Re: Fire Emblem Engage Anime-Like Opening Cinematic Surfaces Online

Wexter

@LUIGITORNADO because the art designers style tends to lean into similar looking faces. It happens sometimes. That does not mean all anime styled artists have similar looking faces.

Based on previous comments I'm not sure anything I can say will convince you otherwise. This is also not unique to Japanese artists as Western artists can have similar issues.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Dev Monolith Soft Provides Employee Headcount Update

Wexter

@Tober Xenoblade despite being beautiful is also designed around reusing assets from previous games which helps keep costs down. And 2-3 million units is nothing to sneeze at. But, Monolith supporting other studios seems to be more because they are a very specialized and talented group. Nintendo supports Xenoblade fully as a cornerstone of their company I think a) to keep Monolith happy. B) because they don't get massive AAA JRPGs on launch so it fills that gap in their portfolio. C) because they are not very expensive to make compared to other AAA JRPG franchises so a 2-3 million sales rate makes them money.

Re: Hands On: Fire Emblem Engage Is Surprisingly Fast-Paced And Delightfully Deep

Wexter

@Browny I'm going to be a cranky old person too. The series has always been very anime from the very first entry. And I think the anime waifu influence was at its worse in FE Fates and has been toned down for both Echoes and Three Houses. You still have those elements, but they are mostly ignorable outside of the fact that your "waifu" or "husbando" marries your character at the end of the game. Which generally has always been a part of the franchise as S-Rank supports always had a implied romantic or life partner element. Fire Emblem has always appealed to those who like anime because it is VERY anime. Each game always ended with fighting a god or a Eldredge horror which is very JRPG standard stuff. The only exception to this was Path of Radiance, but even it had heavy anime overtones and shounen inspired story telling tropes like the Leguz, the Black Knight and Ike himself.

The sales potential to FE has been kneecapped by Nintendo a) not marketing the game except to hardcore Nintendo fans. b) releasing the games on consoles that either sold poorly (i.e Gamecube) or had very limited print runs and poorly marketed on successful consoles (i.e. Wii & DS). Awakening saved the franchise and this is confirmed fact by both Nintendo and Intelligent Systems. It was not due to it being more "anime" it was because the game was very well made with excellent game mechanics curbed from some of the best entries in the series (such as Genealogy of the Holy War & Path or Radiance) and FINALLY marketing the series to a rapid fanbase.

Did Fates go off the rails with Waifus and anime influence? OOOH YES! But, that has been massively scaled back in recent years and did not stop the release of a rather back-to-basics entry with Echoes. The "new" fans are not the problem, rather it is Nintendo's marketing the game as very anime fan friendly (which it is) and those fans enjoying the games. I will admit that FE Heroes the mobile game preys on anime fans, but that is a gotcha game meant for hardcore fans who are willing to spend $100s for a jpeg of Camilla in a bunny outfit. But, I'd argue since Fates, there has been very minimal lewdly dressed characters in an FE game and the series has scaled back on the more fan service elements.

And before someone mentions Three Houses took place in a school... well not really. It is a military academy and those have existed since the eighteen hundreds officially and unofficially since ancient Greece. So, of course the series can be set in one without being solely an anime thing.

Re: Hands On: Fire Emblem Engage Is Surprisingly Fast-Paced And Delightfully Deep

Wexter

@bozz as someone whose been playing since the GBA... A lot of this "anime" influence and romances have always been a part of the series. You could even decide who Roy's mom was based on supports with Eliwood. In the GameCube and Wii games (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn) we had literal cat people and you can recruit characters based purely on interpersonal relationships. And go read some old forums "best girl" arguments and anime waifus have always been a part of the fanbase if you like it or not... Oh well shrug.

This stuff has always been part of the franchise. Yes I get the tea minigames in 3 Houses was kinda a slog, but it could be easily ignored. And the supports were still very well written with engaging characters and very solid SRPG mechanics. If people no longer like the franchise that's fine... But the series has always been very anime influenced.

Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

Wexter

@Mgalens that I'm more fine with. Nintendo is very odd... Despite doing a good chunk of the leg work with the retro revival with the Wii and Virtual Console they are probably one of the most inconsistent companies in making their back catalogues available for purchase. I love NSO in principle, but the execution can sometimes leave me wanting.

But, as far as preserving the meat and potatoes of this industry they're probably one of the companies to be the least mad at. Then again I dislike how DYKG went about this. Not every copyright dispute needs to be flamed online and they come off as very arrogant here. But, now I'm just getting into personal waxing and that is less productive.

Re: Rumour: Leaked Images Of A Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Switch OLED Model Appear Online

Wexter

@Wolfleaf I think a Switch 2 is around the corner (At least announced in 2023 and released in 2024), but it would not make sense to delay TotK unlike BotW. As BotW helped propel early Switch sales as the Wii U was dead in the water. The Switch is still a monster on the sales charts and will be probably be the 2nd best selling home console of all time by the time TotK comes out. That would allow TotK to push Switch sales even further and reap the maximum sales totals of a console at peak attachment.

The Switch 2 will probably launch with a similar heavy hitter (I'm thinking Prime 4 at this point), but it does not really need TotK unlike how the Switch needed BotW.

Re: Capcom Wants To "Hear From You" In Its 2022 End Of Year Survey

Wexter

@wuntyme8 I think some of those will be in the next Arcade Stadium Collection (at least Power Stone and Rival Schools). Some of those games though have some serious rights issues around them like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, but I do think a Mega Man Legends collection will probably happen (its the last spin-off series of the Blue Bomber to not get a collection. That and it would be neat if they included both versions of Legends 1, Mega Man Legends PSOne and Mega Man 64 as selectable options)

Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

Wexter

@johnvboy I'm inclined to agree. I'm reminded of an old video where a developer asks a room full of them if they can find their development documents, code or any information about a game they developed a year ago. No one raises their hands. Most developers and publishers are awful at preserving their work...

Yet, Nintendo is apparently deliberately destroying game history when we know that is not the case. Based on leaks we know Nintendo has development documents, source code and more for games as far back as their 80s arcade games. During the advertising campaign for Super Mario Maker they even pulled out Miyamoto's original level design documents for the first Super Mario Bros (even to his own shock). Compare this to Square Enix where we know they lost the hi quality renders for their PSOne RPGs and the source code for the original Kingdom Hearts (a PS2 game). Or Konami which didn't have the finished builds of Silent Hill 2/3 and had to get the HD Development team a historic build and forced them to fix bugs the original Team Silent already fixed for the original versions over again for the HD port.

Fact of the matter Nintendo taking down 1 video does not equal them destroying game preservation when we know they're one of the best publishers at archiving their legacy content and development information. They don't share it freely (for obvious reasons), but, they do preserve it.

Re: Rumour: Switch Pro Was Real But Got Cancelled, Claims Digital Foundry

Wexter

@electrolite77 I would argue Nintendo would be smart to iterate this time round and not reinvent the wheel. The Switch is still doing gangbusters and a more powerful Switch with better online, better storage, more features (maybe VR support) would probably go down really well with an audience that shells out for new versions of iPads and Android phones along with gamers who still gladly buys PS5s even though it is just a more powerful PS4.

Doing something extremely radical without clear marketing (i.e. launch 3DS and the Wii U) would be a very bad idea. Nintendo needs to be clear what the next Switch is and why audiences should upgrade. If they can do that another 100 million seller should be possible.

Re: Best Of 2022: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Wexter

@electrolite77 Thank you!!! I don't know where this myth came from, but the N64 was a beast of a machine out of the box capable of things the PSOne and Saturn could only achieve with exceptional programming know how (Soul Reaver being a prime example). But in comparison to the lush open environments of Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, the cramp halls of PSOne games really show the limitations of that hardware. That and PSOne character models are really low poly for the time and had a very bizarre flicker. In comparison most N64 games had far better character models and environment design.

The N64 for all intents and purposes really pushed polygon gaming in ways the PSOne and Saturn could not even imagine. It was only limited by the amount of space developers could unitize compared to the CD based competition.

