Re: Nintendo Formally Acknowledges Same-Sex Marriage, Despite Japanese Law

Phostachio

@Dezzy70

The time has NOT come, because gay marriage is still illegal and gay citizens still get discriminated against in Japan and many other countries, hence Nintendo's statement here. Religious beliefs/conservatism have everything to do with these laws. In a perfect world, there would be no discrimination against the LGBTQ community, but this is not a perfect world and folks have to take a stand and fight for their rights. As @Tandoori said, you should talk less and listen more, because at this point you're still coming off as if you disagree with Nintendo's support of their LGBTQ employees while saying sweet nothings like "the world should be nicer". Also, I strongly disagree with your idea that the LGBTQ community shouldn't fight back because it'll fuel hate groups. You're basically saying that hate should win.

Re: Soapbox: Free Game Updates Are Fantastic For Everyone, Except New Players

Phostachio

I think I can understand this for certain types of games, but Dead Cells is a rogue like and you’re supposed to go through many playthroughs, each being different from the last. An MMO that’s more experience based than skill based, though? Totally overwhelming after a certain point. I remember my friends wanting to get into FFXIV with me when Shadowbringers launched, and them being quickly deterred when they realized how much content they had to go through to catch up with me. Sure they could have bought the story skips, but imho that kind of thing should be free and they didn't bother. I love FFXIV, but it's that kind of time gating that made me quit. My guild mates dropped off one by one and it became harder to get people to get invested in the game with me, and I'm personally not in love with the game's community so I stopped trying to make new friends in game after a while.

If you're going to continually update your game, devs, please keep new players in mind.

@HeadPirate

And believe me, as a fan of indies I love that Microsoft is pushing Gamepass these days. It’s definitely the best third party system out there. Whether or not Microsoft’s focus is AAA or smaller indie games, though, is irrelevant. As you’ve said before, all of their games can be played on a PC, including the games that used to sell their consoles (Halo, Forza, Gears). Forza Horizon is the only one I’m still interested at this point, both Halo and Gears turned into live service microtransaction fueled machines that I’m just not a fan of and it really seems like Microsoft is more interested in just buying studios than they are developing games in-house. I enjoy the Series X but between the big three it’s the least essential imo, especially since we’ve seen such a huge resurgence in people gaming on PC.

Re: Talking Point: In An Age Of Endless Delays, Nintendo's First-Party Flow Is Extraordinary

@HeadPirate

The fact remains, though, that PlayStation and Microsoft are putting increasingly more stock in bigger, more demanding AAA games and are spending less and less time on franchises that don’t quite sell as much. Look back at the days of the PlayStation 3 and how huge their first party catalog was compared to today. Not only that, them dipping out of the handheld market has pretty much taken an axe to smaller franchises that I loved like Patapon. Even with the delays, PlayStation’s output just hasn’t been as steady as it used to be and it’s been getting worse pre-pandemic.

@UltimateOtaku91

Owning all three is definitely the way to go if you have the money but the average gamer doesn’t, and personally if I was going to only have one of the three I’d roll with Nintendo every time. I guess that’s my complaint with Sony and Microsoft right now, they don’t stand out enough imo compared to Nintendo. Most of the games I play on my PS5 can be played on my Series X, I’m lucky to get two PlayStation first party games a year that I actually want to play (this year being Returnal and Kena).

@UltimateOtaku91

You’re right, my bad. Too often I hear simplicity thrown at Nintendo as an insult, and I just don’t understand it. I got the platinum trophy for Elden Ring a couple days back and while I loved that game, it’s too dang big and it’ll be a while before I play a game on that scale again. Definitely think the open world actually hurt Elden Ring in places compared to Bloodborne.

@ItsOKToBeOK

Beautifully put, exactly this. Honestly I hate that AAA require so much work, so many developers and so much money and investment. It’s become too much and I think it’s actually detrimental to true innovation because publishers are too afraid to fail on such a huge scale. Indie games and Nintendo are keeping things real, providing fun and often unique experiences without being so resource intensive.

Re: Talking Point: In An Age Of Endless Delays, Nintendo's First-Party Flow Is Extraordinary

Phostachio

@UltimateOtaku91

It really isn’t, though. No one told Sony or Xbox to just focus on big open world games, cinematic games, or microtransaction filled multiplayer games. I absolutely will compare Nintendo to them because Nintendo is focused on putting out fun experiences whereas Microsoft is content with stripping out tons of content in a decades old multiplayer franchise and giving it back to us piece by piece every few months, and Sony is content with making movie games with samey gameplay.

Re: Talking Point: In An Age Of Endless Delays, Nintendo's First-Party Flow Is Extraordinary

Phostachio

@Yodalovesu And in my opinion, a billion levels less fun. I don’t know why people make such a big deal about complexity and graphics when games like Forbidden West are already so played out. How many open world Assassin’s Creed style games is Sony going to put out before they realize a lot of their fans want to see something innovative and different? Sony used to have so many different genres and creative franchises under their belt, and now they’re laser focused on cinematic movie-like games or pretty but kinda boring open world games. For Christ’s sake, they’re remaking Last of Us which isn’t even an old game!

