As if the addition of Byleth to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate wasn't enough to please Fire Emblem fans, Nintendo has also dropped info on Twitter detailing the next wave of Expansion Pass DLC which introduces a secret fourth house into the mix.
The Ashen Wolves are the latest clan to join the three existing houses in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as detailed in the trailer above. 'A house in name alone,' as the trailer informs us, it seems to be made up of disenfranchised students who need guidance. They appear to reside in Abyss, a place beneath Garreg Mach. "The surface world turned its back on us, and we did the same in return,” says Balthus who is joined by fellow Wolves Hapi, Constance and Yuri. It's unclear if the house has a leader or not.
DLC Wave Four and its side story, Cindered Shadows, will be available on 12th February (13th according to the Nintendo UK trailer) and is included in the $24.99 / £22.99 / 24,99€ Expansion Pass. There's no word on a name change to the game just yet, but we're eager to find out more about this secret underground house - we'll update this with more info as we get it.

Well damn, I need to finish playing the other two paths that I have not yet done by then. The big question is which house should I use with this DLC...
Two of those characters in the image look like pop singers...
If this is an expansion pack like DLC like Torna, I am all for it. I hope it is not another micro DLC story like with the 3DS Fire Emblem games.
Arguably the best news from the SmashDirect.
But how the hell are they going to put another house into that story?
Dagnabit, Nintendo, after dodging the bullet with Switch Lite, you still HAD to make one of your products' titles awkward in hindsight!😡
On a serious note, I'm intrigued. The character designs catch the eye as well.
Great! This game just keeps on giving lol
I still need to finish DQ 11 before I start other paths in this game though so should be SOON.
Also is this it for the season pass or do we still have something coming in Spring that was mentioned before?
Edit: They are calling it wave 4 so just released early, cool!
Colour me intrigued. Wasn't considering getting the dlc at all until now.
Will they change the title after the download as well?
That would be cool.
Sweeeeeeeeeet
Inject it into my veins. Now.
The title of the game becomes irrelevant then
Well now we know who 3 of the next 6 DLC Smash fighters will be.

Ooo, I've been feeling the need to go back even after completing all the routes, plus a second Blue Lions playthrough, over 300 hours, too! I was gonna do Crimson Flower again but on Maddening, but imma wait for this instead.
This is awesome! I will start a new game after this comes out! Woohoo!
More Downloading as long as no pay is required then that's good.
I just finished up my Verdant Wind run last night, after putting 3H aside for a few months. I started my fourth run, which I intend to be Crimson Flower on Maddening--assuming this content is available on all routes (and is not a separate route unto itself, which I assume it isn't, as they describe it as a Side Story), I'll hold off on my new playthrough till this has come out. Plus by then we'll have the leaked new classes that these characters represent.
Sounds stupid. How can they be secret? How do people join the m then. Do they communicate to new students through the dark web or what? What do they eat? Why live under a school if you have no teachers. Well I guess I have to play it to get some answers.
I wanted to say this during my smash char reveal and didn’t, now regretting it: only way the smash reveal timing makes any sense from marketing perspective is if they’re is a new FE or DLC coming. And here we are.
Already have the expansion pass, so I guess I’ll be returning to Three Houses on February 12.
Meh. Would rather have had them expand what was already there instead of adding another house. This will only convolute the story even more.
I am so disappointed with thee houses
They really should have angled this Direct as a Fire Emblem Direct, would have avoided a lot of backlash.
if people start hating Fire Emblem just because of Smash you truly are pathetic
Great news!. Any new DLC game content for this game I will get.
@brambalk if they’re deep under the school and basically rejected, they might not have even been aware of what was going on. Remember, they’ve mentioned multiple times in game that no one even is aware of all the secret passages down there (except MAYBE Rhea?) It’s not hard to imagine they’ve been there all alone and their story covers a lot of the plot holes. As for joining them, I imagine they’ll add a way to discover the passage down there during the part where you meet all the students, and then allow you to “pick a fourth option” like the Fates DLC did.
This looks good, but why only 4 students? I'm going to need 4 more
Amazing news, this is one of the best games on Switch.
