Re: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Gets A Tasty Limited Time Discount (UK)

Wexter

@FishyS that's fair. I don't tend to buy Sega collections so for me it's a solid value. For those who got them elsewhere they won't see the value proposition the same. I do think the Mario Kart 8 DLC is pretty nuts to include as I think that is pretty great value for a family who play Mario Kart together to save some dollars for online kart racing.

As for the GBA games... Yeah it's a bit sparse right now, but once Metroid Zero Mission, FE Sacred Stones, the Golden Sun duology and possibly 3rd party games like Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and Sonic Advanced arrive... It's going to get a lot harder to resist... And would be an instant purchase for Pokemon diehards once Pokemon Fire Red, Leaf Green and Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald arrive... Damn that will be a must have for a bulk of Switch owners.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Gets A Tasty Limited Time Discount (UK)

Wexter

@robchacot full price? Pikmin 1+2 is $60, but on their own they're $30, and one of the best remasters ever made is like $50 for the Prime remaster. I get GCN games are old, but $30 for them is pretty reasonable without the Prime remaster treatment. I'm sure Nintendo will keep them coming if Pikmin does well and considering to get some of these games on original hardware is can go anywhere for $40-170 I think Nintendo is offering here a pretty good value.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Gets A Tasty Limited Time Discount (UK)

Wexter

@JohnnyMind I agree. It was always a pretty good deal when it was just N64 and Genesis/Mega Drive games. But, with Mario Kart 8 DLC (amazing value on its own as you basically get Mario Kart 8.5), and now some bangers of GBA games... The future is pretty great for this service. I'm still holding out that Microsoft and Nintendo can bring Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark and Conker to the service... But as of right now, you get an amazing deal if you have even a passing interest in the deal.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Gets A Tasty Limited Time Discount (UK)

Wexter

@FishyS I have been quite enjoying it. I think it's a pretty great deal now that you get GBA and DLC for select titles. It feels like Nintendo dipping their toe in the Gamepass model, and it's a pretty great value. That and with more Nintendo GBA and N64 games on the way... It's a banger of a deal.

Though I do think Nintendo needs to make their online offerings more expansive to entice more buyers, but what they have right now is pretty great.

Re: Microsoft Given All-Clear In The US To Acquire Activision Blizzard

Wexter

@Switch_Pro indeed! I think you hit the nail on the head there. Activision has a fair amount of talented studios who are probably looking forward to working under MS. I'm excited to see what MS does with the studios more than the IPs. Too much focus has been on COD when let's be real MS won't make that exclusive if they want to make their money back.

Re: Microsoft Given All-Clear In The US To Acquire Activision Blizzard

Wexter

@Switch_Pro which was the general point. The only big part of this purchase that could benefit Microsoft with its consoles (outside of COD, but that's not going exclusive) would be Blizzard. Though StarCraft and WarCraft would be hard to put on Series X without mouse and keyboard support. Halo Wars proved traditional RTS games are hard to pull off and even then are extremely niche on consoles (note RTS not SRGS). Though it be neat if they gave id Soft, Hexen, but I doubt just Activision's IPs will move the needle considering how dead and buried a lot of them are.

Re: Microsoft Given All-Clear In The US To Acquire Activision Blizzard

Wexter

@Ridlay It's really not. Activision Blizzard has a handful of major IPs, Call of Duty, Diablo (historically a PC first franchise), World of WarCraft (which is in the decline and not on consoles anyway) and Overwatch... but for the most part some of their biggest IPs are dormant or dead. Tony Hawk? Dead. Guitar Hero? Dead. Skylanders? Dead. StarCraft? Dormant. Then they have smaller IPs like Crash and Spyro, which are not really system sellers. Their mobile offerings are massive, but won't turn the tide on the console side.

Their big IPs are massive, but they don't have as many as you'd think they do. It is why the FTC had to focus on Call of Duty because that is massive, but everything else can be PC and Xbox exclusive without harming Sony's lead. If this were EA... then Sony would have a problem because of the EA Sports label, Mass Effect (the hype around Mass Effect 4 is huge), Dragon Age, Dead Space, Battlefield, The Sims, Need for Speed. These are all massive franchises that are active. I'd say while none on their own are larger than COD, they'd be painful to lose, especially FIFA and Madden. I'd say even Ubisoft with their big three of FarCry, Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs are probably more collectively painful to lose if they went Xbox exclusive than a good chunk of Activision IPs.

