I wouldn't call this a spiritual sequel to anything... It's a literal sequel to an awesome eshop game for the Wii. The Wii game was better than about 99% of the retail games released for that system. I'm gonna get this day one.
Balance board support was the one thing that really interested me about this game. I might have downloaded it back in the day if it had nunchuck controls back then, The same goes for pixel racing.
Great article Thomas. I agree with just about all of your points here. The eShop would be a great way to give people long neglected franchises. After seeing what Shin'en did with Fast: Racing League on Wii Ware, I have no doubt Nintendo could could do a full blown F-Zero for the eShop. I would be great to see a new 2D Metroid game on the eShop, maybe alongside a WiiU 3D release. (Kind of like Nintendo's old 1-2 punch of Fusion/Prime) I would pay for DLC for my favorite games if it wasn't something lame.
I think Nintendo needs to keep at it. Give us more sales, don't price the DL games so high, and keep pumping out more stuff. There really is nowhere to go but up.
@RupeeClock: The sword is the one thing that bugged me most about the video. Why the hell is it CGI? A cheap plastic sword would have looked better than that.
@Gundam00: You've clearly never played Dementium because that game had one of the best soundtracks to any game I've ever played. The sound design made that game downright scary.
I would only consider downloads if these games are cheaper. I could care less about the box & cart ect., but paying full price for something that is way cheaper for Nintendo to produce is a rip off.
I'll admit there are a few games that I wouldn't mind as a download, but not at full price.
@BudrSbastig: There's one little flaw in your argument... neither Sony nor MS have made a decent controller so far. I don't need or even want acheivments/trophies. Nor do I want online for my Mario games. Lose/Lose.
Koos: Dreamworks is better than Disney/Pixar. As far as the game goes, Wayforward is like the only company that makes good licenced games. I'm sure that won't fail this one.
@lollipopchosaw: It's not unusual for entertainment companies to release a works that they know may not make a profit. Nintendo can take it's millions it made of the Wii localize a few games to earn the good will of their fans.
I thought analysts were supposed to, you know analyze... Do research? Something like that. As others have pointed out the Classic Controller and later the Pro, along with the old Cube controllers all worked with the Wii. Most of the COD games for the Wii did not support those controllers.
You keep on truckin' Patcher and one day you'll get better at your predictions than Puxatawny Phil.
Gotta love Patcher. The guy is less accurate than Puxatawny Phil, and he somehow manages to keep his job. I'm with everybody else here, I won't buy any FPS games that don't support the old 'Mote and 'Chuck. Just like I won't buy any 3DS games that don't have touch screen aiming. As cool as Zombi U sounds It just won't be any fun to play with dual analog.
@Kid3dizzy: The reason people hate COD is because the games just plain suck. They have less gameplay and features than most shooters that were available for the N64. It's like a developer looking at the success of Super Mario World, and deciding to make their own platformer with better graphics, but with the gameplay equivilent of the original Super Mario Brothers.
I think the lack of 3D movies is far less troubling than the lack of movies period. Can't you download movies to iDevice or tablet's? They need a service for buying movies for download on the 3DS. Then, maybe offer 3D movies at a premium price or something. That would certainly help it as a multi-media device.
Good luck James. One thing I admire is that you always kept things positive, the best thing I like about this site. The big reason I rarely visit other sites is the lack of Nintendo coverage and of course the the negativity and hate that much of the gaming press lobs at Nintendo.
Ok so my big question is this... How do VC games look when played at the original resolution (with the Gameboy borders) ? Do they look sharp or a blurry mess like they do in standard mode? Same with playing DS games, how do those look in the original resolution mode?
@BulbasaurusRex: Well, thanks for the explanation. Much better than Birdo's up there, which means nothing to people who have never played a golf game outside of Wii Sports.
I'll give it another whirl, but I still think golf games are pointless without motion controls.
@AlexSays: Are you even a club Nintendo Member? Gold and Platinum prizes are free on top of whatever you spend your coins on. If you think you could make these posters at Kinko's go ahead and try. That's kind of like saying you can play HD games on your Gameboy, not gonna happen. Shipping these posters and cards costs more than 99 cents (and that is free also). Use some logic when you try to make an argument.
I remember buying this game back in the day and it was huge disappointment. It was pretty painful to play back then. Not surprised at the score at all. I wonder when Operation C is going to hit the VC?
@sinalefa: Super Mario Sunshine and Shadow of the Colossus were never that good to begin with. Eternal Darkness sells for less than $20 these days, unless the price has spiked in the last year or so.
So your main reason for disliking this game now was the lack of auto save/checkpoints? You should know better Jon. Have people become to lazy to stop and save these days? The lack of auto save is an important feature as there was a few times that I had to restart from an old save file because I screwed something up along the way. This game was all the subtle things. Events you do in one time period effect the rest of the time periods. There are so many little touches added to this game to make it awesome. The narrative is one of the best in gaming. I wish Nintendo would put SK to work on a sequel for the WiiU. That would make the system an instant buy for me.
@Smooth27: Having logged many hours on DS fps I can tell you that the d-pad and touch screen beat dual analog every time (no stylus needed). Anyway it all comes down to game design, you design the games for the system they're going to be played on. It makes no sense to try and shoehorn a "standard" control scheme onto a system that doesn't support it. Since most of the games that that are made for the 3DS are not direct ports of their console brethren, why bother trying to emulate the same control set-up? It's just lazy "me too" game design. I want to play video games not be a camera man.
@SteveW: NES games look fine the way they are. I could care less about those. GB games already look bad, they will look 90% worse on the XL. The games are designed for a set resolution, blowing them up to bigger screen will make all the blemishes all the more noticeable.
@smooth27: With the exception of Battlefield all of those "great AAA titles" are available on the DS. (Not to mention many of these franchises were on the PSP also!) If the DS versions of Kingdom Hearts had camera issues then Konami should have fixed the game before they released it. You're kidding yourself if you think that dual analog is in an way better than circle pad+touch screen. Time to stop being lazy like game developers and learn the new control options.
As far as the 3DS XL is concerned, this thing seems pointless. Games are only going to look worse on the bigger screen. I can only see this being useful for people with bad eyesight, even then the games won't be sharp and could still cause problems. The ginorminty of this thing severely cuts down on the portability factor. As Aaron suggested, does Nintendo want us to carry man purses (or one of those European Men's shoulder bags) around?
I would love to see Gamecube games on the VC. Though I would be more likely to buy them if they included both widescreen and HD support. Adding "New Play Control" ('mote and 'chuck please!) options for games like Geist would make them an instant buy. I would rebuy Eternal Darkness just to support that game in hopes that it would one day get a sequel. Make it so Nintendo!