Re: Best Of 2022: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Wexter

@BrianJL I think the logic was that there was enough overlap (2 years) in the US and EU for it to be counted together. Considering the overlap between NES and SNES it makes enough sense. But, in total I think the GB should be with the SNES more than the Virtual Boy. Even then including only the GBC with the N64 is a bit misleading too as the killer app of the GBC were Gameboy games (Pokemon Red, Blue,Yellow, Silver and Gold versions as Crystal was the only GBC exclusive) and the amount of GBC only games (as in not enhanced Gameboy games like Links Awakening DX) is about 450 and a lot of those came out when the Gamecube was released between 2001-2002.

Considering how long the Gameboy was supported by Nintendo for 13 full years and overlapped the NES, SNES and N64 (and a bit with the Gamecube as the last original GB game was released in 2002) it really should had been included in all of those generations with a firm cut off with the GBA. As most of the games we associate as N64 era GBC games were actually just original Gameboy games enhanced for the GBC.

But, not my list and I think I'm getting really technical. But, that just proves how there is no real clean cut-off of generations if we include home consoles with handhelds.

Re: Best Of 2022: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Wexter

I personally think this is an argument down to pure subjectivity on what you want out of a system. I don't think there is an objectively "best" Nintendo system. They all had ups and downs and it depends on subjective ideas like what you grew up with, what was the first console you bought yourself, how much investment you made, are you 3rd party first or 1st party first, do you like mature games or family friendly, innovation or iteration.

For example the N64 had a ton of mature games like Resident Evil 2, Quake 2, Doom 64, Conker, Perfect Dark. But, if you prefer family friendly games then the Wii is king with Zak and Wiki, Rayman Origins, World of Goo. You get the idea. Because this is very subjective and there are exceptions to this rule.

As far as best overall hardware it's the Switch. And due to a lot of the best games from all consoles (including Xbox and PlayStation) in some way or another if be through completions, NSO or individual re-release (FFVII, KOTOR, Skyrim etc.) on the Switch it's hard to not say the Switch is objectively the best console atm.

But, what is the best subjective console I think is more of what this is and that's fine. But, that is basically apples to oranges. For every SNES Chad there is a Switch King, and for N64 purists there is a Wii apologist (which I am of all those). I think each generation is best in their own ways and I think celebrating Nintendo staying in the game and constantly shaking things up is amazing!!! This would not be really a discussion for Xbox or PlayStation because they don't really innovative and there is not much of a difference between 360, Xbone, and Series X/S and PS3, PS4 and PS5 (though they have clear favorites in there fanbases). I think that is what makes Nintendo special for so many people.

So, yeah.

Re: Best Of 2022: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Wexter

The amount of people sleeping on the N64 is quite baffling. The system gave us Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (those three games alone are in constant discussion of best of all time on any system), Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie, Turok 1-3, Wave Race, 1080, Mario Party 1-3 (the best ones), Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark, the original Smash Bros, Castlevania Legacy of Darkness, Mischief Makers, Ogre Battle 64. I can go on... But, it just seems odd that the Wii U is getting more love here than the system that gave us Bomberman 64 and Snowboard Kids.

I think all Nintendo consoles excelled at something and you can argue one over the other down to pure personal preference. Selecting a number 1 is extremely difficult.

Re: Best Of 2022: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

Wexter

I'd say no. If it is a modern series like Mass Effect or Dragon Age sure!! It makes perfect sense. But if it is anything older than N64/PlayStation Generation I'd say no and even that is stretching it. Some 8-16bit titles have not aged well mechanically and while games like Super Mario age like fine wines, stuff like the original Zelda and Final Fantasy are not indicative of the modern series.

That is my general take is play the entry you want to if that is Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time 3D or even Final Fantasy XV and if you enjoy those go back to the older titles. Games have advanced so much that playing early entries without the quality of life features of modern games will probably annoy modern gamers who did not grow up with them. The only exception to this is Metroid where Super Metroid is close to perfect, but even then playing the original Metroid is a chore.

To:dr no. Play what you want and if you like those go back to the older entries.

Re: Best Of 2022: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

Wexter

Has anyone thought that maybe VC was unprofitable? According to insiders publishers saw very little income from VC titles and Nintendo titles tended to be the most downloaded. The way I see it is Nintendo doing a subscription is that they pay a consistent licensing fee for publishers so they get recurring revenue no matter what.