COD would never leave PlayStation provided PlayStation is still the market leader. The fact that COD is not on Switch (at least Warzone and the classics) is a headscratcher. Activision Blizzard outside of COD is not the juggernaut they were a couple generations ago. Microsoft is spending $69billion for COD, Blizzard and mobile IPs. Because I doubt they plan to revive Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk. I highly doubt this would lead to a monopoly for Microsoft. Unless they bought EA or Ubisoft... but then that would be far easier to block.

Re: Call Of Duty On Switch Still Isn't Guaranteed As FTC Appeals Court Ruling

Wexter

@Debo626 @Pigeon as I said it's not that Sony currently is on par with Nintendo's catalog of 1st party games, it's that they could if they wanted to. And even Nintendo tends to only drop 1 core title per-generation of their top IP (1 3D Mario, 1 3D Zelda, 1 Mario Kart and Smash) and their smaller IPs fill the gaps with multiple titles like Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kirby. The only outlier is Pokemon and we can argue how beneficial that will be long-term. If Sony wanted they could push Medievil, Ratchet and Clank, Ape Escape or even Sly Cooper to fill the gaps between God of War or Last of Us titles. Sony has some great IPs, but they don't really push them like Nintendo. So, in yeah Sony has built a pretty great IP catalog, just does not seem to make as good of use of it as they could.

Re: Call Of Duty On Switch Is Back On After Microsoft Wins FTC Court Case

Wexter

@Debo626 I dunno man, God of War (2018) sold 23 million units, Last of US sold 19 million, even Horizon Zero Dawn sold 20 million units. It is not that Sony does not have huge names in gaming, they just don't leverage them as well as Nintendo. Nintendo is great at pushing older games, ideas and characters to the gamers, Sony seems less able to do this. It is hard to compare to Mario and Pokemon, but Sony does have some extremely recognizable IPs. Like where is Sony's version of Mario Kart? When they made their own Smash game they focused too hard on 3rd parties instead of including Sony favorites like Dart from Legend of Dragoon. They just seem too enamored with investing in 3rd party exclusives, than investing in their own back-catalog. Unlike Nintendo who leverages everything they have because they live or die by their 1st party titles.

Re: Call Of Duty On Switch Is Back On After Microsoft Wins FTC Court Case

Wexter

@Pigeon I dunno Sony does have a number of heavy hitters and nostalgic stalwarts. Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Gran Turismo, Killzone, Resistance, Legend of Dragoon, Horizon, Last of Us, Medevil, Infamous, and Uncharted (along with licensed IPs like MLB the Show and Insomniac's Spider-Man) Sony has even more IPs too, but those are just some notables. If Sony wanted too, they could be just as prolific as Nintendo when it comes to first party IPs... They just don't leverage them as well.

Re: Monolith Soft Profits Almost Doubled In Fiscal Year Ending March 2023

Wexter

@SpoonySpoons @Agent069 Gamefreak is an external developer. Despite working almost entirely exclusively for Nintendo they don't get access to the same benefits an internal studio gets. Monolith doesn't just get lent out, they spend years supporting Nintendo's internal teams and work on Xenoblade and other projects. Pokemon would probably benefit with Monolith's know-how, but that doesn't mean they get that perk because at the end of the day they are 3rd party. It is up to Gamefreak who they want to work with and it needs to approved by the Pokemon Company, Nintendo and if it involves them Monolith too. Monolith is a small studio so they don't just have the resources to work on every Nintendo IP along with their own projects.

Re: Japan's Switch Sales In June Were Reportedly A Record High For The Console

Wexter

These are insane sales, truly unprecedented territory for Nintendo even during the NES and Wii-eras. However, Nintendo seems keen on pushing their brand into the realm of Disney. They see past Microsoft and Sony as competitors, they see Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, large multimedia franchises as direct competition for consumer eyeballs. This tactic seems to be paying off quite well and I expect a next gen console sooner than people think to keep pushing their strategy of keeping eyes on them. Why else would they be investing in film, manga and theme parks?

Re: Japanese Charts: Final Fantasy XVI Dethrones Zelda: TOTK After Six Weeks On Top

Wexter

@Arawn93 I wonder what's up with Sony in Japan. The Switch is a monster over there, but Playstation historically has always excelled in Japan even during the early years of the PS3. Is it a demographic issue? But, the fact the Switch in total sales (OLED, base and lite) keep outselling it is a bit of a concern... One would expect at this point the Switch family to not be outselling the PS5 with a major exclusive title...

