@Paulo Wrong collection. The WW bonus disc only had OoT and Master Quest. The Collector's Edition (which one could reasonably expect to include aLttP) was a few years later - 2004 sounds about right.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I call BS unless you have some evidence. The Classic NES series uses Nintendo's own emulator, some third party publishers were caught using pocketNES though. I think Majesco were caught out IIRC so maybe you're confusing it with that.
@JakedaArbok Not because it used an emulator but because it was a third-party emulator. Nintendo had already released games with emulators at that point so they didn't have a problem with emulation in general, just using emulators they didn't own.
@Minecraft_Master The virtual console wasn't even a twinkle in Nintendo's eye when Metroid Prime was in development. The article clearly states it was because of the third-party (probably open source) emulator. The version of Metroid 1 that was eventually included would have been using an in-house emulator (probably the same one used in the Zelda Collector's Edition disc for the NES games).
@Falien No it didn't. It had Zelda 1, 2, OoT and MM. Presumably it skipped over aLttP because of the GBA port and LA because the DX version was fairly recent and ran natively on the GBA.
@rushiosan To be clear, I meant in addition to the stick. For nimble movement I prefer the d-pad in anything that doesn't use analogue values for movement speed. I'm used to switching back and forth between the d-pad and stick. For the uses you mentioned I would use the stick, but for precision in movement I would use the d-pad.
Having seen the insides now, these are a big disappointment. They've done nothing to the mechanism to prevent the stick wearing out, but they've replaced the optical encoders with potentiometers, which means drift is now possible. It's literally the worst of both worlds.
I was hoping they'd keep the optical encoders and increase the durability of the mechanism.
God, I hope they've not changed the stick too much (or at all). I always preferred the feel of the N64 stick to other designs. I never had any issues with durability, but then I didn't own Mario Party. N64 games feel weird with resistive sticks, optical all the way.
Yup, moodycat got it in one. BotW, while a very good game, is not a Zelda-like. I've long felt that way and this list is a very helpful way of articulating it.
@Snatcher I don't think it's fair to say Nintendo have never been on par with others of their generations. The SNES and N64 were powerhouses and even the GameCube was second in its generation in terms of power. It's only the last 3 generations where they haven't bothered so much.
@Expa0 Bingo! Both of their metroidvanias on 3DS really missed the mark for me. They might be technically proficient developers but I don't think they really understand the gameplay of the games they're making sequels to.
@Donkey-Kong-Fan "the fantastic Samus Returns" isn't a fact though, it's your opinion. Neither BloodNinja or I liked it, so why would you expect us to be fine with Nintendo choosing the same path again?
@BloodNinja Glad I'm not alone here. I'll still buy it, but my excitement level is low. MercurySteam have already demonstrated twice that they don't get the genre.
I guessed as soon as I saw the stupid parrying. As you might be able to guess, I am less than thrilled by this news. This dev does not get metroidvanias.
So they're both on the cart and they run fairly well? My first thought when I saw it was a double pack was that the second game was bound to be a download code.
I'm not touching these "Cloud Editions" with a barge pole.
Cloud gaming as a subscription service I get, but if I'm buying the game I want to own the actual game - not access to a service that they have no incentive to maintain indefinitely.
Metroid developer? They made one remake of an existing game and didn't even do a good job of it.
What I look forward to is MercurySteam staying away from franchises dear to me.
They don't get 2D gameplay at all - both Mirror of Fate and Samus Returns were big disappointments (Metroid less so because by then I knew better what to expect).
AFAIK Sherlock Holmes still isn't fully public domain in the US despite being so in most of the rest of the world, hence the spoonerising. I kind of like the change, I think having a thinly veiled parody of SH instead of the real one fits the tone of the series well.
@liveswired You can't simultaneously claim it's a true Zelda game and very much like the first one while also claiming it's a shake up. It's either one or the other (it's the latter, not the former).
