Re: Talking Point: The Critical Importance of Black Ops 2

TheGreenSpiny

I see we're back to the old Nintendo 3rd party conundrum. Truth be told this game won't make a damn bit of difference for the Wii U. People who are into COD already have Xbox/PS to play the game on. They are not gonna jump ship or buy the Wii U version. You'd have pry their sweaty Dual Shock/ Xbox controller from their dead hands before they ever touched a Wii U tablet. The only way to get the "hardcore" back to Nintendo is with Wii U exclusives that can't be played on any other systems. Something like an Eternal Darkness sequel, or an extremely polished sequel to Geist that delivers on the promise that the first game had. Some form of killer app that only Nintendo can, or some third party is willing to provide.

Third party support is great and all, but I have a feeling the Wii U is going to end up like the 'Cube with 3rd party AAA titles massively underselling.

Re: Miyamoto: "F-Zero Could Work on Wii U"

TheGreenSpiny

For those people complaining about Maximum Velocity, that game pretty much sucks along with other 2D F-Zero games. If you really want to know what all the fuss is about you need to track down a copy of F-Zero GX and give that a spin. It really is one of the greatest racing games ever made.

Re: Aliens: Colonial Marines Wii U Definitely "Not a Port"

TheGreenSpiny

@james: A port is a game that's been built for one system then ported to another. Meaning it was not built from the ground up for that system. It always carries a negative connotation. It may be the same game as the PS360 version, but it was built from the ground up for the Wii.

Re: Feature: The Super Mario Renaissance

TheGreenSpiny

@sinalefa: That bad camera was always there in Sunshine, which is the biggest reason I've never gotten into the game. The design is suburb, if a little convoluted, and the graphics hold up really well, but that damn camera makes the game virtually unplayable. It was an improvement over the Mario 64 camera, but with the games added difficulty level it makes all the more apparent.

@CapedGodot: Actually Samus is the goddess of gaming.

Re: N-Space Would "Love to Work" on a New Geist Title

TheGreenSpiny

I second what #3 said. I would love to see sequels for both games.

As for Geist, it was a brilliant game design with a poor execution. If they make a new one I'd like to see it more polished than the last one. And for god sake come up with some better art direction. They picture of that geist makes me cringe.

Re: Mobile Dev: "Iwata Makes Me Fear for Nintendo's Future"

TheGreenSpiny

I agree with JakobG. I don't think people understand what Free2Play means. Angry Birds is NOT F2P. "Games" like Farmville and Maple Story are free to play. What that means is you get a stripped down "trial version" (for the lack of a better term) that is free, but if you want to get anywhere of beat the game you have shell out real cash for weapons/items. People who get hooked on these games end up paying way more than $40-$60 that they'd pay for a full retail experience. Not to mention that these games are often shallow, and don't offer much in the way of gaming experiences. They only reason somebody would fork over money for Farmville rather than buy Harvest Moon is pure ignorance.

Re: 3DS Celebrates First Birthday in Europe

TheGreenSpiny

I bought a 3DS last august, and it's like the gift that keeps on giving. Between the ambassador games, the freebies Nintnedo gave out, and the free games I've been getting from Club Nintendo, there simply isn't enough time in my day to play the 3DS. And that's not to mention the retail releases.

What surprises me the most is how the system keeps growing on me. When I first started playing it, I didn't care much for the 3D effect. Now I can't play games without it. And while the first batch of game I bought were solid (DoA, RE: Mercs, Ghost Recon, Star Fox), the next batch has completely blown me away. MK7 is far better than MK Wii. SM3DL has quickly become my favorite Mario game. RE: Revelations is the RE game I've been waiting forever for. And last but not least, I've finally got around to playing Ocarina of Time 3D, which I found a few months back for half price. I've haven't played that game since I had the original gold cartridge stuck in my N64, and I forgot just how good that game is. It is quickly becoming my favorite handheld game of all time.