Re: Japanese Charts: Final Fantasy XVI Dethrones Zelda: TOTK After Six Weeks On Top

Wexter

To be expected. Final Fantasy is an international institution at this point (not Dragon Quest levels in Japan, but extremely popular) and considering this one is radically different from previous entries and by all accounts top quality sales are to be expected. However, compared to the sales of Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake these numbers are a bit concerning... Limiting release on the PS5 appears to have hurt initial sales and I wonder if it's legs will make up the difference. The real factor on if the franchise is on shaky ground in Japan is if Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sells more than XVI.

Re: Activision CEO Made 'A Bad Judgement' In Not Supporting The Nintendo Switch More

Wexter

@PessitheMystic to be fair the only people who bought a Wii U were Nintendo hardcore loyalists or those who were fans of then niche franchises like Xenoblade, Bayonetta, Fatal Frame or the odd Atlus game. The Wii U is a very poor indicator of franchise sales as we've learned with the Switch. I love the Wii U, great system with a great library, but not a system to draw those who wanted to play COD outside of the few itching for an FPS who already owned one.

As for why put COD on it in the first place... Well after the Wii do you bet against Nintendo? COD sold pretty damn well on Wii too, so it at the time seemed like a no brainier. After the Wii U, Activision probably wanted some sort of guarantee the Switch was just not a Wii U 2 and well... They were wrong and should had supported it better.

Re: Random: Mortal Kombat Co-Creator Knows Who He'd Add To Smash Bros., If Nintendo Was To Ask

Wexter

I'd be okay with a Mortal Kombat representative in the next Smash. Mortal Kombat has been on Nintendo systems since the OG series (MK1-MK Armageddon) and Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 are on Switch. The only games Nintendo fans missed out on were MK9 and MKX. Injustice proved MK characters don't need to be super gorey as cameo fighters and Scorpion would make perfect sense as a smash fighter. Fire balls/fire breath, teleportation, his sword for smash attacks and his grapple would be sick with his chain grab. Honestly this is a perfect fit for Smash and MK (it's also not like Nintendo has not invited M rated characters before like Bayonetta so please no "think of the children" memes if this does happen).

Re: Pikmin 4 Will Let You Erase Your Mistakes With A Handy New Rewind Mechanic

Wexter

@RupeeClock Yes and no. Let's use Fire Emblem as the example. In a "casual mode" run of the game either Conquest or Three Houses there are still consequences of those characters fainting even without "classic" permadeath. If that unit dies in the map they don't get bonus experience for clearing the map, increase in skill points, plus that is unable to defeat enemies limiting their ability to level-up at the same pace as other units. In 3H even though you can "level grind" on off-days you are limited by how much you can use that feature during that day, or spending crucial action points to invest in Byleth to recruit better units from other houses than the one you now need to extra invest in. There are consequences for the character still fainting due to bad play. In Conquest with the limited amount of chapters and no avenue to level grind this is even more punishing as now you must either bench that unit in hopes that the others can carry the team and miss out in a unit that grows into an S-tier unit (in FE historically weak early game units tend to be some of the best in the game compared to higher level units you get early on due to the extra stat-growths they can get), or now put extra care into them leveling up in the next map and possibly knee-cap other units you are investing in and just messing up the party.

So, yes if the game is properly balanced around these features these extra features don't actively harm the experience that much. In 3H even though you can turn back a few turns you are limited to how many you can do that a map, and in some cases you may have screwed yourself outside of it's ability to help you. It is more convenient to use that tool, but in some cases it is about worthless anyways so it doesn't matter if you use it or just reset to an earlier save.

I think it entirely depends on how Pikmin uses this feature and how much it impacts that game. I like the Fire Emblem example as despite how casual mode and the ability to go back a few turns is lambasted by 'hardcore' fans it is not as game breaking as they think it is, but in less balanced games like Awakening and Birthright they do punish you far less outside of time commitment. If Pikmin makes the feature an expendable resource which is in limited amounts (Pikmin loves doing this in general) then I don't think the feature will be abused (even if it is limited to 1-3 times a day depending on how far you are in said game).

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands On" Impressions Of Pikmin 4

Wexter

@FishyS I think in the original Pikmin you have to almost try to get the bad ending even if you're bad at the game. Getting the minimum of 25 ship parts is really do-able as you can easily get more than one part a day. It does suck to die a fair bit in these games, but the skill cap is pretty low for an RTS, and provided you're paying attention and multi-tasking well even a bad day is pretty easy to bounce back from. But, I grew up with StarCraft and WarCraft 2 on the family PC in the late 90s, so when I got Pikmin for the Gamecube, I probably already had the basic skills to get through it without much issue... if you're starting form square one it can be very daunting.