@Siactro What about the bad button mapping in menus? Games should use the system conventions for confirm and cancel regardless of the in-game action mapping.
B to confirm on a Switch game is one of the signs of a lazy port.
@Shadowthrone Twilight Princess on the Wii was a Gamecube game with motion controls clumsily stitched onto it. It couldn't be further from Skyward Sword in that sense. Twilight Princess Wii was a gimmick, Skyward Sword was very much not. It's a pity your experience with TP put you off playing SS.
@SalvorHardin The argument that BotW is somehow a return to the series roots has so many holes poked in it by now that I could use it as a colander. BotW, no matter how good a game it is, is barely even the same genre as a Zelda game let alone having much in common with the series as a whole.
@Natsura That's really weird considering the Wii doesn't know which hand you're holding the Wiimote in. I did all of my sword slashes with the flick of my wrist and I'm pretty confident that I could do it with my left hand (albeit uncomfortably as doing it with your right was for you). I can't check easily though, my Wii isn't set up at the moment.
@Natsura While I think they should have included the option to make Link left-handed, what about the game forced you to hold the Wii remote in your right hand? Surely seeing Link swing the sword with his right hand when you're using your left would have been less of a problem than trying to use your non-dominant hand?
@Enigk Same here. No physical means I'm in no rush to get this. Nothing motivates me to buy something sooner rather than wait for a sale like the possibility of it going out of print!
@Haruki_NLI Well this comment didn't age well. Given all the other Wii U to Switch ports it was kind of inevitable 3D World would arrive at some point.
Perhaps building on the tech that allowed the Wii U to stream the image to the gamepad and making it so the Switch 2 dock can act as a wireless receiver of the image from the Switch 2, allowing both screens to work in conjunction. Hell, I'd be ok with it even if it was wired. I really liked the Wii U and feel like it had a ton of potential that was wasted by poor marketing.
@Shepdawg1 I wouldn't mind too much if the next Nintendo generation consisted of separate home and portable consoles, but given the way the Switch prints money it's unlikely they'll stray too far. I feel that the touch screen on the Switch was an odd choice. Any game that makes full use of the touch screen is basically only playable in handheld mode, while games that need detached joycons are only playable in docked/tabletop mode. This means that games can't commit fully to one control scheme (or have to half arse it to be playable in multiple modes). I'd be happy if the Switch 2 had some way to allow simultaneous touch screen and TV use... basically making it also a Wii U 2.
Honestly, the fact they've reversed the aiming controls in Sunshine has put me off getting far enough to notice this. I'm hoping if they patch this they'll also give us a toggle to return the controls to "normal".
@designatius "you don't need to be a Swith Online subscriber. The game just needs connection to send user statistics and check your stay / away time (we do it with a server clock) : )"
That puts me right off. It's perfectly possible to use the built in clock and sending user statistics should be optional anyway. That's a really dreadful design choice that's ensured I won't get the game.
@Averagewriter I've heard this story before. Given how amazing the SPC soundtrack ended up being, I can't imagine what Hiroki Kikuta might have done with redbook audio. The remake of SoM doesn't really tell us much as for the most part it wasn't arranged by HK.
@retro_player_22 >This reminds me of the old Rare situation on the GameCube where Rare made Star Fox Adventures, the game was good but didn't sold very well so Nintendo just sell Rare away
I'm sure I remember feeling the "betrayal" of Microsoft buying Rare shortly before SFA actually released. I'm sure the development was done before the sale but I don't think the game was actually out.
@Madder128 Great console, completely botched marketing. Years into its life I had friends who still thought it was an addon for the Wii. I managed to convert them with Nintendoland's amazing asymmetrical multiplayer though...
Ugh, I wish you'd thought to mention the cocked up controls. B for confirm and A for cancel is madness, and if you reconfigure the controls to fix the menu then you break the in game controls.
I really would have reconsidered buying the Switch version if I'd known this.
