Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 2nd)

Oswinner

I would love, as others have, to sink my teeth into the delicious last course. However, I bought Cuphead a few months ago and haven’t got up to speed with it yet as playing a few others games first.

This weekend?

Celeste is my go to at the minute, after finishing Kaze and the Wild Masks last week (highly recommended for DKC fans). What a game Celeste is. Think I’m on the 5th chapter and really enjoying myself.

When I need a break and some downtime I’ve been playing a bit of Jurassic World: Evolution. Not long into the 2nd island, just hatched a couple of Velociraptors. Ooo errr…

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (April 16th)

Oswinner

So many games to play. So little time.

However, when I do get time it’s…

DONKEY KONG: TROPICAL FREEZE
Going thru Hard Mode with DK whilst getting the blue KONG letters. Up to world 5-4 and the G is giving me a bit of gip!

YOSHI’S CRAFTED WORLD
Going thru trying to get all flowers. Up to 490 now. The game I play when DK dies for the 100th time. Lol.

Re: Backlog Club: Week Zero - Hello, And Welcome To Backlog Club

Oswinner

Lovely idea. Slay the Spire is not in my backlog or on my radar so will give this week a miss. May have to give Earthbound on NSO a go the week after if it wins the poll as I’ve got a lovely week off work. Should be spent building wardrobes etc for my new house but I think playing as Ness coming off my bucket list is more important 😂

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 3D Platformers

Oswinner

Not long completed Blue Fire. Decent 3D platformer.

Yooka-Laylee I loved. Very underrated on the internet. Not quite as good as Banjo games though.

Never played Crash Bandicoot back in the day but picked up the n-sane trilogy. Only played the first and 100% it. Awesome game. I see it more as 2.5d than 3D though.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Biggest Gaming Regrets

Oswinner

Losing Goldeneye and Mario Kart out of my n64 collection and losing Smash Bros out of my GameCube collection.

As for never purchasing?

On the n64?
Diddy Kong Racing
Star Fox 64

On the GameCube? Loads…
Star Fox Adventures
Pikmin 2
Viewtiful Joe 2
Luigi’s Mansion
Resident Evil games

On the Wii?
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 (although since got 1 on the 3D collection on switch)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 22nd)

Oswinner

Not played much this past week but plan to get back to Hades. I’ve had 10 or so runs so far and managed to get to the second boss twice. Hope to make it third time lucky and mess it up.

Other than that, been stuck near the end of Guacamelee for a while so will look at ending that one. Blue Fire is the same boat. Must be near the end but kinda stuck.

And finally, Yoshi’s Crafted World I’m currently attempting to get all flowers which is proving quite difficult.

Oh and elsewhere, I like to have a Snes game on the go. Stuck in Super Metroid. D’oh. Will finish it one day.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 11th)

Oswinner

Same as have been for the past three months.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Super Mario Odyssey

Got to soft credits after about a week of playing but the post-game has kept me busy since. Hard mode DKC:TF - up to world 4 boss atm.
Mario I’m up 630 moons or so. Just tried the Darkest Side of the Moon last night. Died a gruesome death. Who said this game was too easy? Only those that play up to soft credits that’s who.

Re: Talking Point: How Many Hours Is A 'Short' Game For You?

Oswinner

It really depends on the game.

Is Tropical Freeze a short game? I got to the end pretty quick, maybe 8 hours or so. However, I have now pumped in nearly 40 hours into it and have 116% completed it.

Give me a short-ish game with loads of replay value over a long game with no replay value anyday.

So 10 hours or under that I want to replay again, maybe in a harder mode > 30 Hour+ game where I may not be bothered to play again.

I imagine when I eventually get around to playing Metroid Dread I will really enjoy the playtime. 8-10 hours first playthrough and then another playthrough in hard mode. That's about 20 hours right there. And then in a year or two I may blast it again for another 8-10 hours. Before you know it, I've cranked up 30 hours on it lol.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

Oswinner

It’s funny you should say that because I’ve been playing Skyward Sword as my weekend daytime game, albeit on the Wii, whilst my nighttime game with headphones in has been Tropical Freeze. 2D platformers work best in handheld mode I believe.

I imagine this would be the same if I had Skyward Sword on the Switch.

