they for some reason nix the overall'd wonder, I think I'll be okay.
@Rumbler Passionate? You pretty much wrote a mini-essay there bud. Kudos.
I think that maybe including other Nintendo game characters would be a good idea, i don,t know maybe:the wii fit trainer was a good idea(espetially her final smash:"We Fit")
i'd like baby bowser (Bowser Jr.)
i don't know maybe he attacks withe the paintbrush he stole fro professor E Gadd and his final smash could be "Paint Rain" paint starts raining and covers the whole stage and makes the characters sink just like the piantas in mario sunshine i don't know
WAVE RACE MAYBE IN THE GAME HE OR SHE WOULD BE A NEW CHARACTER IN SSBU
@EarthboundBenjy STAR FOX IS BEING MADE BY PLATINUM GAMES WILL START AT 2014 I HEARD SO WOLF WILL BE IN THE SUPER SMASH BROS WII U GAME
Well my guess all the usual ones replaced in melee will get the boot. Such as Ike with Chrom (even though I just played thru FE:PoR and RD and have come to appreciate him), pokemon trainer, lucario (as was mewtwo), I wish jigglypuff would be replaced, toon link will get cut, wolf might get cut (replaced with Krystal?), probably ROB and lucas.
I honestly don't know who else to cut tho...the roster better be a LITTLE bit bigger than brawl...
In the modern world of DLC, there's no such thing as "not enough time."
Seriously though, I'd quite happily pay for character DLC for the new Smash Bros. provided it's reasonably priced. Of course, free would be good too.
Ice Climbers
Lucas
Ness
Sheik
Jigglypuff
Lucario
I would love them cut, rather than anyone else D:
@Pikminsi
If Meta Knight doesn't make it I might actually cry
@rmeyer Don't you mean the Original 12?
They were: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Pikachu, Fox, Yoshi, Samus, Kirby (end of characters unlocked from start), Luigi, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and Ness.
The 3 new additions are: Wii Fit Trainer, Animal Crossing Villager, and Mega Man.
They said the same number of characters would be there (35), and the ones confirmed for SSBU and SSB3D are:
Mario, Donkey Kong, Fox, Pikachu, Link, Pit, Kirby, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Animal Crossing Villager, Mega Man, And Bowser.
Out of those 12, 9 were in Brawl.
So, 23 characters (the 9 ones confirmed aren't included) can come back from Brawl and only 3 characters need to be eliminated (unless more characters that aren't from Brawl are announced).
I think R.O.B., Lucario, and Wolf should go.
If you add in the other 5 from the original, nothing would change except only 18 characters (not including those 14 already said) can come back, but the number needed to be eliminated is still the same as all those other 5 were in Brawl.
Everyone who is saying "get rid of Jigglypuff" or "Jigglypuff wont make it in" is stupid.
Puff was in since the very 1st game in the very 1st 12.
Puff is 100% certain to be in this game.
It would be stupid to drop her now...
the original n64 roster should be in, don't drop ness for god sake >_<
I don't think too many people would be terribly upset if clone characters like Wolf and Ganondorf missed the cut in favor of some new blood.
R.O.B DeDeDe Lucario Wolf Ike
Bye Bye
@ngamer155 Matthew? Really? Not piers or Isaac or Garet? Please.
Zelda characters need to stay. You can't have the triforce incomplete. Sorry but not happening. Just revamp ganondorf the way he SHOULD be. (Btw he's not that slow. He's actually quite fast) I would really like to see more metroid characters. But honestly, there's so many fire emblem characters it'd be impossible to please everyone. In fact there's no way to please everyone with a game like this
@krunchykhaos Isaac would be a great choice as well, but Im leaning more toward Matthew.
i would like sonic the hedgehog, shadow the hedgehog, and silver the hedgehog. they would perfectly fit in the storyline (if there is one) and their moves would fit in too.
@EarthBoundBenjy
I was just about to write pretty much exactly the same thing, but instead decided to read through everyone else's and found yours. I pretty much agree with you completely X)
So many people are saying to drop people like Marth, Jigglypuff, Ice Climbers, Game&Watch, when really it just doesn't make any sense to cut them. Asking or expecting them to cut the characters who have been in at least 2 (if not all) of the games is really just... I truly am trying to find a word other than stupid ^ ^;
Let's see... Olimar was already confirmed in the new roster, so he's in.
Ike, my little sister is an Ike user so I really don't wanna say this, but it really is likely that he is to be cut and replaced, probably by Chrom.
