@Kimite Yes, I'm not even giving up hope on Japanese voice acting with English subtitles yet!
It kind of depends on how you define fluent, but I think of it quite literally. As in the ability to speak with little or no hesitation while discussing most types of subjects. Basically by thinking in the language in question rather than translating it in your mind before speaking. Yes I agree! Dubs are even worse in live action due to the lack of lip sync and the undisputable fact that we are not hearing the real voice of the person talking.
Really? That's great! If it's just items I don't mind looking those up at all. That's just good practice. Thanks for letting me know!
I've sent an e-mail to Nintendo UK now. It actually looks like I'm guaranteed a reply so that will be interesting! I will contact the other two as well.
Thanks, me too! : ) Yes, I doubt we're adding much to the debate in here right now (sorry everyone!) By the way I assume you're getting the Switch version? Planning on getting any multiplayer games? : )
@Fath Well, I disagree. Although popular in the west, Zelda has always been a very Japanese product. It has never been westernized in the same way Final Fantasy has been.
As I've admitted earlier, my Japanese is not good. But I am studying it at university level and I'll tell you this much: Many other language dubs are not doing a very good job at staying true to the original. And I can tell you that from only a few sentences heard in the trailer. This is often excused by localization, but that will always just be a tool to fit something to a larger audience at the expense of the original writer's ideas.
Also, my native language is Swedish. There is no such dub (I'd prefer the Japanese one anyway). So the whole thing about experiencing it in your lnative language isn't even possible for me.
@Anti-Matter Too bad I didn't write this sooner. As you can see I'm already in a position where I know about these things. Hopefully some beginner read your post!
@Fath The director doesn't even speak English. It's true for most of the staff. Of course Japanese is the original language. It's the language the developers speak and the only language they are able to control the quality of.
Yes, hello fellow Scandinavian! : D I barely put any effort into learning English but I've been fluent for so long. School played a part in it in the beginning, but subtitles and games did just as much. I've tried that. I get the gist of it but that's not really good enough for Zelda I think. Which is also likely more complex.
@Kimite Yes I could probably settle with no voices at all, but I do prefer to have them. Even the wordless moaning present in earlier games add to the atmosphere.
Well, actully I'm Swedish so as you can guess it's pretty much the same here. It certainly helped me learn English back when I was a child but then I also had the basics to build upon. I don't watch a lot of anime these either days so it could be that it'd be more helpful now that I've studied Japanese for a while.
Alright, I'll try sending one to to each of Nintendo of Europe, America and Japan I think. : )
@Kimite Yes that's possible. And that's why it probably has to reach notable figures before media will start caring.
That seems kind of dispruptive as it's necessary to change the system settings rather than option in-game. But thanks for the tip. If I'm desperate enough to play it anyway I might resort to that. I just hope it isn't like Phoenix Wright (Japanese version) and Pokémon where there are separate save files for each language.
I'm jealous of all you people who seem to learn Japanese by simply watching anime. Though I've never watched it daily so maybe that's the issue.
Oh, I guess so then! I have only really contacted Level-5 before and they never responded.
I probably wasn't alone, but I sent NintendoLife a tip about the news covered in this article. I also mentioned the petition, but they didn't include it. I've also voiced my opinion elsewhere. I'm perhaps a bit desperate. xD If they don't change this I probably won't play the game until next year. I'm studying Japanese but I'm not quite there yet. I'd have to look things up too often.
I doubt you'll get a reply, but I'd of course appreciate that! : ) I can do the same if you'd like. And I'm sure they will at least read it, so it will always count for something.
It's sad to see all the condescending and gloating comments in here. Since it seems like you're all from North America, I'll have you know that a western (the genre) movie came on once on Japanese TV when I was there on vacation. A cowboy opened his mouth and the Japanese dub came on. It sounded absolutely ridiculous.
You could try seeing it from that perspective or just accept that people have different opinions and wishes.
@Kimite If I'm not mistaken there was extensive media coverage about those, which boosted awareness. I don't see that happening this time, but I hope so.
@darkgamer001 I understand that you were debating the impact of the petition and not its existence. In any case most people need to be told to send e-mails or letters, most won't generally take that initiative. Campaigns like Operation Rainfall and Bluebird require yet another level of effort from a number of people. I wonder if there's enough time for such a project. I mean the files are already there, so it's be super easy to patch. But I somehow think success would have been more likely if there'd still be time for them to add it before the games go on sale.
@SanderEvers Read my second post in this comment section. Besides Nintendo has listened in the past. For example when there was a lot of demand on Miiverse for Earthbound and Mother on VC.
@darkgamer001 I confess I don't have much faith in the petition either, but I'd take any chance that effortless! As for the more demanding option you listed, I'll certainly do that as well.