Re: Best Nintendo 64 Games

Oswinner

Here’s my collection and order of preference, with the Nintendo Life ranking in brackets;

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1)
2. Perfect Dark (7)
3. Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2)
4. Goldeneye (3)
5. Banjo-Kazooie (4)
6. Banjo-Tooie (16)
7. Conker’s Bad Fur Day (12)
8. Donkey Kong 64 (37)
9. Super Mario 64 (5)
10. Mario Kart 64 (9)
11. Mario Tennis (23)
12. Super Smash Bros (11)

22. ISS 98 (n/a)
23. Excitebike 64 (n/a)
24. International Track & Field: Summer Games (n/a)

My thoughts? DK64 gets hated on way too much on the internet. I loved that game back in the day. Four of my top-5 is also in the NL top-5.

Only ones in the NL top-10 that I didn’t play/own were Star Fox and Paper Mario.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online N64 Game Ranked

4. Goldeneye
5. Banjo-Kazooie
6. Banjo-Tooie
7. Conker’s Bad Fur Day

The top-5 of my collection that are in the NSO are also rated in the same order here.

1) Ocarina of Time
2) Majora’s Mask
3) Banjo-Kazooie
4) Super Mario 64
7) Mario Kart 64

Not got Star Fox or Paper Mario.

Re: Best GameCube Games

Oswinner

Strange list. Sunshine in 47th? Metroid Echoes nowhere near top 5? Let alone top 10.

As of September 15, 2021 the top ten (without collection ports) is;

10: Eternal Darkness
9: Mario Kart: Double Dash
8: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
7: Skies of Arcadia Legends
6: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
5: Super Smash Bros: Melee
4: Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3: Metroid Prime
2: Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
1: Resident Evil 4

I only played (and own) five of them.

I was disappointed with the Gamecube at the time and still enjoyed playing my n64 so missed out on quite a few games but my top ten list is;

10. Eternal Darkness
9. Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II
8. Pikmin
7. Mario Kart: Double Dash
6. Super Mario Sunshine
5. F-Zero GX
4. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3. Super Smash Bros: Melee
2. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
1. Metroid Prime

Twilight Princess I had on Wii. Others I’d like to add to my collection that could challenge my top 10?

Resident Evil 4
Timesplitters 2
Pikmin 2
Mario Power Tennis (was still playing n64 version)
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour (was still playing n64 version)
Viewtiful Joe 1 & 2 (have since added 1 but not played through)
Paper Mario (is it really that good?)
Luigis Mansion
Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 11th)

Oswinner

Life has been getting in the way the last couple of weeks. Doubt I’ll get to play much this weekend but over the next week or so…

Quake
Got about two or three levels left on episode 4. Been playing on easy because I’m not the best FPS player but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

Crash Bandicoot
Think I’m up to 103%. All I’ve got to do is get a time trial relic from Stormy Ascent, which means not dying for about 5-7 mins…eeek!

Skyward Sword (Wii)
Re-Started this in July I think and really enjoyed it. Near the end of the game I reckon (in the Fire Sanctuary) but I don’t get much chance to play the Wii on the main TV.

Re: Poll: Why Do You Collect Video Games?

Oswinner

I have a collection of games but wouldn’t really call myself a collector.

Still got my n64 with about 20 games that I play on occasionally.
GameCube with about 12
Wii with about 3 good games and 12 crap games.
Wii U I never owned
Switch I have 3 physicals and 40ish digital.

I have embraced the digital age. If the n64/GameCube/Wii games I have ever get made available digitally then I will buy them again and sell the originals. The good games of those anyway.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 21st)

Skyward Sword (Wii)
Just done the Sandship. Creative dungeon. Off to get the third sacred flame now…!

Crash Bandicoot (Switch)
Up to 91% completion. Struggling to get the last three gems as cannot find all the head tokens for the bonus level but I fail to succumb to a guide. I will find them myself dammit…!

Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Unlocked the Golden Temple a few weeks ago but not had much time to play it. Need to complete it. Once done, May go back through the levels getting at least silver on the time trials and find all the puzzle pieces.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online SNES Game Ranked

Oswinner

My top games based on what ive played for prolonged periods (not many games to choose from)…

1: Super Mario All-Stars
It’s 4 games in one, remastered! 4 games!! Granted, I’ve only ‘beaten’ 1 and lost levels whilst near the end of 3. I’ll come back to 2 at one point. I prefer DKC to Mario but this game has 4 awesome games!

