IGN just published a juicy half-hour long video of gameplay for Eastward, the post-apocalyptic pixel art action-adventure RPG. It's giving us a little bit retro Zelda, a smidgen of Secret of Mana, and a dash of The Last of Us; it also has cooking minigames, environmental puzzles, and frying pan combat.
But most of all, it's VERY pretty, which is no doubt what caught the eye of publisher Chucklefish (Stardew Valley, Witchbrook) — the game is being developed by a Shanghai studio named Pixpil, but is coming to Switch and PC with pixel art specialists Chucklefish's help.
We don't have a release date for Eastward yet, although Chucklefish said that it was coming "not yet, but soon" back in June (and they update their devblog pretty frequently, if you want to see how it's going).

In the last while indie developers have been putting out very slick looking games. But I feel many of them suffer greatly in the gameplay department. It tells me the artists aren’t game designers, and being an illustrator myself I’m not surprised by this
So beautiful! I don't have to see anymore, this is an INSTANT BUY! 🥰
Can this game and Sports Story just come out already? I feel like I’ve been waiting for both games for years now.
Why does every game on this site gets compared to Zelda and Metroid?
The title of this article should have simply been "Check out this awesome pixel art game."
@AvianBlue right you are. It's really diminishing the effort of developers. Let potential players make up their own mind.
Been waiting for this game for a while and honestly releasing this much gameplay footage is almost cruel. How can I watch 25 minutes of this and not literally die from not being able to play it?
Looks incredible graphically and gameplay wise 👌
"post-apocalyptic"... I need more
"pixel art"... almost there
"Zelda-like" NOW I get it!
Honestly I know it plays a bit more like Zelda but this game gives me Mother vibes like nothing else
@noodlesoup 100% agree!!! I didn't even think of any of those games mentioned in the article, just mother and Undertale
Actually, this looks really great. The art is beautiful, and the sound design is fantastic. Looks MUCH closer to Secret of Mana than Zelda, not getting any Zelda vibes off it but I get it, Nintendo bla bla bla. Looks pretty cool!
NINJA APPROVES PRETTY COOL GAMES
@NinChocolate
Couldn't disagree with you more, it really seems like Nintendo and indie devs are the only ones putting out fantastic, innovative games. Hell, lately I can't even say that about Nintendo. Not that they won't again, it's just been a slow year for them.
So glad this is not random encounter and turn based. This game is what Star Tropics would had look like if it got a modern 2D revival.
This game looks amazing. I'd also like to bring attention to a charming, underrated zelda/roguelike called Swords of Ditto:Mormos Curse on the Eshop. It may be available on Steam etc. too.
Man, I've been waiting for this game for what seems like years now. I'm happy to see that it's still coming, but I'm really sick and tired of developers announcing games so damn early. Why is it so difficult to only announce games that will release in 6 months?
@AvianBlue because of the sound the bomb made, lol. That's the only thing that seemed anything like Zelda to me.
@Specter_of-the_OLED wow, i was thinking i would like it if it were turn based. All the indie turn based games that get released suck, except bug fables, that i can, think of.
@AvianBlue I'd recommend "You will never guess what genre this pixel art game is" as a title.
Eastward have been officialy rated by the ESRB. The game is coming really soon. I guess we will have a release date at the August Indies Direct (each year we have a August Indies Direct since 2017). 😁
