The latest Japanese charts are in thanks to Gematsu and there's been a few changes to the line-up this week. First up of course, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes has comfortably taken the top spot with a healthy 97,538 units sold, with Nintendo Switch Sports scoring silver at 19,255 units.
Mario Strikers: Battle League sees another drop in sales and falls down to sixth place in the charts, so it's probably safe to assume that the fervour around the title has well and truly died down at this point. It's nice to see Animal Crossing: New Horizons back in the top ten at number nine, and it definitely makes us wonder if any other title here will reach its monumental lifetime sales.
Here's a look at this week's charts in full:
- [NSW] Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (Nintendo, 06/24/22) – 97,538 (New)
- [NSW] Nintendo Switch Sports (Nintendo, 04/29/22) – 19,255 (512,3010)
- [NSW] Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles (Aniplex, 06/09/22) – 10,663 (122,512)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 9,261 (4,691,651)
- [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Nintendo, 03/25/22) – 8,239 (777,810)
- [NSW] Mario Strikers: Battle League (Nintendo, 06/10/22) – 7,688 (52,863)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 7,437 (3,188,728)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 7,095 (2,684,472)
- [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Nintendo, 03/20/20) – 4,621 (7,272,811)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 4,449 (4,909,639)
Looking at hardware sales this week, the PlayStation 5 has seen a slight boost, likely thanks to extra stock becoming available, putting the consoles sales just ahead of the Xbox. The Switch, of course, remains the top dog for the week, with the OLED, Standard Model, and Lite making up the top three spots.
- Switch OLED Model – 28,267 (1,927,423)
- Switch – 19,089 (18,418,847)
- Switch Lite – 9,193 (4,771,088)
- PlayStation 5 – 7,257 (1,459,052)
- Xbox Series X – 4,881 (113,864)
- Xbox Series S – 4,034 (134,110)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 1,924 (244,132)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 141 (1,187,199)
- PlayStation 4 – 17 (7,819,718)

Some good sales from PS5 machines. 🙂
Honestly, as a fan of Mario sports games, I hope Mario Strikers will sell poorly and that Nintendo will finally see that this fix it later approach is stupid. And not that they see it as an excuse to never make a Mario Strikers game again.
Good to see some great games in the top 10 though!
@Yosher Agreed I like it when people vote with their wallets. The worst thing to do is reward them for a poor product which unfortunately happens all too often.
@Yosher why do you post this on every single sales chart? At this point you’re trying to will the game into being a failure.
Edit: article has been corrected, move along
Original:
"total sales for the Xbox Series X and S outpaces the PS5 once again if you factor in the significantly lower Digital Edition sales"
I don't think this statement is accurate if you go by the sales numbers posted.
7,257 + 1,924 (PS5) > 4,881 + 4,034 (XBox)
?
@mjharper I think the writer meant “if you do not factor the digital edition sales”.
Still an achievement for Xbox in Japan.
The Xbox is selling as fast as the PS5 this week? Damm, Sony sales in Japan are really bad
@Jireland92 It should. I want Nintendo to get the message already. It sucks to see a series you love get treated in such a way and they've been ruining series left and right at Nintendo's, mostly Mario related ones. It needs to stop, they need to bring quality control back to where it used to be.
I promise to stop posting about it in sales topics though. Sorry.
Can anyone here please tell me, if it's possible to turn off items in Mario Strikers. I can't really find an answer to that question.
@Yosher could be the last Strikers game we’ll see. Not sure Charged sold as well as they liked either back in the day.
Ugh I can only buy one game next month but so many choices!
By August Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be taking over the chart, Fire Emblem: Three Hopes only had July to enjoy its stay and that is if Live-a-Live didn't already come knocking.
I keep thinking I want to buy an OLED Switch (I have the ACNH Switch) but I don't know if I should given that we're closer to a next-gen system from Nintendo now than not.
Three Hopes did really well for just getting shy of 100k on launch. That is double of what FE Warriors did.
@Jireland92 which is kind of funny because there is no actual indication that this game failed for Mario Striker standards lol. Some people are just mad there wasn’t a tacked on filler story mode in a Mario Sports game to justify “adequate content”.
@Anti-Matter Man that PS5 Digital Edition is a total flop from Sony. It's way worse than the PS Vita situation. And this is people probably buying it because they couldn't find the regular PS5. If the regular PS5 was in good stock, the digital edition would tank even more.
Ring Fit staying strong, love to see it.
@progx That'd be pretty sad considering they decided to take the barebones approach with this one. It's like doing much less and expecting for much more. It won't happen, unfortunately
...I see challenges here - last year was rough for new Switch games, this year is MUCH worse. Less than 100K for Fire Emblem warriors is not a good start.
The overall sales for Switch games are all pretty poor - it's clear that there is a momentum issue on Switch and it's unclear how it will change (Splatoon 3? Pokemon? ???)
Apologies folks, got the maths wrong on the console sales.
@cyrus_zuo lol what kind of metric are you using? You DO realIze three hopes got over double what FE Warriors got right? Wouldn’t be surprised if there was decent legs too.
Also you are saying 50k~ Switch sales are bad this week? Why don’t you look at those Sony HW sales and relearn what bad means
Blatant concern trolling is blatant.
I'm just disappointed AI: Nirvana Initiative isn't in the top 10. Really enjoying it so far.
@Yosher Knowing Nintendo, poor sales equates to people not interested in the franchise and they’ll just let it die off. They love ignoring the criticism.
The recent Musou crossover games are so underrated, so it's nice to see that Three Hopes is up at top.
Mario Foosball off the charts already?
No surprise tbh
Surprising Ring-Fit still there after 2019 release right before Covid.
@AzzyC but it is on the charts
@Jireland92 damn I missed it lol.
