That file size is too crazy. This is one of the third party games I was most interested to see on a Nintendo console, but not sure it warrants half of your memory card. Like it looks awesome, but I can do without... If bigger switch 2 memory becomes affordable in the future then I'll check back in.
I have no experience with this series of games whatsoever. But I love the first two Paper Marios and Super Mario RPG so of course it caught my interest as an RPG. But watching the first hour or so of the game from someone on youtube... man it just seems REALLY boring. The art style, music...not really digging it. none of the NPCs or enemies stand out whatsoever, all of the environements hardly look different... I'll probably watch a random hour from the middle of the game because I honestly want to like it, but it feels like I'm trying to convince myself at this point when it should be the otherway around. same thing happened with the Peach game earlier this year. really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't happening lol.
As someone whos never played a Mario/Luigi game, as an RPG is it more similar to the first two Paper Marios (N64 and Thousand Year Door) or the later installments? Definitely plan on watching some gameplay once this officially comes out, but if someone wants to share their input it'd be appreciated!
@Teksetter @dojmin I am pretty sure the reason we arn't seeing Battlefront get a LR release while we see this one that just came out because those battlefront games are really big in terms of file size and they might have to use a bigger storage cartridge which cuts into their profits. the good news is we've seen that game get cut down in terms of size in subsequent updates, but its still way larger than it needs to be... my fingers are crossed as well.
@Anti-Matter lol same thing with the movie. I can't stand these talking Pikachus whether its Ryan Reynolds or this gruffy voice one. Extremely offputting and cringe to me.
@Sisilly_G thanks so much again for all the info. Yeah the Japanese release is only 66% as much as the NA/English version which is wild. So that is good info to know theres no downsides other than packaging. (both are pretty damn ugly, it would be nice if they at least made this premium editions less of an eyesore lol.)
@Sisilly_G ah I see, thanks for clearing that up. I'll probably bite in that case. Do you know if the Japanese versions will have no issues accessing that additional data on an NA/PAL Switch? Or is there some trickery where you need to make a seperate Japanese eshop account and then the data is tied to that(rather just have all my purchases and downloads tied to my main account personally)? It is funny because on playasia the Japanese versions are significantly cheaper than the English versions. (Both MK and Pokemon are basically the base price while the North American Pokemon is $95 + change)
I don't think it will happen for either of them, but I definetly see some kind of definitive with all of the DLC version to be much more likely with Mario Kart. Since it isn't a global release and theres always the possibility of them just rereleaseing that variant on the next Switch. (though I don't think this will happen as MK8 is already a re-release in itself ;p) With Pokemon they just move on to the next thing so quickly . kind of just rambled here so sorry if everything was super sporadic and thanks for bearing with me haha
@Sisilly_G thanks for getting back and sharing. i wouldn't have hesitated either. I think for me it will come down to whether the "download" is on the cartridge itself or if its a one time download code (meaning it will be useless for reselling or sharing with a friend). I'm not sure how it will work out.
not giving kingdom hearts a proper switch port (hopefully on the next Switch) will forever be the biggest missed oppurtunity for me, but even as a cloud version I'd rather play that over any of this other crap lol.
@Sisilly_G "What the hell is the rush". I bet they wanted to rush it out before the holidays. I'm conflicted as well. I'm not sure if it is even worth it, if half the DLC is a one time download. I held out thus far, but I really doubt they're going to do ANOTHER print with all of the DLC on there... Maybe on the Switch 2, but the rate Pokemon chugs out games I think they will honestly already be moved on to the next project. Whereas Tears of the Kingdom is something I see definetly getting re-released on that console.
Great move putting the two most appealing games as the ones that arn't physically on the cart. Other than force unleashed the rest of these have already gotten retail physical releases.
i ended up not buying this game because I remember getting burned with sword/shield and then reselling thme for "the full editions". Now this one that I've been waiting for will not even have the full DLC on the cart? What is the point then?
@S83 yea thats what I meant, thanks, Ill keep an eye out. just wasn't sure if it was something that only took preorders and sold out never to be seen again.
I give the Switch version of this game a 2/10 in the current state. something you mess around with for 20 minutes or so before moving on after you get tired of the mini games.