I'm sure if VC was profitable Nintendo would had continued it. Based on the lack of it... It must had not been.

Re: Undertale Creator Toby Fox Shares His Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Soundtrack Contributions

@Gorlokk reread the comment I'm replaying to. Say what you will about the game, but the music was fire. I think you need to use your ears if you think the music is bad Toby Fox is allowed to be proud of the music he worked on and no one can takeaway the fact he composed on Pokemon. Reminder for people Toby started in the fangame scene so the fact the Pokemon Company of all groups let him work on Pokemon says a lot about his talent. The comment I'm replying to is clearly trying to tear down this accomplishment because they personally did not like the game.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Launches On Switch Spring 2023

Wexter

Not to defend Square Enix, but $12-$25 a game is not totally unreasonable when you remember that they're remastered editions with redrawn pixel art (not cheap) and each game is roughly 28-40 hours to complete. That and when you consider the rubbish Chrono Trigger PC port is $20 and Chrono Cross goes for about the same price ($25). It's not outlandish to assume a proper remaster for modern screens with new pixel art is not unreasonable what they're asking for.

Though I will still wait for a sale personally as I've played Final Fantasy IV and VI wayyyy too many times and the NES originals never did it for me. So, I'll gladly wait to relive them and maybe grab FFV as I've not played that since the Advance version in the mid-00s.

Re: Every Mega Man Game Ranked

Wexter

@Biquet well this is a Nintendo focused site and this list is a Nintendo only list. It's not petty it's just the nature of a fansite. But, I do think you should split the PSOne and PS2 games out from their collections (X4-X8 and MegaMan 8) as it just makes the list feel better then forcing the collections into the list (and there is not much of a difference from the Anniversary Collection/X Collection from their Legacy Collection counterparts except some extra bells and whistles and MegaMan 9-10 and X7-X8.

Love Nintendolife, but sometimes they do make odd editorial decisions.

Re: Every Mega Man Game Ranked

Wexter

@-wc- I'm inclined to agree. When you have things like the MegaMan X Collection and the MegaMan X Legacy Collection it feels redundant as the only difference is X Collection has slightly less lag and some PSOne emulation issues, but the Legacy Collection has lag on the SNES games and X7 and X8...

Their inclusion feels like splitting hairs (or really love the PS2 games... Well just X8. Never met someone who liked X7) and in principal are better than just the X games on their own.

TL;DR yeah the collections ruin these lists for me and just push down other games, complicate and clutter the list. It just makes more sense to split the games from their collections and just mention what collections they're on at the end. Just makes the list feel more complete.

@Dragonite89 was she fired? I thought the issue was that Pokemon USA started to use a different dubbing house and couldn't use her anymore due to contract reasons with 4Kids? I could be wrong, but I thought that was the reason.

Re: Review: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion - Nomura’s Goofiest Writing Returns In A Thrilling Remaster

Wexter

@New-Moonbeam If it makes you feel better they seemed to have removed the mention of Nomura from the title of the article and all what is left is the highly inaccurate and clunky mention of him in the review itself. Still not sure why Nomura is being mentioned, but it seems to have been partially corrected. Hope Mitch can clarify or update the article as mistakes happen or I'm just unaware of Nomura's involvement with the writing. As on a personal level I don't think the mention in the review is really all that necessary and could just be removed in general.

Re: Review: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion - Nomura’s Goofiest Writing Returns In A Thrilling Remaster

Wexter

@KBuckley27 I'm not sure if I agree with that. Getting into Final Fantasy VII is both insanely complicated and insanely simple at the same time. If you want to experience Final Fantasy VII as intended by the original series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, you play the PSOne version of Final Fantasy VII before anything else.

The reason is because events in Crisis Core and Remake spoil and directly contradict events in the original FFVII.

If for whatever reason you don't want to play the original Final Fantasy VII, then you can probably get away with playing Crisis Core before VII Remake (despite the name VII Remake is not a remake, but rather a reimagining of the original).

Enjoy friends.