I think this is sad. Miiverse was better suited to this type of stuff than other social media. It has categories like a forum which is nice. It would just be out of context if I started posting stuff on Twitter.
@J-Manix98 Right. I wonder where this series would be today if they had never gotten that ultimatum about selling enough copies or the series will come to an end.
I'm confused about the use of EUR and French along with the American version of the Seal of quality.
Also, the D-pad has arrows on it on the document picture but not in the other one. The player indicator light is missing as well.
@kevfrei That also struck me as something they haven't thought about with that logo layout. Tiny indeed. Actually I'm not really a fan of other aspects of that logo either, though it isn't really bad either. In any case I'm really excited about the console itself.
I'd be really happy if Switch could somehow change the idea most people seem to have of Nintendo's consoles being first party only.
@FantasiaWHT I can only guess, but since this is top-down everything appears where a background would be in a sideview game. Then it'd simply be BackGround.
It could also be typical Engrish. As V is typically transcribed as B in Japanese. For example something like "Visual Game" -> "Bishuaru gēmu". Or visual graphics.
@easygoingthief They did that 20 years ago on Virtual Boy. I'd be surprised if they took a step back now. Also considering such things as not releasing the vitality sensor because it didn't work perfectly for 1% of the testers.
@blackbox64 VR headsets of this type are only as expensive as the materials they're made of. A smartphone (or in this case the Switch) acts as the screen, that's the expensive part you already own. Apart from additional lenses, the rest could even be cheap cardboard as with Google Cardboard. Nintendo would probably pick something more sturdy, but plastic options generally cost less than a game does.
@Sakura Hah, I can imagine that it's hard! Are you in some kind of archaeology association or what's this membership about?
Actually I studied archaeology at the university and at least here it's a surprisingly popular education. So I've met plenty of young people with the interest. Few of them are also gamers though. And none to my knowledge would ave any interest in what Nintendo is doing.
I seriously once heard this conversation in between lectures:
"So many poo-poo-wee-wee games. I only play games with blood!"
"Yeah! Agreed! Blood!"
@Yorumi Sick yes, but it has to do with frame rates not matching real life, so it's kind of similar to motion sickness and such. But in Virtual Boy games you don't get that same motion issue as the camera view is usually static.
I don't think I've heard headaches being caused by that, but I could be wrong. I know I've never experienced it with VB and I've played for played 2 hours and 40 minutes once.
And regarding Virtual Boy, it's an underrated console and my go-to console for Tetris.
It's often critiziced for giving headaches or making you feel sick, but I'm almost sure it doesn't to anyone if used correctly. It's well known that people who need glasses but don't use them strain their eyes a lot, usually unconsiously and that leads to headaches. The same thing happens with Virtual Boy regardless of whether you have bad vision or not if you don't set the focus perfectly (not only "just enough"), otherwise your eyes try to compensate.
I've played Panic Bomber for hours and haven't felt the slightest headache or sickness.
I prefer playing DSi games on a DSi because it makes use of the entire screen. So I'm a little sad that I'll only be able to download them on my 3DS in the future.
@ToniK I loved the first two titles so much! And both Another Code titles as well. I would have preferred the original art style, but I'm still more than happy to see this.
Considering how poorly all of Cing's games sold, I would never have imagined any company would fund a game like this!
So they messed up princess Zelda's face as well. That light reminds me of selfies posted online, either taken in strong light or with high contrast editing/settings. Something people think will will hide their "flaws" and make them prettier.
Don't the two scenes shown briefly between 3:00 and 3:02 seem off compared to the rest too?
@TantXL Well, among retro gamers there are a lot of Nintendo enthusiasts. So I agree with her there. In general though, there aren't a lot of fans dedicated to Wii U or 3DS and modern day Nintendo.
Though most people buying these consoles regardless of prior scepticism tend to love them. So I don't really think it comes down to taste. It's simply not cool to play Nintendo and people worry too much about their image. That's my theory at least.

I voted for Bomberman way back. It's the perfect fit in so many ways. Iconic design, precense on every single Nintendo console until Hudson Soft was aquired by Konami and a unique way of fighting with bombs. Throwing, kicking and placing them etc.
@Seacliff It could be any of those. This is just something to convey an image of a handheld or controller as the patented tech (the shoulder buttons) would appear on such a device. If you look at some older Nintendo patents, you will see that they have at times patented console accessories for already released consoles, yet drawn these consoles as plain bricks.
That being said, this could still be a hint for a basic concept for the controller/handeld they have in mind itself. Simplifying (less buttons etc. than the final product) makes sense. But drawing something else entirely makes less sense. So a screen is still likely, or has been considered at some point, I'd guess.