I used to think that Toon link was probably going to be cut, but your point makes sense, with Wind Waker HD coming out
I personally think Wolf will be cut, and maybe replaced with Krystal, but if they don't cut him, I think it would make sense to at least change his Final smash -_- All three Star Fox Characters having the exact same Final Smash was just... stupid? I swear where did all my Vocabulary go XD
R.O.B- I really have nothing to say about R.O.B, I personally pretty much never played him :/
As for Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, I think they're really unique, I especially liked Wii Fit Trainer, her moveset looks far-out, and she just , makes me laugh in general X) Villager looks like an evil little kid XD
Some characters that I'd really love to see back are Marth, Zero-Suit Samus, Toon Link, and Pichu from Melee (I know Pichu's unlikely but I can dream right X) ]
A character that I would really like to see join is Bayonetta. (If Snake made it into Brawl, why not her? X)
After rereading this comment I realize that it really has no point X) But I'll post it anyway, and maybe later I'll rewrite it XD
But if anyone happens to be reading this, go find EarthBoundBengy 's comment, it's probably the , ost logical and thorough comment on here XD
I'd really want Ike. I'd want Ike over Marth, and somebody, at least 1 person, from the Fire Emblem games has to return. Ike was just awesome, and I loved using him and Great Aether despite the delay in his attacks, and in Brawl they used his Path of Radiance outfit, so logic would only state that they'd repeat their past practices and bring him back but this time with his Radiant Dawn form.
My main thing has always been it'd be cool to have both the hero and the villain from the games to square off in Smash bros, like Fox and Wolf, so I think an Ike and Zelgius would be a nice inclusion.
Is there any chance of there being dlc later on so we can get more characters that would be sweet!
TOM! NOOK!! that is all
They should simply remove the characters that duplicate fighting styles of other characters. Toon Link, Falco, Wolf, Lucas, and Marth, Ike, or Roy (not sure which, never played Fire Emblem)
I think Ness, and Lucas should stay also Sonic, and I'd like to see Tails from Sonic in it, infact if a character had to be removed I'd want Snake, Ice Climbers, King Dedede, and maybe Ike out.
I agreed with TheBlueBlur Ness and Lucas should stay. And I also would like to see Sonic and Tails in the game to.
@Captain_Balko i feel you.
wouldnt it be the strangest thing if tempo from harmoknight was in? btw, harmoknight is a great game.
It's an absolute given the original 12 from the first game will stay as long as the game runs:
Mario, Link, Pikachu, Kirby, DK, Fox, Yoshi, Luigi, Samus(power suit), C. Falcon, Ness, and Jigglypuff
as for the ones getting cut, most likely it will be clones or characters that have newer versions of them:
Falco, Wolf, T Link, Lucas, Lucario (zoroark), ganondorf (demise?), and Ike (chrom)
and then imo I think Pkmn trainer, Snake, ROB, and Sheik are out
G&W, Ice climbers, Bowser, Marth, Peach, and Zelda have been strong since Melee, and Diddy Kong, Pit, Wario, Meta Knight, Olimar, and King Dedede have become essentials in recent games. And last, Sonic will probably stay what with his new partnership with Nintendo.
This is the only game I will ever, EVER buy the day it comes out. Take all the time to make it the best you can. It would be worth the wait by even another year in my opinion. Agreed with comment #237, cut the clones. The 3DS is going to have a small selection anyways. Make it count!!! PLEASE add Golden Sun to 3DS.
Get rid of:
Wario
Lucas
Jigglypuff
Lucario
Ivysaur
Squirtle
Wolf
ROB
Snake
and Game & Watch
Keep:
All the obvious essentials
Charizard
Dedede
Sonic
Diddy Kong
Meta Knight
Toon Link (or another Alternate form of Link)
Ike (Or an equivalent)
ADD:
Mewtwo (x&y version)
Toad
Zoroark
Shadow
Tails
And then either a goron, a zora, or a deku; or just make a Masked Link that can switch through all 3
Please don't cut peach jigglypuff and zelda
@Garo Ice Climbers are meant to represent the Retro Era of Nintendo. Keep them. And have you even played EarthBound? I suggest you keep your mouth shut about Ness & Lucas unless you've played one of their games. Seriously. You want to cut out 2 series from the roster completely.
WHAT??!? Why the hell did you replace wario for WII FIT TRAINER??!?
@rlopez1996 That only leads US to believe how little you know aboutWario's history with Nintendo & why his spot is considered aguarantee in the next game
@Scungun88 Where do I BEGIN in correcting all those mistakes?! Most characters you would want out are most likely making a return. Why remove Squirtle & Ivysaur... but leave in Charizard? Are you stating charizard has the potential to deserve hisvery own slot as a SINGLE character, which is totally wrong?