Re: Review: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion - Nomura’s Goofiest Writing Returns In A Thrilling Remaster

Wexter

For those on the fence most of the senior team that worked on this game also worked on Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy XV. This was more Hajime Tabata's baby than Nomura's. So if you like Type-0 and XV you'll probably enjoy Crisis Core. Especially if you liked the FFVII Remake.

Also clarification on the review the game was not written by Nomura rather by Kazushige Nojima (Bahamut Lagoon and Final Fantasy XIII) and Sachie Hirano (The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XIII). So, a little weird to mention Nomura in your review rather than those two.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass, Wave 1 DLC Launches 20th January 2023

Wexter

I'll probably get it down the road. As others have pointed out other Nintendo games have had Day 1 DLC and still been "complete" experiences. So until I play a Nintendo game which feels like something substantial is missing (I'm looking at you Final Fantasy XV) to be sold to me later I'll still gladly play the games and get the DLC when I have a better idea what it is. Announcing DLC before launch is just publishers telling consumers they're not abandoning the game after launch. It's a common practice now.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2022 Is Elden Ring

Wexter

@tabris95 as someone who took a shine to Fromsoft games with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 and went back to Dark Souls 1 and Scholar of the First Sin... I just never clicked with Elden Ring. It just felt like openworld Dark Souls warts and all. Which is fine, but after playing the amazingly creepy and Lovecraftian halls of Yharnam... Elden Ring actually felt like a step backwards. The repeating bosses were highly annoying, the level design felt empty at times, the repeating mini-dungeons were a chore and the game's pacing never felt good.

I like the game, but it seemed to have learned all the wrong lessions from Scholar of the First Sin and popped me in an open world that felt more like a chore to explore than I'd like. Also, some of the best bosses of the game went to unfair catagory more than frustrating, but rewarding.

To remind people I still enjoyed my time with the game, but it's far from perfect.

Re: The Game Awards GOTY For 2022 Is Elden Ring

Wexter

Have yet to play GOW Ragnarok as I'm waiting for the PC release as I have zero plans to buy a PS5 (the games on it just do not do it for me and the exclusives I do want to play will either come to PC or will probably come to PC like FFXVI, FFVIIR2 and GOW:R).

But, I did play a fair bit of Elden Ring and it just doesn't do it for me. Fun game, I like the lore, but maybe open world Souls is just not a genre I like? The repeating bosses are annoying and the side dungeons are just meh. I much prefer Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 where the levels are tailored for you compared to Elden Ring where the dungeons are few and far between. If you haven't noticed I tend to prefer a more carefully curated linear experience than a a meh massive open world. It is one of the reasons Breath of the Wild is one of the few Zelda games I have no plans to replay as while amazing and generation defining the dungeons and bosses are probably the weakest in the series which tend to be 70% of my enjoyment with Zelda.

My GOTY has probably been Xenoblade 3, but even then the more I think about it I think I prefer Xenoblade 1 and Xenoblade 2 + Torna over it. Overall this year has not been a great one for me as while I loved Pokemon SV, and Bayonetta 3 I've been going back to more older games like Castlevania Lords of Shadow, the Mass Effect Trilogy and the Pokemon back catalog more than new releases. I'm sure that will change next year with Fire Emblem Engage, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Final Fantasy XVI and Tears of the Kingdom.

I give 2022 a 7/10. Too much water.

Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

Wexter

@Ogbert I think people get a little obsessive about the idea of "game preservation" rather than what actually is game preservation.

A random game pitch that a team at Retro made and Nintendo declined is not historically significant at all. This isn't like Metroid Dread which was in development, talked about by Nintendo, teased in Prime 3 and shelved before being revived by Mercury Steam. That is historically significant and saving information about the original DS version of the game is preservation. This really isn't.

If we tried to "preserve" information about every game pitch (which there are thousands of daily) we'd never get any actual work done (like finding prototypes, preserving development documents, dumping and preserving rare games and accessories). Not every little detail ever randomly talked about is worth preserving.

