The controversial Cloud versions of the Kingdom Hearts games on Switch have received a new update today, Square Enix Japan has announced. This means that all three collections — Kingdom Hearts - HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind — are now on version 1.0.3.
The updates bring mostly minor changes to these ports, which require you to be connected to the internet in order to stream them. Kingdom Heart III, however, has received an additional option to allow you to choose between "Performance" and "Graphics" modes, which is common practice in many video games nowadays.
Here are the patch notes for each game in the Kingdom Hearts Masterpiece Integrum collection, machine translated from Square Enix Japan's support pages:
Kingdom Hearts - HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix - Patch 1.0.3 (Released 12th May, 2022)
- The server congestion status is now displayed on the portal screen.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue - Patch 1.0.3 (Released 12th May, 2022)
- The server congestion status is now displayed on the portal screen.
Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind - Patch 1.0.3 (Released 12th May, 2022)
- The server congestion status is now displayed on the portal screen.
- When starting a game from the portal screen, you can now select either "Performance priority" or "Graphics priority" to play.
At least now, fans who have purchased the Cloud versions of the game will be able to see how busy the servers are, but many are still questioning why certain entries can't just be ported to the system. Back in October last year, we asked this posed this question to Ichiro Hazama — the series' producer — who said that porting the titles directly proved to be "quite difficult". That totally means we're getting Kingdom Hearts IV on Switch, right? Right?!
You can see for yourself what we thought of the entire collection in our review below, but we want to hear from you if you've played the Cloud versions of the Kingdom Hearts games, and whether you think these updates will be helpful!

I just went ahead and grabbed the All-in-One collection for PS4 for $25. Screw this cloud crap.
Insert joke about the patch turning the cloud version into a playable version
No amount of patches to what should’ve been native ports will ever convince me to buy this crap.
they buffed Cloud in the cloud versions of the game so now Sora can't beat Cloud at all
Surely, this patch will persuade everyone to buy these games!
Just let it die already😒
Just for God sakes make a native version for the Switch. Also, while you're at it, make a native version of the Final Fantasy I-VI collection, as well as Chrono Trigger. Wake up, Square!!!
The only update I wanna see is one to smash were all square stuff is removed till they stop being dicks to their fans.
Why the frick do you need a performance mode for a cloud game??? It's running off the server! The upside is supposed to be (assuming it actually worked) that the game is running off of the best hardware possible.
So cloud versions even get patched with different modes for the games over on those remote servers but the corresponding apps can't get adjustable resolution options to make streaming more plausible? Heck, I recently took an idle shot at GeforceNow, holding no breath yet facing surprisingly more playable[-ish] results on the laptop and the phone alike than I honestly expected. Meaning, flexible stream quality isn't exactly rocket science (Vita had at least two options as well, almost a decade ago) - so how come it's not an apparent priority for a portable console stream, even after the time and budget is found to continue patching the release at hand?🤔
Not to nag, but sometimes it really makes you wonder if Switch cloud version publishers live in some different dimension with widespread 7G or somesuch.
I own all the games for PS4 on disc. If I can't play on Switch without being forced to be online to play, it defeats the purpose of having these games on a hybrid device like Switch.
I'll just wait for the standard versions of all these games to be ported to run natively. I will not pay for Cloud versions. At all.
@Marioracer Lmao why would Nintendo care about that
@BLD My thoughts exactly — isn't the whole draw of Cloud Gaming that you don't need to worry about the hardware you're running it on?
Meh at this point they're just wasting their time, nobody is going to want to buy crap they couldn't even own let alone play offline. Especially not after that stupid Xbox outages this past few days which lock out millions of gamers unable to play all their new and old games they already purchased.
I mean, I don't have anything nice to say about this topic or these games, so...
Not a fan of the cloud stuff. Not something we can do yet and may need another generation or two before it can be a viable way of playing games.
If anything, I’m happy to see the option for choosing to have graphics or performance prioritized. Something I wish many games did more often. I love the option when it’s given
Not touching until everything prior to KH 3 is properly ported on Switch
Oh man, it must be so taxing on SE's servers to stream a game lol
Oh wow, I didn't even realize this versions require an internet connection in order to be played. They cannot be played offline, that just feels so dumb that it really really sucks... but I should have figured that out from the start with them being cloud versions, I did not noticed that detail sooner. Oh well, good thing I already own all of the games on PS2, PS3, & PS4.
