This is happening with pretty much most big mobile games with in-app purchases. At least on Apple for the time being due to the currencies fluctuating.
@PikaPhantom
Content that was planned for previous updates being pushed forward into newer updates is nothing new in Minecraft’s development schedule. It happens all the time.
They already admitted that more and more ideas kept popping up that they wanted to implement and that’s why the Caves & Cliffs update was split in the first place.
Even now features that were planned for updates from half a decade ago or more are still waiting to be implemented after being left in limbo.
The point is, plans change. Things take a different turn when you least expect it and game development is no exception.
@Dragwhite Journey’s is NOT a soft-reboot or reboot at all, far from it. It has so much continuity connecting it to all the past seasons I really don’t know how anyone can make that claim
@Krull “Also, Arceus doesn’t introduce a new generation”
Arceus literally introduced 10 new Pokemon to Generation 8. No spin-off game would ever do this. If GameFreak themselves say it’s mainline then that’s your answer.
@VoidofLight The entirety of Sword & Shield leaked and was datamined extensively, on top of all the controversy from the Treehouse interview gameplay and it still sold 22+ million copies.
@BloodNinja I don’t ever expect Pokemon to adopt the use of a full party battles unless GameFreak truly wanted to shake things up. The most we got was triple battles where it was 3v3. They were pretty fun in Gen 5.
@The-Chosen-one Online trading exists but that is the extent of online multiplayer.
There’s also a feature similar to the Mystery Dungeon games where if you black out, people online can find your satchel where it was dropped in return for some points to spend at a shop in Jubilife Village.
@Screen Knocking down the score to a 7/10 purely because the game lacks online multiplayer when it was always marketed as a single-player experience seems kinda silly to me.
@Preposterous
In spin-off Pokemon games sure, strategy and difficulty is present. Especially in the Mystery Dungeon games.
But Arceus Legends is a mainline game, not a spin-off. And difficulty in the main series has been lacking in a lot of places. So I’m glad Arceus Legends has actually provided some sense of challenge.
@BloodNinja
Horde Battles in XY had you fight 5 Pokemon at once and you were only allowed to use One Pokemon against them all. That was 10 years ago of course.
The battles in Arceus Legends play out differently and the varying situations you find yourself in require you to actually strategise and plan out what you’ll do. There are some seriously difficult battles if you’re not careful. Simply mashing the A button to get through some battle will cost you.
@Preposterous
I wouldn’t say cumbersome, just that battles require an extra layer of strategy than before.
As for the battle styles, Gen 5 introduced Triple and Rotational Battle styles but they were removed later. GameFreak loves introducing cool features and then removing them for worser versions or just not at all.
The reviewer PURPOSEFULLY attracted the attention or aggravated a number of Pokemon and they turned the situation around on her by making the battle a 1v4. That outcome happened purely based on the decisions she made.
People complain all the time that Pokemon is a kids game and that it’s so easy. Now reviewers are complaining a Pokemon game is too difficult and you label it as a “valid complaint”.
@Screen
This article sadly doesn’t even touch upon the sheer number of QoL features present in Legends Arceus in regards to the UI and interface as well as many of the established mechanics we know about Pokemon.
The seamlessness between traversing the field and catching Pokemon is supported by streamlined menus that pop-up and don’t feel clunky and in your face at all.
Pokemon no longer automatically evolve and instead you now have the option to manually choose when you want to evolve them (A but like in the Mystery Dungeon games). Once you hit the level requirement or evolution method you can select to evolve them from the Party screen.
EV’s and IV’s have been replaced with a simpler mechanic which will appeal to more casual players.
And that’s just two of the few impressive QoL features that impresses me in this game.
@Saf01
It amazes me too. So many people got filtered by Ultra Necrozma in USUM and it was a legitimate challenge (Especially if you were doing a Nuzlocke)
Arceus Legends has numerous difficult fights just by dangerously exploring places. And there’s even one fight which I won’t spoil, but it’s probably on par with Ultra Necrozma, if not harder.
@NinjaGuy69 It’s all well and good you writing a wall of text talking about justifying your thought process, but you stated Legends Arceus was “bland and soulless” just like all the other Pokemon games.
If you’ve overseen and played through that many games and still came out not liking them for whatever reason, then maybe that says something about this series not being for you.
The reviewer for IGN Italy got so angry that they gave the game 5/10 because she said it was too difficult LOL
Here’s a translated portion of that review;
“First of all, in the game world it is possible to be attacked by several Pokémon together up to a maximum of four: no problem, it comes to mind, at least two I can use them in turn, right? But no, regardless of the amount of Pokémon in our possession, even if there were six, we will be able to field only one . Imagine a system like that of the CTB, "corrupted" by the two techniques mentioned above, in a 4vs1 fight; of course, nothing prevents us from escaping when it comes to wild encounters, and escape has always been possible for me. However, it is not an ideal or acceptable solution to apply every time.”
They literally angered four Pokemon in the field and then complained when the battle became stacked..
@NinjaGuy69 Ah…there’s that word again that people like to pass around so much in the Pokemon fandom. “Apologists”.
You come across like a typical 4chan poster on the Pokemon board who has nothing better to do but whine and complain.
If, in your own words you thought it was “bland and soulless” then it means the game wasn’t for you and wasn’t what you set your expectations up to be. Which is what I said.
@Screen
“Correct they only used pictures to tell us, and not words.”
We literally got an in-game screenshot of the Pokedex posted to the official Legends Arceus website showing that the game was separated in to multiple wild-area like zones.
Absolutely no false advertisement was done at all.
@DomGC “The gameplay is incredibly bland and repetitive as can get“
It’s literally no different to most Pokemon games, except the focus is on triple battles from Gen 5 with a few mechanics throw in here and there.
Gacha elements aside, the battles genuinely have you work up a strategy for the harder content that has been steadily releasing over the past year or two.
It’s not a reboot full-stop. Journey’s has the most continuity and callbacks out of any series of the anime period.
The only series that attempted to be a reboot in the beginning was the BW series due to directorial changes and they ended up abandoning that later into the series. (Still the worst one by far though.)
The day one-patch is literally a good chunk of the game (3GB) that for some reason they couldn’t put on the base cartridge. It’s not a lack of space, because the full game (Patch included) would fit on an 8GB cartridge.
Either they were pushed for time (No idea how) are they are poorly optimised when it comes to developing games.
@arenred I wouldn’t say she was disappointed that the update was split, but more-so that things just became bigger than they expected. Ideas just grew and they wanted to add more things.
The absolute gold standard of mainline Pokemon games.
Took the original instalments and refined them, polished them further and provided players new and old with content truly befitting of the title I gave above.
@KateGray I think it may be that they were initially part of Part II because of the Warden and the Deep Dark. But between the update being split into two parts and the aforementioned features being postponed to the Wild Update, then Candles were likely brought forward earlier.

Think of the anime as just another route.

Re: Junichi Masuda Leaves Game Freak For New Role At The Pokémon Company
I’m thankful for all his work on the series and I’m wishing him all the best in his new position.
That said, I can’t even begin to describe how happy I am he’ll no longer be directing the games. Half the problem is gone, now for the rest of it.

Is the game good? To me, yes.
Is the game fun? Looks fun to me.
Is that all that matters? Yep.
Does the ratings and reviews really matter? Not really.

Competitive Pokemon has less worth than shiny Pokemon these days and that’s saying something.
As soon as a meta is found the top ranked players all fall in line and copy and paste the strategy with minimal tweaks. So boring to watch.