Though I do agree that lessoning the time restriction will help new fans get into the series much like how casual mode in Fire Emblem allowed new fans to jump in without the fear of permadeath. Even if the series previously had built in tools to circumvent the challenge of losing a party member (the arena for level grinding, the lack of auto-saves, easy mode allowing for saving your progress on a map at anytime)... it is just the fear and added stress of those kinds of mechanics is not for everyone and Fire Emblem has learned from that. Though I do hope Pikmin 4 does not completely get rid of the time mechanic or completely simplify that for series veterans wanting a bigger challenge.

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands On" Impressions Of Pikmin 4

Wexter

@PosterBoy I always considered it the same issue people had with Majora's Mask. People don't tend to like time limits as it adds extra stress and some just don't tend to enjoy that extra layer of pressure... no matter how lenient the time limit is. I mean for example in Majora's Mask you could easily finish a dungeon within the time limit and with the Song of Inverted time it is a breeze to get through the dungeon and the area leading up to it if you know what you're doing.

time limits are just not a super popular mechanic in general I guess, for example until Persona 5 that series had a bad wrap with people not liking the time limit to get through the dungeon and maintain social links. It was part of the reason the series was considered niche for so long (even by JRPG standards). Maybe Pikmin 4 will get more people into the series with it loosening the time restrictions.

Re: Xbox Boss Says Call Of Duty Would Run "Relatively Great Compared To Other Switch Games"

Wexter

@HotGoomba I want the deal to go through not because I'm pro-Microsoft or anti-Sony (even if Sony is not winning me over during this process). I'm pro the employees at Activision Blizzard. Say what you will about Microsoft's past, but the way those devs have been treated by Activision Blizzard will have it far better under new management and Microsoft has been very clear they will be making things better for them and find the harassment by higher ups at Activision Blizzard unacceptable.

Re: Nintendo Infographic Showcases The Games Featured In June's Direct

Wexter

@Wheatly it seems like the same cycle from Gen 8. Main game -> DLC -> Remake/Spin-off -> next gen game. Since the DlC is replacing the "3rd game" odds are the next generation would be rather early in the next consoles lifespan. Or we could end up with a remake (like the Let's Go games were a remake of Yellow version). I'd personally think timing Gen X with the holiday of year 1 or 2 of the next console would massively boost sales. It all depends on when this new console launches.

Re: The FTC Doesn't Seem To Think Switch Is A Serious PlayStation & Xbox Competitor

Wexter

@BaldBelper78 the entire saga has really put egg on the Sony camp the worst (Nintendo and Steam looking the best). With all the leaked emails from the Sony side about "not caring about the deal" and "knowing Microsoft won't pull COD from Playstation even without a 10 year deal" and even "withholding information about the PS6 from Activision" it all comes across as petty and trying to keep Microsoft from getting a new toy. Which is fair I guess, but it really does not make them look good or even say positive things about their business model when to the public they're playing the "Microsoft would cripple Playstation sales if they pulled COD and purposefully make the Playstation version worse" card... Play me a song on the world's smallest violin Sony when Nintendo has done the best they've probably ever done with a system that has not a single COD title on it and their worst selling home console had two COD titles out of the gate (Black Ops II and Ghost)... Having or not having COD is not a solid indicator for how a console will do at all.

Re: The FTC Doesn't Seem To Think Switch Is A Serious PlayStation & Xbox Competitor

Wexter

@Ralizah I don't like the argument because it breaks down gaming too much. I tongue in cheek claimed Nintendo has a monopoly on modular home-to-handheld gaming then if Sony and Microsoft are high powered consoles. The term sounds ridiculous, but so is the term the FTC coined. Because if it's just about raw power then what about the fact all three compete for the same third party titles, create exclusives to entice console ownership and all three charge in similar price ranges ($250-500). That and with how mobile chips and architecture are closing the gap quickly with dedicated console quality GPUs and CPUs how long before the Switch-style console can just play the same games at generally the same quality. Despite it's niche market the Steam Deck is proving that games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Elden Ring and Final Fantasy VII Remake play pretty good on it with minimal sacrifice to graphical fidelity and with very minimal optimization. The next Switch won't have nearly the power gap to the PS5 and XSX then some might think it will.

It's a really narrow scope and a term that will age like warm milk within the decade, not in a decade within this decade. It just feels out of touch.