I mean this is a cool bit of trivia and neat to know, but we can go our entire lives not knowing this and nothing of significance is lost. The reason we preserve the personal writings and unfinished manuscripts of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Ayn Rand is because they are historically significant. We don't preserve the half finished manuscripts of Joe Smith in Tuscan, Arizona who has never published anything. It's not significant to preserve. It is sad to know this, but if gaming wants to be taken seriously they need to actually get serious to preserve the meat and potatoes of their industry before they preserve the fluff.

I will now get off my soapbox. This was less about this specific video and more the mindset of the average gamer.

Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

@nhSnork I could do the same song and dance I do every time that this needs to go through the proper channels at YouTube and if deemed fair use it will be restored. Or how this could be a misunderstanding caused by over enthusiastic intern or jr lawyer. But, I agree with you 100%. If people are actually passionate about changing the copyright system to reflect 21st Century media they should vote at the poles for politicians who will get the job done.

I'm tired of this discussion every time it comes up. People need to stop this "vote with their wallets" nonsense and start voting with their ballots and get politically active.

End of discussion.

Re: Microsoft Enters "10-Year Commitment To Bring Call Of Duty To Nintendo"

Wexter

I don't think Microsoft is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts to bring COD back to Nintendo consoles. I think on some level this deal is to minimize Sony's complaints to regulators about the acquisition. But, this also makes sense from a financial sense.

COD is very successful because it is on everything from PC to Xbox/PlayStation. The Xbox brand has been the 3rd place console by substantial margins since the Xbox 360 (depending on how you want to categorize the Wii U/Switch as far as generations). So bringing COD to Switch which currently is on track to overtake the PS4 in lifetime sales (the Switch is at 114 million units the PS4 is at 118 million) would be very beneficial for Microsoft and Nintendo.

Microsoft has a history of not making everything exclusive after acquiring the studio. Minecraft is the most notable and COD is about as big if not bigger than Minecraft. It just makes more sense to use COD to get revenue from all platforms than just isolate it to Xbox/PC and lose out of potentially hundreds of millions of eyes and wallets.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Performance (Version 1.1.0)

Wexter

@nightspades While I've been more forgiving of the bugs, I'm inclined to agree. Even with the "bad press" Scarlet and Violet are already catching up with Splatoon 3 in sales and are projected to overtake Sword/Shield. The patch was probably being worked on before launch just because it has been a noticeably more stable experience and I highly doubt the game got that optimized in two weeks.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I bet as you said it was a calculated risk and the game will get progressively more stable before the DLC gets announced at E3. Then they rope in more players with either a Morocco based expansion or a "Return to Kalos" DLC with renewed interest in a more stable and enjoyable experience for both new and returning players.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Performance (Version 1.1.0)

Wexter

What Gamefreak is patching Pokemon Scarlet and Violet to fix performance issues and technical bugs? Nah! Really? I thought they were a lazy company that did not care about their fans? Hope people can detect the obvious sarcasm. But, this should have been expected as they have been known to patch games in the past.

I agree with people that the game should had been delayed a couple months to fix some of the bugs. As @flightsaber pointed out that could just not be possible. As they pointed out if the Pokemon Company delays the games, they also have to delay the TCG, plush and other material products which could result in slowing down factory production and sitting on millions worth of product for months. Added in that delaying the games also delays the anime and anime is a massive production undertaking. To even produce a "filler" arc they would have had to start production on it six months ago to give enough time to write out the filler arc, done character design and given their animators and directors enough time to shift into the arc seamlessly or else if they just sprung it on them could have caused chaos. Anyone familiar with the early seasons of Dragon Ball Super can tell you a rushed production pipeline is awful for moral and anime production in general.

Delaying Pokemon is not the same as delaying any other games. The franchise is massive and I'd bet the games are probably one of the least profitable parts of it. But, the other parts rely on the games as source material so they can't just say screw it either.

It really is a chicken and an egg situation. But, the patches are a positive sign that Gamefreak is working on correcting the performance problems. Unlike what other commenters were saying, Gamefreak was never planning on abandoning the game after launch and probably had every intention of fixing the issues. It is just nice PR for Nintendo say say thank you for the feedback, but I bet their patch was probably in the works before the game even launched if I was a betting man.