First of all you cannot purchase it on its own, its locked behind the service. Second, and most importantly using the rentals might be fun for some, but for me its just so unenjoyable and soulless of an experience. as of now(I'm sure this will change) you cant use your team from the Gameboy games.
The game could be a 10 for me if It could be purchased outright rather than locked behind a subscription service, you could use your team from the Gameboy games, and using teams from those games offered some of the modern eases of life that the current pokemon games offer (Bottle Caps/breeding, multiple use TMs/move tutors) because it was really painful to decide what you wanted to use some of your valuable TMs like Earthquake on back in the day lol. now that last bit is wishful thinking that has very little chance at happening so 9/10 if they fixed the other two. Stadium 1+2 are the spinoff games I had by far the most fun with in the entire series.
Good review. Expected something fanboyish since every Nintendo first party game typically reviews a 9/10 +(I'm looking at your Mario Strikers).. Unless your taking your kid to see it, this movie is really just a waste of time/money.
This direct was possibly the worst ever. We already knew Zelda was coming out in the spring and all we got was a name, so I'm not even counting that. Goldeneye literally got 5 seconds and we already knew that was coming. We don't even know if it's getting an actual release or if its locked behind the subscription service? The same game was shown at least 6 times during the direct(generic anime character farming simulator). Unless your a Fire Emblem or Pikmon fan, two niche franchises at that I can't see how anyone can say that was even an average direct. the third party one from June absolutely took a dump all over this.
even though I can see the announcement in front of me, its hard to believe we're actually getting one. Just so used to people saying its coming and it never happening. Lol feels good man.
@MastaRedSnappa thanks a lot for typing all that out, very helpful comment. i've been looking at alternatives for handheld if joycons give out and thats a great rundown of all my options.
@JasmineDragon your right. I apologize for my very unpleasent trollish way of getting my point across. Now it may be a good game thats just not in my wheelhouse, but I realized my frustration was moreso stemming from the fact that its hard to take reviews seriously especially when it comes to first party nintendo games. nintendo life even rated mario strikers a 9/10 in their launch review and called it the best sports game on the switch. Lol. something tells me whatever mario sports title comes out next, they will then call that one the best. theres just a lot of false hype/"shilling" in general these days it seems for whatever the game of the month is and its something thats becoming mildly irritating.
@Buizel I think it's ebay and other similar sites like mercari that have ballooned up US prices. if all of those sites were shut down and you had to sell your stuff in person the prices would come way down. reselling culture would be killed overnight. I don't believe these type of sites are nearly as prevalent in Europe and its probably not as easy to just ship it anywhere like in the US which is one giant country.
Not that I'm defending the game(havn't played it), but I have a feeling a lot of these "bomb reviews" have to do with certain people being salty that they didn't get review copies in advance. A lot of people probably also are going into it expecting something completely different from what the game is supposed to be.
@NinjaNicky From my observations more adults play the Switch actually. The demographic that highly prefers Playstation/PC/Xbox is that teen/early 20s gamer where playing online with their friends is all that matters and they think they are too cool for "kiddie" nintendo. Its a phase I went through as well. Late 20s and up my observations show that Nintendo dominates whether its buying for their kids, or playing through games/franchises that bring them strong nostalgia, and where they can chill playing superior single player/couch co-op without caring so much about playing online.
@Yosher Agreed I like it when people vote with their wallets. The worst thing to do is reward them for a poor product which unfortunately happens all too often.
hard to take this review seriously when they also gave Mario Strikers a 9/10 . anyone know if nintendo life has ever give any first party nintendo game a bad review?
really good list. I think there is a huge gap between the top 6/7 and the rest. i really cant justify playing this mario kart over the new one, but understand it's a classic.
interesting that Smash Bros Ultimate has sold more total copies in Japan than Mario Kart. And Minecraft/Ringfit over Breath of the Wild lol. I would be interested in seeing the full list, or at least the top ten.
I would have absolutely loved to play a noncloud version of these games on the switch. buying a playstation just to play them alone doesn't really warrant it for me either(no other nonswitch games I really care to play). Oh well, hopefully on the next Switch.
if they want to put out a $30 dollar double pack with KOTR down the road thats something I'd be interested in, but $40+ in advance for a standalone old game that you wont even see for nearly a year? I'm clearly not the target audience.