Re: Review: Pikmin 2 - Still A Sublime Time, Even Without The 7-Up Bottle Cap

Wexter

@MythTgr I get the principle, but Nintendo has always been one to capitalize and repackage remasters. There were like what 7 "New Play Control" games on Wii, the amount of anniversary or trilogy collections on the Wii as well. The Wii U even had a few GameCube remasters the most notable being Windwaker and Twilight Princess and even rereleased Xenoblade on the Wii U eShop... And that is before we talk about Xenoblade remaster on Switch and the New 3DS port. That and the 3DS N64 remasters...

My point is Nintendo will Nintendo even when Nintendo is not saying they're Nintendoing. I think Prime 2 & 3 might get remastered, but the Prime remaster felt more like a proof of concept for the dev team like Windwaker was for the Breath of the Wild team.

Re: Rumour: Metal Gear Solid 4, 5, and Peace Walker May Be Included In Vol. 2 Collection

Wexter

I think MGS4 would be quite doable on Switch rather easily (by all accounts in recent interviews they stated they had the game running on Xbox 360). But, MGS4 is an investment of a game to say the least... you need to be familiar with at LEAST MGS1-3 before playing and that is before we talk about Portable Ops, or the original Metal Gear games. As for MGSV... I'm meh on it. I think it do well on Switch with its more mission selection styled structure than the linear storytelling of the previous games. It is basically large scale Peace Walker.

Re: Pikmin 1 & 2 Drop On Switch eShop Today, With A Physical Bundle On The Way

Wexter

@SalvorHardin it's a niche, but very loved franchise. That and it's Miyamoto's pet project and I don't mind Nintendo having that one quirky of odd IP that gets love consistently. That and Pikmin seems to be a franchise constantly pushing the needle and fits the RTS slot in Nintendo's rotating lineup.

While I'd like some F-Zero I dunno if Nintendo sees it as fitting in their long-term lineup. And they seem like they've been interested in a reboot, but never found the develop willing to take it on.

Re: Mortal Kombat 1's Switch Port Developers Have Been Revealed

Wexter

@Cashews So if the Switch 2 comes out and outsells PS5 will that then shift the goalpost of it being a next gen console and no counting? All of that aside the Switch has done beyond what anyone has expected and deserves all the praise it gets for basically revitalizing the Nintendo brand after the downswing since the Wii and DS.

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Developer Retro Studios Is Hiring New Talent

Wexter

Honestly, the amount of people bemoaning Prime 4 taking so long tend to forget that development was completely rebooted from the game (probably in Alpha form by a rumored internal Bandai Namco team) announced in 2017. Considering the game has only been in real development for 4 years it's probably in beta at Retro. I don't think we're that far away from some sort of announcement. And Nintendo plus Retro did recently shadow drop the Prime 1 remaster (to critical and commercial acclaim) so, it's not like Retro has not been doing other things outside of Prime 4.

Was the game announced too soon? Yeah, probably. But, considering Tears of the Kingdom was announced in 2019 and released this year to critical acclaim... I think Prime 4 getting a 2024 release date it not unrealistic to hope for.

Re: UK Charts: Not Even Street Fighter 6 Can Knock Zelda: TOTK Off Its Throne

Wexter

@Simon97 That still does not make them niche though. I mean Dark Souls is hard, but Soulsborne games are super popular. I just think it is because of how the community presents itself more than anything. As far as sales are concerned Fighters tend to do pretty well and the top hitters can go pound-for-pound of most other genre heavies.

Re: UK Charts: Not Even Street Fighter 6 Can Knock Zelda: TOTK Off Its Throne

Wexter

@SmashFan347 Where is the idea that fighting games are niche from? Mortal Kombat 11 sold 15 million units that is not niche. And that is before we discuss titles like Dragonball FighterZ at 10 million units, and Street Fighter IV sold 9 million units, and Street Fighter V sold 7 million units. Tekken 7 sold 10 million units, Dead or Alive 6 has sold over 2 million copies and was considered a commercial flop that is more than the first two Xenoblade games sold.

For comparison Splatoon 2 sold 13.3 million units, Mortal Kombat 11 out sold that. Street Fighter V's sales numbers are comparable to Monster Hunter Rise on Switch. These are not niche little titles. When compared to games like Devil May Cry V which has sold 6 million units, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has sold roughly 9 million units, Witcher 3 (on PS4) sold 13 million units. Like I mean these are not Animal Crossing number or Call of Duty numbers, but those are the anomalies. And that is before we talk about Smash sales numbers which is a fighting game...

Where is this idea that fighting games is a niche genre coming from?
