Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Talk About Games By Comparing Them To Other Games?

Nancyboy

Comparisons usually disincline me to try a new game. I remember renting a video (no, really) based on the jacket comparing it to Hitchcock. It sucked, every bit as much as Hitch does not (with the exception of “Frenzy.” Blech.) I felt robbed - I realize I should have known better, but still it felt like a trick.

I get the article and continue to enjoy Mr. Kate’s writing, as always. After not too long a while, however, comparisons descend through meaninglessness to contemptible.

Edit: In fairness, I just started looking at the art style of Octopath Traveler. I can see where that shorthand would help. I guess that makes me a bit...ambivalent?

Speaking of which, I got a gift card. Should I buy it? I hear it’s like Yooka-Laylee.

Re: Feature: The Saddest Games On Switch - Games To Make You Cry

Nancyboy

I'm one of those who can take human sadness in media pretty well, but if it's visited on an animal, that hurts. Maybe it's a distillation - stuff happens, but when it involves what I perceive as an innocent, I have a much harder time with it. That's probably why the Ori intro cuts so hard.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 28th)

Nancyboy

West of Loathing. I went on a digital and physical buying binge as well, as if I needed more games to not play. All the Slay the Spire love here is pushing me in that direction, as that was one of the physical purchases.

I just got a $25.00 Amazon gift card. Scarlet Nexus? Kena: BoS? What to buy and let sit for years...

Re: Feature: Handheld Face-Off - Nintendo Switch OLED Model Vs Steam Deck

Nancyboy

I know they will come with time, but fewer than half of the games in my Steam library will play on the Deck, and nearly half of those require tweaks. Certainly not a huge deal as they eventually will be, but it's a niggle. I keep vacillating between the Deck, OLED, and waiting until the inevitable Nintendo New-Hardware-With-The-New-Zelda-Release gag drops.

@TheCrabMan People aren’t being racist. It’s the cute twist of humor when understood from a Western perspective. Try not to be so earnest and offended on their behalf. I’d expect they’d do the same in good-natured fun, and I’d certainly get a kick out of it were the roles reversed. It’s an honor in a way.

And I think he’s doing just fine.
