@NintendoWife I didn't. I think it's just a huge shame how Nintendo apparently has a big distaste for pixel graphics, almost as if they think it's horrid or something. And since I personally dislike the new style (a lot less universally appealing), it just makes me feel all the more annoyed by it.
I will never understand why Nintendo so vehemently chooses to ignore pixel art, in favor of an ugly, plastic-y artstyle they cannot even make to run properly on their own console...
I find both games pretty good, though their structure (find the mcguffins inside the dungeons) makes them a lot more predictable than most Metroidvanias. There's a lot more Zelda here.
@JohnnyMind Although I agree with your first part, I won't really benefit from the amount of different experiences different players will end up having. I am, after all, only one player, and I personally will lean towards only one or a few methods, because I will deem them most effective or satisfying (most people work this way, but I might be more extreme with it). This will take away from the variety I could have otherwise.
The second part, yeah. We haven't experienced the game and honestly, while I don't like the mindset Nintendo is having on it, a nice execution could really make this a lot better than the mindset suggests on its own.
That said, I thought the same about Tears of the Kingdom, and it's probably the biggest game disappointment I've ever had. On the other hand, I thought the same about Breath of the Wild and I loved it, haha.
@JohnnyMind It has pro's and cons. For me it's more of a con (though I get the appeal). I think this approach homogenizes puzzles a lot. Maybe this game can change my mind, but BotW and especially TotK sure didn't.
@SuperRetroArt I think it's more that some people are used to some higher standards in games. I'm used to playing 2D pixel-art games, and they've soured me on these awful and choppy ugly plastic-looking games.
@MSaturn Yeah, they frankly mess around with artistic flavor and game balancing. They're good enough if you have no other options, but they are not the games they were meant to be, nor are they upgrades.
@Pillowpants It's worse, because you already paid 60 for a game you now need to buy again if you want the extra content. It's what people have been complaining about with Pokémon for ages, but now it's SMT barely anyone seems worried. Nintendo fans are a joke.
Such a shame what they ended up doing with this series. After Luminous iX 1 it's clear they stopped really caring about this series. Now they ended up with this trash.
Ah well, luckily there's still Gravity Circuit I have to play.
@120frames-please If you really want it, you could always emulate. I don't like emulating current gen, but I emulate around everything before that generation of consoles and some people have no problem doing the same with consoles like the Switch.
@Mrkittyhead Yeah, there's no lack of puzzles at all in this game. It has more of them than ALTTP, so I don't get where NL is coming from. It's just that Ages has the most puzzles in any Zelda game, so compared to that one, I guess it's lacking in puzzles...?
@daveMcFlave PSP has the regular difficulty curve (unlike Pixel), but its ATB system is bugged. I always play the Japanese SNES version, retranslated with QoL hacks.
@personauser93 Why would you still be using an N64 controller when that thing doesn't even exist anymore? You're not even trying to open up yourself to new (old) experiences. Emulators exist. Use whatever controller you like, play in whatever resolution you like.
I quit when I died from literally the first turn I did once the tutorial ended. It didn't teach you particularly well. Played Final Fantasy Tactics a few days later, what a blast that was. And I'm never looking back to Fire Emblem.
@Piyo I loved Redux until I recommended it to a friend, who didn't know how to progress many times because certain objects no longer show prompts about what you can do with them (like the rocks you can shatter with Pegasus Boots). Now I just go without any patches.
Awakening DX just never needed a remake. Especially not one that removes the smoothness of the original and destroys the theming through its aesthetics.
@ComfyAko There's a many more games that simply got me into a genre, made me support indie scenes and developers, but these specific games genuinely influenced my personality and my career. Other games I can think of are Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 (which I think are on Switch Online by now), Mega Man, Castlevania, Live A Live, and more Squaresoft games.
Most of these games weren't even remastered when I started emulating. And though I'd like to go more into these official remasters now that they exist, oftentimes it's just not as good as sticking to a world where fans of all ages create wonderful improvement hacks and where you can choose which version or translation you like best.
Which makes me realise: Toby Fox, creator of Undertale, started with a ROM hack of EarthBound. Suddenly I realise Undertale wouldn't exist without emulation.
@ComfyAko Final Fantasy VI gave me my outlook on humanity, and that even if we all eventually die, our striving to make every day a good one is what keeps us going. Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (this was before the 3DS versions were released, which I bought for my brother eventually) gave me an outlook on maturity and what it meant (kindness, perseverance and not looks, acting all tough etc). Super Mario Galaxy 2 caused me to completely shift my stance on how gameplay alone can make a piece of art, Metroid started my appreciation for the Metroidvania genre, and yeah many more things.
My most profound example is Mother 3, though, which shaped my outlook on the world and my decision to study Psychology and do coaching and give workshops.
Some of these games eventually release as remasters, and even though they often play much worse compared to just emulating, I buy them to show my support.
@Jacket_p I don't begrudge that whatsoever. I don't know what made you think so. I bought the entire Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection even though I don't like these versions, to support the devs. I bought the Live A Live remake even though I'll probably still stick to the original. I often buy remastered releases even when mostly, they play like ***** compared to just emulating.
Despite actively supporting emulation and pretty much always favouring this freedom over Nintendo's incredibly childish stance on all this, I can't wrap my head around this idea of publishing Dolphin on Steam. Seems like the dumbest idea ever...
I will always support emulation no matter legality. There's been at least 50 games I got to play thanks to it that literally changed my outlook on life, shaped my philosophies, made me the person I am today. I'd go to jail to protect that.
@Linux7055 What causes that much of a difference? I'm very curious. I haven't played much yet and I do feel a little disappointed with how similar the surface is.
@EarthboundBenjy I honestly feel the same about Tears. it's a great game but it has so many little nagging issues that it easily drops down to an 8 in my imaginary review catalogue.
@TotalHenshin I guess that makes sense. As someone who plays a lot of emulated games, I have a huge backlog of hundreds of wonderful games I can enjoy, and a Steam/GOG backlog of indies as well. When something is announced, I go "we'll see how that turns out, maybe it won't be broken on release."
Feels a lot more fulfilling than all that negativity.
@RubyCarbuncle I'd base my interest around what I see. That interest stays. It's the same footage, after all. It's not a switch in my head. It can go into the background, but don't tell me you suddenly don't like Hollow Knight anymore. That's bull.

Re: Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom's Frame Rate Is "Even Worse" Than Link's Awakening
@Not_Soos Luckily, people don't blink every second...
It's funny, because it's Nintendo games that made me so appreciative of 60fps.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom
@Lofoten it's probably more than 1/4th of the people. Reviews don't represent a general populace.
Besides, there's also more of these "mixed" reviews than NL is showing.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom
@HammerKirby I mean, you don't want to feel empowered as a player who is clearly meant to be empowered by all the choices they're given?
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom
@OctolingKing13 They basically said the opposite. Some of the stuff from the last two entries is holding this game back.

NES because SNES has way worse controls. Usually I prefer SNES versions but they dropped the ball with this.