Let's have a DLC with 2 houses: Montague and Capulet. It will be a great Shakespearean strategy game.
At least this Expansion Pass is shaping up to be pretty decent, like what they did to the (awesome) Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
In general those passes are a disappointment.
There's already talk of the abyss on one of the quests in chapter 3 where you speak to Anna so imagine it will add the underground as explorable place rather then a separate storyline
Well that is good news as up till yesterday Nintendo’s website said wave 4 was dropping 30/04/20.
Considering I just finished my 2nd playthrough yesterday with Crimson flower route and started FFXII playthrough. It gives me a deadline to finish that by.
@KBuckley27 In fact, most people already hated it long before SSB4/SSBU and its FE character clones were a thing. Everyone wanted to play it when it was a Japan-only title, but when it came to the west (thanks to Melee), people found out it was nothing but a boring anime TRPG.
I'd have a new Advance Wars a million times over those games.
This is to make up for Byleth in Smash.
@Trajan wrong article, by the way.
@rushiosan 3H has done phenomenal in the West, no idea where you’re getting the idea that “most people hate it”. The series has done better than AW, and if Days of Ruin didn’t bomb, they’d probably have continued that series as well.
Interesting, I loved the base game only played through one path though being Black Eagles. I might come back at some point to check out other houses, or maybe this DLC would be tempting if you can play as that 4th house and see some new characters.
I honestly regret putting off Three Houses for so long.
I swear this is the game that keeps on giving! So excited!!
...And now I'm intrigued. Need to buy the game first before I even dream of trying out its DLC lol.
@rushiosan lol, your comment is quite uninformed - these games have been some of the best tactical RPG-s in the market pretty consistently.
I need to get back into this game. Gray is my favorite color, and I think Byleth will have some kind of relationship with these guys. Those who have played the game will know what I'm referring to.
Also, now we know what the logo of the expansion pass signifies. Hyped!
@Torakaka No, Byleth being in Smash is an advertisement for this - content that should have been in the base game.
That shirtless hunk had better be gay romanceable.
Maddening news, need to hit the spa
@jrpacman No, they prefer to just give us old men to date instead 😂
instant buy
and people need to stop whining about byleth
if you don't like it don't buy it... because there are people who will
the game has more than enough characters so there is nothing wrong with one more FE character
Maybe these students are somehow related to that group of badguys the main stories did not touch that much upon? After all they say its a house in name only. So its not really a house, they just call it that.
If this gives us a proper, complete ending, I am in. If not, I might give it a miss. Hopefully, they use the story to tie up the loose ends and improve on what they had. Not a fan of three houses but the dlc deserves a shot.
@benj2687 I would say if your not a fan of the main game skip the dlc. I cant see why much would change to make you like it?
Also the main story will be likely untouched. It was overall a finished story told between 4 play thoughs i.e golden deer route focuses on lore building while another focuses on characters etc
@KingBowser86 why should it, i would rather not have paid £60 for the base game and got it when main was ready @ £40 and wait for dlc story to finish being developed Then pay for dlc.
The dlc exists because people will buy dlc not because its part of the main game and they decided to release it 9months later
Man my body is not ready for this yet, I still have to beat the other 3 routes and beat it in the hardest mode available
Well now the title is ruined!
@Mince You say that, but look at SwSh.
@jrpacman Yeah honestly as someone who is bisexual I always enjoy it when a game with dating lets me date men. Too many games only allow you to act romantic towards the school girl.
@benj2687 I'm trying to understand what you mean by a "complete ending" all three route are possible conclusions not a "complete" one and that's kinda the point. Each one focusing on what that house's major antagonist or goal was. For spoiler reasons I will not get into what each ending means for that specific route.
If you're hoping for a Fire Emblem Fates: Revelations ending where each side gets a happy ending it won't happen. Three Houses is a tragedy through and through. Each house does not get a necessarily happy ending and that's kinda the point. Also, the story does make perfect sense if you play each route as you get a complete picture as to the events and timeline of how this situation occurred (each house only gives that country's perspective on things). Everything is there, but if you only play Blue Lions, Black Eagles or Golden Dear on their own you still get a satisfying story for that specific house.