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

@WaveBoy

Yeah, I mean okay if it’s a historical film I’d rather they stuck to the source material as close as possible unless they’re intentionally doing their own spin on it (Hamilton), but I never understood the anger with a POC being cast to play a fictional character. Unless the ethnicity/culture is a huge part of their character (for instance a white American playing Black Panther wouldn’t make sense), it really shouldn’t matter. I’m more concerned that this show just won’t be very good based on Resident Evil’s track record with anything outside of videogames.

@HotGoomba

We’ve already resolved our differences, you’re a bit late.

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

Phostachio

@WaveBoy I’m mostly into retro games myself these days! Look, I apologize for some of the name calling. I definitely get more heated online than I would in a face to face discussion. I just don’t get the woke culture outrage. Yeah, I think some people can be TOO sensitive but that goes for both sides and it’s hard to to look at someone complaining about LGBTQ stuff or women in media or colored folks playing a lead and not think they’re a bigot. If you’re not, that’s great, but try not to give off that impression in the future.

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

Phostachio

@WaveBoy I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love games. I just don’t love the guys spending 8 hours a day gaming, watching streams, regurgitating conspiracy theories and other dumb nonsense, posting on 4chan etc. I probably play videogames at for at least eight hours a week. I’m talking about the incels who seem to hate the world outside of their bedroom.

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

Phostachio

@Arkay I’ve lived most of my life in Florida, was raised by parents who came from predominantly conservative/redneck families, and was able to not become a product of my environment and kept to my own morality and opinions. I’ve always been open minded, which is why I’ll call out people refusing to watch a movie, show, or play a game merely because they might contain LGBTQ themes or have a female lead kicking ass, or a colored person. If that makes me judgmental for fighting back against people being judgmental, so be it.

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

Phostachio

@WaveBoy I do agree that woke culture has been killing comedy, but I don’t agree with the whole “force all of that stuff” mentality a lot of folks have. We’re finally in a time where people are becoming more accepting of the LGBTQ community and directors/actors/writers are more comfortable to create content that’s inclusive. I don’t really see what’s wrong with that. I’m not gay, but I don’t get mad at seeing a gay character in a film. There’s nothing that screams stunted growth and immaturity more to me than someone being upset that people are different than them.

Re: Gallery: We Breakdown The Two Trailers For Netflix's Resident Evil

Phostachio

@WaveBoy

My issue with you guys complaining about “woke politics” in movies/shows is that you dismiss things outright before you even know if the thing will be good or not. In my opinion you’re all annoying, people being overly “woke” and the people complaining about it. You’re going to have to get over LGBTQ stuff being a thing, whether you like it or not. It’s not going anywhere and the longer conservatives push against it, the more it’ll be pushed into media (not that I personally have a problem with it in the first place). Your concern should be the quality of the project, and if all it takes for you to dismiss it is seeing a gay couple or colored person play the lead, your concern isn’t about how good it is and it just shows your ugly prejudice to the world. I don’t know why I’m preaching to the gaming community, which in my experience seems to be incredibly intolerant anyway.

@Jeronan

Yeah, I mean it isn’t my favorite of the trilogies but I’d certainly rather watch anything from the sequel trilogy over Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones. I dig the world building and the fact that the prequel trilogy gave us the Clone Wars show, but my god all of the dated CGI and bad acting makes the prequel trilogy hard to watch. Still do watch them because I’m just that much of a Star Wars fan, but the sequel trilogy is more enjoyable for me. Great action, a good mixture of practical and computer effects, better acting, and decent humor. The overall story isn’t great but it’s a fun ride and I personally loved The Last Jedi.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus' NYC Launch Was Unusually Subdued, But That's Fine

Phostachio

@TimmyP4545

It has a few good ideas but yeah, I’m probably not getting this one. I bought BDSP because they’re simple remakes of games I loved in the past, but this is supposed to be Game Freak’s next big step for the franchise and I just cannot get over how rough the environment looks. I’m not a graphics guy, but it doesn’t look half as good as BotW and that’s just crazy to me considering how profitable Pokémon is.

Re: Christina Aguilera And Her Daughter Got To Play The New Pokémon Legends: Arceus

@SpaceboyScreams Lmao, the term “white knighting” will never not be funny to me. I don’t what’s funnier, complaining about the way a woman looks on the Internet who doesn’t know you or gives one iota about your opinion or defending people who do. She’s certainly not thinking “I wonder what the folks on Nintendo Life are thinking about the amount of makeup I used for this Nintendo ad”, so the critique “less makeup please” falls on deaf ears and serves no purpose but to, yes, make the guy look a little sexist.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Version 2.0 Will Be The Game's Final Major Free Update

Phostachio

@Stocksy

I’m really not sure what your issue is here. The paid DLC can be either a one-time purchase, or you can get it with the NSO expansion at no extra cost. How is this enticing people to pay for the NSO expansion? People who only want the paid DLC can purchase it (which is cheaper than a year of the NSO expansion membership), or they get it as an added bonus if they were going to get the membership anyway. This is a win-win for consumers, unless you wanted the Happy Home stuff to be part of the free update. In that case, you’re being extremely greedy. This paid DLC is a huge chunk of content for a reasonable price, and they’ve added a ton of stuff in the free update. Expecting Nintendo to keep rolling out free content for the next couple of years is insane.