Just keep
Ness
Lucas ( don't be hating'😥)
King DDD
And Shiek
I'll be fine if Toon and Ness get in😊!!
Of course, Ness and Lucas should stay in the game, but what doesn't make since is that, why say Ness, should be on the Wii U version, and Lucas, on the 3DS when Sakurai specifically said characters that are added to the roster, would be on the Wii U version and 3DS version. And one other thing Lucas, technically isn't a clone of Ness, he just has PK Fire, PK Thunder, and PK Starstorm, just like Ness does. I know moves fighting moves, that are not even simular to Ness' and Not only one of the PSI moves, but his weapons too. So yeah.
Honestly I dont care what people say about ike because he is actually a very good character if U know how to use him hes not always about the power house U know! well anyways I think ike should be in the knew smash cause theres only 2 fire emblem poeple in smash.
@MrWalkieTalkie Out of my favorite 5 favorite charaters you want to get rid of 4 of them. Mine charaters are Wolf, Lucas, Pokemon Trainer, Toon link and olimar
My personal reasons why I want 5 charaters to return though most of them are actually on the popular list of ones that should leave.
Toon Link because I grew up with zelda the windwaker and it was 1 of the first two video games I ever knew. With Windwaker hd out he has very good chances of returning (Yes I know he already has). Everyone was saying because of the spirit tracks prop he wouldnt come back but on 75 mm we had a donkey kong prop and It didnt change a thing.
Next Pokemon Trainer. Firered being the other of those 2 games I knew all the starters have a very special place in my heart. The choices of which starters in which stages were great. Charizard being the coolest Squirtle being the cutest even though blastoise is really cool and ivysaur being in the middle. I dont have any good points on why he should return though.
Next Lucas. Mother 3 being a very good game although I have never played it. At the time i played the most brawl I was really into chuggaconroy. I watched his lp of mother 3 and the game touched my heart. Lucas's heart breaking story really made me love him in brawl. Plus his Up and down smashs feel extrememly powerful to use and ness doesnt really have that. With only three Mother games I dont see any reason as to remove lucas. If one on these 5 had to go Lucas would probably be the easiest to deal with.
Next is wolf from the star fox games. Now growing up I was obsessed with wolves so wolf quickly became a favorite on mine. He is a common one to get rid of but he his very unique. He has different speeds, different smashes, similar specials to fox but still more different than Falco is. Falco is probably stuck in the series even though I feel he is more unoriginal than wolf as far as brawl goes. Plus wolf being the only villian representing Starfox he should stay.
Next is olimar who has no reason to leave with pikmin 3 out very recently. His games are awesome and hes already been in a game so I feel it would be simpler to just use olimar that try to make a reskin of him in the form of alph
Anyway thats my 5 favorite charaters from Brawl and my first world problems as why they should stay.
A list of characters that, from what I can tell, will most likely be replaced:
Wario. He's funny and everything, and fun to use, but replaceable. His game series doesn't stand out.
ROB. He's one of my personal favourites but again, he doesn't stand out as a real keeper like Sonic or Bowser.
Lucario. He was all the roar when Brawl was made 6 years ago but, just like Mewtwo, he's outdated. I wouldn't mind them bringing back Mewtwo but again, both these characters are extremely likely to be replaced.
Ike. He's a support character for a main series, so it's extremely likely he will be replaced by another Fire Emblem support character.
Snake. Nintendo basically confirmed that he's being cut and replaced by Mega Man. YES!
Wolf. Same reason as Ike, except since his series already has 2 characters, they will probably just replace him with someone from a different series entirely. Also, Wolf never really stood out too much.
Pokemon Trainer. If he's not confirmed by now, he's cut. Like ROB, he's one of those characters that stands out, but you can tell he won't be moving on. He was just an attraction for Brawl cause you could play as freaking Charizard, but it's gotten old now.
Meta Knight. He's overpowered and looks freaking awesome, but it's to a point where he almost outclasses every other character by popularity alone, never mind insane attacks. Nintendo loves diversity in games, especially SSB, so they aren't going to put in someone if everyone's going to obviously pick him over everyone else again. Meta Knight, you were a sexy baddonkey and you will be missed.
Captain Falcon. He's hard to read, but he hasn't had a popular game in years. On top of that, all the main series characters have been announced already, so at this point I will be very surprised if the Captain is in fact in the game.
That's my list, and I will be surprised if any of these characters make it through. May they all be remembered.
Please watch the profanity — TBD
I think it's dumb that Toon Link made it.
@Captain_Toad
There's a Tamama in your profile pic!
@VanguardSoul
I think it's dumb you exist.
(Sorry for that, forgive me?)