Three Houses is designed this way on purpose and giving a "complete" or a fan service ending like what we got in Revelations would undermine the story its telling. War is brutal, meaningless, can turn friends into enemies, and is ultimately pointless and unsatisfying. That's the theme of Three Houses and if you don't like it I don't think I or anyone else can change your mind.
@Wexter I completed the Golden Deer route (and started down the path of all the others) and was left unsatisfied. There are so many parts of the story that undermine the overall message. One complete storyline would have tied the threads together better in a game that is pretty much flawless in every other area (the gameplay is superb). I was just holding out for a single route as it feels like every route (played in isolation) is missing something. DLC probably won't help this but it is always nice to dream. I am glad you like the game but I really don't think it is finished 'story-wise'. The fact you have to play through 4 storylines to get the 'complete picture' just doesn't click with me like it does with others. I am just hoping the next instalment goes back to the one route method (although I doubt it).
@benj2687 Golden Dear is the most hopeful house thanks to Claude's outsider status. He is portrayed as a schemer, but his vision for the future is the one that is the best outcome for all. Golden Dear seems like it undermines the themes of the story, but it doesn't it just shows Claude's perspective more so you get a more removed perspective. Hence why he determines early on the real threat and that the "Flame Emperor" is not the real threat. Golden Dear is more world building than character drama that the other three routes are.
The other routes give a much more rounded picture and allows you to get the facts. But, if you mean "one route" as in there is a singular big bad and straight forward story that is more a preference than a flaw. Three Houses allows the player to get a more rounded view of the conflict and the story. You even play the villains in a route and see your students become radical to that cause due to misinformation. But, if you play that route first you think your the good guys and are misdirected by the game. That is a fantastic storytelling tool Three Houses can do that a traditional Fire Emblem cannot.
Is this going to be the last DLC for FE3H?
@PacMang for the season pass yes. Will they release more later though? I am not sure, but for now it is done.
Byleth in Smash is a side show, FE3H is the better game by far! (for me!)
But man! I don't have enough hours in the day! I still need to finish the other routes! I also have a job and several other awesome games I want to play - with more coming this year!
First world problems dude.
Edgegard was the most popular character for a while guess they wanted to give people more Edge so they created Edge House.
@KingBowser86
Oh come on the core game has 4 routes and takes a few hundread hours to complete. They have added content with both free and paid DLC and the expansion pass will be a good value in the end. Pretty hard to complain about that. Actually Nintendo has done great (quality and amount of content) with most DLC on Switch and they are hardly the microT people that EA and 2K are.
@KingBowser86 fair point, although i would argue in a game like that its a slip opinion its fun to find certain animal(pokemon) in diffrent regions of the map etc
And story content was always going to be new and cost etc like every good game this gen.
But the pokemon dex thing only after dlc announcement yeah I see your point, while it doesnt fuss me I can see the ‘issue’ just not that fussed about it.
@Mince Personally, I'd prefer a third version, because at least then I can trade/sell whatever physical copies arise once I'm done.
@QuickSilver88 If the value is in fact there, then my point is materially moot since people can buy the base game Used and all. I'll defer to feedback since I don't play this series, myself.
@rjejr dont jinx it man.
@ShadJV You mean fifth (Though I guess it's only 3 choices at first, obviously.)
@Blizzia nope, I meant fourth. I meant the part of the game where you choose your house is where this story would split off. Instead of the three other choices there, you’d pick a fourth.
@KingBowser86 What are you even talking about man. If this content "should have been" in the "base game" which is MEATY AS HELL and contains 200+ hours of gameplay already, we'd not have seen FE 3H for yet another 6 months. The game was already in the works for ages and it's an extremely lovely experience.
There is no way in hell anybody I know or can think of (including the entire Fire Emblem community on Serenes Forest or the FE subreddit, OR the FE discord) would say "you know what, I wish FE 3H had not been out until End of January 2020 instead, including this side story. It'd have made it a much better experience."
Because the base game is THAT good. THAT meaty. And before going into the 4th house you'd likely need to beat the other 3+1 routes in the game (which takes on average 200+ hours, much more if you go crazy with micromanagement and seeing all dialogue, upgrading units as much as possible or seeking out special items).