2: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble
Really enjoyed playing through all the DKC games earlier this year. I believe they get better and better with each iteration. Internet under-hypes 3. It’s a quality game. Would have been cool to unlock Diddy and DK for the rest of the game when you free them from K.Rool though.

3: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong-Quest
As above. Love these games.

4: Donkey Kong Country
As above. Love these games.

5: Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
6: Super Metroid
These two games I have both started twice but never finished them. Played them about 15-20 years ago on emulation but didn’t finish and briefly started them on NSO. I enjoy the games though and will finish them properly one day and they’ll probably rank higher in my list.

7: Super Mario Kart
Played it in the 90s before the n64 and loved it. Still a decent game today, albeit Mario Kart franchise is more refined now.

8: F-Zero
Not played too much of it but I love me some F-Zero. Obviously not as good as X or GX but still a fun exhilarating time.

Splitting the All-Stars games up I have it as;

1) Donkey Kong Country 3
2) Donkey Kong Country 2
3) Donkey Kong Country
4) Super Mario Bros
5) Super Mario Bros 3
6) LoZ: A Link to the Past
7) Super Metroid
8) Super Mario Kart
9) F-Zero
10) Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels

Skyward Sword (Wii)
Never did finish this game after breaking my wrist 10 years ago but restarted it this past week and I’m enjoying it. Up to the desert now.

Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Two levels left to collect all the KONG letters. Then onto the golden temple. Never did complete this back in the day either but it’s a barnstormer. Came back to it after going through the original DKC series on NSO. Love each game, think they get better with each game. Can’t wait until I get around to Tropical Freeze.

Those are the main two I’ve played over the past week. Had a bit of a Wii week.

Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Dread Be The Franchise's 'Awakening'?

Oswinner

Metroidvania has really kicked off the last few years. Metroid Dread should sell at least 3 million. It will also be the first 2D Metroid I purchase. Only ever purchased the three Prime games. Wish the other 2D games were available on the Switch. Come on Nintendo, make it happen…!

Ps…I won’t be buying until it’s £33 in the sale. Sod £50. Sorry Nintendo, sorry Metroid.

Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

Oswinner

So the definite versions of Metroid games because nobody cares about the spin-offs…

2D Metroid
1: Metroid III - Super Metroid (94)
2: Metroid I - Zero Mission (91)
3: Metroid IV - Metroid Fusion (88)
4: Metroid II - Samus Returns (84)

3D Metroid
1: Metroid Prime I (94)
2: Metroid Prime II - Echoes (87)
3: Metroid Prime III - Corruption (86)

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (July 10th)

Oswinner

I’ve been playing through the Donkey Kong Country series slowly but surely the last few months alongside other games.

However, this past week or so it’s gone into overdrive as I now play Returns on the Wii during the day and then in the evening before bed I’m playing thru 1-3 trying to get 100% as I’ve already defeated K.Rool in them.

The other night I felt like going full arcade mode and started a new file on 1 and tried to beat K.Rool without getting a game over. I got up to Rope Bridge Rumble (level 25/40) before I got game over. Shame. Great way to play the game though.

So I then tried DKC2 the next night. All with intentions to save state the game when going bed. However, I kept playing and playing before meeting my demise at Rickety Race (level 23/41).

In Returns I’m up to level 7-7 I think. Once I get to the end I will then try and get all the KONG letter to open the key levels. Once done all that I just may well have to try out ‘Arcade Mode’ on this game too, with the idea that I can’t buy balloons from Cranky.

Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

Oswinner

@I_commented awww man. You’re making me want to play the Prime Trilogy on Wii. I’ve been holding out on buying it in hope it gets re-released on Switch! I do still own the originals though so I could boot them up…!

Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time

Oswinner

@I_commented did you play it first on GameCube or the Wii trilogy? The Wii trilogy dumbed down the difficulty slightly.

The original GameCube versions, Echoes was defo harder.

As for rating the games, I’ve only really played the 3D games (wish the 2D were available on Switch)…

1: Metroid Prime *****
2: Metroid Echoes *****
3: Metroid Corruption ****

Loved the first two Prime games. Corruption was good but not quite as good as Prime