Square keeps missing the true patch note they should include in their games for some reason.
@Abeedo They won't but i'd like em too
"The server congestion status is now displayed on the portal screen."
So now we can know when we can or can't play the game. GG Squenix. Just the update we needed.
Does this patch make the games playable? Didn’t think so…
I just got Dying Light and if THAT runs perfectly in handheld mode it's just disgusting to push cloud versions of such games. Shouldn't even dignify their practice with an article.
Serious question, what are the sales figures for this cloud crap on the Switch? I tried the demo of Control and while it ran fine, I had no inclination of picking up the game.
The whole point of the Switch is gaming ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE. Not gaming where you can get a strong WiFi connection and that's it.
It seems like I'm not hearing as much about Cloud games on this console, so perhaps developers are taking note that people don't want this and are stopping with this ridiculous practice.
But I would love to hear actually sales figures before jumping to any conclusions.
I would have absolutely loved to play a noncloud version of these games on the switch. buying a playstation just to play them alone doesn't really warrant it for me either(no other nonswitch games I really care to play). Oh well, hopefully on the next Switch.
Thanks for alienated the switch users this is got to be one of most stupidest decisions ever bad enough we got guardian of the galaxy like that.
I want these portable. But cloud only for $70? Square can suck it
Go buy the full collection on PS/Xbox for $20
Why the actual heck does a streaming version have an option to chose between performance and graphics?
This is just...words fail me...
Please just port it already if not just 1 and 2 collection and forget 3 or have it at 480p HD the worst thing since ever
NGL if this collection went down to $20 I would buy. I have no other means to play it and have a stable fibre connection at home where I play exclusively. If they said it was too difficult too port then that's it. People act like every game is easy to port which is totally untrue. It all depends on how it was first made.
Don't support this BS product, guys.
@BLD It's still running on physical hardware though. The processing in done on the server side based on player input sent to the server and then that image is sent back to your switch. I'm guessing they're not paying for the best possible hardware, so it kinda makes sense. Assuming anyone actually bought it lol
@ollietaro Specially considering that KH 1.5, Re: Chain of Memories and 2.5 re-made twice already:
They were Remade for the PS3 because they wanted to fully take advantage of the CELL Architecture as well as the fact SE lost the original Source codes of 1.5 and Re: Chain
Then the team had to Remake them again when they found out that they couldn't port the PS3 Remakes because of compatibility issues related to PS4's (and also PS5) AMD x86-64 architecture.
This Remake was then ported to Xbox because they share the Architecture with PS4/5. And then, because the main developers of the Franchise are very much occupied with FFVIIR, it was given, along with KH 2.8 (which contains the Remakes of Dream Drop Distance (originally from the 3DS) and Birth by Sleep (which was developed for PS3)) and KHII (and the Remind DLC) to Epic Games for the PC ports, (which is why they're EGS Exclusive since they were the ones who did all the work for SE, specifically the Paragon team) and to Ubitus for the Switch Cloud Versions.
Square hasn’t made a good game since the ps2. This shouldn’t be a cloud game. Sad money grab.
Server congestion monitoring? Sounds fun.
Cloud gaming is a big no for me.
@philwhite I wish I could dispute that, but I can't name a single good post PS2 game square game. I'm currently replaying FFIX for the first time in 20 years on my switch and really enjoying it. Back during the PS1 era square could do no wrong.
So, I used The Forgotten City as a litmus test for cloud gaming on Switch. It ran so perfect I often forgot I was playing a game on cloud and would get logged out bc I'd wandered off and left it on. So I MISTAKENLY assumed something way less graphically demanding like Kingdom Hearts 1 would run at least competently. Not even remotely. KH1 ran the way cloud gaming would have back in the 56k modem days: slow and sloppy. I've had scratched music discs be more comprehensible than this game. Seeing "congestion" is a ***** clutch maneuver: the congestion isn't the problem, it's this crappy, low value port. I absolutely encourage anyone and everyone to just pretend these games do not exist on the Switch, bc they really don't. There's at least one good example for cloud gaming on Switch, but it's far from the KH series. They're the opposite analogue to Forgotten City: a stained example of how bad it can be when you try to port on the cheap and on the fly.