I'm not saying this as some mindless fanboy/fangirl. It's just how it is. This is content developed after release, and you know what, it's a good thing. This kind of DLC is worthy of the price tag for the expansion pass. What the actual DLC holds, we'll see.
@ShadJV Attempt at humor failed, carry on.
I was hoping for another path to make the expansion worth purchasing, but I didn’t envision that being a new, underground house. I’m intrigued.
Hows the title ruined.... there were 4 musketeers remember.
@Blizzia I doubt it, but neither of us can prove it. At least with Pokémon, the DLC was so sudden that it's more or less understood that it's a scam.
I need to beat the game first...
@ShadJV hey if ninjas turtles can live in the sewers without notice so can these guys.
@KingBowser86 It's not something you need to prove - it's common sense. Pokémon also wasn't a scam. Something that is ready in 6-10 months isn't something they could put in at release. It's simple.
Believe what you want. I call BS when money's involved.
@RiasGremory Waiting for Super Smash Bros spinoff "Super Fire Fighters: All Swords All the Time".
Hey you damn kids get your swords outta my Smash!!
@Blizzia I never got this idea that Expansion size DLC like what Fire Emblem or Pokemon is getting is a scam. There is always ideas game developers need to put aside when developing or else the game will simply never come out. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna was originally meant to be in the game, but was cut due to the developers not liking how it interrupted the flow of the story. But, they felt it was important enough that they revived the idea as an expansion for a later date. And why shouldn't developers get this option to bring back ideas or story elements as DLC? Because some how adding more to a game is inherently anti-consumer? That is some non-sense especially when the content is purely optional and reasonably priced based on what you are getting. If you don't like it developers are not forcing you to buy it (and in Pokemon's case allowing you to still get the new Mon through trades and Pokemon Home).
This was very common in the 1990's PC scene. Diablo 2, Starcraft and Ultima 7 got massive expansions after the original games release. Should those expansions never have happened because they were developed after an arbitrary date like the initial release of a game? Its like people think DLC is still a term used to only describe small hour long episodes or lazy additions to a game to make a quick buck. Sure that is still true with some titles. But, DLC Expansions should be what we want to promote with developers even if it costs up $15-20 because it adds so much to the game and lets us have more to a game we want to keep playing and enjoy. Breath of the Wild is a case of DLC that really did not add much, but I can name more than enough games that added substantial amount of content to the base game through DLC. I.E. Dragon Age Origins, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (I can go on).
@LUIGITORNADO you're complaining about what they're doing with the story... And you don't even know what it is yet?
Maybe they planned this all along and it will feel right after playing.
In just saying don't bash on what it does to the story until you know what it does to the story. From the trailer I think it sounds interesting
@KingBowser86 I feel sorry for your lack of trust and pessimism tbh.
@Mince You and me both! It's a large portion of all I've ever known from interacting with others. Regardless, I haven't had any very strong ammunition in this department UNTIL Sword/Shield. That's just too sudden.
@KingBowser86 yeah i usually always have the opposite opinion i have found, but with games i just decided they’re for fun so I wont allow any thing but fun to come from them now. Except for a few discussions/debates
They want money for their extra work (well obviously).
They cut the pokedex (kinda makes sense) its friggin huge, i don't want over 600 i want the best)
Etc overall its just opinion but fire emblem three houses was as good as it get and dlc from nintendo could be a lot worse. FOR ME ZELDA DLC WAS WORTHLESS AND THE MAP SHOULD HAVE ALREADY TRACKED MOVEMENT But it had little backlash there.
"They want money for their extra work (well obviously)."
That, I don't mind. But are they working "harder" and not "smarter" on these models and animations? Was it truly that much more effort? Not a lot of transparency. And that's only compounded by announcing DLC so suddenly.
"They cut the pokedex (kinda makes sense) its friggin huge, i don't want over 600 i want the best)"
And there are multiple camps on this rather difficult subject - give the other gens value by not having them all, must have them all in each game, have all but make questionable ones extinct (my camp), etc.
I'm not saying "I know I'm right" in my assertion, I don't, and that's the problem. But how Nintendo and Gamefreak are conducting business on their respective IP's could potentially be shady, and that's not cool.