Re: Mad Dog McCree Takes Aim at 3DS

TheGreenSpiny

I thought about buying the Wii game for Sh!ts and giggles, bit never saw it sold anywhere. The videos for it look so awesomely bad, what with the obvious time of day changes from shot to shot. Truthfully though, I'd rather have Night Trap.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

TheGreenSpiny

@Grimbidoo: There is a difference between delay and obvious delay. Learn the difference then try and make your argument. As far as the motion flicks go... What's the point? Why not just stick to the IR? It's faster, smoother, more accurate and they use it for the main menus.

@Ben_Rage_V2: I've never had a problem with my set up, so unless SS requires a different set up than the rest of the Wii catalog, it's an issue with game design.

@gamesake: Link was holding the damn bomb overhead when I made the throw motion and he swiped his sword. He did this several times when trying to fight that second boss in the game. I kept getting killed because of it. There was another part of the game where I had to throw the bomb into a cage, and every time I made a throw motion he rolled the damn bomb instead. It took me like 30 tries to get it right. For a game that moves at a glacial pace things like this only serve to slow the game down and make it even more boring.

Re: Review: Zuma's Revenge (DSiWare)

TheGreenSpiny

@SkywardLink98: That doesn't matter. The price of the game at the time of the review is the only thing that matters. Not all games go on sale. And most games that I see on sale are not worth picking up in the first place. Not every game is worth the full asking price, despite that nearly ever game retails at the same price. The amount of content more often than not determines a games worth. If you think about every time you go to a movie you get roughly the same amount of content for the same price. All movies tend to be about 90 min. to 2 hours, and the theatre is not going to charge you different prices for different movies.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

TheGreenSpiny

@GanonDorf: Yeah, bombs gave me too much trouble for a simple little thing. I've only played the game sitting on my couch and the coffee table often go in the way while trying to roll bombs. Often times I made throwing motions that registered as rolls. And those stupid bird statue menus... whose bright idea was it to ditch IR and use motion flicks instead? Like I said some baffling design choices. I just getting tired of all the people that say "Nintendo finally fulfilled the promise of the Wii with Skayward Sword" and other crap like that. As I stated some games that I own have better motion controls than Skayward Sword without the motion plus (Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands comes to mind.)

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

TheGreenSpiny

@grimbidoo: Motion conflict happens when you have bombs equipped and you try to throw one and Link slashes his sword instead. You yourself have called out "the obvious delay." While every motion controlled game has delay, it shouldn't be as obvious and noticeable as in Skyward Sword.

@Ren: Nope, I use guns to protect my home from mogoblins, octorocs, and the like. If I'm feeling lazy I just send my dog after them.

As far as SS goes I have too say it been the most disappointing Zelda game I've ever played. It did not live up to the hype. And I get really tired of people saying how great the controls are.

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

TheGreenSpiny

@ Grimbidoo: Sorry but anyone who's played Red Steel 2, or Wii Sports Resort knows that Skyward Sword has terrible controls. I've played non-motion plus games that had better sword fighting controls than SS. SS has slow unresponsive controls, that is a fact. It also has motion conflicts that screw up the controls, that is a fact. Maybe for some people this doesn't equate to terrible controls. I also never called anyone stupid. Any yes I do own SS and have played several hours into it.

@Haywired: If you are miming and flailing, then you are playing the wrong games. You shouldn't see your arms flailing about in front of you any more than you should see your thumbs pressing buttons. I've played a few games where reliability was not an issue. Though I've probably played more games where it was an issue. As I stated earlier, if developers had gotten the controls right, more "core" gamers would have looked at the Wii in a favorable light.

Also nobody said Nintendo invented motion controls, they just made them popular. They were putting gyro censors in GBA games long before the Wii. And who could forget the Power Glove?

