@Apebitmusic @MikeHiscoe @Indielink Alex mentions it in this video too with the frame rate waffling, which would cause a stutter. He mentions it would have been nice if they locked it to 30 fps to deal with waffling, but said it wasn’t THAT bad.
@Daniel36 the LOTR game on snes was the first thing I thought of when I saw the trailer 😃. Agreed it wasn’t the best game, but I still have fond memories of my brother and I trying to figure out what the heck to do in that game 😆
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed @Elira those older consoles on the bottom shelf are the new mini varieties, not original. You can see the USB ports on the genesis and the SNES controller ports aren’t open (as in couldn’t have an actual controller plugged in). Also the scale is evident when you compare the other consoles to the genesis mini (which is clearly the mini due to the usb controller ports)
@EarthboundBenjy @syrupdash if you look closely you can actually see the SFC mini tucked behind the genesis mini. The fake controller ports are peeking out back there.
@lighteningbolt79 there is actually a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen in the trailer that says the course will be coming to Mario Kart Tour at a later date. So yeah, not exclusive to MK8D but still fun to get it here.
@Wolf_Link I had to double check because I was pretty sure, and indeed both Breath of Fire games from SNES are on there. III and IV were PS1 games. But yeah, strange that some series aren’t complete.
@OnlyItsMeReid @Xenobound94 It states that if you have your Nintendo Account (switch) wallet linked to your Nintendo Network Account (Wii U/3DS) that you can continue to use the shared total to purchase until March 2023. So I'd guess that you can keep adding funds via the switch wallet and buy up until March 2023, so no need to load up the money this year it seems.
Reference from article:
Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems) with their Nintendo Account wallet (used with the Nintendo Switch family of systems) can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until late March 2023. After that, the balance can only be used to purchase content for the Nintendo Switch family of systems.
Outright Games aren’t exactly the best but they do have an audience. My 5 year old and 3 year old enjoyed playing Gigantosurus with my wife and I in four player co-op. And my daughter and I take turns playing their How To Train Your Dragon game on the switch.
They aren’t going to win any awards or anything but my kids like them just as much as Mario and Animal Crossing so I’m all for it.
Also I have fond memories of crappy tie-in games from when I was a kid, so now I’m passing that legacy on 🙂
@konbinilife I don’t think that’s entirely true in practice. I believe Fair Use laws in the US allow this, but the DMCA makes things like that pretty difficult.
DMCA states that you can’t circumvent DRM to make your back up / format shift / space shift. If you need to break DRM then it most certainly is illegal in the US, with some DMCA exceptions.
Some example of DMCA exceptions involve things like critique, some derivative works (Which maybe you could argue modding as), some educational purposes, etc
Every 3 years when the DMCA can be altered the EFF frequently pushes for more exemptions. Here is a list of some of their attempts:
@Kalmaro @BacklogBlues
I’m thought the digital deluxe came with all of the DLC ships and weapons whereas the physical only comes with subset. So if you want all the ships and weapons, it may still be cheaper to get the digital deluxe on this sale; I haven’t fully done the math on physical + buying the extra ships/weapons.
A lot of people seem to be asking about how the game would work. It seems that people aren’t familiar with existing sleep gamification apps. There are a handful out there, this is the one I’m familiar with: https://sleeptown.seekrtech.com/
I’d guess that it would be something like this. Basically trying to encourage people to get into a good regular sleep schedule.
I believe some of the discrepancies between metacritic and rotten tomatoes stems from how they aggregate.
I believe metacritic is a normalized average. So takes all the scores reviews and normalized then to a 100 point scale and you get the average.
Whereas rotten tomatoes is a ratio of positive to negative reviews. So In that case a 6/10 and a 10/10 equally contribute to the overall percentage score.
That’s most likely why you see metacritic scores lower than rotten tomatoes.
The technique they're using is 2D skeletal animation, it uses a skeleton mapped to "pieces" or bones of the characters. It allows for things like setting keyframes of the animation and allowing the system to do interpolation to animate from one key frame to the next. It can be done quite well as with recent games like Unruly Heroes that uses Spine 2D skeletal Animation and based on the look I'd be willing to bet that all of the Steam World games uses skeletal animation. Again, you need to put the time and effort into not making it look rigid though.
@SuperWeird as other have mentioned, the humble part has to do with the fact that a percentage goes to a charitable cause. I agree the store page for the Nintendo games does not explain it well. I received the promo email from them about it and in there it says "Up to 10% of proceeds support your charity of choice." That is at least how the regular store works. There other bundles (Humble Bundles) that offer a "pay what you want" model, usually with tiered options that unlock more games. There wound up being two of these during the Wii U era that featured non-1st party Wii U and 3DS games (one bundle was bigger 3rd party, the other was indie focused).
@bluedogrulez And don't get me wrong, I totally agree that SMR was a steal at $10, i totally got my time out of it, and i haven't spent any money on any of the other Nintendo mobile apps, so in my mind it would be great if they did more of this going forward. I just don't think you can infer anything from the marking phrase "Free to Start" that's all.
@bluedogrulez if you look at the geek.com article in my previous post you'll see where there is a quote from Iwata that talks about how they view "free to play" and how they refer to all "free to play" as "free to start". Free to start has no implication that it will be a one purchase unlockable situation like SMR.
"“I do not like to use the term ‘Free-to-play,'” says Iwata. “I have come to realize that there is a degree of insincerity to consumers with this terminology, since so-called ‘Free-to-play’ should be referred to more accurately as ‘Free-to-start.'”"
source: http://time.com/3747342/nintendo-ceo-satoru-iwata/
Now obviously there is different leadership (rest in peace Iwata-san), but I believe they are using the same marketing in this area. So when you hear "free to start" that is just Nintendo's version of "Free to Play" in general.
@chardir @bluedogrulez it's worth noting that "free to start" implies nothing. When Nintendo got into the free to start/play model they decided they didn't like the term "free to play" since they felt it wasn't honest, so they decided to use "free to start". In Nintendo's eyes "Free to start" is identical to "Free to play" and thus have no implications on a Super Mario Run vs Fire Emblem: Heroes system.
@IndieGameGirly Some people really don’t like that style of graphics, but it doesn’t really bother me much. As to if it would be fun it would depend on the gameplay for me. The game is out on steam and has some positive reviews, just not a lot of reviews.
@YANDMAN the technique is called skeletal animation. It allows for the use of less drawing required for animating which is why a lot of indies use it. You can draw one rig of your character and animate a skeleton of it and get many different animation cycles out of a single set of of assets. There are many different pieces of software to do this, and even Unity’s own 2D tutorials show how to do this style of animation. It can be done well, but most don’t make the effort and instead just add the “bounce” to make it feel more “animated”...

Re: Octopath 0 Is A Game-Key Card On Switch 2, And Square Enix Has "No Plans" For A Switch 1 Upgrade Option
@tonyp1987
There was speculation that it's not an issue of not being able to fit the game on a game card. It's that the minimum size of the game cards is too big and thus too expensive. See: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/05/rumour-new-leak-may-explain-why-so-many-switch-2-physicals-are-game-key-cards
With the Switch 1 the game cards came in multiple smaller sizes and was cheaper to go with smaller cards, of which I'd bet Octopath 0 could fit on.
