Let me tell you! When we are playing 4 player mk8 at my house, all people do is complain about 30fps! It's tough sitting through 2-3 hour play session discussions of frame rates. In fact, in 2 player we have counted frames many times and have frequently had gaming sessions ruined over that missing 60th frame!
Timely article as I just finished my play through of Zelda 2 last night. After 20+ years I'd forgot how tough it gets toward the end. I can see why it hasn't aged well to some as it deviates from what is currently the formula.
I never played original ocarina, only the 3ds version but I can tell why it is held in high esteem. Looking forward to the MM remake that has been teased forever now it seems.
I will likely pick up a great deal of these, but I am worried that we haven't heard more of their interactions. Seems like sky landers and infinity have a game to play their figures in. Amiibos are just ancillary to other games. Most kids are going to get a Kirby figure and, from what we know now, likely be a bit disappointed in what it does.
Hopefully we get a direct and some kind of sandbox game when the big amiibo launch occurs. I am still holding out hope for sports titles starring amiibos.
@Axed84 wow just how I felt about it. This is why I am really not big into demos as they can really give ppl a false sense of the game (ala MH3) and turn people off. Either the demo is too basic, too small a sliver of the whole game, or too complex to fit in a demo.
Demo rant aside, I am really glad to see Square Enix "wake up" to what most of us have known for quite some time: the west wants quality jrpgs!!!!
@brewsky amen to that! Knew I should have snagged dr Luigi. Fun game nonetheless, tho now I wonder if the remix sales other regions got were held back bc of this.
Apologies if this has been mentioned already, not going to fully catch up on the comments:
Price is what this all comes down to. A bad cheap game is still bad, but at least it is cheap. Therefore harping on bad games should be based on how much they cost, not their sheer existence. My issue is there is not good segregation on quality except the user rating, which I am sure is only done by a fraction of the purchasers. Compare NES pinball to zen pinball for instance. At a $10 price point for a zen table or package, does the NES pinball rate even a $.99 game? If zen pinball is an 8, what is NES pinball? A 2? I know people may gripe about indies on the eshop, but the VC is mixed into all that, and some of those games I wouldn't consider worth the memory space.
The eshop at some point is going to be too big of a mess to navigate. My only hope is that people are savvy enough to research the games before they buy it. I also hope the MK promotion introduced more people to the eshop. I frankly ignored it for almost the first year of the wii u (granted, I didn't miss much).
I'd like this to come to NOA just for others as I have already picked up the NES games in remix 1 that are worth a hoot. Nintendo would have to pay me monthly rent for things like tennis, golf, or urban champion to take up space. Funny how some games have aged so well (Zelda, SMB) and others make me recoil in fear and sadness (sadness that I paid full retail price for a few back in the day).
I'm one of the oddballs that is more concerned about looking cool, as I go with aesthetics when playing local co op. I refuse to win and look bad, as I see that as losing 😀
Picked up NES remix as my play reward so that and my massive backlog will keep me busy another week. Id really like to see the old final fantasy series on the VC one day. Also 1941/1942/Lifeforce/blaster master would be nice as well. For someone that hates the way Nintendo's account system works, I have spent a ton of money on it...
I got steamworld dig last time it was on sale. Great game even at full price. My only gripe is I would have preferred it on Wii U as I like the big screen to play on
I still have my NES, and it still works just fine. Who expects a xbox360 or ps3 to still work 15 years from now, much less 30? Nintendo stuff is built to last!
I enjoyed the reveal, and I never realized my character's default name was Robin in FE:A (guess I wasn't paying attention at that point!).
I don't mind FE series having a lot of characters, it seems like this could end up being a very crowded roster, something some may think of as "too much" and others just think of as fun. Put me down as thinking of it as fun!
Wow odd coincidence that I just started last night playing through all the Zelda's I have never played or haven't played in ages. NES/snes for nostalgia, and Minnish cap, tp, ss for new (or never finished).
I have to say it's amazing how much I remember from the original NES version to this day, having not played it in 25 years plus. I could see myself playing it again in 25 years, let's hope my wii u still works then!
Currently link to the past as fav, but I will vote in a few weeks when my journey is done!
I am sure there are people that buy a system for one game. There are likely a lot more that see a system with X games they may like to play, and that one favorite series or genre is what finally pushes them to make the purchase. I am like that for ps4: one the new batman comes out, I will get one to play batman, as well as other games id like to play.
That said, this game doesn't interest me but if it brings more over to the wii u as that finally tipping point game, so be it
I am sitting on a large pile of coins, so I think i'll get Paper Mario (having never played it, yet lacking a classic controller...). My concern about all these coins is how fast rewards will sell out. Something awesome could very well come out tomorrow, but considering how likely it is a lot of people are waiting out a good reward, by the time I see it, it could likely have been sold out.
I must be one of those crazy people who are going into this expecting a reasonably fun game where I beat stuff up as my favorite LoZ character(s). Having played 0 Dynasty Warriors games, and just about all of the LoZ games, I am not expecting gaming nirvana, just some fun.
3ds has a tough year to follow after last year. I may pick up fantasy life and persona at some point, but they aren't day 1 buys for me. I will pick up smash for wii u, but for some reason I just don't see smash as a portable series. Maybe I just prefer losing in the comfort of my own home, and not on the road...
I think they actually need a sandbox game for the Amiibos. Otherwise, people are buying the Amiibos and they are just going to sit on a shelf and gather dust.
In other news, I am likely going to buy a lot of them, and they will sit on shelf, gathering dust...
@Phantom_R Actually I didn't get back into consoles until 2010 or so I will fully admit the Wii craze passed me by at it's peak.