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Motion Revolution

TheGreenSpiny

I'm sorry but people who think that Skyward Sword has great motion controls haven't played many Wii games. Skyward Sword has terrible controls and the whole game is riddled with baffling design choices. Some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had were because of the Wii (and some of the worst too.) What baffles me about so many Wii games is how so many games seem to get the controls right or they completely fail at the controls. How many good games were ruined by awful controls? (Okami anyone?) On the up side there were a few bad games I played that nailed the controls. Yeah, sometimes these just boiled down to bad design choices (waggle to jump in De Blob for example.) There were some games that were just a mixed bag (Manhunt 2 has way too much IR flicker, camera was mapped to the nunchuck gyro!? WTF?) I'm willing to bet that if most of the developers go their controls right, then the Wii would be looked on more favorably be the larger gaming community.

@JuLeDoS: 1 megapixel=1 million pixels. Under your argument camera of yours even outpaces the highest end PC. Digital Still Cameras have long outpaced Digital Video cameras for one simple reason: storage. As far as the Kindle Fire and the other tables go, the screens may be higher resolution but the processors are made to run simple apps, and surf the internet not render and play complex video games.

Re: Indie Developer Phil Fish Says Japanese Games 'Suck'

TheGreenSpiny

The problem that bothers me about this guy and many of the comments here is the over generalization of "eastern" and "western" games. And yeah, I'll admit to thinking the same way a lot of the time... When I hear "western developers" I think of EA and Activision, both of whom I equate to garbage(poorly made games with lack of innovation, annual sequels, etc. . RPGs and FPS are both guilty of a lack of innovation. I think the industry itself has the problem on all sides of the spectrum. Many times when the "new" and "innovative" games come out it fails to find an audience, sells poorly and is never heard from again.

It's reminds of the comments I often hear about movies and TV shows where people complain about remakes, reboots and sequels. People always ask "Why can't Hollywood come up with something new?" The answer is that they do, you just didn't watch the TV/movie and it was canceled/failed at the box office.

I will say that the majority of the games I like/play are from Nintendo, and most of those games are Japanese developed. There are exceptions to these rules of course, Metroid Prime has been my favorite series of the past decade, and that was western developed. But it's also hard to deny the eastern influence on what has basically always been a Japanese developed game. But the opposite is also true. Mario never struck me as particularly Japanese what with the hero being an italian plumber and all. The same goes for Link or Donkey Kong.

Other series outside of Nintendo also take this approach. There is no denying that Suda 51's works are very Japanese, but he also sports a heavy western pop-culture influence.

Personally I'm of the opinion that most people don't want change/innovation. Look at the reviews for RE: Revelations. How many reviews praised the game for allowing you to run and shoot at the same time/ use dual analog? Do you really want to change RE into generic 3rd person shooter #568? I don't. I like the fact that you can't run and shoot at the same time in RE. To me that makes the game unique/innovative.

@Bulbasaurus Rex: How is Mario or Kirby not full of over the top weirdness? Where would we be without Wario Ware, Phoenix Wright, No More Heroes, and others weirdos from Japan?

Re: Feature: Nintendo's Biggest Blunders

TheGreenSpiny

@117 SDcazares1980: The Gamecube disc size wasn't a disadvantage. Just compare RE4 on the Cube to the PS2 game. Besides the extra content made for the PS2 game the GC version was superior in every respect. As your own MGS example points out the smaller disc size meant they simply used more discs when needed. The GC had tons of AAA 3rd party games that just didn't sell well. And they were not watered down and broken HD ports like the Wii often gets. Many multi-platform owners simply buy 1st party titles or exclusives for Nintendo systems which is why they have become increasingly reliant on 1st party support over the years.

@TruWiiMaster: I agree that having a port-friendly system undermines the uniqueness of the system, it also means that system will get more quick and dirty ports. (see also: PS2) I don't believe that Nintendo ever made "M-level" games but they have published a few "M-rated" games made by second party developers. (See also: Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Eternal Darkness, Geist)

On a side note... you should change your name to TruNintendoMaster since you seem to understand the company so well.

Re: Review: Metroid (3DS eShop / NES)

TheGreenSpiny

@geonjaha: I don't agree. I think this game holds up great except for two things: the slowdown in the game, and the fact that your health resets to 30 every time you die, which makes a hard game painfully difficult. The gameplay remains largely unchanged in all the sequels.