The thing is, something doesn't add up here. If Wii Sports sold half the Wii Consoles ever (let's just say), and the new, polished up and expanded version is coming to Wii U, then wouldn't it be logical to expect a pretty substantial marketing campaign? This seems to be akin to a new Star Wars movie coming out, with no buzz, trailers, or promotions. Sure, people with a Wii U know of the updated sports, but how about the rest of the potential buying-it population? It seems Nintendo is making a huge no-marketing mistake, which is something I think everyone agrees was a problem with the Wii U, and that just doesn't make any sense.
I think wii sports gets a lot more hype than deserved due to being bundled with the wii. Not that it's bad, just that people aren't necessarily buying the wii to play it.
That being said, I hope Nintendo promotes this a bit, at least to the point of putting a "U" on the retail box so ppl will pick it up. I enjoyed the first one and enjoyed the free trial games so will definitely pick this up!
@rjejr I think the problem is a bad demo turns people off a possibly good game. I thought the MH3 demo was awful and didn't get the game because of it. I've heard similar things about the wonderful 101 demo. A badly done demo of a good game can spell disaster, so perhaps they are just avoided. Old demos for old games, though. Can't argue with that!
I can confirm I got 399 points on the digital deluxe promotion for wii party u, which was enough to snag another $5! So it seems you get the eshop price of the game (I already had the other 3)
@JaxonH My personal view is that if I pay $X for a game, I expect roughly X/2 in hours of content. At some point a fantastic game that is simply too short leaves me going "wait a minute, I feel I paid for more than this". Pikmin 3 made me feel that was, as did that recent Castlevania for the 3DS (granted, not a Nintendo game). A bad game is just bad, and I feel ripped off. A good short game is still good, I just feel a little bummed if it doesn't meet my own personal expectations. I was only responding to your comment on "when was the last time Nintendo sold a game that wasn't worth it's asking price". That's a subjective question, so I gave a subjective answer
I don't know why people would already get up in arms about captain toad. I will likely buy it barring horrid reviews (which I doubt will happen). Retail means a lot of different things to people (just like triple A), so I'd say people are putting their own expectations of retail to what their belief of what Captain toad will offer, and then going off on that. Again, I agree with you (as I generally do) and that I won't judge the value of captain toad vs. price until I buy it and play it. It is rare that I buy a Nintendo game and think they didn't live up to expectations.
@JaxonH I'd say Pikmin 3 was a 39.99 game based on content. I loved every minute if it, but it could have been longer or had online multiplayer.
That being said I am really looking forward to captain toad! When it comes to puzzle type games Nintendo does seem to have plenty of content, so I am sure it will be a good buy.
I thought I had accidently clicked my way to Motely Fool with this clickbait article!
On the topic, I believe cross-buy isn't as critical as an account-linked buying system and not a system based system. If my Wii U breaks tomorrow, I would prefer having a bit of re-downloading on the new system, not a big hassle dealing with Nintendo that has the potential of not going my way.
I hope they make a few Amiibo compatible, and Amiibo focused games for the characters. I'm all for fun stuff in games I already own, but I'd really like to see $15-$20 eShop sports games (hockey, baseball, etc) that allow you to make a team with your Amiibo's. The sandbox aspect of these seems to be taking a back seat to Smash Bros, which is only natural for initial marketing. Hopefully we get some more info in the Directs over the remainder of the year.
Oh and goodbye $$ of course. I see at least a dozen I want already
@JQuest I enjoyed Darksiders II. Played it through on Wii U and have no regrets about my full price purchase It locked up 4-5 times on me, but that was always after a long play session. I didn't play it or even see it on other consoles, but I believe the Wii U version has all, or most all, of the DLC included.
@Mommar I was about to post the exact same thing. Also, the majority of male characters in the Zelda franchise I would rather push off a bridge (or tower...) than play as, except link, of course.
I've never played a dynasty warriors game, and, barring horrendous review consensus, I will get this game. Is it normal to have such a large character selection? It seems you'd end up with clones and homogenization after too many characters.
@Kilroy that is how I feel (your second post). If they "cartooned" it up a bit, I wouldn't care. It sticks out like a sore thumb otherwise, and clashes with the asthetics of the game. However I am not going to picket NOA over it, I just won't use it.
Really hope we see more than just interaction like smash bros for the amiibo figures. $10-15 sandbox games that are pieces of a larger ensemble (ala sports) would be a good way to go. Heck even some well done sports games using your amiibo figures to make a team could really take off with proper online support. A football* game where your defensive line is the likes of wario, bowser, donkey kong, etc... Just seems the amiibo concept has the potential to take the sports sims that EA has locked down and churn out annually or pick up the ones we don't see so often (hockey!!!)
*americanfootball mind you. I know zip about the other football!
Wow hard to believe only 1 3ds game on the list I am interested in (persona) and only luke warm at that. Probably for the best, my backlog is embarrassingly large.
Hate to further derail, but since we are on the topic...
If I plug in a flash drive on the back, and offload games (the ones I've beaten) to it, how does it load when I boot up the wii u? Do I "see" all rom+ flash drive games at once, or do I have to go to another menu to see the flash drive games. Heck, can I play directly from the flash drive?

Zelda 2 and NES remix for me. I think I would be disappointed if I didn't need any of the award games, but I do so I'm not!

Definitely agree with the 9/10. I don't think I have played a game with a smile on my face as much as I have this one since Wonderful 101.
There are also some jump/slide combos that are pretty dang tricky to pull off. My main complaint: not enough silver coins! Wish they "account" based.

If I plug in a flash drive on the back, and offload games (the ones I've beaten) to it, how does it load when I boot up the wii u? Do I "see" all rom+ flash drive games at once, or do I have to go to another menu to see the flash drive games. Heck, can I play directly from the flash drive?
